Abstract:
In this paper, Oseen?s correction to Stokes drag experienced by axially symmetric particle placed in a uniform stream perpendicular to axis of symmetry(i.e. transverse flow) is obtained. For this, the linear relationship between axial and transverse Stokes drag is utilized to extend the Brenner?s formula for axial flow to transverse flow. General expression of Oseen?s correction to Stokes drag on axially symmetric particle placed in transverse flow is found to be new. This general expression is applied to some known axially symmetric bodies and obtained values of Oseen?s drag, up to first orde

Purpose This paper aims to propose a new highly efficient iterative method based on classical Oseen iteration for the natural convection equations. Design/methodology/approach First, the authors solve the problem by the Oseen iterative scheme based on finite element method, then use the error correction strategy to control the error arising. Findings The new iterative method not only retains the advantage of the Oseen scheme but also saves computational time and iterative step for solving the considered problem. The unsteady low Reynolds number flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past a singular forcelet is investigated analytically. New fundamental three-dimensional solutions for a concentrated impulsive force are derived for the Stokes and the Oseen equations. These elementary solutions can be used as fundamental Green's functions to obtain solutions for flows over singularities with any time-dependent nature. The fundamental singularities are employed to construct some well-known solutions to demonstrate their validity and usefulness in solving unsteady problems governed by the Stokes and the O

The horseshoe vortex is given in Oseen flow as a constant spanwise distribution of lift Oseenlets. From this, the vortex line is represented in steady, incompressible Oseen flow. The velocity near to the vortex line is determined, as well as near to and far from the far field wake. The velocity field in the transverse plane near to the vortex line is shown to approximate to the two-dimensional Lamb–Oseen vortex, and the velocity field in the streamwise direction is generated by the bound vortex line of the horseshoe vortex giving a streamwise decay much faster than that of the Batchelor vortex

Be it in the weather forecast or while swimming in the Baltic Sea, in almost every aspect of every day life we are confronted with flow phenomena. A common model to describe the motion of viscous incompressible fluids are the Navier-Stokes equations. These equations are not only relevant in the field of physics, but they are also of great interest in a purely mathematical sense. One of the difficulties of the Navier-Stokes equations originates from a non-linear term. In this thesis, we consider the Oseen equations as a linearisation of the Navier-Stokes equations.
