Abstract:

Abstract:
The article describes a short but innovative chapter in the history of Catholic atlas making. The work was done by exiled German Jesuits in the Dutch houses after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1872 during the Kulturkampf. The project began in 1880–81 with four maps of China and India in the Catholic journal Die katholischen Missionen by Alexander Baumgartner, S.J. (1841–1910). His work was taken over by Oscar Werner, S.J. (1849–?). Werner’s Katholischer Missions-Atlas (1884) was the first Catholic missionary atlas. Its twenty-seven maps covered the worldwide dioceses subject to the Propaganda Fide. The supplementary Katholischer Kirchen-Atlas (1888) included fourteen maps of lands with an established Catholic hierarchy. Published in a large number of copies for a low price, both atlases helped to popularize Catholic cartography. This Jesuit groundwork abruptly ended when Werner resigned from the Society in 1891. The German tradition in Catholic atlas cartography was then taken over by members of Society of Divine Word, beginning with the Katholischer Missionsatlas (1906) by Karl Streit svd (1874–1935) and continuing for over a century with the Atlas hierarchicus (1913–2011).

Abstract:

Abstract:
What is literature? Can we measure ‘literariness’ in texts themselves? The innovative Computational Humanities project The Riddle of Literary Quality asked thousands of Dutch readers for their opinion about contemporary Dutch and translated novels. The public shared which novels they had read, what they really thought of them, and how they judged their quality. Their judgments of the same novels were compared with the results of computational analysis of the books. Using evidence from almost 14,000 readers and building on more textual data than ever before, Van Dalen-Oskam and her team uncovered unconscious biases that shed new light on prejudices many people assumed no longer existed. This monograph explains in an accessible way how the project unfolded, which methods were used, and how the results may change the future of Literary Studies.

Abstract:
Decision before Dawn (Twentieth Century-Fox, 1951) was based on the true story of a Wehrmacht prisoner-of-war, code-name ‘Happy’, who volunteered for the American Office of Strategic Services in 1945 to spy behind German lines for the Allies, exploring the issue of Landesverrat (national treason) amid the changing loyalties of the Cold War during West Germany’s post-war rearmament. Screenwriter Peter Viertel had himself been ‘Happy’s’ case-officer. The chapter uses archives from Twentieth Century-Fox studios and the US State Department to chart fruitless attempts to suppress a West German release for fear of inflaming nationalist and local Bavarian sentiment. Entscheidung vor Morgengrauen (1952) received mixed reviews, which are discussed alongside subtle changes made to the dubbed German version. The Hollywood release marked the international breakthrough for Austro-German actors Oskar Werner and Hildegard Knef.

Abstract The first Academy Awards were announced on February 18, 1929, but the dinner to hand out the statuettes was not held until three months later, on May 19, at the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. It took only five minutes to distribute the first Oscars. Though there was no suspense, the pattern of star behavior for the awards was beginning to show. None of the three nominated actors bothered to show up. Emil Jannings, who won the first two years, sent a telegram from his native Germany, which was read aloud by Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., first president of the Academy:

Abstract This brief conclusion draws together the main points that the book makes on (1) how Wilde shaped Hollywood cinema (and the limitation of our understanding of this) and (2) how seeing Wilde through Hollywood can reshape how we read him. In the first case it discusses how Wilde and the ‘Wilde-ish’ helped to define the aesthetics of American cinema up to the early 1950s. In the second, it suggests that film-makers were able to make his works and, in consequence, Wilde himself the figure that they wanted him to be and so this Conclusion discusses how their version of Wilde can shift our perspective on his works, from their criminality and violent potential to their anticipations of the cinematic gaze and epigrammatic wit.

Abstract:
Pruitt photographed Oscar West on a wooden barrel. A young man, West wears a worn jacket. He holds a broom; a tweed cap rests on his knee. He is stoop shouldered. With confidence and comfort, he looks at the camera. This Black man is photographed in a white man’s studio, the same setting, where white people—the powerful as well as struggling white yeoman farm families—are photographed. This happens during the Jim Crow era in a separate-but-unequal town where Blacks were restricted in where and how they could eat, drink from a water fountain, shop, see movies, stay in a hotel, or have access to a public restroom. In 1987, in an uncatalogued archive, a print of the image was discovered. It was made by a large format camera with an 8x10-inch glass plate negative. Thirteen years later, people who knew West, including his son Oscar Lang, who never had seen the image, spoke about West, a janitor and caretaker for children of his employer at Brown-Buick Cadillac Company. The photograph compares favorably with studio portraiture of Martin Chambi of Peru, Mike Disfarmer of Arkansas, Seydou Keita of Mali, Doris Ulmann of New York, Richard Samuel Roberts of South Carolina, and Jno. Trilica of Texas.

In Fourth International Topical Meeting on High Temperature Reactor Technology. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/htr2008-58136.

Full text
Abstract:
The resurgence of High Temperature Reactor (HTR) technology has prompted the development and application of modern calculation methodologies, many of which are already utilized in the existing power reactor industry, to HTR designs. To this end, the use of nodal diffusion methods for full core neutronic analysis is once again considered for both their performance and accuracy advantages. Recently a number of different approaches to Two-Dimensional (2D) and 3D multigroup cylindrical nodal diffusion methods were proposed by various institutions for use in HTR, and specifically Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR), reactor calculations. In this regard we may mention the NEM code from the Pennsylvania State University (PSU), based on the Nodal Expansion Method; and the OSCAR code from NECSA, utilizing a conformal mapping approach to the Analytic Nodal Method. In this work we will compare these two approaches in terms of accuracy and performance. Representative problems, selected to test the methods thoroughly, were devised and based on both a modified version of the PBMR 400 MW benchmark problem and a “cylindrisized” version of the IAEA two-group problem. The comparative results between OSCAR and NEM are given, focusing on global reactivity estimation, as well as power and flux errors as compared to reference finite-difference solutions. These results indicate that both OSCAR and NEM recover the global reference solution for the IAEA problem, and show power errors which are generally acceptable for nodal methods. For the PBMR problem the accuracy is similar, but some convergence difficulties are experienced at the outer boundaries of the system due to the very large dimensions of the reflector (when compared to typical water-moderated reactors). For both codes a significant performance increase was found as compared to finite-difference calculations, which is the method currently employed by the PBMR (Pty) Ltd company. In conclusion it seems that nodal methods have potential for use in the HTR analysis, and specifically PBMR calculational arena, although cylindrical geometry based nodal methods will have to develop toward maturity before becoming the industry standard.

Abstract:
The use of chatbots in a customer-service context is one instance of the application of digital technology to generate a competitive advantage for business. Chatbot service offers precise, instant and tailored responses for customer enquiries through a range of communication channels to many users simultaneously. However, there are concerns about customers’ perceptions of whether chatbots offer a human-like experience in customer-service interactions. The focus of this study is to investigate customers’ perceptions of the use of Air New Zealand’s chatbot customer service and its effects on customer satisfaction. This exploratory study adopted qualitative methodology using semi-structured interviews for the collection of primary data from 11 users of Air New Zealand’s chatbot service, Bravo Oscar Tango (Oscar). The results show that the chatbot service is appropriate for solving routine customer problems, providing standardised information for frequently asked questions (FAQs) and resolving non-complex customer issues. Generally, respondents were satisfied with Oscar’s service quality. However, customers perceived that the customer-service interactions lack the human-like qualities of a human customer-service agent for resolving complex customer queries. The quality of the chatbot service did not substantially impact on customers’ overall satisfaction with Air New Zealand.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Over the last thirty years the oil and gas industry has implemented high environmental standards to reduce its impact on the environment. Notably, the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico areas have put more stringent regulations in place to protect marine environments. Drilling and completion fluids services are one of the main components in drilling operations. Since the 1990's environmental performance has become a key aspect in the drilling fluids design. Specific to North Sea environmental regulations, every chemical compound in the drilling fluid formulation must be evaluated before approval for use. One of these additives is uintaite, a naturally occurring asphaltite found exclusively in the Uinta Basin, Utah, USA; recognized globally under the trademark brand name, Gilsonite®. The benefits of using uintaite in drilling fluids benefits include fluid loss and shale swelling control, lost circulation prevention, and minimizing formation damage. However, uintaite use is limited in deep-water projects due to the misconception that it is the same as other asphaltic additives – referred to as "black powders" – and is harmful if discharged into marine environments. Not only is uintaite not a "black powder", it has also been proven in previous and current studies that uintaite passes all US EPA (Environmental Protection Act) environmental tests for deep-water discharge. Most recently, uintaite has been evaluated as per Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, (OSPAR) to determine its eligibility for unrestricted use in the Norwegian section of the North Sea. While uintaite falls under the exempt category of Europe's REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) as a naturally occurring product, OSPAR has further requirements to prove a product is environmentally safe. A comprehensive set of tests dictated by OSPAR guidelines was carried out in specialized and certified laboratories to determine uintaite's ecotoxicological performance in marine environments. The test results from these requirements are detailed in this paper and demonstrate that uintaite is not toxic to marine species, is environmentally inert, and does not bioaccumulate. The findings allowed uintaite to be classified as a Green Product per the OSPAR requirements in 2021. Once the environmental performance of uintaite was clearly understood – and given its well-known use in the most challenging drilling conditions – a series of formation damage tests were carried out to have a comprehensive set of tests on all performance aspects of this unique material. The rationale behind the specific formation damage tests is to provide data points to discuss the paradigm in the industry that uintaite will create formation damage, the same as other asphaltic additives. The rock-fluid interactions results indicate that uintaite is a safe additive for sensitive ecosystems with an innocuous effect on reservoirs. The study that led to these findings includes the use of Berea sandstone with a standard synthetic base fluid to replicate downhole drilling fluids behavior.

Abstract:
Abstract Acoustical backscattering is used in determining the presence of fish in many bodies of water. Since the characteristics of this backscatter are predominantly determined by those of the swimbladder, knowing the frequency response of a fish’s swimbladder a priori could allow identification not only of size, but also of species. A noninvasive, non-contact ultrasonic measurement system was used to determine the in vivo frequency responses of the swimbladders of two different species of fish, the goldfish (Carassius auratus) and the oscar (Astronotus ocellatus). Experimental results showed a difference in both the resonance frequency and sharpness of resonance of the swimbladder between the two species even though all the animals tested were approximately the same size.

This study was designed to characterize toxicity and calculate risk of PW discharges from platforms in different world areas using various marine species and different calculation methods. Five acute or pseudo chronic toxicity tests (bacteria, microalgae, crustacean, oyster, and sea urchin larvae) were performed on PW samples from twenty-two platforms. Results from the tests were derived into four thresholds for risk calculation using European Union guidelines: one conservative approach with three species and a high AF of 1000, five species and Species Sensitivity Distributions extrapolation (SSDs) with lower AF (10) and five species and acute to chronic ration (ACR) with low AF (10). Risk results calculated using DREAM three-dimensional dispersion model for the four methods were discussed against acceptable risk threshold in use in OSPAR area. The main drivers for risk calculation were first the PW discharge flow rate, then PW toxicity, and sea currents. The results showed that the method with three species (AF of 1000) was the most conservative approach with higher risk figures in 70% of PW samples and the one with 5 species and ACR (AF of 10) in 30% of the samples. Methods using more tests species and statistical extrapolation SSD method (AF of 10) allowed to obtain much lower risk figures. Depending on the risk calculation method used, the number of sites above acceptable risk threshold used in OSPAR area ranged from 17/22 (three species and AF of 10) to 3/22 (five species, SSD and AF of 10). For this study, the European Union guidelines defined for chemical environmental risk assessment, which are among the most conservative ones in the world, were used. Although the SSD method is already quite conservative, a higher AF was used for this study. This study showed that selection of risk calculation method is key for offshore PW discharge risk assessment. It also highlights that the use of limited number of species for risk assessment in offshore environment may also lead to significant risk overestimation.

Abstract:
Vehicle seat comfort engineering is one of the most important things among vari-ous seat engineering fields. Many seat engineers want to make it easier to predict and improve comfort. There were several attempts, but it was not easy to predict due to the highly subjective nature of comfort. In this study, we tried to confirm the feasibility of developing a tool that can easily predict comfort by utilizing the main design factors of seats and vehicle packages. As Consumer’s various expe-riences while using cars were defined as comfort factors and models to predict them were developed. A total of 5 cars of mid-sized sedans with various charac-teristics were selected as the subject of this study. As objective measures, dimen-sions of the seats with SAE J826 OSCAR, calculated data from force-deflection curves of the seat, and occupants package layout dimensions were selected. SLD measurement, SgRP calculation, and 3D scans were conducted for all study ve-hicle models. In order to obtain consumer evaluation results, a comfort clinic was conducted for 33 Americans (28 males and 5 females). A model for predicting overall comfort was developed by analyzing both quantitatively and qualitatively measured and evaluated data. The adjusted R2 value of the developed prediction model was 0.8047, showing very high explanatory power.

Abstract:
Abstract As the hydrocarbon fields mature and reach the end of their productive lives, their Permanent Plug and Abandonment (PP&A) become inevitable. Even though new technology and verification methods are being researched, it is evident that operational, barrier material and qualification challenges together contribute to a risk of leaks from abandoned wells. Well integrity standard NORSOK D-010 constitutes zero leak acceptance criteria to protect the environment; however, natural hydrocarbon seepages are occurring all over the world on a daily basis. In this study, we introduce the comparison between leaking wells and natural seeps and suggest conducting a fate analysis is appropriate to provide necessary data for evaluating environmental implications of leaking wells. Two case studies were analyzed using SINTEF Ocean’s OSCAR (Oil Spill Contingency And Response) software; one historical gas leak (Field A) and a theoretical oil leak (Field B). It is found that for releases of natural gas at 70 m water depth, 95 to 99 % dissolve in the ocean, and the fraction of gas reaching the atmosphere is dependent on the initial gas bubble size. Fate of oil is more complex than gas, but evaporation, sedimentation and biodegradation are the main contributing mechanisms in the fate analysis.

Abstract:
Abstract Synthetic fluid biodegradation test is one of the essential requirements by environmental regulatory agencies before an approval for offshore cuttings disposal can be granted. In this study, the aerobic biodegradation tendencies of two industry grade, deep-water synthetic hydrocarbon-based fluids (SHBF and SEBF) were investigated using modified carbon-IV-oxide (CO2) evolution respirometry technique. The results were compared with an ester synthetic fluid that was code-named as ternary mixture of synthetic ethyl esters of plants oil (SEEP-Mixture). A known concentration of the test drilling fluids and reference chemicals was inoculated in a mineral medium, pre-conditioned and incubated by the passage of CO2 free air under aerobic condition in the dark for a period of twenty-eight (28) days at the test temperature of 58°C± 2°C in an aerobic digester. The amount of CO2 evolved from the exhaust air of each composting vessel at intermediate time intervals was measured as dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) by absorption in Ba (OH)2 solution using titration technique. Sodium benzoate (C6H5COONa) was used as reference fluid sample. The tests were conducted under OECD and OSPAR Commission recommended standard protocols for testing chemicals in the offshore oil industry. The SEEP mixture ester fluid and the sodium benzoate reference fluid sample are inherently and readily biodegradable because more than 60% of their theoretically available carbon IV Oxide (ThCO2) have been converted to CO2 in the presence of activated sludge inoculum during a 10-day window period with ultimate biodegradability extents of 87.60% and 89.10% respectively at the end of the 28-day test duration. Whereas, the synthetic hydrocarbon fluids have longer lag phase before biodegradation began and they were only fairly biodegradable under the aerobic microbial consortium with ultimate biodegradation values of 51.85% and 62.30% at the end of the 28-days test period for SHBF and SEBF respectively.
