Abstract:
AbstractTwinned as Urdu has become with the fate of India's largest religious minority, Muslims, and with the emergence of the independent state of Pakistan, for which Urdu is the official national language, the story of Urdu holds a peculiar place and a special significance in histories of the subcontinent. Stories of the Urdu language are dramatic, bound up as they are in questions of politics, the fate of Hindus and Muslims and the vicissitudes of both the Urdu and the Hindi languages. Though Hindi–Urdu language politics are an important part of these languages' colonial history, this article emphasizes another story. For, like the other vernaculars of south Asia, Urdu had to contend as much with English as with Hindi, and it is that story that is emphasized here. This article details how early-twentieth-century Hyderabad's Urdu educators engaged with questions of native education, language, and Western science. It highlights the discussions and disagreements that accompanied this educational project as Urdu advocates re-evaluated their language and its sources of authority, attempting to make the Urdu language a worldly vernacular, useful for more than the subcontinent's Muslim population.

Abstract:
In her study of Urdu language politics in late colonial India, Kavita SaraswathiDatla traces the rise and eventual demise of an alternative Urdu movement thatenvisioned the language not as a marker of Muslim religious identity, but as ameans to articulate a modern secular nationalism with roots in India’s Islamicpast. By highlighting this largely forgotten moment of secular Urdu nationalism, the author pushes back against two well-established historiographical narrativeson Muslims in colonial India: the dominant understanding of theHindi-Urdu controversy as a process of sharpening communal boundaries andthe scholarly emphasis on the epistemological struggles to make Islam andWestern science compatible. She complicates both of these existing historiesby shifting her geographic lens from northern India to the so-called colonialperiphery: the Muslim princely state of Hyderabad. Specifically, Datla’s researchcenters on the establishment and initial decades of intellectual activitiesat Hyderabad’s innovative and Urdu-medium Osmania University. In the book’s opening chapter, Datla argues that Hyderabad’s leadingMuslim intellectuals and administrators were largely uninterested in epistemologicalquestions about the relationship between Islam and modern Westernforms of knowledge. To underscore this disinterest, she examines Wilfred S.Blunt’s unsuccessful proposal from the late nineteenth-century that the Hyderabadistate build a modern Islamic seminary. Whereas Blunt envisionedan Islamic university as a catalyst for Islamic reform in India, Datla demonstratesthat his Muslim interlocutors remained unconvinced about the necessityof any Protestant-style reformation of Islam. Instead of possessing such boldtheological agendas, leading Hyderabadi educators focused on extending educationalaccess and forging a stronger connection between the values taughtat home and the knowledge acquired at school. They located the solution tothese twin issues in vernacular education. For them, the use of Urdu insteadof Persian, Arabic, or English as the medium of instruction would remove theexisting language barriers in Hyderabad’s education system and simultaneouslyensure a greater continuity between home and school cultures. Accordingto Datla it was this focus on vernacular education, not Islamic reform, thatinspired Osmania University’s founding in 1918.The second chapter provides an in-depth examination of the university’sTranslation Bureau and its projects designed to reform Urdu into a modernscientific language. She explains that the Osmania faculty hoped to ...

Abstract:
The present study examines the perceptual judgments of English lexical items and English lexical stress by Urdu ESL (Note 1) (English as Second Language) learners. The analysis discusses the different sound systems of both languages and their syllabification system coupled with the stress patterns. The stimuli of 50 high frequency English words were designed as data collection tool for counting the number of syllables and for marking lexical stress as follows: 9 monosyllabic, 11 disyllabic, 10 tri-syllabic, 10 four-syllabic and 10 five-syllabic words. All participating subjects were 40 under graduate students from the department of computer sciences, Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) Karachi. The findings of the study show English lexical items were syllabified with different numbers and primary stressed syllables were also marked with different places of the lexical items, however, data also show the correct syllabification and the right placement of lexical stress which is a strong evidence manifesting as Urdu-accented English perceived and produced by Urdu ESL learners.

Abstract:
This research aims to investigate the language attitudes and linguistic beliefs among private University academics in Lahore. It delves into the intricate interplay between Pakistan's national and its official language, investigating their influence on the perspectives of private University teachers’ language attitudes and beliefs in Lahore. Employing Spolsky's national language policy theory (2004), the study focuses on female English academics working in private Universities. Based on the observation that the majority of the faculty members of the English department are females, the research sample includes 50 female English academics working in eight private Universities in Lahore. Considering the complexity of the field of language beliefs and the linguistic diversity in Lahore, a mixed-method research (MMR) approach has been employed. The research uses an explanatory sequential approach; the quantitative data collection through an online survey was followed by short interviews of 10 randomly selected participants. A descriptive approach has been used to analyze the quantitative and the qualitative data side-by-side; the quantitative data has been analyzed using bar graphs that were obtained from Google Forms, whereas the qualitative data has been analyzed by manual thematic analysis. The findings of the study reveal slight signs of linguistic biases towards the three prevalent languages in Lahore i.e.: Urdu, English, and Punjabi. Future researchers can benefit from this research to study the language attitudes and language beliefs among either Urdu or English academics working in government Universities. Comparative analysis between the current and future research endeavors promises to enrich this field further.

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) patients using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire. This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro. We used the consecutive sampling technique to recruit patients who were clinically diagnosed with OSMF (n = 112). Data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, which contains a total of 26 questions. The first two questions, related to overall QoL and overall health status, were evaluated separately. The remaining questions (3–26), which represented four domains—physical, psychological, social, and environmental health—were evaluated separately. Patients were asked questions in their native language (Urdu). The relationship between these four domains of life was evaluated with gender, age categories, functional staging, and habit duration using the independent t-test to determine statistical significance. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to assess the reliability of the WHOQOL-BREF domains. The overall QoL of the OSMF patients was considerably poor, and the majority of the patients were unsatisfied with their oral health status. The age variable significantly affected the scores of all domains except for social relationships, whereas habit duration and functional staging of OSMF did not significantly affect the scores of all domains. The domains of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire (translated into the Urdu language) showed good reliability, except for social relationships.

Abstract:
Speech etiquette is an essential part of culture, behavior and human communication. Based upon a theoretical framework of politeness and face-threatening acts (FTAs), this study investigates cultural differences in apology responses (ARs) moderated by the threatened face type and the relationship between participants. A discourse completion test, consists of twelve situations is used for data collection. The data was collected from 150 Pakistani Urdu speakers (teachers, doctors, army personals, lawyers, journalists and academicians) working in different institutions and 30 British English speakers (faculty members of English Department, Coventry University, UK, Leeds University, UK and British Association of Applied Linguistics members). The findings reveal that Pakistanis are found using more positive face threatening apology responses (Acceptance and Acknowledgment) including Absolution, Dismissal, Intensifiers, and Acknowledgement with Thanking, Advice, and Suggestion, than British speakers who tend to use both positive FTAs (Acceptance) based on Absolution “That’s Okay”, and Dismissal “no worries at all but be careful next time” and negative FTAs based on Evasion with Deflection and Evasion with Thanking. The findings further illustrate that the understanding and demonstration of politeness and face in conversation functions are susceptible to cultural and sociolinguistic variations.

Objective: Identifying parental reasons for self-treating children under ten years of age with antibiotics and theirpublic health implications for creating targeted interventions for antibiotic control reports of infectious disease.Study Design: A Cross-sectional StudyPlace and Duration of Study: From 11- January 2023 to 11-July 2023, this research was carried out at thePeoples university of Medical Health Sciences Nawab Shah Department of Pediatrics.Materials and Methods: 100 kids under ten who got antibiotics from their parents without a prescription wereincluded in the study. Parents were questioned using a pre-made, structured questionnaire written in English andtranslated into Urdu. We investigated the factors that affect parents’ understanding of the hazards associated withoverusing antibiotics as well as their decision to self-administer antibiotics to their children. Results: Important information on parental antibiotic self-medication was found in the research. The antibioticsmost often overused were azithromycin, co-amoxiclav, cefixime, and clarithromycin. The most common reasons forself-administration of antibiotics were fever, skin rashes, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Mothers were the primary initiatorsof antibiotic use, closely followed by male children beginning their consumption. These findings highlight the need forfocused initiatives, especially when it comes to treating common pediatric diseases, to raise parental knowledge of theproper use of antibiotics and the possible hazards associated with indiscriminate self-medication.Conclusion: It is exceedingly unusual for parents to give their kids medications on their own, which leads to theexcessive use of antibiotics and the development of antibiotic resistance. The entire public, especially parents, shouldbe made aware of this situation to halt the danger to global health. Policies that prohibit easy access to antibioticsshould be applied with greater efficacy. Keywords: Parental antibiotic self-medication, Children Causes Awareness, Antibiotic resistance

Abstract:
The objectives of the research are 1) To assess the relationship in emotional distress, social isolation and psychological well-being among care givers of children with cleft lip and cleft palate. 2) To confirm mediating role of social isolation between emotional distress and wellbeing. This cross-sectional correlational research was conducted in Department of Psychology, University of Gujrat after approval from ASRB and data was collected between January to April, 2021. A sample of 200 caregivers visiting cleft hospital in Gujrat with their children who have cleft lip and cleft palate was purposively selected. There were 96 males and 104 females between age range 20 to 75 years old (M=34.71, SD=10.80). Majority was educated, residing in rural areas of Gujrat in joint family system. Urdu versions of three standardized scales were used for data collection, Caregiver Social Isolation Scale (CSIS, Shafiq & Amwar-ul-Mustafa, 2022), Psychological Wellbeing Scale (PWS, Boztepe, Çınar, & Özgür, 2020) and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21, Lovibond, & Lovibond, 1995) to measure emotional distress. Permissions were taken before using the scales from the test developers and translators. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between emotional distress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress), social isolation and psychological well-being among caregivers of children with cleft lip and cleft palate. Social Isolation has positive significant positive relationship with depression, Anxiety, stress and negative significant relationship with psychological well-being and has mediated either partially or fully among them. Depression has partially strengthened social isolation to mediate with wellbeing of caregivers. However, anxiety and stress has completely enhanced this withdrawal to weaken their sense of wellness. Implications are discussed in the light of the findings. Keywords: Caregivers, Child, Hospitalized, Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate, Congenital Abnormalities, Social Isolation.

Abstract:
IntroductionCardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an important strategy to bring cardiac patients back to a normal life after a cardiac event. The benefits of CR as part of secondary prevention are widely known among people who have undergone myocardial infarction or revascularisation. As evidenced by several systematic reviews and meta-analyses, home-based CR (HBCR) has similar or greater effects on health-related quality of life, health outcomes, physical activity, anxiety and unplanned visits to the emergency department as compared with centre-based CR. The purpose of this study is to develop a contextual HBCR intervention and evaluate its effects on quality of life, health behaviours, bio-physiological parameters and emergency hospital visits of patients with coronary artery diseases in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods and analysisThis study will employ a mixed-method exploratory sequential research design. The researchers will invite 15–20 cardiac patients and 12–15 healthcare providers for semi-structured interviews in the qualitative phase of the study. Once the intervention is developed and validated through the qualitative phase, the outcomes will be evaluated through a single-blinded randomised control trial in the quantitative phase. A total of 118 patients with acute coronary syndrome will be recruited through a screening checklist and randomly allocated into the control and intervention groups (59 patients in each group). The inductive coding approach will be used for the thematic analysis of qualitative data, whereas the quantitative data will be analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS to see the difference within the groups, between groups and between three intervals.Ethics and disseminationThe Ethical Review Committee of Aga Khan University and Mayo Hospital Lahore under the registration number 2023-8282-24191 and No/75749MH have approved this study protocol, respectively. Abstract:
Abstract This is a translation of two prefaces to Urdu translations of Arabic- and English-language histories, published in 1921 and 1922, respectively, around the topos of medieval Muslim Spain. Both translations were prepared by Maulavī Ḳhalīl ur-Raḥmān, who is also the writer of the first preface. The second preface is an introduction by Muḥammad ʿInāyatullāh written partly to acknowledge the immense labor undertaken by Ḳhalīl ur-Raḥmān, and partly to introduce the larger project of translating Islamic histories into Urdu. The first translation is of Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Maqqarī at-Tilmisānī’s (d. 1632) Andalusian history, written in 1617 in Arabic and titled Nafḥ ut̤-T̤īb (The Breath of Perfume). The Urdu translation was published from Aligarh in November 1921. The second is a translation of S. P. Scott’s (1846–1929) English-language history written in 1904, The History of the Moorish Empire in Europe, which was published in Lahore in 1922 under the Urdu title Aḳhbār ul-Undulus. Through these prefaces, Ḳhalīl ur-Raḥmān’s translations reveal a vibrant world of translational activities centered around the Department of Composition and Translation in Osmania University, Hyderabad Deccan. Both prefaces demonstrate the centrality of the practice of translation in the project of (re)claiming the history of Muslim medieval Spain specifically, and Islamic history broadly. Both prefaces take up the context of translating medieval Spain into Urdu as an opportunity to meditate on global Islamic histories and the role of translation in reviving connections lost because of colonial violence. At the same time, Ḳhalīl ur-Raḥmān’s translations of these voluminous works of Andalusian history are not a one-off event, but signal a much larger, concerted effort to bring (back) al-Andalus into Urdu. At the same time, even as the two prefaces together seek to bring historical knowledge into Urdu, they themselves constitute significant intellectual productions in their own right, comprising intensive research around the idea of Islamic history writing in Urdu. Both Ḳhalīl ur-Raḥmān and Muḥammad ʿInāyatullāh engage with multiple strands of scholarship, ranging from past Islamic scholars writing in Arabic, nineteenth-century Orientalist accounts, as well as works by Urdu- and English-language scholars contemporaneous to them. Straddling these multiple worlds, these texts together provide a meditation on the role of translation and history writing in the elaboration of a Muslim intellectual production in colonial modernity.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The upper limb functional index is broadly used outcome measure for musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb. The main objective of the study was to translate and validate the upper limb functional index (ULFI) outcome measure in the Urdu language. Methods Upper limb functional index was translated into Urdu language using Beaton et al. guidelines through forward and backward translation along with the expert committee reviews. Two fifty (n = 250) Urdu-speaking patients with sub-acute or chronic conditions of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders were included in the study. The mean age was 32.33 ± 4.67 years. The data were collected from the physical therapy department of The University of Lahore Teaching hospital. All participants completed the upper limb functional index-Urdu (ULFI-U), Numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), Quick Disability of arm, shoulder, and hand (QuickDash), and (health survey) SF-12 at baseline while only ULFI-U at day three. Reliability was assessed through internal consistency by Cronbach’s alpha and test-retest reliability by intra-class correlation (ICC). Content validity was measured by Lynn and Lawshee method. Spearman’s correlation has been used to measure criterion validity. The construct validity was measured through hypothesis testing. The structural validity has been explained through factor analysis by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using Maximum likelihood extraction (MLE) with Promax rotation. Results The English version of ULFI was translated into the Urdu language with minor alterations. The Urdu version ULFI has demonstrated high levels of reliability with intra-class correlation (ICC2,1= 0.91) and Cronbach’s alpha (α = 0.94). The content validity index found as 0.808, the criterion validity for ULFI-U correlating with quick Dash was found excellent (r = 0.845) and ULFI-U established strong correlation with 6 domains of SF-12(r = 0.697 to 0.767) and weak correlation with its 2 domains and NPRS(r = 0.520). A two-factor structure was obtained using EFA. Conclusions The ULFI-U is a valid and reliable patient-reported outcome (PRO) that can be used to assess upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in Urdu-speaking patients. Trial registration This study was registered in the U. S National Library on clinicaltrial.gov under registration no. NCT05088096. (Date: 21/10/2021).

Abstract:
Background and Objective: Choline is an essential nutrient related to vitamin B complex activity. It can be received through different food sources. It is an important component of acetylcholine which is involved in different brain functions. The present study is designed to assess the behavioral effects of choline chloride in animal models. Methods: This case-control study was performed in the Department of Biochemistry, Federal Urdu University, Karachi for eight months from May 2022 to December 2022. Twenty-four adult male albino Wister rats were divided into four groups, one control and three test groups. Choline chloride dissolved in saline was given intraperitoneally at 25mg/ml, 50mg/ml and 100mg/ml to the test groups respectively, and saline was given to the control animals for two weeks. Memory and depression-like symptoms were monitored. Morris water maze and brain acetylcholine levels were used for memory functions and force swimming test was performed to monitor depression-like symptoms. Results: The present study showed significantly improving memory functions and increase in immobility time exhibited by choline-treated rats indicating depression-like symptoms in rats. The present investigation also shows that serum level as well as glucose level increase in dose dependent manners. Increased depression-like symptoms may be attributed due to onset of diabetes or increased glucose concentration. Conclusion: In conclusion choline administration at different doses (25mg/ml, 50mg/ml, and 100mg/ml) produces behavioral and biochemical effects in rats.
