The hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is a flagship species for invertebrate conservation efforts by the European Union. This taxon has recently been revealed as a species complex likely encompassing five cryptic species. The northernmost population of Osmoderma is found on the island of Ruissalo in Turku, Finland. This population has been protected as species O. eremita, but its true species affinity has never been established. To resolve its identity,we sequenced themitochondrial COI gene from seven specimens sampled in Ruissalo. Based on a phylogenetic hypothesis ge

About Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli, 1763) in Switzerland The finding of fragments of Osmoderma eremita (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae) in September 2009, at the base of an oak (Quercus robur) in Geneva's countryside, suggests that this beetle of national importance still occurs in the canton of Geneva. The survival of this species relies on the availability of old hollow trees. These have largely disappeared with the intensification of land use and the changes in sylvopastoral practices. The creation and tending of hedge networks hosting large old trees would allow not only to preserve an

The genus Osmoderma is a flagship taxon of invertebrate conservation in Europe and encompasses a complex of four accepted species. While species limits amongst Osmoderma have been intensively studied, patterns of intraspecific variation are poorly known. In this paper, the authors focus on clarifying the phylogeographic structure of the East European Osmoderma barnabita using samples from Croatia to Finland. Samples of hind legs were collected from populations in Latvia and Finland (n=186) and combined with previously-published sequences from GenBank and museum specimens (n=10). In a partial s

Research, monitoring and development of preservation strategies for threatened species are often limited by national borders even though a global perspective would be more appropriate. In this study, we collected data on the occurrence of a threatened beetle, Osmoderma eremita, associated with tree hollows in 2,142 localities from 33 countries in Europe where it is or has been present. The larvae develop in tree hollows and very few observations of larvae have been observed in dead logs on the ground. As long as there is a suitable tree hollow, it appears that O. eremita may use any tree speci

Abstract In 2014, an inventory of protected Natura 2000 saproxylic beetles from the Prigoria-Bengeşti protected area in Gorj County (Romania) was made. Four species were identified: Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli, 1763), Lucanus cervus (Linnaeus, 1758), Morimus funereus Mulsant, 1862 and Cerambyx cerdo Linnaeus, 1758. Using GIS mapping analysis, the distribution of these species was established in terms of the habitats described in the Natura 2000 framework. Lucanus cervus occurred over more than half of the Prigoria-Bengeşti protected area, with an overall area of occupancy of 26.10%. Morimus fun

This thesis introduces the use of molecular methods for the conservation of several species of endangered saproxylic beetles in Europe. It focuses on the questions related to the DNA preservation and microsatellites development, as well as the evolutionary history and conservation of threatened species. Using the combination of mitochondrial and nuclear markers, the genetic diversity and reintroduction history of Cerambyx cerdo was assessed and the phylogeography of Rosalia alpina from the whole range of its distribution was studied. Abstract Trunk hollows in old, deciduous trees harbor a specialized insect fauna that consists mainly of beetles and flies (Dajoz 2000). Today, this fauna is threatened in Europe due to habitat loss (Speight 1989). To enable efficient conservation work in order to preserve this fauna, there is a need for detailed knowledge about habitat requirements of the species. Field inventories of presence or absence suggest that the spatial structure of the habitat is important for several beetle species, as they are absent or occur in lower frequencies in individual hollow trees or in small stands (Rani
