The article analyzes the oral narratives of ostarbeiters about labor slavery in Germany during the Second World War. The folklore of this thematic group is an integral part of the huge array of Ukrainian folk literature, generated as a result of repressions of the fighters for freedom and state independence of Ukraine under the military occupation of the 20th century aimed at subjugating its people and subjecting them to the will of their enslavers.
It is noted that in the territory captured by the Nazi invaders, the involvement of the able-bodied population in various jobs locally and a

Hitler's wars for living space sent millions of Germans abroad and aggravated a severe labor shortage at home. German authorities recruited or forcibly transported up to seven million foreign workers to the Reich from 1939 to 1945. A great many of these civilian workers, POWs, and slave laborers came from Poland, the Ukraine, and western areas of the Soviet Union, that is, homelands the Nazi regime stigmatized as particularly “inferior.” Nazi racial thinking and wartime security concerns produced an extensive set of discriminatory measures aimed at the subjugation and strict control of Slavs.

Introduction. The article introduces original research reconstructions consistently aimed at identifying individuals of Turkic origin who had resided in Rostov Oblast before they were relocated for forced labor to the Third Reich. The approach is not that traditional for Russia’s historiographic tradition that primarily addresses systemic analyses of such issues in political, social and territorial perspectives. The study involves a total of six Soviet citizens whose personal portraits have been reconstructed to the greatest possible extent with the aid of available historical evidence. Materi

For a long time, the Ostarbeiters were silent figures in the field of historical memory, unable to speak openly about the tragic events of their past. This article examines how former Ostarbeiters overcame their traumatic experiences in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. We have turned to a wide range of sources which help us to look at the issue from different angles, and draw attention to the place occupied by former Ostarbeiters in the official narrative of the Great Patriotic War and in the memorial space. We further trace the origins and development of artistic images of Ostarbeiters, us
