Abstract:

ZusammenfassungDie Österreichische Nationalbibliothek hat 2003 ein Projekt zu Erfassung von nach wie vor in ihren Beständen lagerndem Raubgut aus der NS-Zeit initiiert. 52 403 Werke wurden nach zweijährigen Recherchen als bedenkliche Erwerbungen eingestuft und werden seither, nach entsprechenden Beschlüssen des österreichischen Kunstrückgabebeirats, an die Erben der Geschädigten übergeben. Die Rückstellungen sind weit fortgeschritten, über 49 000 Objekte wurden bereits restituiert. Daneben ist die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek um größtmögliche Transparenz hinsichtlich ihrer NS-Vergangenheit bemüht: Zwei Ausstellungen und zahlreiche Publikationen zum Thema sowie eine lückenlose Erschließung und Öffnung des hauseigenen Archivs zeichnen ein Bild der Vorgänge in der NS-Zeit, der Restitutionen in der Nachkriegszeit sowie der aktuellen Recherchen und geben damit der Öffentlichkeit Einblick in ein dunkles Kapitel der nationalen Gedächtnisinstitution.

Abstract:

Zusammenfassung 1965/66 erweiterte die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek ihre Räumlichkeiten für Leser und bezog Teile der Neuen Burg der Wiener Hofburg. Der folgende Beitrag erläutert Bauprojekte wie die Errichtung des Bücherspeichers unter dem Burggarten sowie zahlreiche Sanierungsprojekte, die nach der Reformierung des Bundesmuseengesetzes erfolgten, wonach die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek ihre Vollrechtsfähigkeit erhielt und als wissenschaftliche Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts agieren konnte.

Abstract:

Autor przedstawia dzieje Austriackiej Biblioteki Narodowej (ABN; Österreichische Nationalbibliothek), której zasoby sięgają XIV w. Następnie omawia genezę, metodologię i zawartość serii założonej przez Franza Wickhoffa, wydawanej od 1905 r. pt. Beschreibendes Verzeichnis der illuminierten Handschriften in Österreich, stanowiącej opisowy wykaz rękopisów iluminowanych w Austrii. W przypadku katalogowania rękopisów dawnej biblioteki dworskiej (Hofbibliothek), a od 1920 r. ABN, przełomem stało się zainicjowanie przez Juliusa Schlossera i Hermanna Juliusa Hermanna podserii: Die Illuminierten Handschriften und Inkunabeln der Nationalbibliothek in Wien. W latach 1923-1938 wydano 15 tomów tej podserii z opisami ponad 1500 manuskryptów. Po II wojnie światowej prace te kontynuował Franz Unterkircher publikując w 1957 i 1959 r. dwa tomy inwentarza obejmującego wszystkie (ponad 5000 jednostek) rękopisy iluminowane ABN oraz Otton Pächt, który zainicjował nową serię wydawniczą pt. Die Illuminierten Handschriften und Inkunabeln der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, wydawaną od 1974 r. Jego następca Gerhard Schmidt zainicjował projekt pt. „Szkoły środkowoeuropejskie” – Mitteleuropäische Schulen (MeSch). Jego celem jest skatalogowanie środkowoeuropejskich rękopisów iluminowanych.

Abstract:

Zusammenfassung Mit der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung entwickelte sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten ein steigendes Bewusstsein für die Herausforderungen bei der langfristigen Erhaltung der Informationen. Dies ist auch im vollen Umfang in den Kultur- und Gedächtnisinstitutionen angekommen, die in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß in der Lage sind, eigenständig diesen Anforderungen nachzukommen. Die Österreichische Bibliothekenverbund und Service GmbH bietet seit Juni 2022 „Digitale Langzeitarchivierung“ als konsortialen Dienst an. Die Eckpunkte eines konsortial geeigneten Produkts wurden in einer europaweiten Ausschreibung gemeinsam mit der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek als Erstkunden festgelegt. Die Implementierung des Dienstes auf Basis des Produkts Libsafe von Libnova erfolgte ebenfalls gemeinsam mit der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek in einem mehrmonatigen Projekt. Der Artikel behandelt die für einen konsortialen Betrieb notwendigen Anforderungen, deren technische Umsetzung, erforderlichen Komponenten und Funktionalitäten, sowie organisatorische und wirtschaftliche Aspekte. Insbesondere die Rolle einer Verbundzentrale als Dienstleister wird herausgearbeitet. So werden die Möglichkeiten beschrieben, zentral Kompetenzen, Wissen und Infrastruktur zu bündeln, um einem breiten Spektrum an Institutionen digitale Langzeitarchivierung (LZA) zu ermöglichen. Der Service richtet sich daher ausdrücklich auch an Institutionen, die nicht Mitglieder des österreichischen Bibliothekenverbundes sind. Die enge Kooperation mit dem Kunden steht dabei im Zentrum. Der Dienst umfasst den kompletten Betrieb der erforderlichen Hard- und Software sowie Konfiguration des Langzeitarchivierungssystems, Datenanalyse, Einrichten geeigneter Archivierungspläne und Workflows.

Abstract:

Die VÖB-AG NS-Provenienzforschung hat erstmals eine Liste mit Restitutionsfällen aus österreichischen Bibliotheken zusammengestellt. Auf der Webseite der VÖB (http://www.univie.ac.at/voeb/kommissionen/ag-nsprovenienzforschung/) kann diese Liste eingesehen werden. Mit Stand Jänner 2015 sind insgesamt 205 Restitutionsfälle aus elf Bibliotheken dokumentiert. Es sind dies folgende Bibliotheken: Bibliothek des Kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien, Bibliothek des Österreichischen Museums für angewandte Kunst / Gegenwartskunst, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Parlamentsbibliothek, Oberösterreichische Landesbibliothek, Universitätsbibliothek der Medizinischen Universität Wien, Universitätsbibliothek Graz, Universitätsbibliothek Salzburg, Universitätsbibliothek Wien, Universitätsbibliothek der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien und Wienbibliothek im Rathaus. Fälle, die bereits entschieden wurden, aber mangels Erben nicht abgeschlossen werden können, sind nur teilweise enthalten und wurden als offen deklariert. Similarly, on Cod. 17561b we read: ‘Dieses unvollständige Requiem ist aus zwei Bruchstücken zusammengesetzt: (1) Bl. 65–86 (alt 11–32) wurden vom Abbé Stadler gekauft. Upozoravamo na tri dosad nepoznata prijepisa epilija De raptu Cerberi Jakova Bunića. Prvi je prijepis identiﬁciran prema katalogu rukopisa milanske Biblioteca Ambrosiana (X304 inf.), kao dio bilježaka Pietra Mazzucchellija (1762-1829), knjižničara Ambrosiane; ovdje tek bilježimo njegovo postojanje. Druga se dva prijepisa nalaze u Beču, u Österreichische Nationalbibliothek; prvi, pod signaturom Cod. Ser. n. 12881, donosi, sudeći po lectiones variae, srednju fazu teksta Bunićeva epilija, verziju između prvotiska iz 1490. i drugog izdanja iz 1526; po luksuznoj izvedbi sudeći, prijepis je namijenjen nekom posebnom, no neidentiﬁciranom adresatu. Treći prijepis, pod signaturom Cod. 3111, donosi De raptu Cerberi na f. 74r-90r; sudeći po marginalnim bilješkama, prijepis je izradio njemačko-austrijski humanist Johannes Cuspinianus (Johann Spiessheimer, 1473-1529), u svojim mladim danima - između proljeća 1491. i ožujka 1492, dakle ubrzo nakon objavljivanja Bunićeva prvotiska - u Würzburgu.

Abstract:

MS Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, 5311, fol. 137r, contains an unusual record of astronomical observations, among which are measurements of solar and stellar altitudes carried out with large quadrants in Bologna, Montpellier, and Genoa between 1305 and 1312. An analysis of this observational data reveals a high level of precision and accuracy, as the astronomer responsible achieved a mean error of only 0;2° during an extended run of measurements of solar noon altitudes made between December 1305 and March 1306. Other passages on the same manuscript page mention Johannes de Luna, a German astrologer-astronomer active in Bologna between c.1299 and 1312. References to his name in 14th-century manuscripts shed light on his involvement in contemporary attempts to correct the Toledan Tables and revise their model of precession on an observational basis.

Abstract:

Abstract The focus of this article is the manner in which Thomas Ebendorfer of Hasselbach, a Viennese theologian lecturing on Book I of the Sentences in 1421, deals with the topic of virtus sermonis and the relation between theology, philosophy, and logic in his Prologue from the autograph MS Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, 4369 (ff. 7r–8v). By combining a double classification of each science (into acquisita vs. infusa) with a double perspective of their relation (temporal vs. natural), and by making a strong claim for theology’s role in advancing new logical theories, Ebendorfer’s view reflects a progressive awareness of the distinction between theology and philosophy which, in turn, entails very different applications of virtus sermonis in the two sciences. An edition of the Prologue is provided in the Appendix.

Abstract:

With the assistance of sources from the Berg Nachlaß at the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna, this study readdresses a practice cited by those declaring Berg's twelve-tone techniques peripheral to a history of modernism: his use of more than one twelve-tone row in a composition. This technique, vital to Berg's work but proscribed by Schoenberg and the unity so often idealized in Schoenberg's writings, is found to have originated with the composer and theorist Fritz Heinrich Klein (1892-1977). Documentary evidence indicates that Klein's op. 14 Variationen proved especially significant as Berg developed a personal epistemology of twelve-tone music. Examination of Berg's debt to Klein illuminates the large-scale structure of Berg's Lyric Suite, impels exploration of the correlations that allow one to speak of an organic relationship between "row forms," and encourages clarification of Schoenberg's, Berg's, and Hauer's historical relevance to the origins of dodecaphony.

Abstract:

Abstract This article points to some geographical and historical conditions of scholarship and manuscript culture in Zaydi Yemen. The place of copying is only sporadically given in the colophons of Arabic manuscripts. This is confirmed by a systematic investigation into the catalogues of the Berlin collection presented here. In particular, this article discusses the presence of place names in the colophons and notes of Yemeni manuscripts, based on an examination of 750 volumes held in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, and the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. It reveals that manuscripts from the Zaydi tradition were copied in numerous locations, but also shows the relevance of other places with respect to the transmission of knowledge. The wide range of fifty villages and smaller towns that appear in the colophons is significant for Yemen and can be explained by the long tradition of Zaydi scholars settling in the tribal territory in villages (qarya) or settlements called hijra (pl. hijar). The result remains surprising in so far as older catalogues of Yemeni manuscripts seem to be erratic and inconsistent in providing information on places of copying.

Abstract:

The 6th century Codex Sinopensis or Sinope Gospels (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France) is one of the most precious purple codices that survive from the Late Antique period. Together with the Vienna Genesis (Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek) and the Rossano Gospels (Rossano Calabro, Museo Diocesano), it has an unusually rich decorative apparatus with scenes representing biblical episodes. It can be, therefore, considered one of the most important preserved artistic productions of the early medieval era. The manuscript has been subjected to a non-invasive diagnostic campaign to evaluate the quality of the colourants used in its decoration, to understand how the parchment was coloured, and to carry out a comparison with the Vienna Genesis and the Rossano Gospels. The techniques used were UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry with optical fibres (FORS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), spectrofluorimetry, and optical microscopy. Analyses highlighted the presence of ultramarine blue, which, besides the use of pure gold for the ink and paint, certifies the high value of the manuscript. In addition, this must be seen as one of the earliest examples of its use in paintings. The purple colour of the parchment was identified as orchil, a dye extracted from lichens, similar to the results of analytical investigations carried out on other purple codices, and not the expected Tyrian purple dye.

This article examines a number of Carolingian liturgical manuscripts (Wolfenbuttel Herzog August Bibliothek Wissenbourg 91, Cologne Dombibliothek MS 138, Vienna Österreichische Nationalbibliothek cod.ser.n. 2762 and Paris Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal 227) each containing texts now known as the ordines romani. These texts are "stage directions" for the liturgy, distinguished by their reference to the practices of the church of Rome. While the ordines romani certainly give precious information about Roman liturgical practice, the Frankish contribution to shaping and displaying these texts inline with their own priorities and usages must be acknowledged too. For example, these manuscripts all combine ordines romani with texts about Roman history and topography. For these readers, the desired imitation of Roman liturgical practice was not about copying any particular text or practice by rote, but a deeper form of participation that involved the construction of an image of Rome across a whole manuscript. The given image of Rome responded to the institutional or personal needs animating the manuscript. Since the editio princeps by Giovanni Battista Pio (B, dated to 1520), a well-established tradition of scholars has preferred the vulgate reading negare to necare, a reading found in V (Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, lat. 277, dated to 1502) and R (Rome, Bibl. Corsiniana, Caetani 158; c.1520/30). ZusammenfassungDer Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über aktuelle Entwicklungen der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek (ÖNB) im Bereich der digitalen Bibliothek und der Online-Services. Folgende vier Themen werden vorgestellt: ein Zwischenbericht zum Projekt „Austrian Books Online“ (ABO), die digitale Präsentation des Prunksaals in Kooperation mit Google Arts & Culture, die neue Webseite der ÖNB und darin integriert der neue Forschungsblog der ÖNB.

ZusammenfassungDieser Beitrag zur Digitalisierung des historischen Buchbestandes der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek legt einen Schwerpunkt auf die Herausforderung von Logistik und Metadatenbearbeitung. Ausgehend von einer kritischen Betrachtung zur Nutzbarkeit der erstellten Daten wird der Bogen geschlagen von der aktuellen Präsentation der Digitalisate über den Book-Viewer zu bereits gängigen Forschungsmethoden der digitalen Geisteswissenschaften, die anhand des Projekts Travelogues illustriert werden.
