Abstract:
Tree peony (Paeonia section Moutan DC.) is a famous ornamental plant, and P. ostii has been used for seed oil production in China because it is rich in α-linolenic acid. P. ostii has some resistance to drought, but lack of water can severely hinder its growth and development in arid areas. In order to clarify drought stress induced physiological and molecular changes of P. ostia, its physiological and transcriptomic analyses were performed under drought stress, and we found that P. ostii leaves drooped significantly 12 days after treatment and observed a significant increase in all detected physiological indices in response to drought treatment except leaf water content, chlorophyll, and carotenoid content. Meanwhile, the activity of three antioxidant enzymes basically increased under drought treatment. Moreover, drought treatment significantly reduced photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters except non-photochemical quenching (qN), and maintained more intact mesophyll cell structures. Additionally, many differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found by transcriptome sequencing, which play an important role in P. ostia drought tolerance by controlling a variety of biological processes, including the reactive oxygen species (ROS) system, chlorophyll degradation and photosynthetic competency, fatty acid metabolism, proline metabolism, biosynthesis of secondary metabolism, and plant hormone metabolism. These results provide a better understanding of P. ostii responses to drought stress.

Abstract:
The language is a specific type of human activity, «a shape of thought». As a means of communication, it acts as an exponent of the speaker’s spirit and world outlook. The issue of shaping a linguistic world view in students of non-linguistic colleges and, in particular, the problem of the language impact on the way of view of life still requires its solution. The author of the article harks back to the history of foreign linguistic school of thoughts of German linguists Wilhelm von Humboldt (founder of theoretical linguistics) and Johann Leo Weisgerber (who proposed the term «the linguistic world view»), of American ethno-linguists Edward Sepir (author of the comprehensive typological classification of languages of the world) and Benjamin Whorf (author of the theory of linguistic relativity), of an English philosopher John Langsho Ostin, one of the creators of the theory of speech acts. The article mentions some ideas of the Russian world view presented in works of the national linguists, such as A.A. Potebnya, A. Vezhbitskaya, Ye.S. Kubryakova, V.M. Vorobyev. Drawing on many years of experience of teaching the English language in departments of international relations, linguistics and translation studies in St. Petersburg Institute for External Economic Relations, Economics and Law, the author examines the methods of shaping the linguistic world view in students of International Relations and Linguistics. As an example, the author brings forth a scenario of the lecture course in the discipline «Professional Foreign Language (English) in Studying the Topic «National Identity».

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis the study of the suburbs of Ostia (Rome, Italy) took place at different levels of study, from the macro scale of the entire neighborhoods to the micro scale of the single stratigraphic trench. The archaeological evidence of the porta Marina area and of the “Trastevere Ostiense” have been analyzed and filed as Topographical Units and recorded in a GIS. For each structure data were collected either through the consultation of archives, through field surveys, aerial photography, direct examinations and excavation essays. 148 artifacts from the old excavations were recorded and inserted in a data base created ad hoc. Where possible, spatial data was associated with the objects, with the positioning in the place of discovery within the GIS. The survey of the archaeological evidences of the “Trastevere Ostiense” allowed to recognize a densely built territory, with a chronology that goes from first to at least the fifth century AD. Among the types of buildings identified, the “horreum” seems to be the prevailing. The precise positioning of some excavation trenches of 1957 at the loop of the Tiber has allowed to identify a flood zone of second-third century AD reclaimed and built. At the same time, on the other side, the Via Ostiense was rebuilt further south due to erosion. The overall study of the urbanistic evolution of the suburban area of porta Marina has allowed to identify 13 main phases of life, from the first century BC until the 6th century AD, in addition to two phases of spoliation and a phase of sea erosion of the Middle Age. Among the main novelties there is the discovery of a notable construction activity dating back to the Julio-Claudian age to the Flavia age, previously almost unknown, which can be partially connected to funerary buildings. It is very probable, in the light of the new data, that there was a necropolis outside porta Marina, which was completely dismantled during the Hadrianic urban renovation and the thermal development of the maritime district. The large-scale analytical approach, also thanks to the chronological extremes derived from the excavations carried out with the Ostia Marina Project, has led to a completely renewed vision of the city's maritime sector. The presumed preservation of late Republican funerary monuments in the imperial era turned out to be a not entirely exact theory, the result of the distorted vision created with the E-42 restorations and demolitions. The stratigraphic analysis shows a partial obliteration of the funerary monuments already occurred by the end of the first century. A.D. due to the raising of the walking surfaces. The research on buildings built close to and above the Late-Republic walls made it possible to highlight that they quickly lost the defensive functions, but continued to be respected until the beginning of the second century AD. Subsequently, the eastern part functioned as an aqueduct, while the western part was demolished to build new buildings. An arch was built in place of the porta Marina door, to set the limit between town and suburb. Starting from some aerial photos, the plan of a large building, located in the eastern unexcavated portion of the porta Marina suburban area, was completed. The particular form of the complex allows to hypothesize a link to the “foro ad mare” built by Aureliano, mentioned in the Historia Augusta. The study of the late-antique phases revealed a remarkable vitality of the district throughout the IV until the beginning of the fifth century AD, while during the first half of the 5th century AD strong signs of abandonment appear. The probable effects of the earthquake of 443 AD were found, starting from the traces of collapse found in at least four buildings. Another important acquisition concerns the relationship between the city and the sea and changes in the coastline over the centuries

Abstract:
This thesis, defended in October 2011 and rated "summa cum laude", evaluates testimonies that became known until 2011, which in the Middle East point to a recognition and worship of the Egyptian gods Isis, Sarapis, Apis, Harpocrates, etc. , Basic material was collected with the help of a DAAD scholarship in 2003-2004 in all Levant countries. However, in the course of these researches, a sprawling material base led to the focus of the dissertation on the southern Levant. In particular, the centuries of Hellenistic and Roman domination of the area were examined more closely.

Abstract:
The coastal area of the city of Ostia is characterized by a concentration of bath facilities built between the end of the 1st c. AD and the Late Antiquity period. The aim of this work is on the two main baths complexes discovered in the late 18 and mid 19 centuries, and extensively excavated in the first half of the 1970s: the Porta Marina Baths and the Terme Marittime. Their results were left unpublished, except for few specific studies on mosaic floors, architectonical elements and statuary. On these premises, the field research was organized in four steps: surveying, stratigraphic and technical studies; diachronic/synchronic analysis; interaction between maritime and coastal environments; and parallels with comparable contexts. Furthermore, new technologies have been involved for 3D surveying (UAV-photogrammetry, thermography, geophysical survey) thanks to the multidisciplinary project set up between CCJ, MAP and CEREGE, which turned into an innovative work in terms of methods of analysis.Concurrently, the investigation was extended on written sources based on the documentation of Ostia archives, Archivio Centrale di Stato, and Aerofototeca Nazionale. Ostia inscriptions preserved in the Vatican and Capitoline Museums, and recorded on the manuscripts of the late 18th century by G. Marini (Biblioteca Apostolica) and E.Q. Visconti (BNF Paris), were also included. The main objective was to understand the long-term evolution of these baths in the coastal townscape of Ostia, mainly based on architectural, functional, urbanistic and decor analyses. The project also inquires the legal status of these complexes, their commissioners and property, funding sources, and users

This study deals with the shops of Ostia from the 1st c. B. C. To the 5th c. A. D. Our researches led us to have a reflexion about the part played by shops in the urban, social and economical transformation of Ostia during this period. Archaeological survey and archives bring us a lot of information on shops. They have been mainly built during the 2nd c. A. D. , after the building of the Trajan basin of Portus. This development is linked with the lot of insulae that have been built during this time. Shops decline begins during the middle of the 3rd c. A. D. Shops may be linked with other economical structures such as storehouses, markets, workshops. From the beginning of the 3rd c. A. D. , shops grew in importance while harbour activities were declining. At last, shops have played an important part in the shaping and the evolution of urban territories

The aim of this thesis is the study of a series of votive sculptures found in the Cybele sanctuary, in Ostia, discovered in the late nineteenth centuy and extensively excavated just before World War Two.
Nevertheless, our aim was not just merely presenting a catalogue of the sculptures, but, primarily, stablishing their function and relation within the sanctuary, as an element to take into account for the study of the worship of Cybele and, specifically, of Attys.

Abstract:
Ostia is one of very few cities where it is possible to trace the development from its foundation through to its natural abandonment in the late 6th century AD. Contrary to cities such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, which are frozen in the early imperial periods, it is here possible to create a detailed picture of the structural development during the later Roman era. However, while more than 2/3 of the city area has now been excavated and much already been published, at Ostia, as at so many other sites, the main interest has always been on the Republican and early Imperial periods. There is therefore a great amount of material evidence at Ostia that has previously been neglected, which can provide us with an invaluable insight to the urban landscape of a Roman city. By examining domestic, civic and commercial architecture as it changed the city from the 2nd to the 4th century AD, the impact on all aspects of city life can be traced, thereby providing us with a valuable instrument to test ideas about urban, social or economic development at the heart of the Roman Empire. This study presents a description and an analysis of the visible remains in two areas within regions III and V. A total of some 86 buildings was covered within the sample and individually described. The information gained from this was then used first to assign a date, if only relative, and clarify stages of development within the larger complexes of insulae and regions, and second to assign a function and organisation of the individual building in order to provide a better understanding of the urban landscape of Ostia from the 2nd to the 4th century AD.

Abstract:
The vestiges of Roman theatres are ubiquitous throughout the Mediterranean Basin; these structures are familiar, yet remain relatively unexplored, with only a few studies considering their general place in Roman life. Inspired by research on the theatres and entertainment buildings of more recent times, this study offers an urbanistic perspective on these multipurpose edifices; characteristic of the urbanitas, these were at the same time buildings for theatrical performances, ritual ceremonies, and daily activities; civic and religious meeting places; centres of social interaction. The innovations the Romans made to the architectural theatrical form invented by the Greeks enabled them to redefine the theatre’s place in the city and to incorporate it purposefully into their plans for urbanization. Combining the analysis of ancient textual and pictoral representations of Roman theatres with archaeological case studies, this thesis explores and clarifies the practical and symbolic relationships between the theatre and the city in Roman times. By broadening the scope of investigation and by exploring the dynamic and affective positioning of the theatre into the Roman urban landscape, this thesis reveals these architectural structures to be simultaneously typical and unique, complex and understandable, and ultimately remarkably effective in establishing and embodying the image of the city

Full text
Abstract:
Dorsal surfaces and upstream regions around ostia of aortic branches are favored sites of atherosclerosis. Both asymmetrical stresses in branch walls and disturbed flow patterns have been suggested as contributing to this localization. In the present study, fluorescence images of the thoracic aortic tree of C57 mice were obtained using quantum dot (Qdot) bioconjugate markers for vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and two-photon excitation laser scanning microscopy. The images show that dorsal surfaces and upstream regions of intercostal ostia have a higher intensity of VCAM-1 than the downstream region. We also investigated blood flow patterns and wall shear stress (WSS) in the descending aorta and proximal intercostal branches of C57 mice using micro-CT imaging and ultrasound velocity measurements, combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The latter investigation showed that dynamical wall deformation caused by pulsatile pressure around the ostia induces blood flow patterns which create lower and oscillating WSS in the upstream region and dorsal surface than in the distal region. Comparisons of the Qdot marker and CFD studies demonstrate that the distribution of greater expression of VCAM-1 corresponds with lower and oscillating WSS around the branch ostia. Thus, local wall deformation may contribute to disturbed flow patterns that are known to be associated with increased VCAM-1 expression.

"Moisture sorption isotherms and isosteric heat sorption of habanero pepper (Capsicum chínense) dehydrated powder." In 21st International Drying Symposium. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica València, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ids2018.2018.7637.

Full text
Abstract:
Moisture sorption isotherms of the habanero pepper powder were determined using the Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) method at 20, 25, 35, 45 and 55 °C in a range of water activity from 0.10 to 0.90 at which the processes of drying, packing and storage of habanero pepper are developed. The sorption capacity decreased with increasing temperature at a given water activity and the sorption isotherms showed a sigmoid form (Type II). The hysteresis phenomenon was observed in the sorption isotherms at all temperatures studied and it was more pronounced at temperatures high. The experimental sorption curves were fitting to the GAB, BET and Oswin models. It was concluded that the models that best describe the adsorption and desorption data for habanero pepper dehydrated powder were the GAB and Oswin models. The isosteric heat of water sorption was calculated with the moisture content data in equilibrium. The desorption isotherms present a higher isosteric heat in relation to the adsorption isotherms. In both, the isosteric heat decreased as the moisture content increased. Keywords: Habanero pepper dehydrated powder; Convective drying; Moisture sorption isotherms; Mathematic models

Abstract:
The paper analyses the international financial operations of the USSR in the 1920s via the case of interbank transactions of the Soviet foreign bank in Germany – the Garantie- und Kredit Bank für den Osten (Garkrebo). The study is based on quantitative data from the archival bank accounting reports. It reveals that the State Bank of the USSR was an initiator of the Soviet financial operations abroad. These operations were aimed to the American foreign currency market, particularly to support of Soviet currency (сhervonets) rate
