Remmerswaal, Pieter, and Ad de Gouw. Do you see those parents? A guide for professional work with parents. SWP publishers, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36254/978-90-8560-204-0.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is used in a number of universities in Belgium, the Netherlands and on Dutch Caribbean islands. In the course of an international parenting program of different universities in Europe, participants inquired repeatedly about an English version of our book. This edition answers to that question. But how to translate the different meanings of the first part of the Dutch title into proper English? And also in such a way it can be well understood in other European countries as the special focus of this book? Let us take you shortly along our process of decision making, how to translate the above title. The second part of the title is the easiest to translate: A guide for professionals working with parents. Let us be clear from the start: This book is not about helping parents raising their children. About the content later more, but now shortly about the second part of the Dutch title which seems to have much more possibilities for translation. “Do you understand those parents?”, would be a first option. This can be read as an invitation to try and understand parents, parenthood or parenting of a person, a couple or a group. The first title part in the Dutch version often has an association of difficulty how to understand parents. Or even stronger: the underlying connotation of this question of quickly criticizing their actions and even the tendency to blame them. This question we often heard from students, social workers and from members of different professions in multidisciplinary consulting teams. Our question in reaction : “What is your view of these parents?” was very often followed by a rather negative view on their parenting, based on the assumption: “Why don’t they see the needs of their child?” Apparently for a professional it is more common to keep in mind the vulnerability of a child than that of a parent. The challenge for a great number of care workers who meet children and their parents seems obviously: how to be open minded towards parents? Professionally and parent focussed working with parents is, to our opinion, a question of perspective of the professional. We all tend to look at parents firstly from our professional view on the needs of a child, we call that the child-perspective. But parenthood is more than bringing up a child or knowing how to help them in their growth, also called parenting. Although parents themselves also see as their core business: raising and educating their own child, they are also individuals, partners, family members, and a number of other social roles as a member of the society. For that reason we did choose as the main title: “Do you see those parents?” For trying to take their perspective is primarily seeing their normal daily struggle, with their specific circumstances, their personalities, their histories, their beliefs, their doubts and weaknesses and, last but not least, their possibilities. So, this book does not consider the question: “How to help parents to become better educators?” We try to avoid the word parenting and if we do so in this book, we use it in the meaning of educating their child. But once again, that is not the main focus of this book. Trying to help professionals to support parents in their improving of strength in their parenthood is our first goal. Every family has its own culture, and every person is part of more cultures, local, regional, national and even international. Cultural aspects always count, also in parenthood, but discussing them all would result in a very different content of this book. We try to give general support to students and workers of very different professions and in very different countries and cultures. We do not mention those separately, but we focus in this book on aspects of parenthood which are more or less universal, without generalising parenthood in all different countries and cultures. Our experiences in working with parents was mainly in Holland and Western Europe, so our examples are mostly from this cultural background. We use them not as an example for others how to work, of how to treat parents, but to explain our use in practice of the theory on parenthood which inspired us for so many years. We hope that reading about the use of this theory and our experiences with it will offer support and inspiration to a great number of care workers and professionals in very different disciplines in their daily work. And especially for lecturers, teachers and trainers of students and coaches of professionals who work with children and subsequently with parents to help them to improve their professional attitude toward parents.

Abstract:
Personal property security is an important subject in commercial practice as it is the key to much of the law of banking and sale. This book examines traditional methods of securing debts (such as mortgages, charges, and pledges) on property other than land, describing how these are created, how they must be registered (or otherwise ‘perfected’) if they are to be valid, the rights and duties of the parties, and how the security is enforced if the debt is not paid. This third edition has been updated to cover the wealth of case law, including new cases on control of financial collateral, and relief against forfeiture under a financial collateral arrangement; on retention of title (including the effect of ‘extended’ clauses); estoppel and the HPI register; availability of set-off against assignee; a number of cases on enforcement of security; equitable liens; solicitor’s liens and databases; on priority or purchase money security interests; and the Irish Supreme Court decision on floating charge and crystallization. There have also been significant legislative changes, which are discussed in detail, most notably the 2013 amendments to Companies Act 2006 Part 25, and Cape Town Convention. The book covers traditional security over personal property and also devices that fulfil a similar economic function, such as retention of title and sales of receivables.

This fourth edition has been updated to incorporate recent political and legal developments, including Brexit. The ‘Edinburgh Reforms’, which have followed the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, promise a thorough overhaul of the consumer credit regime. This edition further assesses the implications of the Business Contract Terms (Assignment of Receivables) Regulations 2018, the outlawing of 'ipso facto' clauses by the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act 2020, and the reduced scope of the EU Insolvency Regulation. The treatment of insolvency matters within the framework of the Cape Town Convention is also considered. Covering both traditional security over personal property and also devices that fulfil a similar economic function, such as retention of title and sales of receivables, the book is an indispensable reference work both for practitioners and academics.

Abstract:
Mycobacteria are aerobic bacilli with a lipid-rich cell wall and are widespread both in the environment and in animals. Many species within the genus cause disease in humans, most notably those of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, which cause tuberculosis, and Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy. Several other species, termed non-tuberculous mycobacteria, can cause chronic cutaneous, pulmonary, and disseminated infections. This chapter will briefly review infection with non-tuberculous mycobacteria and Mycobacterium leprae.

Full text
Abstract:
The significance of a palliative care approach for patients with neurological disorders other than dementia is increasingly recognized. Whereas the care for these patients, for example, those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neuron disease, had been incorporated in the initial concept by Dame Cicely Saunders, recent scientific evidence supports this position. The need for palliative care in these patients is underpinned by their frequent wish for hastening death. This chapter describes palliative care approaches for a number of neurological disorders other than dementia. For ALS, palliative care management including specific issues such as respiratory insufficiency or malnutrition are fairly well established. Also, in parkinsonian syndromes, a lot of palliative care needs can be recognized and managed effectively. For patients with multiple sclerosis, the first randomized controlled trial showed clearly positive effects on symptoms as well as usage of health-care resources. The chapter also summarizes the drug use for specific symptom management, accounting for alternative application routes.

Abstract:
Course-focused and comprehensive, the Textbook on series provide an accessible overview of the key areas on the law curriculum. This chapter continues the discussion of the planned purchase of 2 Trant Way, which has an unregistered title, by Barbara Bell. It looks at what Barbara (or, more likely, her professional adviser) will have to do, either before or after exchanging contracts, to ensure that it is safe for her to buy the property. Barbara will need to check two things about the property she is planning to buy. She needs to ensure that: Victoria Ventnor, the vendor, owns the property she is offering to sell; and the property is free from any encumbrances (third-party rights) other than those which have already been revealed. The chapter explains how these two aspects of proving title are dealt with in the unregistered system.

A chronology placing the periodicals on a time line provides an interesting, at-a-glance look at magazines' history. Most of the important magazines are included, except for some sports and women's magazines slated for future companion collections.Library Journals This volume provides concise, in-depth histories of 106 of the most significant mass-market or general magazines in the United states--both active periodicals and those which have ceased publication. Included are magazines such asLife, Colliers,Playboy,People,Saturday Evening Post, andFamily Circle, as well as major tabloids, Sunday supplement magazines, regional magazines, and the most widely read publications devoted to specific audiences--Modern Maturity,Yankee,Mechanix Illustrated,American Farmer, and so on. Although the emphasis of the volume is the modern mass-market periodical, thirty-three titles have been included that either existed in their entirety in the nineteenth century or were established then. Generally, magazines with wide audience appeal and a circulation of over 100,000 were selected for inclusion. Taken together, these profiles offer the most comprehensive picture of American general interest magazine publishing available to date. The profiles are arranged alphabetically by magazine title and see references have been included in the case of title variations. In many instances, the history included here is the only source of information on the magazine covered. In other cases, large amounts of material that have been written over the years on a title have been consolidated and the history and accompanying bibliography provided here will serve as the definitive source on the magazine in question. Locations have been provided in cases that might prove problematic. An indispensable source for journalism students and researchers, this volume belongs on the reference shelves of every academic and large public library.

Marcus, Smith, and Leslie Nico. Part V The Effects of Assignment, The Persistence of Property Rights, and The Vindication of An Owner’s Rights, 27 Priorities and The Loss of Title. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198748434.003.0027.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines priorities and the loss of title. Even though the thing which an owner owns continues to exist, it is possible for that owner to lose his rights over that thing in circumstances other than where he has voluntarily disposed of his ownership. Obviously, if an owner voluntarily disposes of his interest in a thing, he loses his rights over the thing. Priority disputes concern the case where two rivals claim the same thing or where one person claims a right in a thing ranking more highly than another's claim in the same thing. Different questions arise where a subsidiary interest is created out of a larger set of rights. Where such subsidiary interests are created, and they conflict in the sense that two persons claim the same interest, the rival claims of the owners of these rights fall to be determined by the priority rules considered in this chapter.

Joyce, Donald Franklin. Black Book Publishers in the United States. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1991. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400619502.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the second decade of the nineteenth century, there have been black-owned book publishers in the United States, addressing the special concerns of black people in ways that other book publishers have not. This is the first work to treat extensively the individual publishing histories of these firms. Though largely ignored by historians, the story of these publishers, as documented in this study, reveals fascinating details of literary history, as well as previously unknown facts about the contribution of blacks to Western civilization. Donald Franklin Joyce offers comprehensive profiles of forty-six publishing companies, selected for inclusion through an examination of major bibliographic works, book advertisements, periodical literature, and business directories. Each profile contains information on the company's publishing history, books and other publications that were released, information sources about the firm, other titles issued, libraries holding titles produced by the publisher, and officers and addresses, where appropriate. Entries are arranged alphabetically by the publisher name, while an appendix presents a geographic listing of the firms and an index offers author, title, and subject access. This work will be an important resource for students, scholars, and researchers interested in cultural and intellectual black history, as well as public and academic libraries seeking specific information on individual publishing companies.

Leonard, Kathy. Bibliographic Guide to Chicana and Latina Narrative. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400618352.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of narrative work published by Chicana and Latina authors in the past 5 to 10 years. Nonetheless, there has been little attempt to catalog this material. This reference provides convenient access to all forms of narrative written by Chicana and Latina authors from the early 1940s through 2002. In doing so, it helps users locate these works and surveys the growth of this vast body of literature. The volume cites more than 2,750 short stories, novels, novel excerpts, and autobiographies written by some 600 Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Dominican American, and Nuyorican women authors. These citations are grouped in five indexes: an author/title index, title/author index, anthology index, novel index, and autobiography index. Short annotations are provided for the anthologies, novels, and autobiographies. Thus the user who knows the title of a work can discover the author, the other works the author has written, and the anthologies in which the author's shorter pieces have been reprinted, along with information about particular works.

Black, Brian C. Nature and the Environment in Twentieth-Century American Life. Greenwood, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400690099.

Full text
Abstract:
Americans during the twentieth-century became more disconnected from the environment and nature than ever before. More Americans lived in cities rather than on farms; they became ever more reliant on technology to interact with the world around them and with each other. Perhaps paradoxically, the twentieth-century also became the period in which environmental issues played an ever-increasing role in politics and public policy. Why is this so? Perhaps because, despite what many people believe, nature and the environment remains central to everyone's daily life. Pollution, environmental degradation, urban sprawl, loss of wildlife and biodiversity - all of these issues directly impact how everyone - even city dwellers - live their lives. Nature and the Environment in Twentieth-Century Americaaddresses a wide variety of the environmental issues that impacted the lives of people of all classes, races, and regions: ; The expansion of the National Park system and the increased desire for leisure time spent in the great outdoors ; The devastation of the Dust Bowl and its impetus toward conservation and a greater understanding of ecology ; Grassroots activism and environmental politics from Rachel Carson to Love Canal ; The impact of globalization and its environmental consequences on the daily lives of Americans Part of theDaily Life through Historyseries, this title joinsNature and the Environment in Nineteenth-Century Americain a new branch of the series-titles specifically looking at how science innovations impacted daily life.

Abstract:
This book examines the proprietary protection of the key forms of proprietary interests arising in commercial transactions. The focus is on the so-called lesser proprietary interests, interests which are less than absolute interests and are created in favour of suppliers of goods under a contract of sale with title-based interests and consensual security interests. The book considers tracing, the process of identifying an asset later in time in relation to an asset earlier in time. Chapters discuss the legal structure of proprietary interests, the ways in which those proprietary interests are lost, how new assets can derive from other assets, the default rules governing proprietary interests in derived assets outside contract and outside misapplication of assets, and the issues with contracts that provide for proprietary interests in derived assets. The book also analyses issues that arise from proprietary claims to derived assets where the originally held asset was misapplied.

Abstract:
As the Ottoman law of captivity expanded to include other sovereign states at the close of the eighteenth century, the rules also left out many of the Porte’s enemies. This chapter argues that rebels, pirates, and certain types of slaves trafficked into the Ottoman Empire remained unprotected by either the prisoner-of-war system, the Law of Release, or both. Ottoman subjects, or those who could claim no major empire’s subjecthood, had far fewer protections than those who were Russian, Austrian, Iranian, British, or French subjects. This distinction became systematic as the Ottoman state dealt with corsairs, and then rebellious Serbian and Greek populations. Throughout, slaves sold into the empire (such as Circassians and Africans) and some of those forcibly abducted (such as Georgians) also remained outside the prisoner-of-war system and the Law of Release.

This chapter focuses primarily on Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (1578), by John Lyly. Euphues is a work of prose fiction that offers to tell the story of a young man ‘of more wit than wealth, and yet of more wealth than wisdom’. In addition, the chapter flanks the discussion with works of fiction produced by two other figures. The first of these is George Gascoigne's Discourse of the Adventures Passed by Master F.J. (1573), which is one of the earliest examples of the urbane, courtly fiction that Lyly would make his own. The second is Robert Greene's Menaphon (1589), whose secondary title, ‘Camilla's Alarum to slumbering Euphues’, signals both an acknowledgement and rewriting of Lyly's fiction by his successors, which would move Elizabethan fiction in a direction that Lyly himself may never have attempted.

Abstract:
The repeating history thesis is a repeating topic of historiography. People who like this thesis usually begin with misquoted Edmund Burke as having said, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it”. Similar quote, “Those cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”, from George Santayana book The Life of Reason (1905-1906). The phrase has become so well-known and catchy that Rene Magritte used it for a title of his famous painting. Very similar saying has been attributed to Winston Churchill. Is history repeating remains a debatable issue. Nevertheless, such belief is widespread, and has a great impact upon political and other decisions. Is there a plausible connection between events in 1941 and 1991 in ex-Yugoslavia? Did the legacy of WWII somehow influence next war in the region? Do we live within the vicious circle of a single historical tragedy, at least in collective memory? Or such perspective is an essentialist simplification and self-justification? Does such an approach imply determinism and avoiding of the responsibility for each generation. Be as it may, Derrida introduced the term hauntology in which the past and its “ghosts” haunt the present, often in elusive and uncanny way. If 1941 and 1991 are not parts of the same tragedy, they could be part of the “omnibus” film tied by a single theme. This theme is double breakup of Yugoslavia. These studies are invitation for further discussion, rather than some final conclusion.

Abstract:
No other decade in the history of figure skating includes a longer list of World champions than the 1970s. Fifteen skaters, seven men and eight ladies, took those honors, with only two from each discipline repeating. Pair skating, however, was dominated almost completely by one skater, the incomparable Irina Rodnina, who with two partners won ten World Championships and three Olympic gold medals. In ice dancing, three couples won World titles, and one became the discipline's first Olympic gold medalists as well. This chapter profiles these exceptional skaters which include Ondrej Nepela (1951–89) of Czechoslovakia, Robin Cousins (b. 1957) of Britain, Toller Cranston (b. 1949) of Canada, Beatrix “Trixi” Schuba (b. 1951) of Austria, and Dorothy Hamill (b. 1956) of the United States.

Abstract:
This book tells the story of how a cadre of dedicated, iconoclastic scientists raised the awareness of a long-recognized preference for publishing positive, eye-catching, but irreproducible results to the status of a genuine scientific crisis. Most famously encapsulated in 2005 by John Ioannidis’s iconic title, “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False,” awareness of the seriousness of the crisis itself was in full bloom sometime around 2011–2012, when a veritable flood of supporting empirical and methodological work began appearing in the scientific literature detailing both the extent of the crisis and how it could be ameliorated. Perhaps most importantly were a number of mass replications of large sets of published psychology experiments (100 in all) by the Open Science Collaboration, preclinical cancer experiments (53) that a large pharmaceutical company considered sufficiently promising to pursue if the original results were reproducible, and 67 similarly promising studies upon which an even larger pharmaceutical company decided to replicate prior to initiating the expense and time-consuming developmental process. Shockingly, less than 50% of these 220 study results could be replicated, thereby providing unwelcomed evidence that John Ioannidis’s projections (and others performed both earlier and later) that more than half of published scientific results were false and could not be reproduced by other scientists. Fortunately, a plethora of practical, procedural behaviors accompanied these demonstrations and projects that were quite capable of greatly reducing the prevalence of future irreproducible results. Therefore the primary purpose of this book is use these impressive labors of hundreds of methodologically oriented scientists to provide guidance to practicing and aspiring scientists regarding how (a) to change the way in which science has historically been both conducted and reported in order to avoid producing false-positive, irreproducible results in their own work and, (b) ultimately, to change those institutional practices (primarily but not exclusively involving the traditional journal publishing process and the academic reward system) that have unwittingly contributed to the present crisis. For what is actually needed is nothing less than a change in the scientific culture itself to one that will prioritize conducting research correctly in order to get things right rather than simply to get published. Hopefully this book can make a small contribution to that end.

Abstract:
A 2023 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title This work assesses the possibilities and limitations of reducing poverty among families with children by increasing the work effort of the adults in those families. Following a historical review of family poverty since 1995, the authors present several policy simulations, including increased employment, a higher minimum wage, more generous tax credits, a child allowance, and reduced childcare or medical expenses. Specific policy proposals—including the proposals of the Biden Administration—are assessed using four criteria: reducing child poverty; equitable treatment of the poorest groups; promotion of self-sufficiency; and cost-effectiveness. The authors conclude that while no single policy is able to reduce family poverty by half while meeting the other criteria, several combinations of policies have the potential to do so.

Full text
Abstract:
The ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiovascular Care is the official textbook of the Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) of the ESC. This new updated edition continues to comprehensively approach all the different issues relating to intensive and acute cardiovascular care. It is addressed to all those involved in intensive and acute cardiac care, from cardiologists to emergency physicians and healthcare professionals. The chapters cover the various acute cardiovascular diseases that need high quality intensive treatment, but also organizational issues, cooperation among professionals, and interaction with other specialities in medicine. The largest section of the textbook is devoted to non-cardiac disease which could acutely involve the cardiovascular system. Other noteworthy chapters are on ethical issues important in acute cardiac care, such as patient safety, donor organ management and palliative care. A unique characteristic of the title is the presence of a whole section devoted to biomarkers, which underline the growing importance of laboratory medicine in the field of intensive and acute cardiac care.

Abstract:
Titles in the Core Text series take the reader straight to the heart of the subject, providing focused, concise, and reliable guides for students at all levels. This chapter discusses liability for torts committed by others. The defendant may be liable for torts committed by others in a number of situations. These situations include: where the defendant’s employee commits a tort; where the defendant was under a duty to prevent others committing torts; and where the defendant’s duty was non-delegable. Where a number of different people are responsible for the same damage, then as between themselves, the law may make a rough apportionment of blame. But each one of them is liable to the claimant for the whole of the loss.

Abstract:
Abstract This title explores the abundance and complexity of life on Earth, which—as we discover more of other planets—appears as a true oasis in the cosmos. Despite its diversity, life forms little more than a veneer on the planet, albeit one that has hugely influenced its climate and environment. Earth and its biosphere have profoundly changed through more than four billion years of time, undergoing a succession of transformations. Now, we are living through the latest of these, in which humans have become extraordinarily numerous at the expense of other living creatures, not least our kindred ape species that are in severe decline. A critical development is the technology upon which advanced human societies utterly depend, from which has emerged a technosphere that now rivals the biosphere in scale and power, and that is evolving with terrific speed. Among its unwanted side-effects are enormous and ongoing changes to the atmosphere, climate, land, and cycling of key elements for life. The biosphere is on the cusp of another transformation, and this book concludes by exploring ways in which we can influence this process for the better.

Oats, Lynne. Principles of International Taxation. 9th ed. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781526526199.

Full text
Abstract:
This title provides a clear introduction to international taxation and presents its material in a global context, explaining policy, legal issues and planning points central to taxation issues, primarily from the viewpoint of a multinational group of companies. It uses examples and diagrams throughout to aid the reader’s understanding and offers more in-depth material on many important areas of the subject. As well as practitioners who are less familiar with international taxation principles, this title is also used as a core text by many undergraduate and post graduate students studying business degrees. It is also widely used by those studying for the CIOT Advanced Diploma in International Taxation. Business is increasingly carried on a global scale and as such an understanding of how international taxation works is very useful for in house finance teams as well as their advisers. The 9th edition is again fully updated to cover important regulatory and legislative developments, including those in light of the ongoing OECD BEPS project implementation. Other key developments include: Progress towards a global minimum corporate tax rate to curb base erosion and tax competition (Pillar 2), eg OECD implementation framework and UK draft legislation New crypto asset reporting framework released by OECD. Ongoing impact of Covid-19 on international taxation Progress in relation to tackling tax evasion now that country by country reporting is bedding in. Further developments in European direct taxation including the debt-equity bias reduction allowance (DEBRA) and new Directive to prevent the misuse of shell entities. The updating is done by Lynne Oats, Professor of Taxation and Accounting, University of Exeter Business School, and formerly Deputy Director of the Tax Administration Research. She has managed this project since it's inception.

Full text
Abstract:
A new title in the Q&A Health Guides series, this book tackles readers’ questions regarding anxiety and panic attacks, dispelling misconceptions and examining real-world scenarios that highlight important concepts and controversies. How is social anxiety different from shyness or introversion? Are anxiety disorders only a problem in the Western, industrialized world, and if not, are they expressed differently in other cultures? Why do some people suffer from panic attacks while others do not? What kinds of therapy and medication are available for anxiety? What happens in therapy? How can well-meaning family and friends help a person with an anxiety disorder rather than make things worse? Anxiety and Panic Attacks: Your Questions Answered addresses all of these topics and much more, presenting information in a question-and-answer format that makes finding the desired information easy. The book begins with a “Guide to Health Literacy” section that explains what health literacy is and provides readers with tools to improve their health literacy, and then examines five myths and misconceptions about anxiety and supplies five case studies that provide real-world context and reinforce the concepts discussed in the book. All of the Greenwood Q&A Health Guides series books are specifically designed to provide readers with authoritative yet accessible answers to their questions in a concise, targeted resource that they can trust to be medically accurate.
