Full textThis thesis is devoted to studying the evolution of the place of female artists with Miao, Mongolian and Uygur origins in the Chinese artistic field 1950-2010. The central theme is to demonstrate how social changes have changed the place of women, and more specifically, how the place of women has been redefined in an identity discourse. If in the years 1960-1980, the art works dealing with the collectivist ideology and the representation of the ‘iron woman’ occupied a primordial place, in the years 1981-2000, the female artists describe the real situation of the women and put the focus on the question of the identity of modern women and the relations between women and men. They seek to master the different forms of ethnic artistic expression. Since 2001, in order to preserve ethnic cultures facing the globalization, the female artists are trying to interpret the depth of ethnic culture in their art works. It is towards traditions, such as historical memory, mythologies, songs and dances, that the female artists with ethnic minority origins are looking for their cultural roots. This research is based at the same time on the analysis of the socio-cultural situation of female artists with minority origins, the analysis of the construction of the feminine identity and the analysis of the particularities of the expression of female artists because of their ethnicity

Full textThis thesis is related to the field of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. Its nature is descriptive and qualitative and deals with code switching between Uyghur and Chinese. The study is based on a corpus made of ethnographic, linguistic and conversational data, gathered in the city of Ürümchi, capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in 2012 and 2013, through field observations and recording of spontaneous conversation. The analyses focus on the structural characteristics of code switching, on its pragmatic and sociocultural aspects, as well as on the ideological value of this language practice. Because of the complex nature of the phenomenon as well as the historical and political context of Xinjiang region, this study inserts Uyghur-Chinese code switching in an interdisciplinary dimension. Therefore, it takes into account different factors, micro- and macro- of political and social nature, within them language policies brought by the government, the diglossic relations between Uyghur and Chinese, Ürümchi urban characteristics and the ethnic relationships between Uyghurs and Han Chinese. The study aims at presenting Uyghur-Chinese code switching as a complex language practice, in which come into play structural features, cultural and social changes, as well as construction identity dynamics

Full textThis thesis focuses on the constitutive role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Uyghur diaspora. The sociological approach adopted in this thesis not only examines the aspects of politics and communication of this issue, but also allows a historical and geographical study which also takes into account the ideological, social, institutional and organizational points of view, as Uyghur communities abroad start to be visible and create formal organizations representing their cause. The first section of the thesis highlights, through ICT, a complex network of institutionalized Uyghur communities that interact with each other and their countries of origin, and demonstrates that the World Uyghur Congress is the most dominant of these associations. The second section shows, through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the mapping of the Uyghur web in 2010 and in 2016, the contributions and limitations of ICT in the diaspora construction process. This cross analysis sheds light in the third section on the forms of identities that are constructed, such as ethno-national, ethno-cultural or ethno-religious identity, and the social compromises tentatively formed through the negotiation process in virtual space and in the institutions. This study reveals the different purposes sought by both official and lambda actors and examines how new forms of regulation are likely to reach a new compromise between the actors. Presently, however, there is neither a common strategy, particularly vis-a-vis the political dealings with China, nor a common identity, but different identities of the Uyghur migration

Full textThis thesis focuses on the staging of Uyghur traditional art in its musical, chorographical and theatrical forms. For decades, large multidisciplinary performances depicted the Uyghur cultural heritages. Distended to share with their own, these performances are created by the artists of the community. Rearrangement, canonization, dramatizing (in Western style) are used to transform traditional art, to be more attractive on stage. This created an outstanding “bricolage” of all aspect of one culture, to be put in one space and in a limited time. These findings lead to questioning the ways of listening to music and watching dance in contemporary Uighur society. Equally, this phenomenon questions the role of art and culture in their everyday life. Furthermore, the impact of all these transformation on the sense of national identity is at the heart of our reflections. This thesis is interested in the origin of artistic professionalization established by the reform movements in the 1920s-30s, which played a role of educating and at the same time entertaining the population/poeple, and became a symbole of resistence in the region. Today, the stage represents an important aspect of uyghur society. After many years of fieldwork, analysing the discourse and different kinds of professional performances this thesis identifies the self- representation mechanisms of Uyghurs, as one nation, one ethnic group, to the outside world. It relies on historical sources, years of fieldwork in different regions of Xinjiang, includes different kinds of professional or amateur performances, and interviews of the actors and experts's discourse
