Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on Archbishop Alonso de Montúfar OP (ca. 1489-1572). It seeks to explore two decades of sixteenth century Mexican Church History mainly through the study of documents found in Spanish and Mexican archives. Born outside Granada in Southern Spain, just after the conquest from the Muslims, Alonso de Montúfar assumed teaching and leading positions within the Dominican order. After more than forty years as a friar, Montúfar was elected archbishop of Mexico and resided there from 1554 until his death eighteen years later. From the 1520s onwards, many missionaries went from Spain to Mexico in order to christianise the native inhabitants and to administer the church’s sacraments to them. Many of the missionaries were members of three mendicant orders: the Franciscans, the Dominicans, and the Augustinians. Alonso de Montúfar’s time as archbishop can be seen as a period of transition and a time that was filled with disputes on how the church in Mexico should be organised in the future. Montúfar wanted to strengthen the role of the bishops in the church organisation. He also wanted to improve the finances of the diocesan church and promote a large number of secular clerics to work in the Indian ministry. All this meant that he became involved in prolonged and very animated disputes with the friars, the members of the cathedral chapter, and the viceroy of Mexico. One chapter of this dissertation is devoted to a detailed study of Archbishop Montúfar’s role in the early cult of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tepeyac, which today has become of the most important Marian devotions in the world.

Abstract:
This story cycle focuses on the members of the Ordoñez family of Castroville, California from the time of the first generation’s migration from Mexico in the 1950s to the most recent generation who moves out of the town in the 2000s. “The Ordoñez Pride” shows the entire family as they experience a miracle. Cecilia, the matriarch, receives a belated wedding ring that bursts into flame that doesn’t burn her, but everything else it comes into contact with. The flame also magically sparks hers and her husband’s sex life into overdrive and, late in life, they produce three more children, for a total of nine. Following this framing story, we see snapshots of all the other family members at life-changing moments. In “After the Revolution” we see Ray Ordoñez , the family patriarch, grow from a boy into a man, as he defends his sister from what he perceives to be the American ranch owner practicing the right to first night—a custom that was still practiced in rural Mexico in the twentieth century. Eventually, Ray migrates to California and begins his family, becomes assimilated into American culture, and reluctantly welcomes an American boy—his oldest daughter’s boyfriend—into his household.

Sumpter, Guy. "Lady Chapels and the manifestation of devotion to Our Lady in medieval England." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31073.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of Lady Chapels and devotion to Our Lady in medieval churches is vast. This thesis investigates whether liturgical Marian observances required a particular setting or not, and the forms it might take. This is achieved by a careful selection of material that highlights the evolutionary development of the most influential physical manifestations of the cult of the Virgin and some of the more humble ones. Accordingly, attention has been focussed on three main areas that form the principal components of this study, Chapter one investigates the development and gradual inclusion of specifically Marian commemorations in the liturgical calendars that sustained the cult and fed its growth. Chapter two comprises case studies of Lady Chapels and other manifestations of the Marian cult in major churches. Each has been chosen to provide evidence of chronological and geographical diversity in terms of its respective contribution to the holistic picture, and /or because it has attracted little previous notice. In addition, the cumulative examination of the available material has permitted a degree of fresh and original insight. The third chapter focuses on the county of Northamptonshire in order to examine Lady Chapels and the cult of Mary in the context of the parish, in order to establish as accurately as possible the incidences of specifically Marian chapels and the degree to which devotion and the manner of its observance was manifest. The justifications for such a study are firstly, that it was at parish level that most people would have experienced and participated in any such observance, and secondly, that no countywide survey has previously been attempted. The conclusion draws the evidence together and argues that the veneration of Our Lady could take place in a variety of settings that reflected the diversity of Her cult.

Wellesley, Mary. "John Lydgate's 'Life of Our Lady' : form and transmission." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10054615/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the form and transmission of John Lydgate’s Life of Our Lady. The Life survives in over fifty manuscripts that date from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. It was also printed several times in the pre-modern period. The thesis examines the ways in which the text was presented in these various forms and shows what such forms suggest about the transmission of the poem. It discusses the manuscripts’ physical construction, design and decoration. It taxonomizes the types of textual apparatus that accompany the text and considers textual extraction and modification. These aspects of the manuscripts show how the poem’s meaning was framed in a variety of cultural contexts and demonstrate the role played by nonauthorial figures in shaping the Life for its readers. All the located manuscripts are described in an appendix at the end.

Rabinovitch, Shelley TSivia. ""Our lady of the garbage dump": Nichitos as public and private sacred space." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/8962.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is based on the examination of artifacts, specifically a series of artifacts known in Spanish as nichitos (little niches), found, among other places, in the Catholic Spanish speaking areas of Tucson, Arizona. Similar objects or constructions are also found in the Catholic Italian speaking communities of New York State and Missouri, and in the Catholic French Canadian communities of Quebec and Ontario, as well as in French speaking Louisiana. Nichito-like artifacts found in other cities, regions, and countries are included for the sake of comparison. The study of these artifacts is approached from an anthropological perspective, including ethnography, supplemented by folklore studies and informed by the multi-disciplinary context of religious studies. The research progresses through several phases. A classification of nichitos and nichito-like artifacts allows for definitions and contextualization of the artifacts themselves. Terms in Tucson Spanish are used for clarification and to establish a lexical norm for classification, as this community appears to have the most specialized collection of terms. An analysis of the context of the nichitos identifies the iconographical components of the artifacts. Religious and social aspects of nichito use are examined in the barrios of the Tucson area, leading to questions concerning religiosidad populare (popular religion) and the links or conflicts between domesticity and official religion.

Abstract:
Nineteenth-century periodical literature, recognised today as a distinctive and significant feature of Victorian public communication, is voluminous. Yet in order to argue that the editor-publisher Elizabeth Hayes made a significant contribution to evangelising journalism, this thesis finds it imperative to situate her work within the enormous outpourings of the Victorian periodical press. For a Victorian woman to succeed in journalism was impressive and this investigation argues that Hayes capably led an international journal of religious ideas to stability and longevity. The investigation will show that Hayes, foundress of an organisation which edited, published and distributed a Franciscan monthly journal - to date scarcely investigated- was prepared prior to 1872 for her subsequent journalistic mission. The argument that Hayes made a significant contribution to nineteenth-century Catholic journalism appears strongest when evidence of the immense power of the press for good and evil is provided. This is accomplished hopefully though an examination of both secular and religious periodical literature and in particular by situating Hayes’ output within this milieu. The argument is further strengthened through a detailed examination of the actual contents of Hayes’ Annals of Our Lady of the Angels, of the numerous contributions to her Annals and of the editing, publishing and distribution methods which she employed in her mission. The argument shows Hayes’ publication to be a significant contribution in the literary field to a growing body of research on late nineteenth-century professional women who enriched society with religious periodicals. The thesis argues that Hayes provided matter of interest to general readers and presented the progress and development of the Franciscan Order. The journal’s range of themes adds weight to the growing body of evidence of how women’s topics varied in the Victorian religious periodical press. It is argued that Hayes’ diffusion of good literature was an authentic medium of evangelisation over twenty-one years. As writer, editor, publisher, manager of printing and distribution, it is argued that Hayes was a significant contributor to the Apostolate of the Press and that she used her journal as a tool of both adult education and entertainment. Sheffield, Katelyn McKenzie. "Zofia Stryjeńska: Women in the Warsaw Town Square. Our Lady, Peasant Mother, Pagan Goddess." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3723.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I consider the unique position that Polish artist Zofia Stryjeńska (1891-1974) occupied during the interwar period. Lauded during her time as the most popular artist in Poland, the acceptance of Stryjeńska's female voice in representing a national vocabulary was unprecedented and deserves closer examination. I assert that Poland's history of oppression created a unique environment where women as archetypal figures often took on masculine roles. These 'transgressive types' were visible in the literature and art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Stryjeńska's art, as well as her behavior, capitalized on these transgressive traditions. Women played an important role as visual and ideological figures within the national mythologies of Poland, and while these mythologies situated women as authorities in protecting, cultivating, and renewing the land, and by extension the nation, few women actually achieved the status of shaping them. Zofia Stryjeńska was an example of one who did. At the age of twenty-one Zofia cut her hair, dressed as her brother, and, as a boy, enrolled in the academy of fine art in Munich. This act found precedence in the years of Polish imagery and it ultimately allowed her to create a space for herself and her art. This thesis pays particular attention to Stryjeńska's part in the 1928 renovation of the Warsaw town square. Like many other artists at this time, she worked in many mediums and employed folk-art motifs and styles in the quest to create a truly "Polish" style. Stryjeńska's art drew on national images of Polish women as the Virgin Mary, the good Polish Mother, and Pagan Goddess. Idealized tropes, such as these, often represented a disconnect between everyday social norms and the greater ideals of a national identity. Zofia Stryjeńska embodied this juxtaposition. Her art drew on national images of Polish women filled with blurred gender boundaries. These images, prominent for centuries, at once empowered Polish women while also being relegated safely to the abstract realm of legend and myth. These female ideals, therefore, served as less of a threat to the rigid gender expectations that were a part of everyday Polish life. Zofia Stryjeńska was an example of a woman who laid claim to the female ideals of Polish culture. She used myth to define her behavior; her studies in Munich, and by doing so launched her life into the realm of myth, creating a sensationalized image more legend than reality.

Granados, Salinas Rosario. "Fervent Faith. Devotion, Aesthetics, and Society in the Cult of Our Lady of Remedios (Mexico, 1520-1811)." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10398.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the cult of Our Lady of Remedios from an art-historical perspective. Choosing this specific cult statue as a case study is not arbitrary: Remedios is among the oldest Marian images in the New World and was named first patroness of Mexico City in 1574, when the city council became the patron of her shrine and a confraternity was founded to better disseminate the cult. As a result, the statue was carried fifty-seven times through the streets of New Spain's capital in three hundred years (an average of one procession every five years), thus outnumbering any other religious event that was not part of the liturgical calendar. The fame of Our Lady of Remedios was closely linked to her role as Socia Belli of the Spanish army, as she was believed to have protected Hernán Cortés and his allies during the conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlán in 1520-21. Her character as protector in times of war was enhanced in the centuries to come, when she was called to the city on every occasion when the Spanish Crown was involved in military campaigns. Her protection, however, was mainly requested in times of drought and epidemics, a reason for which her fame as protectress of the city grew intensively, and all sectors of society (Spanish, Indians, and Castas) followed her with the same fervent faith. This dissertation is a monographic study of a miraculous image that has hitherto been overlooked in the history of colonial religiosity of New Spain despite its symbolic relevance for the society of its time. It considers the sixteenth-century statue and the ways it was displayed to its devotional audiences as documents that inform us about its social role. By placing this cult image in the ritual context to which it belonged, both spatial and spiritual, this study considers the devotional gaze with which her devotees engaged her showing how devotion, aesthetics and politics were intertwined during colonial Mexico.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis in creative writing comprises a novella — Order of Our Lady Cicada — and an exegesis which maps representations of metamorphoses, tricksters and insects through seven stories. The creative writing component is a literary artefact and a piece of research in itself. The exegesis is a further construction of new knowledge, addressing the novella among six other literary texts. The two pieces — novella and exegesis — are imbricated and both draw on theories from post-humanism, including New Materialisms and critical animal studies. Overall, this thesis problematises both representation and liberal humanism, seeking a corporeal relation with insects, tricksters and metamorphoses in the texts without settling on easy meaning-making. I have formed the two components of the dissertation by engaging methodologies of rhizomatic research, phenomenological research, “agnostic” research, voice-hearing and ficto-criticism.

Abstract:

This interdisciplinary thesis begins with a 1981 birthday gift of art, music, photography, and words presented to the citizenry of Los Angeles for their bicentennial titled The City of Our Lady Queen of the Angels. The installation was created by Anthony Duquette and Angelino artisans and depicted a court of giant Archangels presided over by their queen, the patron angel of the city. The installation was accompanied by a poem written for Los Angeles by Ray Bradbury, set to music by Garth Hudson, and preserved through photography by James Chen. I reconstruct the fragments of Bradbury's poem and prepare them as spell for transportation as a Los Angeles specific ritual performance. I document and then use the installation and poem as the inspiration for my own reinterpretation of the 1981 work through music, words and choreography titled A Dance in the Green Garden of the Queen of the Angels. My oral interpretation of the poem defines its structure, and composer David Johnson creates a score for the work, which I perform and record with instrumental quartet. I choreograph, cast, and costume the resulting Queen of the Angels Sonata as a ritual dance, and the piece is performed at CSULA’s International Day of Dance Concert, 2016. I then create a film production team to digitally record and edit the entire dance concert as a feature length film, and its seven individual dances as short film excerpts, that are distributed globally on YouTube.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation explores the Black Madonna as the archetypal center of the American cultural complex around homophobia. The dissertation is designed to: (a) present an approach to Jungian concepts informed by complexity theory and transdisciplinarity; (b) integrate the unconscious in research, by honoring the feminine archetype in theory and methodology; (c) extend analytical psychology to the collective level through an exploration of archetype and the evolution of consciousness and culture; (d) detail the American cultural complex around homophobia; and (e) engage the religious function through the production of a meaningful, hermeneutic exploration of consciousness and cultural transformation.

The research question guiding this dissertation is as follows: through the irruptions of the American cultural complex around homophobia, how has the dominant culture’s unconscious, collective projection of the Black Madonna, symbolically embodied by gay men, constellated the transcendent function, supporting the emergence of an integral structure of consciousness and a partnership model of culture?

Several theoretical perspectives (Jungian and post-Jungian thought, complexity theory, Gebser’s structures of consciousness, Eisler’s Cultural Transformation theory, and Singer’s theory of the cultural complex) provide an integrated framework. The research is guided by a melding of approaches and methods, including transdisciplinarity, hermeneutics, and amplification.

The dark feminine archetype has been symbolically embodied by gay men throughout the course of the American struggle for gay rights. As the dominant culture is better able to relate to gay men, it may likewise better relate to the dark feminine archetype, imagined herein as the Black Madonna. Incremental shifts in homophobic attitudes seem to emerge through this relation to the Other and are indicative of evolved consciousness. Ongoing retraction of homophobic attitudes may help to move the culture towards an integral structure of consciousness and partnership model of culture, the unfolding of the Black Madonna archetype.

Coming closer to home, Rob Pascoe (1979) has developed a taxonomy of Australian historiographers in his ,study, The Manufacture of Australian History. This thesis is constructed around what Pascoe calls contextual historiography. He explains contextual historiography using Sir Keith Hancock's work as an example to say that Hancock rejects the search for laws of history is to begin to define his characteristic mode of social theorizing. Hancock rejects the notion that reality can be explained by constructing rules of social structure and change which will apply across time and space and instead professes that events, persons and ideas can best be understood by locating them within their actual period and place. (p.5) This study itself is an invitation to any interested person or group to develop their knowledge of the period, geographical area or the event through the publication of oral histories. It invites others to add to their knowledge, either by expanding it or giving them the opportunity to develop different perspectives or added nuances to their current understanding and interpretation through the incorporation of new information into their thinking. In the dynamic which is history some of these people may put additional material on the public record for the inspection and possible adoption of others, including the present writer. This study is by no means meant to be prescriptive, categorical or didactic. Postmodern theory and analysis precludes this.;Rather, it is to be seen as a bridging study which has come from almost nothing due to the destruction of records by fire or the failure to collect and maintain records pertaining to school life during that time. It is to be seen as tentative because there is always the possibility that diaries or other memoranda will be unearthed as people shift house or as deceased estates are distributed. Other researchers may compile oral histories from people who have not been interviewed in this study. While it may be seen from the transcripts that the interviews compiled for this study present a consistent story with few, if any, contradictions between them, it is always possible that interviews with other people may present a different picture.

Abstract:
In a time of rapid social change pilgrimages are resurfacing as significant and visible social phenomena. Australia has historically been noted as a very secular society but in recent years there has been some scholarly attention to forms of spirituality outside of the orthodox, Church religion. In matters of national identity and commitment to place it is argued that there could be an upsurge in spirituality, in contrast to the decline of those practising formal religion. In this dissertation it is argued that two journeys undertaken by contemporary Australians can be considered true pilgrimages with spiritual dimensions and are therefore part of a growing spirituality apart from formal Church. A survey of the theological and anthropological literature about pilgrimages allowed the development of an eight-point frame of criteria that could be used as a standard against which an assessment of contemporary journeys could be made. Pilgrimage is a non-local physical journey to a historically and or mythically significant site or shrine that embodies the centre of a person’s most valued ideals. These ideals may or may not be theistic but must be portrayed within the limits of the culture. The shrine casts an image of the culture and has an expert shrine custodian, but has the capacity to absorb a multiplicity of discourses. Pilgrims go to a shrine to experience the place of past events, take home spiritual traces and to model a changed or improved future. In order to apply this frame to two Australian journeys, field trips were made to the plaster image of Mary at Our Lady of Yankalilla Church in South Australia and to Gallipoli in Turkey around the Anzac Day commemorations in 2000. Participant observations and interviews with six key informants, when considered in association with the historical context and media reports, provided ‘thick description’ of the behaviour at the journey destinations and insight into participants’ experiences, motives and understandings. Both journeys, the sacred and ostensibly secular, satisfied the frame of criteria for a pilgrimage. Furthermore they may also exemplify some features that are distinctively Australian, in that in these pilgrimages spontaneity and egalitarianism jostled against bureaucratic structures and national hierarchies.

This study aims to analyze a set of photographs collected from the collections of families who are residents in the northern region in the city of Londrina, in Paraná; which theme refers to poses depicted at the “Santuário Nacional de Aparecida” in the city of São Paulo (National Sanctuary of Aparecida) between the years of 1940 and 1980. The analysis presented in this research is divided into two stages that complete each other in their closure: in the first stage the research turns to the collection and field search, the cataloging process, orientation and thematic selection from the persistence of the theme as something outside the everyday routine, however, permanent to the collection as a religious tradition of these family groups. In the second stage of the research establishes the development of producing relationships in regards of “Fotografias de Aparecida” (Photografs from Aparecida). Bounded by a historical approach that aims to examine both the networks and the individuals responsible for the construction, and maintenance of the photographic look over the faith space at the Sanctuary of Aparecida in the city of São Paulo. The research is highlighted in its temporality from the concept of photographs as souvenir merchandise or votive economically exploited by itinerant photographers in devotees travelers landmark concentrations, specifically the poses produced at “Praça Nossa Senhora Aparecida” (Our Lady of Aparecida Square). Therefore, we propose a time frame encompassing the golden periods from this practice between the 1940s and the 1980s. Thus, the search turns to compose through the analysis of interviews with Square photographers, owners of images and photographs, and a network which produces memory of the sacred space in this popular religious imagery.

The main concern of this study was to understand the persistence and transformation of the devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida. Therefore, it was important not only to understand its symbolic, economic and social, dimensions as well as to understand their interfaces. Therefore, we sought to explain the origins, settlement and emancipation of the municipality, the emergence and expansion of the devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida, up to receiving the title of Patron of Brazil, disputes over power, legitimacy and ownership of the devotion by the Church and the government; the use of religious tourism in the development of the city, its economic dimension and centralization of resources, the symbolic dimension of she devotion and of the Church discourse against devotional Catholicism and the role of the devotee, tourist and pilgrim. The study was involved a review of literature and primary sources in the archives of the natural shame memo sand Documentation Center, field research, direct observation and recorded interviews with the regional tourism officials, Catholic leaders involved with tourism and devotees living in the city. The results showed the transformation of traditional forms of devotion from the segmentation of the market of tourist activities, a process that is a new synthesis of contemporary social practices. We conclude that there is a strong relationship in Aparecida between tourism and religion, the Church seeing was the institution that officiated the devotion to Our Lady and in the final years of the nineteenth century developed actions known as Romanization expanding its symbolic, economic and social power

Abstract:
Religious tourism, a steadily growing phenomenon throughout the 20th century, was incentivated especially during the first half of the century by the Catholic Church which, using it as a strategy of afirmation, organized a european movement that mobilized, and still mobilizes, millions of participants. The pilgrims of the so called “Peregrinações Alentejanas”, even when recruited by local bishopries, integrated a larger entourage willing to follow the travel plan previously established by the religious hierarchy. These pilgrimages convey a good example of the religious tourism expansion as seen in the multitudinary influx of peoples in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, in France, favouring an experience of transnationality and european interknowledge besides the natural geographical mobility.

Abstract:
In 1890, in Brazil, the powers of the State and Church are separated. The Romanization process made official a change of attitude of Catholicism in the face of the problems that had arisen during the Old Republic, in which it sought to broaden its pretensions of influence over society. Among the ambitions to be achieved are: the importation of European Religious Orders and Congregations (Salesians), the installation of a new devotional configuration in the mold of Roman Catholicism; the propagation of a network of private education institutions to form elites. In Sergipe, we analyze the unfolding of the process of Romanization before the establishment and development of the Salesian Congregation, through educational practices and the diffusion of the Devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians. In the Brazilian territory, devotion to Our Lady Help of Christians is widespread and devoted in its basic regions, cities and states. Based in the field of Cultural History, with an emphasis on History and Religion, this research aims to make an analytical study from the History and Salesian Memory, between 1902 and 1958, including the private and family devotional system, and how it was established in the social and history of sergipanos. Understanding this way, the role of Salesian Education, strategic form of diffusion of the process of romanization. The research deals with the concepts of religious experience as an object in the field of history (CERTAU, 1996), representation (CHARTIER, 1990) and symbolic power / religious field (BOURDIEU, 2004). Methodologically, the work consists of the analysis of sources on the presence of the Catholic Church in Sergipe in diverse institutions and places of memory.

This paper seeks to analyze the processes of interaction between faithful and church, specifically in social networking largest Catholic procession of Latin America: The Candle of Our Lady of Nazareth, held every second Sunday of October in the capital of Pará, Belém do Pará. The networking of the Candle, specifically Facebook, are still recents strategies used by the church to evangelize, digital media on calls originating web 2.0 and Cyberculture, in a society in the process of mediatization. In these new communication platforms, religion begins to change their ways of communicating. And the faithful? These are replaced and relevant central role in this new scenario. In this analysis, are discussed changes that begin to emerge in the discourse and practice of the Catholic Church provided by the insertion of the church in the digital world as well as the tensions encountered along this route between saying and doing the religious institution. Are perceived, yet, the differences found in the opinions of the priests themselves, regarding the use, purpose and other details regarding evangelization in the digital medium. As a case study, we analyze the speeches of Internet digital media in the Candle of Nazareth, seeing if there is a change in the mode of being and doing religion and a new way of being religious that is emerging in social networking Internet, with the increasing mediatization of society.

Abstract:
This study has assumed that all social practice is symbolic, therefore, an educational practice. Its focus of analysis is Nossa Senhora do Rosário\'s reign (Our Lady Rosario\'s reign) - also known as \"Congado\" (folk and religious dance), in Belo Horizonte/MG - that is a demonstration that privilege some groups of people in this city. This demonstration is typical of Afro-Brazilian people and it is very popular and important in the State of Minas Gerais, not only in the capital as well in other cities of the State. Its origin is based on the mythical narrative concerning the Saint Rosario and represents the conception of the Saint\'s devout. It means that Nossa Senhora do Rosário\'s devout (the sons of rosary) define not only their beliefs as well their modus vivendi through that narrative. This study calls in questions some considerations such as: Which images are present in the myth of Nossa Senhora do Rosário? How do these images consist the modus vivendi for all those people who follow Maria\'s rosary? How do these images become real or concrete in the devout\'s minds? How do the educational processes happen in the construction of this conception? Then, this study mainly aims to analyze the mythical images of that reign, investigating the modulations occurred in the conception, the myth and the celebration related to their educational processes. For that, the paradigm of complexity was chosen as an epistemological basis and inside it, the theories involving imaginary anthropology, profound psychology and the celebration. Besides, this study was based on preliminary studies of several authors, such as: Edgar Morin, Joseph Campbell, Gaston Bachelard, Gilbert Durand, Jean Duvignaud, Eerich Neumann and Edward Whitmong. These theoretical references allowed to analyze the archetype of Grande-Mãe (Our Great Lady) and its influence in the \"congadeiros\" (conga dancers)\' life. Then, the proposed objectives for this study were successful. The found results are expected to contribute to the knowledge about afro-descendant communities, enlarging our comprehension about society and education and even about ourselves.

The purpose of this research was to study the Nossa Senhora da Glória College and its influence in the creation of teacher training courses, as well as in the establishment of normal and parish schools in Francisco Beltrão-Pr and region, contributing to the schooling process in the municipality in years from 1951 to 1982. Faced with this objective, the problem arose: In what situation was education in Francisco Beltrão at that time? Have school nuns, in partnership with municipal, state or federal agencies, built more schools in the region? The objective of the research was to understand the contribution of the school nuns of Nossa Senhora from the Glória College in the process of schooling in the municipality and the region during her career, articulated to the economic, political, religious and social issues of the period. The beginning of the cut was 1951 because it was the year of the first contact with the region and has agreed to build a house and College in Francisco Beltrão. The final cut was 1982 because it represents an autonomy and identity of the Gloria College. The idea was to recover part of this history that began in the region of Bavaria - Germany and continued in Brazil from 1937, starting in the interior of São Paulo and reaching Francisco Beltrão in 1951. We adopted as support the dialectical method to be able to understand the historical process of schooling in the municipality. In order to answer the problematized questions, we investigated the educational legislation, bibliographic sources, chronicles, documents, photographs, newspapers and magazines, as well as oral testimonies and interviews, among others. The bibliography and the set of sources made possible the understanding of the history of the institution, placing it in a more comprehensive context. The result of the study was that nuns made an important contribution to municipal and regional education. When they arrived here, they installed the Nossa Senhora da Glória Institute in makeshift rooms. Then they opened the first kindergarten in the municipality. Soon after, they built the Nossa Senhora da Glória College in CANGO, in partnership with the Federal and State Governments and with the help of the community. They encouraged the installation of two Normal Schools. One of them worked for the training of regent teachers. The other trained teachers to work in primary education. Glória College also functioned as an epicenter, contributing directly to the installation of three parochial schools in the region.

We analyze the rosaryan devotion in the City of Goiás from the Memorial of Memory, written between 1881 and 1930, by Anna Joaquina Marques. During the colonization of Brazil, the devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary gained importance near the enslaved Africans, becoming one of the biggest catholic devotions, in number of loyal ones and in quantity of churches erected to this devotion. Nevertheless, the catholic reform (Ultramountainism) provoked the resign of devotion of rosary. In the last decades of the century XIX, in the backwoods of Central Brazil, the Dominican mission, associated to the administrations of the bishops of the diocese Sant'Anna of Goiás, Cláudio José Ponce de Leão and Eduardo Duarte Silva, the traditional and from the backwoods religiosity was reformed. New devotions were stimulated, others criticized and banished. So, the Catholic Church acted straightly in religious practice of the population, subjecting to his administration the churches administered you them brotherhoods and the principal religious celebrations. We observe the consequences of the ultramontane reforms in religious daily practices of the vilaboenses choosing like key of analysis to devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary of the Blacks, at the level of the experiences of the subjects, through the scripture of Anna Joaquina Marques

The metropolitan constitution has significant impact on the religious life of its inhabitants. Starting from this statement, this work has as object the intersection between the metropolitan context and the parish religious experience having as locus of their study the parish Nossa Senhora da Conceição, at Tatuapé neighborhood in São Paulo. This research interprets the conditions of the metropolitan individual: their individuality, relationship with the institutions and their moral, describing the history and transformations of parish structures and analyzes the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição as a place where city and parish organization are mixed. Through field research, which followed a group of catechesis of adults in the same parish, it was found that religion metropolis context can only be understood against the background of a hybrid society. In response to the variety of metropolitan individuals, religion assumes characteristic of service, seeking to meet the most varied audiences, which hybridize in the parish environment

With the purpose of scrutinizing the specifics of some of the religious parties, elected as the locus of this research, two festivals: the Holy Spirit and Our Lady of the Rosary on Monte do Carmo and Natividade; towns from the gold cycle, in the eighteenth century and belonging to former northern Goias, current state of Tocantins. Studies on religious parties and has been increasingly developed in the historiography. Thus, this research aims to highlight the everyday experiences of popular religious devotion held annually in both cities. Such events are expressed through a diverse set of rituals pertaining to the cycle of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and Holy Ghost. Also intends to show that such demonstrations represent and reinforce the ritualistic social systems and hierarchical, and a joint incorporation of both elements of modernity and traditional. The research encourages the reader to reflect as parties transplanted from Europe and Afrique to colonial Brazil can be perpetuated until the present time, becoming an important event in local communities, allowing the strengthening of family ties and contributing to the construction and reconstruction of identities local and regional. To support the construction and reconstruction of scientific study enrolled to documentary sources of public and private archives, documents, manuscripts of brotherhood, official letters, journals, oral testimony. As a source of bibliographic support, we use texts from various scholars dealing with the issue in Brazil, Goiás and Tocantins. By doing a comparative analysis it was observed that although the historical origin of the festivities of the Holy Spirit is the same, the paths taken by two different cities experiencing the ritualistic practices, although similar. Many of the existing elements in the celebrations of the Holy Spirit of Monte do Carmo not exist in the Natividade and vice versa. However, it is interesting how an "invented tradition" by a white elite in the colonial period, aiming to provide, among other things, the conversion of the Negroes to Catholicism, can be reinterpreted and reformulated later by a community, going to represent the identity of community.

In this monograph, we intend to study the devotion to Our Lady Aparecida and their interactions with Brazilian politics, as Church s key moments in the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. The study of essays, articles and works focused on Brazilian politics and history of the Church in Brazil have been essential to this research as the study of documents found in the "Clock Tower" of the Basilica of Our Lady Aparecida. We understand that at the end of the research, politics and religion could hold a very strong popular devotion in the Brazilian South Region. Certainly, we realize that these three forces could together build what is now the patron saint of Brazil, the Virgin Our Lady of Aparecida
