Abstract:
On the surface, Out of the Silent Planet appears to be C.S. Lewis' first halting exploration into the realm of ‘the space-and-time story’. However, there is a deeper and more significant experiment involved; Out of the Silent Planet is Lewis' first attempt at a philosophical narrative exploring a specific theme, a technique which he will later incorporate into his most famous works, the Chronicles of Narnia. In Out of the Silent Planet, Lewis is examining the tri-part Platonic soul as he presents it in The Abolition of Man, using the three species of Mars as representations of each aspect. Thi

Abstract:
Context. Detecting exoplanets in clusters of different ages is a powerful tool for understanding a number of open questions, such as how the occurrence rate of planets depends on stellar metallicity, on mass, or on stellar environment. Aims. We present the first results of our HARPS long-term radial velocity (RV) survey which aims to discover exoplanets around intermediate-mass (between ~2 and 6 M⊙) evolved stars in open clusters. Methods. We selected 826 bona fide HARPS observations of 114 giants from an initial list of 29 open clusters and computed the half-peak to peak variability of the HA

Abstract:
The paper analyses selected philosophical aspects of Stanisław Lem’s Solaris. I argue that there is an interesting similarity between the history of “Solarist studies” –the fictional scientific discipline depicted by Lem and cognitive science. I show that both disciplines go through similar stages as they try to describe their main subject (the planet Solaris and human consciousness respectively). In the further part of the paper, I focus on two problems identified in cognitive science that can be directly related to the themes found in Solaris: the problem of the detection of intelligence and

AbstractWithin the next five years, a number of direct-imaging planet search instruments, like the VLT SPHERE instrument, will be coming online. To successfully carry out their programs, these instruments will rely heavily on a-priori information on planet composition, atmosphere, and evolution. Transiting planet surveys, while covering a different semi-major axis regime, have the potential to provide critical foundations for these next-generation surveys. For example, improved information on planetary evolutionary tracks may significantly impact the insights that can be drawn from direct-imag
