Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work is focused on the development of tools for quantum state engineering of non-classical state of light. Three different directions are studied, which when combined, lead to efficient and versatile protocols towards the generation of quantum states. Those states are produced by taking advantage of both descriptions of the light: the discrete and continuous variables of the light. The first direction consists in the réalisation of arbitrary superpositions of zero and two-photon Fock states with two indistinguishable single-photon states. This protocol permits, among others, to create superpositions of coherent states called Schrödinger cat states. An iteration of the protocol could allow the growth of the amplitude of the state. To realize such iteration, we increase the production rate of our basic resource, namely, the single photon. To do so, we implement two synchronous cavities allowing the increase of the peak power of the laser pulses, which ultimately enhanced the non-linear effect at the origin of the photon creation. The last direction aims to solve the problems related to the probabilistic nature of the photon creation. In order to store and extract the single photons on demand, a quantum memory is implemented. The storage of single and two-photon states has been experimentally realized. This setup could allow in the near future, by synchronizing the state stored in the cavity with the income of another photon, to create a cat state inside the cavity itself

Abstract:
The title of our thesis is Complex Systems, CAD tools and Nanotechnologies. It concerns the study of the techniques allowing to configure a circuit containing a very high number of very simple elements and inter-connected in a very complex network, in order to emulate natural or artificial complex systems. In this context we propose a platform of CAD tools which helps the implementation and the simulation of this type of systems. Initially, we implemented a first tool of this platform allowing to experiment by simulation the laws which govern the evolution of the target system. This simulation allows to validate or alter these laws before the implementation in the nanonetwork. Then, we use this tool to experiment on various complex systems, such as artificial ecosystems and systems of particles in which a relativistic space time geometry emerges, as a consequence of the type of laws of interactions of the particles

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Perceived as a complex adaptive system, public space could be examined through the means of complexity. In this thesis, we discuss the case of an urban park, Horch Beirut, aiming to showcase the contributions of the complexity approach to urban studies, both epistemological and methodological ones. Horsh Beirut makes up to 70% of green spaces in Beirut, but has been mostly closed to the public since the end of the Lebanese civil war in 1990. Surrounded by three culturally heterogeneous neighborhoods, the triangular park embodies both urban multiplicity and exclusion. The complexity approach not only offers a transdiciplinary scientific lexicon but also interdisciplinary modeling tools. To showcase these tools, we apply Systemic Triangulation for the urban diagnosis of Horch Beirut. This tool acknowledges the inscription of complex problems in structural, functional and dynamic continuums, establishing the relationships between them, and projecting interactions between the system and its environment. We also propose the Soft Systems Methodology tool for an interactive governance based on non-linear representations of urban reality. The complexity approach has provided us some new insights. First, addressing cities, and urban entities like Horsh Beirut, as complex systems could diverge our perception of fragmented linear solutions towards adaptive evolutionary processes. Secondly, chaos is not to be feared. In fact, by being on the edge of chaos complex systems adapt and co-evolve, consequently creativity is catalyzed and change emerges. Finally, and most importantly, a public space should not be designed, but encouraged to emerge. It would be better to induce its self-organization than to try to control it. Thus, a change of attitude is necessary: the role of urban actors, architects and urban planners, should be reoriented towards seeking the underlying dynamics of an urban system, establishing its emerging properties, and subsequently, determining and inducing its synergistic opportunities

Abstract:
AbstractIt is often assumed that a requirement for counting objects is that they do not overlap. However, this condition can be violated. The paper deals, specifically, with counting objects that consist of parts, that is, with configurations. One example is outfit as a configuration of articles of clothing; notice that one article of clothing may be part of different outfits. The article develops an analysis of such configurational entities as individual concepts. It investigates the interaction of noun phrases based on such nouns with modal operators and in collective and cumulative interpretations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The connection between column and deck-box on a semi-submersible platform is often subjected to high stress concentrations that can be governing for the structural strength. One common design used to withstand the high stresses is a cast integral in high tensile material, which is both heavy and expensive to manufacture, which is why an alternative cut-out design is investigated. This study presents an analysis of a node connection with regard to yield stresses, buckling, fatigue damage, weight and cost in order to propose an alternative cut-out design using the same criteria. The cast integral, which is analysed as a reference case and used for comparison of designs, is of a typical design used today. A parametric study shows that the use of a cut-out design may be advantageous in the centre bulkhead connection between the column and the deck-box. The adjacent geometry is of simple character and the cut-out does not affect the overall structural design. The cut-out is found to be a feasible alternative to the cast integral, with yield stresses and fatigue damage in the same range. Further refinements of the cut-out design could, however, decrease both yield stresses and fatigue damage. A suggested cut-out solution leads to a decrease of 4.5% in weight for a reference structure. For the same reference structure the production cost is estimated to decrease by 9%, hence, the cut-out design is recommended for the centre bulkhead connection.

Abstract:
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) material is often drilled when constructing a large aircraft structure. When drilling CFRP, many defects can be left on the CFRP hole surface. One of the most detrimental surface defects is known as fiber pull-outs, which occur when bundles of fibers are pulled away by fiber-matrix de-bonding and matrix stripping. The objective of this research is to use confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) in order to characterize fiber pull-outs occurred during the drilling process of quasi-isotropic CFRP. This new optical characterization method is capable of measuring maximum depth and the distributions of fiber pull-outs. Fiber pull-outs are also qualitatively characterized by SEM and CLSM. It is found that the average depth of fiber pull-outs acquired from CLSM is approximately two times larger than those from the surface profilometer. However, there is a proportional correlation of the data between CLSM and surface profilometer.

Abstract:
Gas leakage between E-11 and E-15 std cc He/s can be measured by a helium accumulation method. The leak detector uses a quadrupole mass spectrometer with a minimum detectable partial pressure of 5E-15 torr. The mass spectrometer is attached to a small ultrahigh vacuum chamber constructed of stainless steel treated for a low hydrogen outgas rate of 2E-15 torr·liter/cm2·s. The chamber has a nozzle to which a test object can be attached. The chamber is also equipped with a non-evaporable getter (NEG) pump that pumps active gases but not noble gases such as helium. The purpose of the NEG and the ultra-low hydrogen outgas feature of the chamber is to maintain low background pressure and high sensitivity of the quadrupole during helium accumulation. Helium tracer gas coming through a defective seal or material is accumulated in this chamber for a few minutes, and the rate of rise of the helium signal is compared with that of a calibrated reference leak. In this manner, leakage down to 1E-15 std cc He/s can be measured with a good confidence factor.

Abstract:
Abstract Completions operations, especially in modern day extended laterals, presents challenges related to tripping to total depth, applying weight down and pull up, and rotating. As dozens of stages in laterals exceeding 10,000 ft stepout have become frequent, numerous technologies have risen to assist with pushing the envelope for reliable completions operations in these long laterals. This paper examines a combination of three technologies that are more commonly being applied when drilling out frac plugs in long horizontals in the USA: hydraulic completion units, torque and drag software, and data acquisition systems. Coiled tubing units (CTU) have historically been used to drill out frac plugs in shorter horizontal shale wells for the last two decades, and where coil has mechanical limitations, Hydraulic Completion Units (HCU) have taken over drilling out frac plugs in the longer laterals of >10,000 ft. As the limits of drilling out frac plugs have been tested for HCUs, accurate real time data has enabled the crews to make the most of their equipment to reliably complete wells with longer and longer lateral sections. Torque and drag software modeling is a tool commonly used to predict axial force and torsional values during completions that result in the available hook load and the rotary torque requirements. The largest unknown in the planning phase is the appropriate friction factor to use for the upcoming well, with accurate friction factor prediction therefore the key to accurate prejob analysis. As of 2019 remote telemetry data acquisition systems (DAS) have been used on the HCUs, which has allowed key performance indicators (KPIs) to be automatically calculated. The program provides live feed to the service company and operator so that real time changes can be made if necessary. In addition to tracking KPIs in real time to provide the field crew positive or negative feedback, friction factors can be matched to predictive torque plots to identify trends prior to problems arising. Post-job analysis is needed to produce accurate predictive friction factors for future offset wells. The two main components to a successful post-job analysis are a software model that correctly represents the prior wellbore operations and accurate field data to compare with that model. Unfortunately, the software models in use are commonly limited by necessary assumptions with input data, such as rotary speed and tripping speed, and field data collected for comparison is often rudimentary. Experienced field personnel using engineering best practices can make use of current tools in combination to overcome the limitations commonly inhibiting accurate performance planning and predictive modeling. The inclusion of the DAS present on the HCU has greatly enhanced the accuracy and amount of rig data gathered, which can then be used in conjunction with operational procedures and torque and drag software to accurately plan and execute completions operations in the wellbore. Using data acquisition software, a constant stream of data was collected in one-second intervals in over two dozen wells. This system has the ability to measure both rotary speed and rotary torque, which are critical parameters when drilling out frac plugs. By removing these assumptions in the post-job analysis over a number of wells, a range of friction factors have been established for the Appalachian Basin in the Utica and Marcellus plays. The authors will present field data from two wells as representative case studies, along with the range of predictive friction factors established from 13 wells for the particular completions operations evaluated in the Permian and Appalachia plays. It is the goal of the authors to disseminate technical information on the methodology and practice of modeling wells post-job, calibrating friction factors, and establishing predictive ranges for successful use in future projects.

Abstract:
The Fatigue Design Assessment (FDA) procedure is a part of ShipRight design, construction and lifetime ship care procedures developed by Lloyds Register. The work presented in this paper is on the application of a Stress Concentration Factor (SCF) approach to the FDA procedure to develop an effective and user friendly tool for the assessment of fatigue performance of cut-outs in transverse web frames for longitudinal stiffeners. Investigation of hull damage statistics has identified that fatigue cracking in way of cut-outs and end brackets of longitudinal stiffeners affects a reasonable proportion of ships in service. This can become an ongoing ‘through life’ maintenance issue as defects can re-occur if the design of the structural detail has insufficient fatigue performance. A spectral fatigue assessment of this structural detail has traditionally been based on localised mesh refinement applied to a global finite element (FE) model and hydrodynamic calculated using first principle methods. These traditional methods are time, resource and labour intensive processes and therefore limited in its application. The SCF approach developed offers a faster and simpler method for the determination of hotspot stresses for standardised cut-out details.
