In the dominant mode of art discourse the apparatus features as a blind spot. It is most often treated as an indexical trace of the image, as a readable text or conversely an unreadable formal gesture. This practice-led research draws on conceptions of the apparatus developed in the philosophy of science and technology. In doing so, it offers a new approach to understanding the apparatus in practice by foregrounding the material presence of technologies, their 'performative agency' and the perceptual dimensions of spectatorship.

This thesis redresses the lack of scholarly attention paid to painted circus banners produced in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century by exploring the extent to which American folk art painting scholarship, methodologies, and objects can be used to articulate the meaning and significance of banner painting. Jag kommer att använda mig av tre målningar från boken och via dem analysera Jungs process i arbetet och hur de speglar hans liv under denna period. Min frågeställning är om skapandet av den Röda Boken även innebar en spontan bildterapi för Jung. This thesis explores the insider/outsider dynamic experienced by individuals as they enter diverse social situations. The shift from insider to outsider is evoked through an art installation of 18 sculptures drawing influence from "goth" subculture, as the viewer enters and interacts with the art space.
