Abstract:
My thesis is a description of the issues encountered during the process of research and construction of the objects leading to, and consisting of, the work shown in Outside Things. The work is my attempt to gain personal insight into the complicated relationship between nature and culture. Through abstract furniture objects, floral patterns, and robots I explore the relationship between actual landscape and the constructed man-made bio-mimicry that convolutes the definition of Nature.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain student and teacher perceptions of the environment in which student learning takes place and their perceptions of how it has helped them in the cognitive and social domains. Data collected were through student and teacher perception surveys, student and teacher perception questionnaires, classroom observations, student focus group discussions, and teacher interviews. Themes that emerged from the data sources were student interactions, students' autonomy in personalizing their learning space, teacher perceptions of comfort in the classroom, and student perceptions of comfort in the classroom. The findings of this study point to four recommendations for educational leaders to ensure the effective implementation of new and dynamic learning spaces: (1) consult and support teacher and students, (2) provide professional development, (3) visit campuses and other learning spaces, and (4) add color. In order for real change to take place, teachers need to enquire about and embrace student preferences and allow for the discomfort that will be present when trying something new. Teachers must be willing to relinquish control of the learning experience for the student in order to allow for possibilities in personalized learning on the part of the student. They must risk initial failure in order to allow for greater successes in the long run.

Foá, Maryclare. "Sounding out : performance drawing in response to the outside environment." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2011. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/5455/.

Full text
Abstract:
My enquiry focuses on how a drawing, when made in response to the outside environment, might be conditioned by that environment, and in turn how that environment might be influenced by that drawing. Examination of texts by, among others, Bachelard, Merleau-Ponty and Baudelaire have contributed towards understanding ideas about humankind’s physical memory of landscape, phenomenological experience in relation to the outside space, and ideas concerning the interaction between the practitioner and the outside space. Four key issues related to drawing are explored in this research (each is the subject of a chapter in the thesis). Firstly, the practitioner’s stance in the process of drawing is examined, in particular the practitioner’s gesture, which mimics the form of the subject, and performs the subject into being. The practitioner’s position is addressed in relation to how the gaze of the other fashions that position into a performance. Secondly, ‘movement’ is identified as a crucial material component of the process of performance drawing. Movement’s capacity to energise the work, stimulate engagement with the subject, and promote the continual development of ideas is also investigated. Thirdly, a number of interpretations of the outside environment established by individuals who work in different professions are examined. These different readings of place identify ‘signs’ as conditioning the character of place, and as being read by passers-by as directions through place, thereby revealing an interaction between place and humankind. Fourthly, while exploring how to performance draw in direct response to place, the methodology is developed through three stages. The traditional mark-making onto paper was found to keep a distance between the practitioner (observer) and the subject (the environment). The mark-making transferred onto the outside environment was found to retain a distance, held by the tool, between the subject and practitioner. And the practitioner by using her body and voice was found to bridge the space between subject and self. The drawing with sound methodology was found to map, signal, and measure place in direct relation to practitioner, while also revealing an interactive conditioning between place and practitioner, through sonic reflection and resonance. Critical analysis and documentation of findings concerning the practical work are interspersed throughout the written text, and a DVD of audiovisual documentation of practical works is also included as an attachment to the written thesis.

Vlach, Philip Thomas. "Measurement, prediction and analysis of the radio frequency electromagnetic environment outside and inside hospitals." Thesis, McGill University, 1994. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=26436.

Full text
Abstract:
The electromagnetic environment outside and inside five urban hospitals, due to fixed, EXTERNAL TRANSMTTERS (30-1000 MHz range), was characterized by measurement. Measured fields generally remained below 130 dB$ mu$V/m (3 V/m). Four computational prediction methods, based on line-of-site free-space propagation, Uniform Geometric Theory of Diffraction, and urban clutter models, were evolved. Fields predicted outside these hospitals were compared to the measured fields. A simple line-of-sight method predicted fields within 20 dB of those measured, thereby easily providing an estimate of the worst-case fields at a hospital. The most complex of these prediction methods estimated field levels to within 10 dB.<br>Measurements were also used to analyze signal propagation characteristics inside buildings due to INTERNAL SOURCES operating at 433, 861, and 1705 MHz. Cross-floor propagation paths, where multiple floors and walls were traversed, showed fields were independent of the transmitter-receiver separation distance. Signals measured for a separation of one floor were higher than same-floor signal levels.

Bradford, Linda M. "The Viability of Virtual Worlds in Higher Education: Can Creativity Thrive Outside the Traditional Classroom Environment?" BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3239.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of the growing popularity of virtual worlds for gaming, recreation, and education, few studies have explored the efficacy of 3D immersive virtual worlds in post-secondary instruction; even fewer discuss the ability of virtual worlds to help young adults develop creative thinking. This study investigated the effect of virtual world education on creative thought for university level students. Over the course of two semesters, a total of 97 university students participated in this study. Forty-six of these participants (experimental group) spent time in a specially designed virtual world environment, the V.I.E.W., while 51 of the participants (control group) met exclusively in a real-world classroom. Creative thought was measured before and after the intervention with the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking Verbal Forms A and B. Although the experimental group's ending scores did not reach the level of the control group's scores, results showed overall statistically significant gains for the experimental group at p = .033. The experimental group also achieved greater gains in the subcategories of fluency and flexibility, with significance at p = .036 and p = .043, respectively. At the end of the course, independent raters measured the creativity expressed in student art critiques, using a scale developed for this study. No overall significant differences between groups were found in the art critiques, except in the category of spatial awareness, where the experimental group's scores were significantly higher than the control group's scores at p = .039. For both instruments, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate statistical data. Results suggest that immersive worlds can be at least as well suited as traditional university classrooms for developing creative thought—particularly in the context of art education. Implications for researchers, students, educators, and administrators are discussed.

Abstract:
Despite the tremendous achievement in economic development over the past four decades since independence, Malaysia is facing a problem of environmental degradation at a rapid pace. In searching for Malaysian approach to alter this trend, this thesis is written against a background of concern for a balanced development in economy and social wellbeing and simultaneously preserving the environment. The aim of the study is to identify an alternative approach in managing the local environment for health, starting from a value position of regard for local knowledge and abilities, and for scientists and administrators working together with local knowledge and abilities, and for scientists and administrators working together with local communities in their natural settings. Findings from this study offer a range of lessons for those who wish to integrate local and scientific knowledge. The research approach proved capable of documenting the separate realities of the place-based and the knowledge-based communities within a common interpretative framework. The place-based communities held realistic interpretations of their capacity to contribute to local sustainable development, distinct from one another and also distinct from the same events as perceived by the scientific community. The conclusion is drawn that each needs the other for any effective local application of scientific findings or government support. Finally, this has not been a study of top-down or bottom up but from the 'inside-out' with a small study of the 'outside-in.' It offers another perspective and an extra set of tools or strategies for the professionals' community to work with local communities in their environmental management for health. The desired outcome would be for the local communities to contribute as a full partner to the dominant scientific studies in designing local management strategies.<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Saucedo, Morales Julio Cesar. "The morphology, environment and interstellar medium of early-type galaxies as a means for studying the evolution of galaxies outside of clusters." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289190.

Full text
Abstract:
The main goal of this thesis is to study the properties of isolated early-type galaxies with the hope of learning about their formation and evolution. With this goal in mind, B and I optical, and Ks near infrared images of 4 different samples of early-type galaxies in contrasting galactic density environments have been secured with the Steward Observatory 90 inch and 61 inch telescopes. The 4 early-type galaxy samples consist of: a sample extracted from the Catalog of Isolated Galaxies of Karachentseva, a sample of isolated galaxies previously studied by Fasano and Bonoli, a sample of galaxies from the Hickson Compact Groups Catalog, and a sample of galaxies with detected ISM's. This data set is used to examine whether differences in the galactic environment are related to differences in key properties of early-type galaxies. Multi-color surface photometry analysis is performed on the 4 samples, and the results are used in several contexts. For most of the galaxies in the Karachentseva sample surface photometry is reported for the first time. Likewise, Ks data for most of the objects in this thesis have never been reported. The light profile of the galaxies are fitted with Sersic profile functions. In agreement with other investigations, it is found that the Sersic parameter, n is primarily dependent on the galaxy size, and does not seem to be strongly dependent on properties such as environment or ISM content. The (B - I) color index, ellipticity, position angle, and third and fourth-order Fourier coefficients are derived from the surface photometry. It is confirmed that the third-order coefficients signal the presence of dust, and that the coefficient of the cos(4θ) gives structural information of the galaxies. Furthermore, the subtraction of model ellipticals has revealed peculiarities in the morphology, such as disks, spiral arms, dust lanes, multiple nuclei, etc. The largest and most relevant sample in this investigation consists of 39 galaxies, and it contains ∼25% of the galaxies classified as ellipticals in the Karachentseva catalog. Only approximately one half of the galaxies classified as ellipticals in that catalog appear to be correctly classified, a result which may imply a reduction of the percentage of ellipticals in the Karachentseva catalog to ∼6% of the total population of Isolated Galaxies. A significant number of merger candidates has also been found among the isolated galaxies. It is argued that the fraction of merger candidates to isolated ellipticals can be used to constrain models for the evolution of compact groups into isolated galaxies. The results of CO(1-0) millimetric wavelength observations taken at the NRAO 12 M telescope, as well as submillimeter continuum emission from dust at the SMT are also presented.

Då skapas det lätt dynamik mellan platserna och en dynamisk miljö inbjuder till nya upptäckter och utmaningar.</p><br><p>Different media for example TV and newspapers report that children become more and more immobile. Since children's play and movement are very important for their development and wellbeing, it is important that the preschool outside environment can tempt, inspire and challenge the children to play and movement. In what ways can the outside environment do this? What can be done to improve the outdoor environment of a preschool? I have searched the answers to these questions by interviewing children and teachers at two different preschools. The results show that there should be elements of nature and a variety of places with different characteristics in a yard. Then dynamic between places can easily be created and a dynamic environment invites to new discoveries and challenges.</p>

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the role of side openings in museums, in relation to users’ visiting experience. The research particularly focuses on the feature of view, analysing if the connection with the outsideenvironment provided through windows, results in an enriched museum’s experience and enhancedcultural identity. The analysis is based on the case study of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, wherethree rooms with stronger, moderate and weaker connection with the outside environment have beenevaluated through visitors’ surveys. Results show that the public revealed considerable awarenessabout windows and their landscape and yet the view was rarely considered a distracting feature. Theavailable literature on daylight in museums hardly includes view among the acknowledged daylightbenefits, and, also due to the difficulty in controlling the daylight intake, side openings have gained abad reputation in the museum field. However, as in the analysed case study, the view was consideredby many as an enriching part of the visiting experience, this thesis calls for further research on therole of view in exhibition rooms and on how to include it properly in museums’ design.

Abstract:
In the middle of 20th Century, there was a significant change in the development of housing in Sweden. The change came to be called the Million house programme, where one million new and modernized houses and residential areas were erected over a ten-year period. Many of these residential areas are perceived as insecure, run down and several are today segregated. The purpose of this study is by development of a million house programme external environment affect segregation, with reference to the quality of the residential area. The goal is to study how the external spaces in a million house programme area can affect segregation through the development and ensuring of the outdoor environment values. The purpose and goal is achieved through literature studies, field studies and interviews. The results from the applied methods notes that the areas are worn, unkempt and scanty. Suggestions are also presented for action. In conclusion, the importance of careful management, zoning and foreclosure in the million house programme areas external spaces have an impact on segregation. However, the affects of segregation and integration depends also on other societal aspects and measures that should all be considered in the planned change of a segregated area.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate how inside and outside directors differ in their cognition and reasoning in regards to environmental sustainability issues. The theoretical background derives from a cognitive view and Stakeholder theory. The paper is further based on current research regarding insiders’ and outsiders’ relationship to environmental sustainability. In order to capture the cognition and reasoning of insiders and outsiders, a Think-aloud study was conducted, interviewing a total of 20 board members in the food industry. Results from this study showed that, when faced with environmental issues, outsiders are more likely to request, repeat, ponder as well as clarify the information given. Secondly, outsiders are more likely to consider a long-term perspective. Thirdly, outsiders are more likely to consider an environmental view. Lastly, both insiders and outsiders use analogical reasoning when contemplating around environmental issues. However, insiders are more likely to draw experience from their current position or company while outsiders are more likely to draw experience from outside their current position or company when solving environmental issues.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of the present research was to assess the environmental impacts of the provision of potable water supplies and sanitation projects, both during the construction and operation phases. The research was related to rural areas of developing countries. Field research was undertaken in the rural areas of the Northwest and Central regions of Iran. Data were obtained by observations and survey from the field, and a comprehensive questionnaire and literature review. Interviews were carried out by the author in households, particularly women, in four villages with a piped water supply and sanitation facilities, and four villages without such facilities, in the two different regions. To assess the beneficial and negative impacts stemming from the projects, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) techniques were used. After the application of EIA through the use of checklist of impacts and the Leopold's matrix, results demonstrated that the implementation of water supply and sanitation projects can have several negative impacts on the natural environment, and positive beneficial impacts on the social and economic environment. In relation to water supply and sanitation projects, the most effective EIA method was shown by this study to be the Leopold's matrix. It can identify both positive and negative impacts and the interaction between the project activities and environmental parameters. The most important recommendations that stem from this research are, that project planners and water engineers should employ EIA methods in planning water projects, particularly in the rural areas of developing countries.

Abstract:
Advances in Virtual reality have brought opportunities for cinematic content to the users by allowing them to look around freely in any arbitrary direction and to interact as they please. This, however, imposes difficulties to the content creators as the freedom given to the audience results in less control over the user. The lack of control over what the audience is paying attention to could cause them to miss out on important points of interests and content creators can no longer rely on previous methods to draw and direct their attention. This study aims to find different means in how to direct and draw the attention of participants inside a 3-dimensional virtual environment without disrupting the virtual experience. This is achieved by comparing five different approaches in the virtual environment to navigate the participants. These approaches are Flicker, Dim, Auditory feedback, Haptic feedback and Tilt. A total of 15 participants participated in this study and were, post simulation, given a questionnaire to evaluate which approach was the least obvious, confusing and disturbing. One approach, flicker, had the best outcome in terms of guiding the participants in the virtual environment but was perceived to be the most disturbing one as well.

Abstract:
Previous research has shown that the existence of after school program is beneficial for children's health and their academic performance. Lorensborgsskolan, an elementary school situated in Malmö, implemented a project called “From movement in school to being active in organized sports” where they started a school sport organization. The project seeks to increase the amount of children active in external sport organizations and to make the transition more accessible. The project collaborated with Hemmaplan which is an initiative from the Scanian Basketball Federation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to discuss the prerequisites for implementing Lorensborgsskolans project “From movement in school to being active in organized sports” from a sustainable perspective. The sustainable perspective contains three concepts: social, environmental and economical. Three research questions has been formulated. How was the preparation of this project in relation to sustainability? What challenges can be identified when implementing this project? What benefits can be identified when implementing this project?Interviews, observation and document analysis were the methods used in this research and the data was analyzed through a six step coding process. The result and analysis were divided in three paragraphs named after the research questions connected to the theory. The research findings indicate how this project would give the children a protective factor outside of school. According to the collected result the children should be given the access to pursue sport in the entire city of Malmö and to work on their social skills. In conclusion, an external analysis should have been done before the implementation of the project. The financial aspect is identified as a challenge. For the children to be a part of the school’s sport organization is free of charge in contrast with external sport organizations where this does not imply.

Abstract:
More and more research studies are being conducted on the quality of architectural space as a factor affecting our mental, social and physical health. In the past, this topic was often overlooked in its complexity. The establishment of the specialized fields of building biology, biophilic architecture and the works of Christopher Alexander and Nikos Salingaros now allow us to consider various facets of this subject. This dissertation aims to analyse the topic of vitality in architectural space by studying the abilities and perceptions of its users. Therefore its aim is not to develop a new theory of “vitality-enhancing architectural space”, but to describe how this phenomenon is perceived by the users themselves. Users can provide feedback on which features of architectural space they see as the most important for the feeling of vitality. These features have been hierarchically organized based on their perceived importance, analysed and described in detail to allow their relatively easy application in practice. This dissertation will also allow a comparison with other existing works on the studied topic.

Abstract:
This paper examines peri-urban space existing separate from the urban fabric and often in between urban and rural landscapes. This is a largely neglected area and often considered by each side as belonging to the other. Contemporary studies identify two sides associated with the rural-urban fringe: the expanding built settlements and ebbing countryside, ignoring significance and the circumstance of the spaces. The peri-urban fringe is a planning opportunity, which provides services beyond simple human habitat or wasteland of undesirable function. Through this study I intend to present the peri-urban interface as an intricate element of the urban infrastructure. This paper examines a series of case studies, which display peri-urban land-use planning and design through established areas, boundaries, and buffers spanning North America, Western Europe and Australia. Each area is examined to determine scope, program, and ecological and social impacts. The data informs positive and negative impacts within the peri-urban area. The peri-urban fringe spaces take on many forms and functions. Successful sites enrich the associated urban communities, whereas unsuccessful sites, which often exist in conflict with abutting environments, reduce quality of life and essential ecological processes. The peri-urban interface varies with many scales and circumstances, which affect quality of life for the urban population. Planning in the PUI is essential in promoting healthy populations and ecologies. Scale, program and accessibility determine how effectiveness of a peri-urban interface. Through this study, I want to identify significant value of the peri-urban interface as an opportunity and asset for the urban landscape.<br>Master of Landscape Architecture

Abstract:
Salvation-themed art environments are a roadside rarity, built out of a strong visionary dedication to God, but the sites are disappearing simply because the work is misunderstood. The historiography on the subject is sparse, trending more toward coffee table books with big glossy pictures than real scholarly endeavors, but the consensus among all has been clear. The sites are a valuable part of the recent American cultural landscape, crossing several scholarly fields - art, architecture, and history - and uniting them into a cohesive preservation movement. On a series of trips to visit, see, and experience five of these sites, I began to understand the massive scale that each site required to assemble and exactly what it would take to restore and preserve each site. The preservation goal is not small, but it is not unattainable. There are federal grants, nonprofit groups and localized support committees from which to gather support so that the site may continue to be a piece of history.

Abstract:
Since 1950, the plastic production has increased radically from 1.5 to 280 million tons in 2012. The increased production of plastic has led to oceans becoming more polluted than ever. Micro plastic particles originate from large floating plastic debris by undergoing degradation caused by UV-radiation. Due to their small size, density and colour micro plastic particles resemble marine organisms’ natural prey and are therefore ingested. This report discuss the hypotheses that there are micro plastic particles present in oceans outside of the Costa Rican west coast (hypothesis 1), that the location between the South and North Pacific gyres will result in an accumulation of plastic (hypothesis 2) and that different sampling methods will generate different types of data which makes it difficult to compare results (hypothesis 3). A manta trawl was used to collect samples in size range 1-2mm and they were quantified with a microscope. To simplifying transportation and storing, aluminum foil was used instead of glass jars to collect samples. Thereby the need of transferring material from a glass jar to a flat surface for quantifying with microscope was eliminated. One area contained 56.5 % of all gathered particles together. The result also showed that micro plastic particles are present even in protected areas.

AbstractOutdoor education is a concept of the idea where you teach matters. This study asks the question of what significance outdoor education has for learning in natural science and how motivation influence the learning of the students. For young students in natural science it is important that they have the possibility to vary their environmental setting to be able to get firsthand and authentic experiences of life, nature, society and culture in its natural place, so that they can use that in their early education. A variety of how the students learn should mix between literal- and sense-based learning. Several of the studies that we have researched shows the same thing, outdoor education has an impact on the knowledge and skillset within natural science for the students. Yet it is rarely used to the extent that maybe it should within education. It does however not stop there; outside education also motivates students to learn both in the outside and inside settings.

Abstract:
Background: There are personal factors and environmental factors playing impacts on the participation of children with developmental disabilities in China. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the participation of children with developmental disabilities in outside home activities compared to typically developing children. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional method was used in this study. Participants were children with developmental disabilities (autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities) and typically developing children between the age of 5 to 13. An instrument called ‘Picture My Participation’ (Simplified Chinese version) was used for data collection. Results: In general, typically developing children attended more frequently and felt more involved than children with developmental disabilities in outside home activities. There were many similarities in attendance between the two groups of children. They both attended more frequently in formal learning at school, shopping and playing with others, and less frequently in spiritual activities, social activities, and trips. Some differences were found in the activities with lower levels of involvement. Apart from the spiritual activity with the lowest mean score of involvement in both groups, typically developing children felt less involved in organized leisure and trips. However, children with developmental disabilities had lower levels of involvement in health center visits and social activities. There was no significant association between age, gender, place of residence, and participation in neither the attendance nor involvement aspect. Conclusion: Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors play essential parts in the participation of children with developmental disabilities. More support should be provided to children with DD.

Abstract:
The dual aim of this thesis is to analyze the individual and collective activity of teachers, parents, pupil support workers and children when dealing with school assignments and to envisage the conditions for the transformation of this practice. This study draws on the "course-of-action" research program and involved a) using video recordings and self-confrontation sessions to analyze the activity of the participants in two case studies pertaining to school assignment situations; one case study was conducted in the classroom and during extracurricular activities the other in the classroom and at home; b) designing a training environment for teachers, parents and support workers based on video artifacts which were created using data collected at the outset; c) implementing this training environment by confronting the participants with the video artifacts and analyzing their activity. The results we examined refer to the empirical and the technological aspects of the research. As far as the empirical aspect is concerned, the results show that despite the spatial and temporal separation of the situations, collective dimensions to the school assignment activity could be identified relating to the circulation of the children and the technical devices. The latter acted as “interfaces” making it possible to articulate the activity of the adults. This has enabled us to demonstrate: a) the existence of a culture shared by teachers, parents and pupil support workers which partially explains the durability of the practice of school assignments; b) cultural elements specific to each category of actors; c) certain asymmetries given that the teacher’s activity has a much greater influence on the collective action than the activity of the other adults; d) difficulties experienced by parents and pupil support workers when supervising the children’s work; e) a strong influence of the technical devices on the dynamics of the collective action. In light of these observations, we consider that the situations contributed very little to enhancing the children’s learning potential. The technological aspect involved identifying the training environment’s potential for helping the actors to appropriate the collective dimensions of their activity and to envisage other situations which would be more conducive to learning. To do this, their activity was analyzed during a confrontation with the episode of the video artifact referring to a temporal and spatial setting that, in practice, they did not usually have access to. The results highlight cognitive processes indicating that the participants had become more aware of the collective dimensions of the activity. At the same time, it emerged that the training environment had a limited potential for inciting these same actors to imagine new actions. These results, analyzed in relation to the specificities of the artifacts, the use made of them and the culture of the actors have opened up new perspectives for the transformation of the training environment

Abstract:
碩士<br>東吳大學<br>經濟學系<br>104<br>Housing price is affected by itself inner and outside environment characteristics. Reviewing past related researches, it is difficult to obtain the deal housing price. Thus most researches focused on the pre-sale house market, especially in the city area of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. A few of researches discussed about the housing price factors within the scope of county and city in Taiwan. Since the Luxury Tax had been implemented on June 1st, 2011, and it caused the housing transition amount reducing and housing price raising in the following 3 years. However, the housing price fluctuation differed from regions in Taiwan. It is obvious that the housing price is affected by not only house inner characteristics but also the urbanization and personnel structure of regions in Taiwan. The outside environment characteristics might be the main factor of causing housing price and transition change at regions. This study adopted the panel method to explore the relationship between region factors and housing price. This study used the personnel purchasing contract housing price in every county and city in Taiwan from 2012 to 2014, and the database was offered by Joint Credit Information Center. The method of this study was using linear relationship model to discuss the effects of house inner characteristics (e.g. building types, floor space, garage, and building age)on housing price. The results of this study indicated that there is relationship between house inner characteristics and housing prince changes. The degree of the relationship between house inner characteristics and housing price differs from different periods of time. The real difference of housing price change in every county and city from 0 to 10000 NT dollars per 36 square fee. The relationship between house inner characteristics and housing prince is weak. The outside environment characteristics might be considered as the factors of housing price changes. The housing price was used as the independent variable and the unemployed rate, divorce rate, the amount of medic facilities, the proportion of the population over 65-year-old, young age population dependency ratio, and the rate of population growth were used as the variables in this study. This study tried to explore the relationship between the outside environment characteristics and the housing price by panel data analysis. The results of the study indicated that there is negative relationship between unemployed rate, the proportion of the population over 65-year-old and housing price, but the positive relationship between divorce rate, the amount of medic facilities, young age population dependency ratio and the rate of population growth.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>建築系建築與都市設計碩士班<br>106<br>Solar radiation works its physics on building envelope, bringing effect to indoor and outdoor thermal comfort. Thermal isolation coating are a special paint that isolates heat, its materials are light, thin and can block heat and albedo, preventing radiation from entering any structure. This research experiments on this type of paint, and in addition sees how it performs in subtropical areas during summer time when sunlight exposes the most radiation on building envelope. We separate our research into two stages, (1) is the physical measurements and simulations on materials and (2) simulate experiment target in subtropical environment during summer season and record its performance. During the first stage we will compare the heat flux of heat transfer difference of before and after applying target paint to cement wall; the computer will then evaluate the statistics of before and after applying to see the benefit assessment of indoor and outdoor thermal comfort. Experiment result shows: I. The heat transfer that passes the cement wall is decreased to more than 16 W/m^2 compared to traditional paint, and indicates that the key to heat isolation is based on the infrared spectrum. II. The paint isolation works more efficient when applied to the south and west side. The surface temperature isn’t enough to show the energy change, so it is important to view the change by heat energy data. III. Through simulation experiments, we come with the conclusion that the more heat energy it can reflect, the less energy the wall will take in, in result less heat transfer will enter indoor environment, lowering the heat. At the same time due to the relatively low temperature, the wall will take in heat from the surrounding air flow, thus the temperature of the surrounding will fall, resulting to lower outdoor temperature.

Chang, Yi-Ling, and 張翊玲. "The comparison of macrobenthic communities structure and sediment environment outside in two different nuclear power plant." Thesis, 2019. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/scbakr.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>海洋生物研究所<br>107<br>Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to compare the nearshore macrobenthic communities off the first nuclear power plant to the fourth nuclear power plant in Taiwan from 2005 to 2012. It is to determine if the different sedimentary environment of the two plants is due mainly to the operation of the power plants, thus resulted in different microbenthic communities. The nuclear plant# 1 locates on a relatively open sea. Thus, under the impact of coastal currents, the the sediment environment among inlet, outlet and the background stations were similar and have similar trend of changes. The size of the sediment changes from gravel to fine sand. The distribution of sand particles becomes more uniform, and the organic matter is decreased due to the spreading of organic matter offshore. In terms of biological aspects, due to the significant changes in sediments, the habitat and decrease in organic matter, thespecies richness, density, abundance, and dominance of the three stations were all reduced. The high mobility and environmentally tolerant amphipods and nematodes (Chromadora nudicapitata), Idunella chilkensis, have become the dominant species in this nuclear plant. The northward flow is around the forth nuclear plant, resulted in the sediment distribution in the outlet and the background station becomes more uniform, and the sediments are mainly composed of coarse sand. Due to the un-operation, the change of the particle type is less than the the first nuclear plant. lt is a more stable sediment environment. Due to the influence of river improvement project in the upper reaches of Shuangxi, the sand carrying downstream was greatly reduced, and resulted in the decrease of sediment near this power plant. The fine mud content in the inlet, outlet and background stations were also significant reduced. The reduction of fine mud can increase the habitat diversity. The stable environment allow inhabited many species with different life characteristics, and the organic matter content in the environment is high, resulted in many benthic animals inhabited here. The dominant species includes high environmental tolerance. nematode (Chromadora nudicapitata), and low-tolerance polychaete splenolae (Syllis sclerolaema) and Syllis ramosa, Aega dofleini, amphipod (Robertgurneya rostrata) and harpacticoida (Pontogeneia rostrata). The difference in sediment environment between the two power plants showed that the particle distribution of the forth power plant is more uniform than that of the first power plant, and the forth plant has lower fine mud content while more total organic matter, allows the sedimentary environment of the forth plant provide more habitats. This differencee and food sources resulted in the fourth power plant becomes more inhabitable, The change of sediment size is not as large as that of the first nuclear plant. It becomes a stable environment for benthic animals. The long-term ecological survey, found that, the benthic communities of commercial operating nuclear plant is different from the sealed nuclear storage plant. The different operation modes affect the environmental conditions and stability of the sediments, The adaptive ability of macrobenthic species will also be different. The characteristics and diversity of the macrobenthic communities structure around the two nuclear power plants thus are different.

碩士<br>國立臺北科技大學<br>能源與冷凍空調工程系<br>107<br>Contamination Free Manufacturing (CFM) is one of the most important requirements in Semiconductor high-tech facilities, especially for Integrated Circuits (IC) manufacturing. This concept has historically involved not only particle control (solids) but also airborne molecular contamination (AMC) (chemical contamination). Particle control is always handled by several filters and elements which are main components of clean room (CR) for semiconductor products. Basically, a cleanroom performs both catch outside particles and release remaining and generated particles inside of the clean room. On the other hand, chemical contamination has to be expelled by blanking or purging methods. Humid air that blows from the top of a Mini-Environment (ME) can enter into to a moisture-free FOUP by different ways like a flow over an open cavity and it could be deflected by tools or elements. Relative humidity (RH) has to be kept in extremely low levels during wafer’s manufacturing process and queue time between processes inside the FOUP; otherwise, remaining moisture, oxygen and chemicals around the wafers together create a hazardous atmosphere which directly affects the product yield and performance. The prevention methods for this door-open case and tool arrangement cases uses elements called purging devices which inject Clean Dry Air (CDA) from the back part and outside of the FOUP creating a counter dry flow and a moisture-free barrier respectively. Modifications on mid-high section of the Mini-environment (from the ceiling to few centimeters bellow the FOUP’s bottom edge are more critical than variations on the floor. When both purging devices are working together, they present good moisture prevention due to a high purging gas flow rate and the physical constrain created by the Air Curtain’s casing that blocks humid air penetration from the highest zone of the FOUP.

Abstract:
The restricted geographic range and tenuous conservation status of wild dogs in South Africa were the motivating factors behind this study. Wild dogs have been extirpated from most of their historic range in South Africa, and now occur in three limited distributions: a) one viable population in Kruger National Park; b) a protected meta-population, consisting of 1 packs in six sub-populations (four on state owned reserves – Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, Madikwe Game Reserve, Marakele National Park, Pilanesberg National Park, and two on privately owned reserves – Karongwe Game Reserve, and Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve), and c) ` 76 unprotected individuals in 17 packs and dispersing groups occurring outside protected areas, primarily in the game ranching areas of the extreme north and north east. Prior to the establishment of the proposed transfontier parks, the best prospects for range expansion likely exist on private land. My study investigated some of the ecological, sociological and economic issues associated with wild dog conservation on private land under various scenarios. Over the last few years, the focus of conservation efforts and donor funding expenditure (72.6% of funding) has been the establishment of the meta-population. This been effective – the target size (nine packs) of the meta-population has been exceeded in six years, four years less than the targeted schedule (10 years). From here, there are two ways in which donor funding might be used to achieve further range expansion outside state protected areas, through expansion of the meta-population by reintroducing wild dogs onto private nature reserves, and through the conservation of wild dogs in situ on ranchland. For either strategy, an estimated minimum area of 158.5 km2 is required to support the predation requirements of a pack of 12 wild dogs in northern South Africa, 172.8 km2 in eastern South Africa, and 354.2 km2 in north-eastern South Africa. Private reserve owners may not be willing to accept the costs of predation by wild dogs in the absence of compensation. Compensation for predation ($9,563 - $101,762/year) in addition to the high start up costs of wild dog reintroductions ($36,880) would increase annual donor funding requirements by 1.3 – 4 times, and reduce the cost efficiency of this strategy below that of alternative conservation options. However, there is potential to generate substantial revenue from wild dog-based ecotourism ($11,000 - $60,000/pack/year), and given careful reserve selection, tourism benefits can exceed the costs. Consequently, private reserve owners might be encouraged to reintroduce wild dogs at their own cost. In line with this, the Wild dog Advisory Group-SA has received enquiries from several private reserve owners interested in reintroducing wild dogs onto their properties. The expansion of the meta-population should be limited to state-owned reserves and private reserves willing to carry the costs. There are more wild dogs occurring outside protected areas than previously recognised. Potentially important founder populations occur in game ranching areas in eastern (1-3 resident packs and dispersing groups), northern (1-5 resident packs and dispersing groups) and western Limpopo (1-5 resident packs and dispersing groups), and large areas (88,750 km2) of potentially suitable habitat for range expansion are currently available. Persecution by landowners remains a significant problem, however, and until this is controlled, range expansion is unlikely to occur. Negative attitudes (47.7% of ranchers) are typically based upon perceived or real economic costs associated with wild dogs, and the removal of cost burdens from landowners is the most direct way in which attitudes might be improved. Despite the high annual costs associated with predation by wild dogs on ranchland ($11,942 - $115,761), the low logistical costs ($3,572 initially, and then $15,382 annually thereafter) associated with conserving wild dogs in situ on ranchland render this option more cost efficient than the reintroduction of wild dogs onto private reserves (14-27 packs conserve / $100,000 cf. 3-19 packs / $100,000). Furthermore, tourism revenue from wild dogs has the potential to offset the costs of their predation on ranchland under most scenarios, and promoting the conservation of wild dogs in situ on ranchland by assisting ranchers in establishing wild dog-ecotourism operations should be the focus of future conservation efforts. A substantial proportion of ranchers (52.3%) are positive towards wild dogs, and private landowners are potentially important facilitators in the conservation of the species in South Africa. The focus on future conservation efforts involving wild dogs in South Africa should be to establish wild dog populations in the proposed Limpopo/Shashi and Lubombo transfrontier conservation areas as soon as they are established, to encourage private reserve owners to reintroduce wild dogs at their own expense ,and to promote the conservation of naturally occurring wild dogs in situ on ranchland, by encouraging and assisting ranchers to establish wild dog-ecotourism programmes.<br>Thesis (DPhil (Zoology))--University of Pretoria, 2006.<br>Zoology and Entomology<br>unrestricted

Abstract:
This qualitative case study concerns the educational processes undertaken in an environmental programme of Timeleni Bomake group at Nsingweni, a rural community in Swaziland. At the time of the research most of the group members were elderly women with about four men among whom is the facilitator, a teacher at Nsingweni Primary School. The inquiry occurred through fieldwork involving interviews, observation and photography. Data analysis followed an inductive process that builds concepts. Formed in 1990, the group saw dramatic economic gain in the 1990's through a gardening project supported by Yonge Nawe environmental action group and the facilitator. At the beginning of the new millennium the participants' intrinsic abilities to sustain the group were put to test. Challenges emerged that reduced the enthusiasm of some group members such that the study found the group at the edge of collapse. This report concludes with recommendations on ways to sustain community programmes.<br>Educational Studies<br>Thesis (M. Ed. (Environmental Education))

Abstract:
碩士<br>南華大學<br>生死學研究所<br>92<br>In this thesis, information about the targeted research geographical area-the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard was gathered on site, rather than gathered from rational analysis in the laboratory.. For without field understanding, the research will only be a theory. Therefore, in the process of investigation, things were observed from a local point of view, rather an outsider, in order that one may respect the “field experience” existing in the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard. The “field experience” is a presentation of all kinds of human activities, including both spiritual and non-spiritual. The main points of this thesis lie in describing the observations and feelings upon constructing that time and space during field investigation. The purpose of the research is to reveal the relations existing between Tainan city citizens and the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard. The relations concern the citizens’ emotions placing upon the graveyard as time changes. It is hoped that through analysis the emotions and feelings of Tainan city citizens during their spiritual offering can be clarify. To understand the chronological change of the structure, both physical and spiritual, of the graveyard, several aspects were examined, including history, memory, activities, legend, symbolic figures and culture. It is found that the graveyard is not the core where the citizens’ activities occurred. The collective memories about the graveyard are too far away from the life of modern Tainan citizens. The modern Tainan citizens regard themselves as outsiders from the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard. Their only connection with the graveyard is ancestor worship during Tomb Sweeping Festival. Thus, it is afraid that the death related culture of the graveyard would be devoured by the economically interest space which created as a result of mass production of city public facilities. However, the families were observed to be completely spiritually devoted to their lost ones during the burial ceremony, their imagines entering a world created by the religious ceremony, thus their uncertain fear about death was settled in that world. This indicates that the living people can control their images about death. It can be seen that every square inch of the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard is a signifier. That is, the religious ceremonies reoccurring on the graveyard have social functions and religious functions. The ceremonies were able to comfort the hearts of man and give the ones who lost the courage and strength to live on. It is hope that the conclusions of the research can offer one way of thought for those groups or individuals who in the future would seek to operate and rebuilt southern suburb of Tainan City, along the banks of the Bamboo Stream.
