Abstract:
Social learning theory asserts that learning involves constructing knowledge through dialogue with others. Traditional learning spaces designed with didactic pedagogies in mind are often not flexible enough to cater to the range of social learning activities promoted by educationalists in classrooms today. This thesis investigates the interaction between social constructivist theories of learning and urban design, developing a body of social learning space design theory as well as space design principles which foster social learning in a university setting. The research uses an 'Enquiry by Design' methodology to develop the principles, basing this enquiry on two case studies: (i) a pilot study analysing an existing social learning space; the Simon Williams Undergraduate Centre, and (ii) an ongoing masterplanning project at Oxford Brookes University's Gipsy Lane campus, Space to Think.

Iwaki, Yukinori. "Global justice from outside-the-box." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31146.

Full text
Abstract:
We live in a severely unequal world. Pressing questions are, then, what changes the global advantaged should bring about to improve the situation of the global disadvantaged, and why they should do so in the first place. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 answer the latter question whereas chapters 4 and 5 answer the former. Chapter 1 considers Peter Singer’s ‘non-relationist’ and Thomas Pogge’s ‘relationist’ approaches to global justice. The chapter argues that Pogge’s argument is more compelling than Singer’s, but that it is incomplete. To make a relationist argument more plausible, the chapter draws on two critical social theorists: Alf Hornborg and David Harvey. Based on their analyses, and employing the perspectives of ‘human time’ and ‘ecological space’, the chapter concludes that the advantaged are in violation of a stringent negative duty by being complicit in the harmful global system. The chapter also introduces two kinds of debt – ‘temporal debt’ and ‘ecological debt’ – that the advantaged may owe the disadvantaged. Chapter 2 argues that the global system is not only harmful but severely harmful: it is likely to reproduce ‘absolute harm’ (a harm that infringes upon minimum human well-being). Chapter 3 discusses what positive action the advantaged ought to take because of the negative-duty violation and the problem-solving ability they have. Focusing on two kinds of action – reparation and remedy – the chapter argues that achieving reparation may face practical problems, but that the advantaged should act immediately to provide remedy – in particular, institutional remedy – for the disadvantaged. In doing so, the chapter commends the ‘advantaged remedy’ principle. Chapters 4 and 5 consider remedial institutions which the advantaged should strive to create and uphold. Chapter 4 focuses on one which we already have: the UN Global Compact. The chapter argues that this institution is necessary in the light of present global circumstances and also advances a set of principles appropriate to protect minimum human well-being. But it concludes that this reformist institution may turn out to be insufficient. Based on this conclusion, chapter 5 supports a more radical proposal: a market-socialist proposal offered by Leslie Sklair. Sklair’s account, however, does not explain why it is market socialism, rather than a non-market alternative, that should be pursued. Neither does it show how market-socialist institutions would remedy the global-systemic problems that are likely to afflict the disadvantaged. The chapter offers answers to these questions by drawing on David Miller (for the first question) and David Schweickart (for the second question). The chapter then argues that market socialism, if accompanied by an appropriate ethos, would serve to remedy the situation of the global disadvantaged. Meanwhile, the shift to market socialism would, and should, take time. So, this project concludes by considering a supplementary institution that may need to be implemented in the meantime: an ecological space tax.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the life histories and present day experiences of female students from a college located east of Los Angeles with regards to their relationships with nature and outdoor recreation. I use data collected from in-depth interviews with eight women. These interviews illuminated the impacts that their fathers had on their early socialization with nature as well as their perspectives on being women in the outdoors. Furthermore, an analysis of an on-campus club reveals the ways in which outdoor recreation is not accessible for all individuals. These findings add to the existing bodies of literature on public space as well as the formation of early adulthood experiences with the outdoors among women resulting from childhood socialization.

Vigroux, Marilène. "Esthétique du où ? : Sur le sentiment de l'espace." Thesis, Aix-Marseille 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011AIX10167/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Falling in the 'where ?' is having the feeling of space, which isn't spatiality. We are not a body in space anymore, but a space-body (no place for the here). The where ? is not an absolute into but the impossibility of an into and the impossibility of the event of being (no opening). There is an immobility in which everything runs, but idle. The where ? doesn't even have the where of the question as an answer. It's question mark is it's impossible rest. What is left for the artist to give ? Isn't he precisely doing something else than giving ? The artist de-creates and his work asks the question : where doesn't it flow ? Falling in the 'where ?' is falling in the strangeness of the other of the event. It's welcoming the other, the strange(r), with no lessening of strangeness. The impossibility of taking place un-creates itself. The feeling of space is the other of sensitivity and not another sensitivity to. It is the other of the encounter. The feeling is taken by the body. Falling in the 'where ?' is a dis-insertion from space where the already willing of the donation does not take place. Welcoming the other is losing one's abode with oneself, it is welcoming outside. The dis-insertion from space is the other of departing. The calling from outside is the calling of the outside, the calling of there is, my calling. In the aesthetics of the where ? we are not in the calling from the outside. The relationship with the Other will be it's exhibition, it's overflowing, it's profanation, the profanation of the Whole and the One. Man does something else than willing, he dances. Falling in the 'where ?' is exiting from might into the tragic enjoyment of the eternal return. It is thinking where ?

Abstract:
This thesis concentrates on problematic field of architectural education and practice related to window role. Phenomena of window loosing it’s primary functional purpose [inside-outside connection in terms of view and daylight] and becoming more decorative element of the facade. This paper content consists of analysis of case studies by evaluating window provided light and view qualities using qualitative and quantitative methods in chosen office buildings. Analysis and results are followed by the discussion of window role oppositions between architect’s and user’s perspective together with secondary topics coming out of it. As the result of analysis and discussion - guidelines for window design are suggested and conclusive experiment of their customization is demonstrated. This thesis  concentrates on awareness of window identity crisis as well as examine and provide simple manners, which can increase quality of daylight and view through the openings in architectural planning.

Abstract:
I started the project by doing a workshop with aclassmate using a derivative of the german officeBaupiloten’s methods. The goal of the workshop was toextract their actual needs and wishes.Traditionally when asking a client “What do you want?”,they’ll be constricted by their own reality and context.Taking children as an example they would ask for moreslides or a trampoline. By using an seemingly nonconnectedand abstract task the children can expresstheir actuals needs and wishes for their enviroment. We had a group of 8, 5 year old children that we showed 9pictures of natural phenomena while telling the childrenabout the pictures to spark their imagination. Afterwardwe asked each child to pick the pictures they liked. Withthem and other material we then instructed them to“construct worlds” inside A4-boxes. During the wholeprocess speaking to the children to extract their thoughtprocess as thoroughly as possible. On top of this the concept was based on the ongoingdebate regarding the lack of outdoor areas for childrenin Stockholm as well as the pedagogies of Reggio Emiliaand Montessori. From this I derived four key points.

Karlsson, Emilia, and Ståhl Matilda. "Förändring av gårdsmiljöer i miljonprogramsområden för att påverka segregation." Thesis, Växjö universitet, Institutionen för teknik och design, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-88755.

Full text
Abstract:
In the middle of 20th Century, there was a significant change in the development of housing in Sweden. The change came to be called the Million house programme, where one million new and modernized houses and residential areas were erected over a ten-year period. Many of these residential areas are perceived as insecure, run down and several are today segregated. The purpose of this study is by development of a million house programme external environment affect segregation, with reference to the quality of the residential area. The goal is to study how the external spaces in a million house programme area can affect segregation through the development and ensuring of the outdoor environment values. The purpose and goal is achieved through literature studies, field studies and interviews. The results from the applied methods notes that the areas are worn, unkempt and scanty. Suggestions are also presented for action. In conclusion, the importance of careful management, zoning and foreclosure in the million house programme areas external spaces have an impact on segregation. However, the affects of segregation and integration depends also on other societal aspects and measures that should all be considered in the planned change of a segregated area.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is, first, to explore the presence and meaning of Foucault’s heterotopia within William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”and Beaumont and Fletcher’s “The Knight of the Burning Pestle.” The heterotopia is a privileged space of self-reflection created by individuals or societies in crisis. In each play, the presence of crisis is explained though the metaphor of syphilis; to which individual characters respond by entering the reflective space of the heterotopia in order to countenance and “cure” their afflictions. The second purpose of this thesis is to examine the ways in which the crises acted upon the stage reflect pressing social anxieties of late – Elizabethan and early- Jacobean England: succession to the throne and shifting market structure. Both playwrights create heterotopic space for their audience through the structure of their dramatic work, and ask their audience to enter this reflective space, and consider –and learn from – their remarks upon the state of society.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain student and teacher perceptions of the environment in which student learning takes place and their perceptions of how it has helped them in the cognitive and social domains. Data collected were through student and teacher perception surveys, student and teacher perception questionnaires, classroom observations, student focus group discussions, and teacher interviews. Themes that emerged from the data sources were student interactions, students' autonomy in personalizing their learning space, teacher perceptions of comfort in the classroom, and student perceptions of comfort in the classroom. The findings of this study point to four recommendations for educational leaders to ensure the effective implementation of new and dynamic learning spaces: (1) consult and support teacher and students, (2) provide professional development, (3) visit campuses and other learning spaces, and (4) add color. In order for real change to take place, teachers need to enquire about and embrace student preferences and allow for the discomfort that will be present when trying something new. Teachers must be willing to relinquish control of the learning experience for the student in order to allow for possibilities in personalized learning on the part of the student. They must risk initial failure in order to allow for greater successes in the long run.

Howarth, M. J. "The application of advanced computer models to the prediction of sound in enclosed spaces." Thesis, University of Salford, 1998. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14677/.

Full text
Abstract:
Computer modelling of acoustics in enclosures has developed into various forms, none of which have yet demonstrated 100% accuracy. This thesis therefore details a study of room acoustic computer modelling. It highlights weaknesses with existing modelling techniques and describes the development and subsequent verification of an improved modelling technique. The study discovers that for accurate prediction of many common room acoustic parameters diffuse reflections should be accounted for in the modelling of all reflection orders. However, many of the problems encountered in existing techniques are found to be caused by the way these diffuse reflections are modelled. An improved modelling technique, referred to as a 'Hybrid-Markov' method, is proposed and developed that combines a conventional hybrid method with a radiantexchange process to model diffuse reflections. Initial verification of the new modelling technique results in similar overall accuracies to existing modelling techniques but solves many of the specific problems discovered. It therefore provides a flexible and robust framework for the future development of computer prediction of sound in enclosed spaces.

Abstract:
There is a growing body of literature which advocates the psychological benefits of contact with the natural world. The existing literature on therapy in outdoor contexts (Linden and Grut, 2002; Berger, 2006;2007; Berger and McLeod, 2006; Burns, 1998) offers some insight into the practical and therapeutic issues encountered when moving outdoors and ways of working therapeutically in an outdoor natural space. One of the weaknesses of the literature is a limited discussion of how the therapeutic frame is affected by the move outdoors and a thorough discussion of the practice issues encountered when moving outdoors and how these might link to the therapeutic process and relationship.

This study investigates adolescents’ perceptions and thoughts on English outside of school. Adolescents come in contact with English everywhere these days and English has become more of a second language than a foreign language in today’s society. The purpose of this study is to get a deeper understanding of what young people think about the English they meet in their spare time. Four young people who are all ninth-graders were interviewed for the study. They were asked questions about where they meet English in their spare time, how they use the language and how they learn English outside of school. Their responses show that adolescents come in contact with English through different sources, they use the language according to their interests and they all go about learning English in different ways.

Abstract:
Undocumented students in the United States continue to face unique barriers to postsecondary success. One way that community colleges and 4-year institutions are providing support for undocumented students is establishing undocumented student resource centers (USRCs). These emerging identity-based centers are dedicated spaces of support and provide customized, comprehensive resources for undocumented college students. A multipronged theoretical framework that included undocu-competence, the institutionalization process, and critical theory, was used as a lens to examine how USRC professionals and affiliates understand the development, role, and function of a USRC on a California community college campus. Qualitative single case study methods, including in-depth semistructured interviews, observations, and document analysis, were utilized to meet the purpose of the study. The findings revealed three primary themes. First, the institutionalization process of the USRC at the center of this study was complex, imperfect, and ongoing. Second, there are strengths and limitations respective to the USRC's capacity to operationalize support and safety. Finally, the compounded impact of the current socio-political moment cannot be evaded with respect to the USRC's function. Subsequently, three primary points of discussion are explored, including critiquing the process of USRC institutionalization, complicating the notion of safe spaces on campuses, and calling for inside-outside strategies of support in order to best serve undocumented students.

Abstract:
The present research aims at understanding how the musical practices are carried out outside music classes in the space/time in the State Conservatory of Music "Dr. José Zôccoli de Andrade" of Ituiutaba-MG. The student of this Conservatory are seen as social beings made of numerous characteristics due to their socio-cultural context, which is directly related to their musical practices in the school of music. From the point of view related everyday life theories, it was intended to also understand what those musical practices were and how they used to happen and to be organized in space/time when students are at the Conservatory but out of music class in space/time like hallways, patio, hall and even the classroom itself, free time between classes, at the unofficial break time, among others. The theoretical view directed to these practices is based on some concepts of theories of everyday life from the perspective of Pais (2003), of music education as social practice in the vision of Souza (2000, 2004, 2009), the ideas of Brougère (2012) about learning in daily life, and in the concepts of space/time of Lindôn (2000). In a qualitative approach, the case study was the method adopted in this research, and data collection procedures were observations and interviews with students. It is concluded that the students are organized in different ways to perform these musical practices, some of them expected and not expected, individual or/and shared ways and grounded on performances and musical listening. The musical practices carried out in the space/free time music class are important actions in the context of this diversified School of music, and that contributes to the understanding of the teaching/learning processes in the musical Conservatory.<br>Dissertação (Mestrado)

More and more research studies are being conducted on the quality of architectural space as a factor affecting our mental, social and physical health. In the past, this topic was often overlooked in its complexity. The establishment of the specialized fields of building biology, biophilic architecture and the works of Christopher Alexander and Nikos Salingaros now allow us to consider various facets of this subject. This dissertation aims to analyse the topic of vitality in architectural space by studying the abilities and perceptions of its users. Therefore its aim is not to develop a new theory of “vitality-enhancing architectural space”, but to describe how this phenomenon is perceived by the users themselves. Users can provide feedback on which features of architectural space they see as the most important for the feeling of vitality. These features have been hierarchically organized based on their perceived importance, analysed and described in detail to allow their relatively easy application in practice. This dissertation will also allow a comparison with other existing works on the studied topic.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with the protection of a consumer in consumer contracts with the fact that it is based on Czech law as well as on European Union legislation, because there are directions, which had to be implemented into the legal order of the Czech Republic. First of all I deal with basic characteristic of the legal regulation of consumer protection and its sources. The issue of consumer contracts is divided into three parts. The first one is just about contracts and rules, which determine all consumer contracts. The second part describes specific types of consumer contracts and finally I outlined perspective of a next development of this problem. I also try to focus on European aspect of regulation of consumer contracts and I found out, that Czech lawmaker has got a massive lack of knowledge in the implementation.

Abstract:
Though born a century apart, American poets Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath share several similarities: Both were born in New England, both fought for their rights by writing, and both broke new poetic ground.          In this thesis, I look at their poetry through a movement in space, which begins with the poets’ precarious position as societal outliers and ends with ascension. I examine what crossing the threshold meant to them, physically and metaphorically, and how it is mirrored in their poems, I look at how the physical space in which they wrote color their poetry, I examine windows as a space of transit, and finally I take a closer look at the shape ascension takes in selected poems. I propose this road, this movement in space, is mirrored in both Dickinson’s and Plath’s poetry.      I use as my method deconstruction, to uncover hints and possibilities. I scan letters and journals, biographies and memoirs. As my theoretical framework, I use Walter Benjamin’s ideas about the threshold as a place of transit, as well as his thoughts about the flaneur as the observer of the crowd, both of which are presented in The Arcades Project. To further examine the threshold as a space for pause, reconsideration, retreat, or advance, I rely on Subha Mukheriji and her book Thinking on Thresholds: The Poetics of Transitive Spaces. I further use Gaston Bachelard’s seminal The Poetics of Spaceto investigate the poets’ response to the physical space in which they wrote. I look at ascension through the prism offered by the ideas of Mircea Eliade as presented in Myths, Dreams, and Mysteries: The Encounter Between Contemporary Faiths and Archaic Realities.

Abstract:
Varsågod.<br>Dinosaurs, dragons, weapons, spaceships, aliens, fire, monsters, dangerous animals. Never interested me. That's why they interest me. Through intuitive sculpting, stories about my traumas, lusts and needs are formed, and about the society they exist in. I can see a tension towards the boy I never was/the man I never became, and a longing after to now approach him om my own terms. The sculptures are crooked, weak, broken, naive and weird, and in this becomes a vital space where that is allowed. The pieces are standing with the underdogs. In a movement upwards.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺南藝術大學<br>建築藝術研究所<br>97<br>On the basis of querying the authenticity and emotion of the Paper Architecture in traditional architecture education, I chose to enter “ Interbreeding Field ”to study. Because of personally participating in the process of building and constructing space, I try to figure out the difference of the atmosphere given from space scene that be constructed by different body perception. And I attempt to touch the spirit degree in the architecture space, explore the meaning to oneself, him person, environment of the architecture. By indication reading of illegal structure phenomenon, let me pay attention to marginal space that are often to be ignored in our daily life. Towards intervening the management of long-standing field, I have put forward “Outside-in slip”. It is a concept of agitating the space. Take my creation in Mountain 99 Park of Art and Ecology as a example, I try to elaborate on my attitude, notion, and the ways while I get involve in constructing a new field. I wish visitors can realize my intent that I mean to construct the emotion and memories between people and space while they experience“the heart to heart center under a tree”and“the harbored roost outside the nest”. And let visitors resume paying attention to their living field in the daily life, and think, introspect, and revise their attitude and direction about the management of living environment.

Parsons, Phillipa. "Thinking outside borders: exploring how the history classroom can be a space to foster ideas of critical, post-national citizenship." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1355314.

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>Young people will face a world of climate threat, precarious work futures, increasing domestic and global inequalities, wars, and growing racism and intolerance. The looming question is how these global challenges can be effectively addressed through global collaboration. The overarching question guiding this study is how the History classroom can be a space to foster ideas about being a citizen that transcend national borders. The study reviews the literature around cosmopolitanism, global citizenship, and multi-dimensional citizenship, as well as historical thinking for historical and moral consciousness; such consciousness considered a prerequisite for a sense of global human solidarity. This provided impetus for the study to investigate how History teachers interpreted what it is that they do, and why. Adopting a hermeneutic interpretive phenomenological approach and influenced by Max van Manen’s ideas of hermeneutic phenomenology, the methodology was restyled to best suit the research purpose and context. Data were collected and interpreted from survey narratives and ten semi-structured interviews, including three case studies, with practising History teachers. Using sub-research questions as hermeneutic tools, History teachers’ conceptualisations of citizenship, and interpretations of the purpose of History led to two main theses that address the overarching question. Overall, the findings suggest that if the History classroom is to be an authentic and relevant space to foster broader notions of what it means to enact ‘good’ citizenship, teachers need to explicitly incorporate that in their conceptual understanding of the subject. The teachers had some ideas about citizenship, but how that concept related to the teaching and learning of History was poorly understood. One concluding thesis is that the degree to which historical thinking can be aligned to critical, post-national ideas of citizenship must be made explicit for teachers. This connection is not explicitly made and without direction many teachers miss opportunities that align with their own notions when they are pressed to consider effective teaching for citizenship. The second conclusion reached is that teachers must authentically connect the past with the present, and to do so teachers need to be empowered to introduce current controversial issues into the classroom. Teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge remains a priority in teacher education. However, ‘citizenship’ as globally connected across time and space with a sense of shared humanity, needs to be addressed as an integral part of that conceptual framework. For the study of the past to have authentic relevance for students, it must contribute to the formation of the skills, values and knowledge necessary for citizens of the 21st century living in an increasingly globally connected world, and facing challenges requiring global co-operation. With implications for both pre-service and in-service teacher education, this study contributes to an understanding of how History can explicitly contribute to the formation and development of these informed and active global citizens.

Abstract:
The scope of this study focuses on the concept of In Between with the intention of creating a space of transition and connection between inside and outside, and the simultaneous perception of the two environments. This study will explore the idea of the In Between within the context of a proposed student garden for Edmonton Clinic North, located within the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The intention is to present a design idea that responds to transitioning from one environment to the other as well as exploring opportunities in creating a place that creates the sense of In Between. The concepts of inside | outside, materiality and precedents are researched and analyzed to inform the understanding of the In Between. This research will contribute to the schematic design of the site that exhibits the sense of In Between.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the researcher’s journey as an online facilitator and reflective organization development (OD) practitioner as she explores how to nurture and cultivate space for learning and collaboration in an online community of practice. The research setting is a small group of mostly volunteers in a national health charity. The researcher adopts a reflective practitioner research approach engaging in a continuous process of story-telling throughout the thesis. She struggles with questions such as her own dynamic role as an outside facilitator, the role of technology, dilemmas of emergence versus design and discovery of purpose. Rather than arriving at a to-do-list for potential online facilitators, she discovers that hosting café style conversations, setting the online tables and enabling space for learning, collaboration and aliveness is more a matter of the facilitator’s capacity to listen, to be authentically present and to relinquish control.

This study is intended to be an investigation of using natural ventilation at specially safe stairs and stair vestibules, and know what the relationship among building outside space, side room, and fire smoke are. Take 25 storeys residential buildings as an example, in conclusion, 1. When fire storey is getting lower and wind direction is reverse parallel, fire smoke affects the side room seriously. 2. No matter how augments depth or broad of building outside space, it is no use to made side room safety. 3. High buildings should avoid to design the building outside space, and Stair vestibules should avoid to use the Natural Ventilation Design.

Arnold, Jobb. "Inside and Outside Peace and Prosperity: Post-Conflict Cultural Spaces in Rwanda and Northern Ireland." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/12223.

Full text
Abstract:
In post-conflict settings real and imagined boundaries do a great deal to determine who is inside and who is outside of state-based narratives of peace and prosperity. Based on case studies in Rwanda and Northern Ireland, I provide an analysis of the post-conflict periods and the impact of neoliberal-styled governance on the dynamics of power. I argue that as power shifted, ‘peace’ also entailed a general social pacification, and prosperity equated to greater private profit. However, top-down social engineering has not contained the entire field of social struggle. I examine micro-level interventions taking place on the margins of mainstream discourse that trouble the moralizing state-narratives that seek to legitimate structural violence. Such spaces facilitate alternative values and practices that contribute to sustained social and cultural resilience, as well as forms of resistance. Post-conflict Rwanda and Northern Ireland have been impacted by both coercive and consensual forms of social engineering. In Rwanda, state-based framework laws and forceful regimes of local implementation rely on stark contingencies of reward and punishment to shape and control behaviour in the public sphere. In Northern Ireland, the power-sharing structure of the Belfast Agreement has reinforced ethnic politics, while depoliticizing and instrumentalizing civil society in support of its neoliberal policies. I present ethnographic research and interviews conducted with community organizations in Northern Ireland (Ikon) and Rwanda (Student Association of Genocide Survivors - AERG) that demonstrates how alternative discourses and practices are emerging in the cracks of these top-down systems. I explore Ikon’s use of creative performances and radical theology to create socially resonant cultural spaces that function as temporary autonomous zones. These TAZs unsettle aspects of individual identity while intentionally seeking to destabilize mainstream power dynamics. Unlike Ikon, AERG faces greater public scrutiny and higher political stakes. They demonstrate an adherence to the dominant social script in the public sphere, while exhibiting micro- level agency through trauma healing, and material support in private day-to-day practices. AERG’s performance in the public sphere creates temporary spaces of encounter that exceed the boundaries of official discourse, making their alternative presence felt while remaining illegible to the dominant surveillance frameworks.<br>Thesis (Ph.D, Cultural Studies) -- Queen's University, 2014-06-02 11:02:09.033

The poetic universe of Georges Rodenbach and António Nobre presents convergent and divergent points between them at the level of the forms and at the level of the themes as well. This work focus the analysis of the «topos» of the disease, taking into account the specificity of each author, the way each one of them represents the disease, without forgetting what in each of them is the influence of their own life, the environment where they evolve and in which they move and especially the “Finde- siècle” context where their works were published. It will be analysed the way as the “topos”of the disease is presented in their poetic work, in articulation with their poetics, their esthetical and imaginary universe, which at the end of our work will show the link we can establish between the Belgian and the Portuguese author.

Abstract:
M.A. University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Humanities (The African Centre for Migration & Society), 2012<br>This research is located in the broader body of literature and activity that have sought to comprehend the xenophobic violence of 2008 in South Africa and the persistence of this phenomenon, especially in poor locales of the main urban areas. The primary objective is to explore the perceptions that South Africans have of the rights of those people designated as outsiders and/or foreigners who live in areas that have experienced xenophobic violence targeting foreigners as well as people of South African minority ethnic groups. This study attempts to unpack the discourse of insider versus outsider rights within South African communities in relation to South Africa’s recent history - the xenophobic violence of 2008. Notably, it examines the challenge brought about by the crushing of space and time as an effect of globalization and how this has contributed to the process of multi-culturalism and multi-ethnicity that local communities are largely unprepared to cope with. This study contributes to the understanding of “otherness” as a key issue to design and implement better policies and practices that are necessary to promote the social and spatial inclusion of international migrants in Africa and the world. The empirics of this study give credence to the view that migrants’ rights operate at the rhetorical level, largely due to the lack of political will to translate them into actual benefits. The study specifically looks at two communities affected by xenophobic violence - Tembisa and Alexandra. Focusing on South Africans, the study draws on information gathered through in-depth semi-structured interviews and group discussions carried out from July through October 2011. The findings are examined through thematic content analysis.

Abstract:
The study focuses on women’s experiences of abuse resulting in trauma. This research performance was conducted within a practical theology framework guided by a de-centred participatory action research process. The study was conducted against a postmodern background and was informed by social construction discourse. Its aim was to explore whether and how narrative pastoral counselling using outsider witnessing could be helpful in finding new preferred ways of living, resulting in healing, resilience and hope for women who had experienced abuse and trauma. The outsider witness group explored practical ways of listening, observing and responding to the pain and suffering of others, resulting in a new performance of the self as valuable, competent, and enabling those who are witnessed to believe that they are survivors that have lived through and beyond the limited life span of abuse and trauma. The research report ends with a play, New Seasons, which is to be performed in front of live audiences in the course of 2012.<br>Practical Theology<br>M. Th. Abstract:
In this thesis I intend to perform an analysis of the space where patents exist in street art. Street art, independently of its esthetic quality, technique or size, is in principle designedfor that specific place even though it isn’t deemed the obvious choice. Modern graffiti, in the era following the 1960s, based on American cities, and the post-graffiti or street art nowadays contains an extensive application of materials, techiques, and sizes which make this subject a matter of research, documentaries, interviews ,and lectures that served as a support for this thesis. Graffiti, just like street art, has categories that are of interest to analyze for this thesis. Therefore it requires the comprehension of this phenomenon in a historical context with differentiation of terms and practices to create a selective criteria of graffiti and street art categories to investigate.
