Abstract:
The discoveries of the first planets around a pulsar and around a star similar to our Sun have opened, after centuries of speculation, a new era in astronomy. The quest for other worlds has become reality. In this paper, the motivations for this search are presented. A comparative review is made of different techniques for their detection, with special attention paid to the planet parameters that can be derived from each method. The first discoveries and their astrophysical consequences are analysed. New questions and future projects beyond these first discoveries are reviewed, with special attention given to the search for life in extrasolar planetary systems. Finally, worldwide activities and the role of Europe are described.

Abstract:
In the 1960s, design education in the United Kingdom was in a state of flux. It was changing from a more or less egalitarian system, first established in the 1830s, to one which sought to separate the sheep from the goats on academic lines at a time when a more comprehensive system was being developed in schools of general education. This account tells of a design course in the 'vocational' sector of the new system which made typography its central design discipline.

Abstract:
Abstract The All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees occupies a position outside the official legislative system of the United Kingdom, but inside a lobbying network. This gives it a unique place in terms of communicating on behalf of refugees and refugee causes. The Group’s Twitter feed shows that its language is different to that of campaigning organisations outside Parliament and is constrained by procedure, parliamentary practice and the political reality of a party-based environment. Aimed at Parliamentarians, the feed is used to support and promote causes and specific policy proposals. It plays a role in reporting what is going on in Parliament and supports and builds alliances with other organisations inside and outside the system. The feed’s content follows the primary information-providing objective. It could however make that information of more use to recipients, by changing the way in which some of that information is presented.

Abstract:
If a system falls through a black hole horizon, then its information is lost to an observer at infinity. But we argue that the accessible information is lost before the horizon is crossed. The temperature of the hole limits information carrying signals from a system that has fallen too close to the horizon. Extremal holes have T = 0, but there is a minimum energy required to emit a quantum in the short proper time left before the horizon is crossed. If we attempt to bring the system back to infinity for observation, then acceleration radiation destroys the information. All three considerations give a critical distance from the horizon [Formula: see text], where rH is the horizon radius and ΔE is the energy scale characterizing the system. For systems in string theory where we pack information as densely as possible, this acceleration constraint is found to have a geometric interpretation. These estimates suggest that in theories of gravity we should measure information not as a quantity contained inside a given system, but in terms of how much of that information can be reliably accessed by another observer.

Abstract:
Abstract. The training needs of staff working in mainstream (i.e., noncrisis) health settings with client groups that have moderate levels of suicide risk have not been extensively addressed. An initiative to train rehabilitation and disability staff working in the field of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is described. A program was adapted from a generic state health department training program, and disseminated by means of established training networks within the brain injury field. Program efficacy was evaluated as the training was provided across the state of Victoria in a series of 1-day workshops. Participants (n = 86) completed two evaluation measures designed for this purpose (objective knowledge test, self-rating of knowledge and skills) on three occasions (pre- and postworkshop, 6-month follow-up). Compared to a control group of rehabilitation and disability workers who did not receive the training (n = 27), the workshop participants made significant gains in objective knowledge and reported skills, and maintained these gains at the 6-month follow-up. The Suicide Interview Response Inventory-2 ( Neimeyer & Pfeiffer, 1994 ) was administered to a subgroup of participants as a validating measure, and correlated significantly with scores from the objective knowledge test. This process may provide a template for developing more fine-grained suicide prevention strategies among other health-related at-risk groups.

Abstract:
This paper shares my journey from rigid, self-doubting, and strict to fluid, confident, freedom of thinking as I created, moved, thought, and philosophized my way through an arts-based and community-based research course. In that course, I created a photography piece, “Bluff City Merger.” Through the creation of this project my view of who I was as a researcher and as a person began to shift and an unmasking began to take place by the end of this project. Bluff City Merger created a space that would allow for the individual to construct their own meaning and understanding of all that took place in Memphis, Tennessee (US). The purpose of this piece was to spark conversation and conceptualization surrounding the bussing controversy of the early 70’s in the city of Memphis while also contemplating the current state of the school system by merging photographs from the past with those from the present.

Abstract:
To handle with the limitations of the existing shooting trainingsystems that have large volume, heavy weight, small effective distanceand low evaluation effect, we propose an outsidelight based shooting trainingevaluation system. It records the trace of the aiming point in a shooting process by capturing the images of the outside light source. After that, this system automaticallycomputes target-scoring,and makes the intelligent evaluation of theshooter’s technique level. It can diagnose the holdingstability, trigger controlling, aiming accuracy and other technicalstandards. This system has beensuccessfully applied in the shooting training for police.
