Abstract:
The study’s purpose was to assess the contribution of the Work Release Program of the Israel Prison Service (IPS) to the processes of prisoners’ rehabilitation. We interviewed 22 serving and released prisoners who participated in the program at two prisons in central Israel. Most respondents were positive toward the core components of the program, mainly the work outside the prison. Responses also indicated that the program eased their transition from prison life to life outside. However, some respondents criticized the way in which the program was operated. The article discusses the program’s strengths and weaknesses, and proposes some improvements.

Abstract:
Much research has been compiled on how relationships at work affect job performance, motivation, and satisfaction. There has been very limited research, however, on whether or not relationships outside of work also affect these factors. This thesis will attempt to explore previous research findings and how they may relate to this topic. It will also delve into the findings of the primary research completed during this study, and will cover the results and conclusions this research brought about. Results indicate that people may act outside of their stereotypical need for affiliation role based on how socially fulfilled they are. Results also indicate that those who are emotionally overloaded by the number of relationships in their life may have lower job performance, satisfaction, and motivation. Also supported was the discovery that there is a curvilinear relationship to the number of relationships a person has outside of work and their job satisfaction. This thesis will cover all of these topics and findings and attempt to relate them in a practical manner to both people and organizations.

Abstract:
Employers' reliance on asynchronous electronic communications, connective technology devices, and remote work arrangements has led employees to feel preoccupied with staying connected after-hours to be responsive to work-related demands. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of professional workers who coped with constant pressure to monitor and immediately respond to work-related electronic communications during nonwork hours. The conceptual framework was supported by boundary and border theory and the constructs of work-life balance, flexible work arrangements, information and communication technology. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 16 professional workers near Washington, DC. Moustakas's modified van Kaam method was used to analyze, code, and organize data. Six themes emerged: mobilize or immobilize, manage expectations, safeguard personal time, work-life fusion, work engagement, and psychological outcomes. Findings revealed that professional workers felt a sense of urgency to reply to work-related e-mails and text messages outside of their regularly scheduled work hours and felt a sense of professional obligation to be available after-hours. Results may be used to shape and support positive social change through effective organizational change programs for technology-related work-life imbalances, thereby benefiting employers and employees.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The road freight transport industry as a labour-intensive sector is dependent on the work ability and well-being at work of employees. The majority of the occupational accidents are related to work phases outside the cab. These work phases, which are performed in various different work environments, contain several kinds of ergonomic discomforts. This poses complex challenges for the employers from a safety and productivity point of view. The framework of this thesis is based on the foundations of ergonomics and design science. The main objective was to provide knowledge that can be implemented into the design and management of work systems for local and short haul delivery operations. Material was obtained from two sources. A meta-synthesis was performed to frame holistic management in a human perspective. Furthermore, additional in-depth design knowledge was obtained through participatory ergonomics video analyses on drivers’ work outside the cab. Video analyses resulted in 262 identifications of demanding work situations where ergonomic discomforts and risks of accidents occurred. Sudden over-exertions and strains, falls and slips as well as losing control of work equipment were the most common deviations related to drivers’ work outside the cab and mainly related to physical activities of movement and carrying by hand. The majority of the work situations identified were performed in cargo spaces or elsewhere within the truck structure or at premises and yards that are administered by the customers or other stakeholders. In these environments, drivers tend to perform their work manually or using different types of work equipment. This thesis provides new in-depth knowledge on drivers’ work outside the cab. The results show that different stakeholders can contribute to drivers’ work systems. The knowledge provided by drivers and other stakeholders can be applied to holistic design and management processes at company level. Moreover, the knowledge can also be applied to broader value chain design and management processes
Tiivistelmä Tieliikenteen tavarankuljetus työvoimavaltaisena toimialana on riippuvainen henkilöstön työkyvystä ja -hyvinvoinnista. Suurin osa tapaturmista liittyy työtehtäviin ohjaamon ulkopuolella. Materiaali koostui kahdesta osiosta.

Massu, Justine. "Thinking outside the boss : understanding managers' engagement in creative actions." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCB208/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010, 1,500 Chief Executive Officers identified managers' creativity as the most crucial factor for future organizational success. However, managers' engagement in creative actions is constantly competing with routine behaviors that imply less risk taking, uncertainty and possibility of failure. This dissertation explores three potential avenues to understand managers' decisions to engage in creative actions. The first one focuses on managers' conceptions of creativity and innovation as antecedents of their own creative behaviors and their evaluation of creative managers and managerial practices. The second avenue examines how creative actions result from a decision-making process that evaluates the relevance of creativity in specific situations and takes into account individual predispositions and organizational characteristics. The third avenue investigates the extent to which a fit or misfit between managers and their organizations can trigger creative behaviors. This research reaffirms the relevance of the multivariate and interactionnist approaches to organizational creativity. It highlights also the importance of considering managers' evaluation of the appropriateness and effectiveness of specific creative actions in specific situations. Finally, most research tends to conceive that managerial creativity emerges from positive and encouraging circumstances. In contrast, the present research highlights that managerial creativity can emerge as a response to situations of misfit and dissatisfaction

Abstract:
We evaluate whether floods and landslides are more likely when rain falls inside versus outside protected areas (PAs). We use monthly municipality data for the period 2000-2015 in Guatemala and monthly district data for the period 1992-2019 in Costa Rica. We define relevant catchment areas using water flows to population centers of administrative units. Then, we calculate the precipitation inside and outside PAs within the relevant catchment areas, and test how the frequency of floods and landslides is affected by whether rain falls inside or outside PAs. We use a two-way fixed effect panel data model. For Guatemala, we find no robust statistically significant effects on these types of disasters. However, in Costa Rica, we find that shifts in precipitation towards PAs reduce floods significantly. These results were highly robust. We also find effects on landslides in densely populated districts, as well as reductions in flood-related deaths.

Abstract:
Female-coded family work keeps women away from late working life – but it makes a difference where in Europe they live because Nordic countries do not recognize this divide. Key Findings Childcare impacts upon late working life – women tend to be employed part time or outside paid labor if they engaged in childcare during earlier life stages; men with children are more likely to be in full-time employment. Women are more affected by early working life decisions – previous labor-market participation or a reduction in working hours due to childcare obligations have a greater impact on late working life. A North–South divide in Europe – it is mostly in southern and western Europe that women’s domestic work or part-time employment prevents full-time employment in late working life, but in northern Europe, female employment in late working life is barely affected by previous family obligations. This research on gendered late-working-life trajectories is part of the research programme EIWO. Schmitz, W., Naegele, L., Frerichs, F., & Ellwardt, L. Flagg, Melissa, and Zachary Arnold. A New Institutional Approach to Research Security in the United States: Defending a Diverse R&D Ecosystem. Center for Security and Emerging Technology, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51593/20200051.

Abstract:
U.S. research security requires trust and collaboration between those conducting R&D and the federal government. Most R&D takes place in the private sector, outside of government authority and control, and researchers are wary of federal government or law enforcement involvement in their work. Despite these challenges, as adversaries work to extract science, technology, data and know-how from the United States, the U.S. government is pursuing an ambitious research security initiative. In order to secure the 78 percent of U.S. R&D funded outside the government, authors Melissa Flagg and Zachary Arnold propose a new, public-private research security clearinghouse, with leadership from academia, business, philanthropy, and government and a presence in the most active R&D hubs across the United States.

Leis and Hopkins. L52013 Mechanical Damage Gaps Analysis. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010248.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipelines fail due to various causes. The "outside forces" incident category includes acts of man (such as impact damage by earth moving machinery) but it also embraces acts of nature. Outside forces has been the dominant incident category in most Western World oil and gas transmission pipeline systems. Incidents due to outside forces have been the leading cause of significant failures on transmission pipelines in the USA since formal record keeping and trend analysis of incidents began in the 1970's. This trend remains currently, with these results reflecting incident experience for 2002. While this situation is not expected to change in the near term, the recent data from 2002 indicate corrosion is overtaking outside force as the main failure cause. The objectives of this report are to evaluate current state of knowledge concerning assessment and management of mechanical damage to pipelines, and identify outstanding issues or gaps to be addressed by the industry. Motivation for such an evaluation and gaps analysis lies in several factors, including much work done has been recently done worldwide. Third-party damage is typically the largest incident category, with the largest consequences, and pending regulatory actions are consequence based, and will require a management strategy to deal with mechanical damage.

Bommer, Paul. PR-427-12701-R01 Review of Mechanisms That Lead to Well Cement Deterioration. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011464.

Full text
Abstract:
This research report examines the reasons cement used in wells can deteriorate and fail. If the cement fails a leak pathway can form through which fluids can flow outside the well casing from one zone in the well to another and potentially reach the surface. The wells in question in this study are product storage wells, most notably used for natural gas storage, although the discussion can in general apply to any well. A review of general storage well use and construction are the lead in to the work.

McGaughy. L51678 Repair Welding on the Residual Stress Distribution and Fracture Toughness in Girth Welds. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 1993. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010346.

Full text
Abstract:
This program completes a 2-year study investigating the effects of SMAW repair welding on the residual stress distribution and fracture toughness of pipeline girth welds. This second year of work, under contract PR-185-9104, has studied double part-wall, standard full-wall and modified full-wall repairs on GMA fabricated girth welds. The modified repair used a stringer bead technique in an effort to enhance the toughness of the repair region. The results of this study indicated the repair welds produced yield magnitude axial residual stresses on the inside and outside pipe surfaces. The hoop residual stresses were approximately equal to half-yield magnitude the inside surface while they were nearly zero in the weld on the outside surface of the pipe. The stress distributions were nearly identical regardless of the type of repair. Fracture toughness was reduced in the double part-wall and standard full-wall repairs. However, the modified full-wall repair produced toughness levels which exceeded the toughness of the original girth weld. This was attributed to grain refinement in the modified repair produced by the stringer bead technique.

Abstract:
This paper aims to point out the proposals presented to the governments, launched by the organizations working with migratory issues and human rights, whenever a meeting related to these issues has taken place in South America. In addition, this paper will also present the most relevant conclusions reached by South American governments in several annual conferences on migration issues. The most important topics are: human rights, the regularization of regional illegal migrant's migratory situation, the ratification of the "Convention of Workers and Families", national migratory policies, follow-ups on the migrants inside and outside the region, remittances, work and professional reinsertion of former migrants, brain drain, among others.
