Cortright, Holland Marie Cummings. "Social Fulfillment Outside of Work and its Effects on At-work Issues." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/146068.

Full text
Abstract:
Much research has been compiled on how relationships at work affect job performance, motivation, and satisfaction. There has been very limited research, however, on whether or not relationships outside of work also affect these factors. This thesis will attempt to explore previous research findings and how they may relate to this topic. It will also delve into the findings of the primary research completed during this study, and will cover the results and conclusions this research brought about. Results indicate that people may act outside of their stereotypical need for affiliation role based on how socially fulfilled they are. Results also indicate that those who are emotionally overloaded by the number of relationships in their life may have lower job performance, satisfaction, and motivation. Also supported was the discovery that there is a curvilinear relationship to the number of relationships a person has outside of work and their job satisfaction. This thesis will cover all of these topics and findings and attempt to relate them in a practical manner to both people and organizations.

Williams, Beulah Lavell. "Impact of Work-Related Electronic Communications Behavior Outside of Normal Working Hours." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6958.

Full text
Abstract:
Employers' reliance on asynchronous electronic communications, connective technology devices, and remote work arrangements has led employees to feel preoccupied with staying connected after-hours to be responsive to work-related demands. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of professional workers who coped with constant pressure to monitor and immediately respond to work-related electronic communications during nonwork hours. The conceptual framework was supported by boundary and border theory and the constructs of work-life balance, flexible work arrangements, information and communication technology. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 16 professional workers near Washington, DC. Moustakas's modified van Kaam method was used to analyze, code, and organize data. Six themes emerged: mobilize or immobilize, manage expectations, safeguard personal time, work-life fusion, work engagement, and psychological outcomes. Findings revealed that professional workers felt a sense of urgency to reply to work-related e-mails and text messages outside of their regularly scheduled work hours and felt a sense of professional obligation to be available after-hours. Results may be used to shape and support positive social change through effective organizational change programs for technology-related work-life imbalances, thereby benefiting employers and employees.

Reiman, A. (Arto). "Holistic work system design and management:— a participatory development approach to delivery truck drivers’ work outside the cab." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2013. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526202198.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The road freight transport industry as a labour-intensive sector is dependent on the work ability and well-being at work of employees. The majority of the occupational accidents are related to work phases outside the cab. These work phases, which are performed in various different work environments, contain several kinds of ergonomic discomforts. This poses complex challenges for the employers from a safety and productivity point of view. The framework of this thesis is based on the foundations of ergonomics and design science. The main objective was to provide knowledge that can be implemented into the design and management of work systems for local and short haul delivery operations. Material was obtained from two sources. A meta-synthesis was performed to frame holistic management in a human perspective. Furthermore, additional in-depth design knowledge was obtained through participatory ergonomics video analyses on drivers’ work outside the cab. Video analyses resulted in 262 identifications of demanding work situations where ergonomic discomforts and risks of accidents occurred. Sudden over-exertions and strains, falls and slips as well as losing control of work equipment were the most common deviations related to drivers’ work outside the cab and mainly related to physical activities of movement and carrying by hand. The majority of the work situations identified were performed in cargo spaces or elsewhere within the truck structure or at premises and yards that are administered by the customers or other stakeholders. In these environments, drivers tend to perform their work manually or using different types of work equipment. This thesis provides new in-depth knowledge on drivers’ work outside the cab. The results show that different stakeholders can contribute to drivers’ work systems. The knowledge provided by drivers and other stakeholders can be applied to holistic design and management processes at company level. Moreover, the knowledge can also be applied to broader value chain design and management processes<br>Tiivistelmä Tieliikenteen tavarankuljetus työvoimavaltaisena toimialana on riippuvainen henkilöstön työkyvystä ja -hyvinvoinnista. Suurin osa tapaturmista liittyy työtehtäviin ohjaamon ulkopuolella. Materiaali koostui kahdesta osiosta.

Massu, Justine. "Thinking outside the boss : understanding managers' engagement in creative actions." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCB208/document.

Abstract:
In 2010, 1,500 Chief Executive Officers identified managers' creativity as the most crucial factor for future organizational success. However, managers' engagement in creative actions is constantly competing with routine behaviors that imply less risk taking, uncertainty and possibility of failure. This dissertation explores three potential avenues to understand managers' decisions to engage in creative actions. The first one focuses on managers' conceptions of creativity and innovation as antecedents of their own creative behaviors and their evaluation of creative managers and managerial practices. The second avenue examines how creative actions result from a decision-making process that evaluates the relevance of creativity in specific situations and takes into account individual predispositions and organizational characteristics. The third avenue investigates the extent to which a fit or misfit between managers and their organizations can trigger creative behaviors. This research reaffirms the relevance of the multivariate and interactionnist approaches to organizational creativity. It highlights also the importance of considering managers' evaluation of the appropriateness and effectiveness of specific creative actions in specific situations. Finally, most research tends to conceive that managerial creativity emerges from positive and encouraging circumstances. In contrast, the present research highlights that managerial creativity can emerge as a response to situations of misfit and dissatisfaction

Hall, Stephen Alexander. "Outside the gate : a study of Nietzsche's project of revaluation as mediated via the work of D.H. Lawrence." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/72062/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to illuminate in a novel and original manner the political and ethical character of Nietzche's project of revaluation and to demonstrate its continued import and significance for thinking on culture and society today. In order to achieve this, I have placed Nietzsche's work in relation to the fiction, poetry, and prose of D.H. Lawrence, who, it is argued, provides the most imaginative and vital development of the above. In turn, Lawrence's thinking is exposed to more recent theoretical developments, thereby giving a good indication of the wider philosophical and political traditions within which the Nietzschean narrative of revaluation is produced, circulated, and maintained - and those against which it moves. It is argued that this narrative, although now widely studied and debated, remains an illicit and marginalized form of philosophical discourse; one that is often derided and condemned by those whose own narratives form the dominant and legitimized language games within modern liberal society. Nietzsche's philosophy thus provides a vital counter-discourse which allows things to be said and voices to be heard that few other forms of philosophical discourse dare to allow. It is crucial, therefore, that such a text be explored, developed, and enabled to perform a role in as wide a social arena as possible. In attempting to do this over the course of the five chapters that make up the work, several of the major themes and concerns of Nietzschean and post-Nietzschean philosophy, such as power and the reconfiguration of the subject, are examined at length and the thesis provides an exciting contribution both to Nietzsche studies and to the critical work on Lawrence, demonstrating the validity of Foucault's contention that the relation between philosophy, literature, and politics is permanent and fundamental. It is concluded that Nietzsche's and Lawrence's political thinking is of most interest and use to us today when it becomes molecularized and minoritarianized; a politics of desire that frees itself from molar ambition and ascetic militancy, and, perhaps, opens the way not to fascism as is often feared, but, on the contrary, to a radically new notion of democracy: the democracy of touch.

Abstract:
<p>Since the 1950’s medial resources have accelerated at an apparent pace. The access to several TV channels, to the Internet and to cell phones has increased and is available almost every student. In the society of today young people are exposed to media technology everywhere. It is apparent that children as well as adolescents and adults are affected by television, music, the Internet in one way or the other. The aim of this essay was to investigate if students think that TV, music and the Internet affect their English language learning outside the classroom. Furthermore, the purpose was also to see in what ways their teachers use these kinds of media recourses.</p><p>Questionnaires were handed out to three ninth grade classes (56 students) and interviews were made with their English teachers. The investigations showed that the majority of the students thought that they learned a lot outside of the school, mostly from TV and films. They claimed that they learned things like words, phrases and pronunciations.</p><p>Two of the three teachers who were interviewed used TV and music frequently in their teaching because they thought it was of importance to their students’ different learning styles, while the third teacher rarely used any of the resources mentioned above. Even though their methods differed they were of the same opinion that TV, music and the Internet have a huge impact on their students.</p>

Svensson, Nina. "Do you dare to think outside the box? : Impacts of alcohol, negative affect and evaluation apprehension on inhibition of creative performance."

Full text
Abstract:
Conditions relating to evaluation apprehension, alcohol and affect were investigated in relation to creative performance. Study I compared group work with individual work, and control conditions were compared with de Bono creativity-enhancing techniques. Study II studied the effect of alcohol and emotional-enhancing film material on primary-secondary process relations and creative performance. Study III explored experiences of working on a creative task after receiving negative feedback. Study IV investigated the relationship between fear of evaluation and creative performance. Study I showed higher scores on different measures of creative performance for group work, while individual work showed higher total fluency scores. Further, de Bono technique conditions showed lower fluency and lower flexibility. Study II showed signs of decreased creative performance after the intake of alcohol, and signs of increased primary process thinking but no effect of on creative performance after emotional enhancement. Study III showed that stress, fear of producing ‘incorrect’ responses and low self-efficacy were inhibiting factors on creative performance. Study IV showed that fear of evaluation was related to a lower self-efficacy, higher degree of worry, and higher degree of self-censorship. Further, Study IV showed that fear of negative evaluation had a positive relation to number of ideas produced, but no relation to quality of ideas. Additionally, support for creativity showed positive relations to both number of ideas produced and quality of ideas.<br>Creativity is desired in many situations. Areas where creativity is needed include innovation, product development and artistic performance. Further, creative activities are connected with joy and pleasure for the individual. However, many of us are struggling when it comes to creative performance, and it is considered hard to be creative. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate inhibition of creative performance. The results of the four papers comprised in the thesis suggest that group work have an effect on the creative process, explicit instructions may narrow down possible solutions for a problem, alcohol may inhibit creative performance and evaluation apprehension is related to self-censorship of ideas. Further, support for creativity showed positive relations with both quantity and quality of ideas. The main conclusion of the thesis is that individuals may withhold ideas in fear of others’ reactions. Therefore, creative performance is not only a question of ability, but also a question of willingness to communicate.

Abstract:
In Sweden today, the English language is a part of our everyday lives. This means that from very young ages, children encounter the language in many different ways, media being one of the most common. This thesis aims to research if and how teachers in F-3 include this type of English in their teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). In particular, the focus is to gain knowledge of how music/songs are being used in the classroom, and if the teachers incorporate the music that the pupils listen to in their spare time when working with music/songs. Their attitudes towards doing this is what this thesis is interested in. An empirical study was carried out with the use of interviews as data collecting method. A total of six lower primary school teachers (grades 1-3) spread out geographically in Sweden were interviewed. The results show that teachers report that they are aware of the many places where pupils encounter English, but only one of the teachers incorporate this in teaching EFL. However, the others do seem positive towards working with this and they mention many benefits in doing so. When it comes to music and songs, all teachers work with this in the subject, but once again five out of six do not include the songs that the pupils listen to, except when they in some cases pick something up in the moment. Again, even though some difficulties are mentioned, they seem positive towards this and they believe there is a possibility in including this in their teaching of EFL. However, as seen in the conclusion, time seems to be a big issue for doing so.<br><p>Engelska</p>

Abstract:
Thesis (MPA) --University of Limpopo, 2018<br>South African Universities are faced with the pandemic issues of student‟s through-put. The postgraduate intake at higher education doesn‟t correspond with the completion rate. South Africa is relatively the lowest in higher education success rate compared to other countries. This study aimed at investigating factors contributing to postgraduate students through-put at Turfloop Graduate School of Leadership (TGSL), in the University of Limpopo. This study adopted a quantitative descriptive research design. Questionnaire were utilised to collect data from master‟s students and academic staff at TGSL. Data was gathered through structured questionnaire from 42 master‟s students. Semi-structured questionnaire were used to gather data from five experienced academic staff members. The study utilised simple random sampling and judgemental or purposive sampling. Descriptive analysis was used and data was analysed using Statistical package for social science (SPSS). The findings reveal that the number of students graduating from the three programmes within TGSL is increasing from time to time suggesting a decline in supervision backlog. The study indicated that most master‟s students take more than maximum duration of three years to complete their study as these students have completed their modules (course work) and remain with research project. Despite these and other academic support provided by the university, masters students encounter certain challenges that influence their academic performance. The major factors influencing through-put include: Lack of commitment; personal issues such as workload; lack of support from spouse and family members and poor time management; lack of personal interest and hard work on the part of students; lack of focus; poor time management; inadequate writing skills; lack of time. Most students are working and may not have adequate time to consult their supervisors. This study has made recommendations to further improve master‟s students‟ through-put. Based on the findings and conclusions of the study it is recommended that students should be self-disciplined; committed to their studies. Students should put more effort on their mini-dissertation and attend the writing retreats organised by the university to improve their writing skills.

Frizzell, Rebecca E. "Manufacturing satisfaction with work-family balance: the effects of employee type, technology use, & life role salience." Diss., Kansas State University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/20447.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy<br>Psychological Sciences<br>Patrick A. Knight<br>Satisfaction with work-family balance is a relatively new construct that differs from other work-life constructs in several ways: it is not focused on conflict between work/family domains, does not include cross-domain transfer processes, has no directional implications, and is not multidimensional. The current study has three purposes: 1. Examine work-family balance issues for both blue-collar and white-collar employees, as the literature has focused mainly on white-collar employees. 2. Examine relationship between technology and satisfaction with work-family balance. 3. Assess how role salience influences satisfaction with work-family balance. Participants were recruited and compensated for completing a 60 item online survey via Qualtrics. Blue-collar participants were recruited from manufacturing industries, while no industry was specified for white-collar employees. The sample consisted of 210 participants (105 blue-collar, 105 white-collar). Several checks were included throughout the survey to ensure data quality. Two hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. The first regression revealed that boundary control and autonomy predict satisfaction with work-family balance, while employee type and boundary interruptions do not. Boundary control, family identity, and stress significantly predicted satisfaction with work-family balance in the second regression, while boundary interruptions, work identity, hours worked, and technology use did not. Results indicate white-collar workers have higher satisfaction with work-family balance, lower stress, and lower turnover intentions compared to blue-collar workers. Results also reveal that technology use to complete work outside of work hours is significantly and positively related to stress. Nearly half of participants report feeling expected to utilize technology to complete work outside of work hours. In addition, while it was hypothesized that those higher on family identity would have lower satisfaction with work-family balance when they used technology outside of work hours, worked longer hours, and had more frequent boundary interruptions than would those lower on family identity, the opposite effect was found for each of these variables. Implications of the study include: 1. Organizations may improve employee satisfaction with work-family balance by increasing autonomy and boundary control. 2. Employees may improve satisfaction with work-family balance by taking time to de-stress from work and limiting use of technology to complete work outside of work hours.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to spread light on Swedish employment officer's view on the possibilities for immigrants from outside the Europe to get a job in Sweden. The study is limited to include immigrants who are covered by the Swedish law SFS 2010:197. They have the rights to take part in work related activities and internship within a year from the day they got their permanent recidence permit. They are being seen as newly arrived from two years after the day they register at a Swedish employment office. A qualitative method has been used and the results are based on four interviews with employment officers at the Swedish employment service Arbetsförmedlingen. The picture given by the employment officers show that the Swedish language is the biggest obstacle, but also the prerequisite to get a job. Highly educated immigrants have bigger chances to get a job with in their profession. Immigrants with no or low education have more difficulties to get a job and more often get low wage-jobs. Work experience is also described as increasing the chances to get a job. The group which has the hardest time finding a job is newly arrived immigrants who are women, and illiterate. Contributions from the society is described as increasing the prerequisite to get a job and keep it. Qualifications acquired in Sweden seems to increase the possibilities to get a job, rather than qualifications acquired outside the EU. If discrimination plays a role is hard to tell since the respondants chose to not get into this subject.

Lodin, Emilia.

Full text
Abstract:
According to Swedish law, limited companies must have a board. However, it differs in the extent to which the board is involved in a company´s strategic work and how business owners relate to its function. In small and medium-sized enterprises, the board seldom fills any real function. As the company grows, it becomes difficult for one person alone to manage and control the company, leading to an increasing need for a working board. Previous research shows that business owner's personal goals often determine the strategic direction of small and medium-sized enterprises. In order to meet existing demands, business owners need to understand the board´s role and the benefits of strategic work. The purpose of the study is, from a business perspective, to contribute knowledge about board work in small and medium-sized enterprises and to examine the business owners' attitudes toward the functioning of the board. The study's empirical data has been collected from a qualitative data collection, in the form of semi-structured interviews with four business owners from three different small and medium-sized enterprises. The theoretical framework involves the subject corporate governance and the aspects that are considered important for a successful board work. The study concludes that awareness regarding board work, is relatively low among business owners of small and medium-sized enterprises, which means that the board is not being used effectively. The level of knowledge of the business owner also controls whether the board is considered as important in their own company, and how the board works. Another conclusion drawn is that the business owner's personal goals affect his attitude towards the board. If personal goals include growth, the business owner has a more positive attitude towards a working board. Furthermore, a positive attitude towards a working board increases the probability that the business owner also has a positive attitude towards outside directors in the board.

Abstract:
Today’s primary school pupils encounter English in a wide variety of ways through the use of various forms of media. This thesis aims to research how the very youngest pupils in the Swedish primary school encounter the English language in their time outside of school and whether or not it has any impact on how they relate to the subject in school. Teachers’ views on their pupils’ habits will also be compared, as well as whether they see encounters outside the classroom as having any visible effects on the pupils. Through the use of interviews with both seven- to eight-year-old pupils and teachers, it was possible to find common forms of extramural English (EE) among the pupils, but little evidence it contributed to their views on English at school. Teachers were largely aware of their pupils’ interests and were positive towards using EE content in class, but did not feel it was possible to do so.<br><p>Engelska</p>

Full text
Abstract:
When the National Weather Service (NWS) issues a tornado warning, the alert is rapidly and widely disseminated to individuals in the general area of the warning. Historically, the assumption has been that a false-negative warning perception (i.e., when someone located within a warning polygon does not believe they have received a tornado warning) carries a higher cost than a false-positive warning perception (i.e., when someone located outside the warning area believes they have received a warning). While many studies investigate tornado warning false alarms (i.e., when the NWS issues a tornado warning, but a tornado does not actually occur), less work focuses on studying individuals outside of the warning polygon bounds who believe they received a warning (i.e., false-positive perceptions). This work attempts to quantify the occurrence of false-positive perceptions and possible factors associated with the rate of occurrence. Following two separate storm events, Oklahomans were asked whether they perceived a tornado warning. Their geolocated responses were then compared to issued warning polygons. Individuals closer to tornado warnings or within a different type of warning (e.g., a severe thunderstorm warning) are more likely to report a false-positive perception than those farther away or outside of other hazard warnings. Further work is needed to understand the rate of false-positive perceptions across different hazards and how this may influence warning response and trust in the National Weather Service.

Valluru, Charan T. "The subcontractor safety problem: hidden, variable, and outsider work." Thesis, Griffith University, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/414914.

Full text
Abstract:
The continued rise of non-standard forms of employment, including increased use of subcontractors, has focused industry and research attention on how to manage the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) of subcontractor employees. Existing measures to mitigate OHS risk appear to be less effective in the case of subcontractor employees as they are shaped by principal contractors and regulatory bodies in isolation to the realities of the non-standard nature of subcontractor work. From this point of view, in order to successfully manage subcontractor OHS risk, it is necessary to explore OHS risk as a perceived uncertainty that is constructed by the various stakeholders ((1) Principal Contractor and Subcontractor management, (2) Regulator, and (3) Subcontractor employees) based on their understanding of subcontractor work. The thesis is structured as a series of three studies, each addressing a different stakeholder point of view. The first study utilises focus groups to understand the reasons behind subcontractor OHS risk from the viewpoint of the managements of principal contractors and subcontractors. The second study utilises accident case studies to explore the viewpoint of the regulator. The third study is a six-month ethnography in an Australian utility organisation where data was collected through participant observations and 17 semi structured interviews with both the principal contractor and subcontractor employees to identify how the precarious nature of subcontractor work impacts their perception of OHS risk. A key question throughout this work was why do some subcontractors experience significantly higher OHS risk than others? To explain this, the thesis introduces the notion of ‘standing’. Standing is the informal hierarchical position of a subcontractor employee. This includes concepts previously discussed in the literature such as employee safety voice, injury reporting, and authority to stop work, but also factors such as job autonomy, and invoked paternalism from Principal Contractor/Client co-workers. The thesis concludes that standing contributes to subcontractor OHS risk through its connection to the precariousness of subcontractor work. The results have further implications towards the design of more well-rounded solutions to improve subcontractor OHS that take the nature of the work into consideration.<br>Thesis (PhD Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<br>School of Hum, Lang & Soc Sc<br>Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology<br>Full Text

Abstract:
Children today encounter the English language on a wide scale, even outside the school walls. As they are exposed to various forms of English language input, they inevitably pick up a certain level of proficiency, which they can later use on their own. This study aims to more precisely research through which mediums English learners in primary school worldwide tend to encounter English the most, as well as how engaging in English activities outside the classroom might affect their English proficiency. By studying prior research on the subject through content analysis, it was found that, while there are some regional differences in terms of prevalence, children mainly encounter English through television, music, and computer games. It was also found that many children who had never before received any English training still possessed a level of English proficiency. These findings shed light on the importance of input for language acquisition as well as how children’s extramural interests can be of importance in the classroom setting.

Pesenti, Claudio <1987&gt. "The Figure of the Outsider in Richard Wright's Major Works." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/3266.

Full text
Abstract:
The Man Who Lived Underground (1942).

Abstract:
The usage of agency social workers in Sweden have increased during the past few decades and there is a lack of research on this topic. This study aims to describe how the agency social workers experience the work within the swedish social services and how it affects their role with regards to their deviant type of employment. The study is comprised of qualitative interviews with seven agency social workers who have differentiated experience in social services assignments. The results of the study is based on thematic analysis and Becker’s theory of outsiders. The results show that the agency social workers don’t necessarily regard themselves as outsiders in a negative sense, but rather in a positive way. However, they tend to use strategies to avoid behaviour that can appear deviant and therefore avoid being labelled as outsiders. This includes for instance living up to both formal and informal expectations, being careful when it comes to criticizing the hiring organisation and being cautious in their involvement in social relationships to the permanent staff. Opposed to previous studies, these results indicate that the agency social workers expresses more positive experiences in relation to the hiring organisation.

Abstract:
Appalachian clients are often ‘invisible’ within the majority culture and possess characteristics unique to the region that must be considered within the counseling relationship (Tang & Russ, 2007). Individuals in Appalachia have higher incidences of certain mental health disorders and substance use as compared to the national average (Appalachian Regional Commission [ARC], 2008). Although the need for mental health services is evident, limited research exists to inform mental health professionals how to deliver culturally competent interventions to build a working alliance with Appalachian clients. The authors will discuss a framework for mental health professionals to develop a strong working alliance through a review of the cultural distinctions of Appalachian individuals, culturally appropriate counseling interventions, and a case illustration.

Mehrotra, Meeta. "Triple Outsiders: Gender and Ethnic Identity Among Asian Indian Immigrants." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/11117.

Full text
Abstract:
This study uses literature on identity work to examine the gender similarities and differences in the ethnic identity work that Asian Indian immigrants to the United States do. It also looks at the changes Indian immigrants' understanding of themselves as Indian men/women due to migration. Interviews with thirty-eight first generation Asian Indian immigrants reveal that while food, clothing, language, and family roles are significant means of expressing ethnic identity, men and women differ in the kind of identity work they perform. Migration also changes men and women's family and work responsibilities, and thereby their social networks. This impacts their identity as Indian men and women in the United States. The study uses these findings to critique the ethnicity paradigm, especially the perspectives of assimilation, which calls for immigrants to adopt the ways of the dominant group, and pluralism, which advocates that immigrants retain their cultural practices and ethnic identities but treats ethnic groups as monoliths. Both the assimilationist and the pluralist models assume that men and women experience the process of migration and adaptation to the new context in similar ways. However, adaptation is a process that occurs differently by gender, and gender relations can create obstacles to assimilation. These models therefore need to be revised to pay greater attention to the varied experiences within groups, based on gender, and other identities such as age and social class.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:
Some of the strongest predictors of voting for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election were Christian nationalism and antipathy toward Muslims and immigrants. We examine the interrelated influence of these three factors on Americans’ intentions to vote for Trump in 2020. Consistent with previous research, Christian nationalism and Islamophobia remained strong and significant predictors of intention to vote for Trump; however, the effect of xenophobia was stronger. Further, xenophobia and Islamophobia significantly and substantially mediated the effects of Christian nationalism. Consequently, though Christian nationalism remains theoretically and empirically distinct as a cultural framework, its influence on intending to vote for Trump in 2020 is intimately connected to fears about ethnoracial outsiders. In the penultimate year before Trump’s reelection campaign, the strongest predictors of supporting Trump, in order of magnitude, were political party, xenophobia, identifying as African American (negative), political ideology, Christian nationalism, and Islamophobia.

Abstract:
The dual aim of this thesis is to analyze the individual and collective activity of teachers, parents, pupil support workers and children when dealing with school assignments and to envisage the conditions for the transformation of this practice. This study draws on the "course-of-action" research program and involved a) using video recordings and self-confrontation sessions to analyze the activity of the participants in two case studies pertaining to school assignment situations; one case study was conducted in the classroom and during extracurricular activities the other in the classroom and at home; b) designing a training environment for teachers, parents and support workers based on video artifacts which were created using data collected at the outset; c) implementing this training environment by confronting the participants with the video artifacts and analyzing their activity. The results we examined refer to the empirical and the technological aspects of the research. As far as the empirical aspect is concerned, the results show that despite the spatial and temporal separation of the situations, collective dimensions to the school assignment activity could be identified relating to the circulation of the children and the technical devices. The latter acted as “interfaces” making it possible to articulate the activity of the adults. This has enabled us to demonstrate: a) the existence of a culture shared by teachers, parents and pupil support workers which partially explains the durability of the practice of school assignments; b) cultural elements specific to each category of actors; c) certain asymmetries given that the teacher’s activity has a much greater influence on the collective action than the activity of the other adults; d) difficulties experienced by parents and pupil support workers when supervising the children’s work; e) a strong influence of the technical devices on the dynamics of the collective action. In light of these observations, we consider that the situations contributed very little to enhancing the children’s learning potential. The technological aspect involved identifying the training environment’s potential for helping the actors to appropriate the collective dimensions of their activity and to envisage other situations which would be more conducive to learning. To do this, their activity was analyzed during a confrontation with the episode of the video artifact referring to a temporal and spatial setting that, in practice, they did not usually have access to. The results highlight cognitive processes indicating that the participants had become more aware of the collective dimensions of the activity. At the same time, it emerged that the training environment had a limited potential for inciting these same actors to imagine new actions. These results, analyzed in relation to the specificities of the artifacts, the use made of them and the culture of the actors have opened up new perspectives for the transformation of the training environment

Abstract:
Temporary Work Agencies (TWAs) are an example of a trend towards flexibility in the labour market. By hiring staff from TWAs organisations can keep their staff numbers down. This however, refers to the client companies´ use or temps, and omits the intermediary, the TWA, which also needs various flexibility strategies in its activities. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the organising of TWAs supply of manpower to different clients companies, and how managers and temps experience their terms of employment, working conditions and relationships with regular employees at the client companies. Two qualitative case studies were conducted. In study one, interviews have been carried out with managers and temps in a TWA and a client company in Jämtland. In the second study, managers and temps in an international TWA in Sweden were interviewed. The results show that both managers and temps work under complex conditions and demands on flexibility. The managers shall, by flexible prioritising, satisfy demands from the TWA on profitability, demands from client companies´ for an adaptable workforce and temps need of employment and community. The results also indicate that temps have to balance between a position as stranger and outsider, and handle insecurity of the assignments duration and spatial location. They have to be able to manoeuvre between the power inequalities, stigmatisation and exclusion they encounter in working conditions and social interactions in client companies. To handle such situations the ideal temp and manager have to be able to vary between distance and nearness in spatiality and indifference and involvement in social relations.

Abstract:
This study uses concepts from network science to analyze the agency of outsider characters who cause change or disruption without necessarily securing economic or political power for themselves. Network science as theorized by thinkers like Duncan Watts (Six Degrees, 2003) and Albert-Laszlo Barabasi (Linked, 2002) explains social networks in terms of social structures: clusters of people, bridges between them, pathways through them. Michel Foucault (The Archaeology of Knowledge, 1971) suggests that new notions must enter public or personal awareness on "surfaces of emergence"—institutions like families and social groups. Michel de Certeau (The Practice of Everyday Life, 1974) looks at inventive ways that users repurpose products, both industrial and cultural, and so become "secondary producers." To analyze the influential-outsider agency of the fictional characters featured in this study, I theorize the clusters, bridges, and pathways of network science as surfaces of emergence on which "secondary productions" can appear and then spread through a social network. The introductory chapter explores and explains the general application of network science to literary criticism. In subsequent chapters, I use a networks-based approach to examine the agency of William Dean Howells's Tom Corey (The Rise of Silas Lapham, 1884), F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby (The Great Gatsby, 1925), Joseph Heller's Milo Minderbinder (Catch-22, 1961), Thomas Pynchon's Pierce Inverarity (The Crying of Lot 49, 1965), and William Gibson's Cayce Pollard (Pattern Recognition, 2003). These characters do unusual things with and from the subject positions in which they find themselves, and—whether or not they are or remain marginalized characters in their social systems—they are innovative and influential in ways that other characters do not understand or anticipate. All five novels depict the diffusion of innovative ideas and practices as a process of unplanned, non-coercive social negotiation, where innovation can originate with any person or group of people in the social network and is dependent on the complex interaction of liminal notions and mainstream thinking. The networking approach to these novels clarifies the ways that their authors have imagined social networks to function and the particular interactions they have imagined to lead to change or disruption.<br>Department of English

Abstract:

Abstract:
<p>The purpose of this examination paper is to get an understanding as an upcoming teacher about how friends make an important impact on children’s identity development in school, their choice of friends circle and what kind of groups there can occur among them. With a deeper comprehension of these circumstances should an educationalist be more considerate and adapt his or hers education to prevent negative group formations and to be an outsider. To achieve my results I used a qualitative research method where I through observation handpicked eight students from upper level of compulsory school with different friend circles from two classes for further interviews. Beside this I observed students in their school environment for three days. My conclusion by this research is that, the society, the school and the home are three very important factors that make big impact on children’s identity development. Even friendship has an important role on their development. Children choose their friends though common interest which can lead to group formations where negative group formations can occur.</p>

Mårtensson, Gunilla. "The Insider and Outsider Perspective : Clinical importance of agreement between patients and nurses in cancer care concerning patients’ emotional distress, coping resources and quality of life." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Vårdvetenskap, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-101337.

Abstract:
Background: It is a well-known phenomenon that nurses and other oncology staff have a tendency to ascribe patients with cancer more problems and suffering than the patients themselves report. Aim: The overall aim of the present thesis was therefore to gain increased knowledge and understanding of dis/agreement between patients with cancer and nurses regarding their perception of patients’ situation and of the importance of patient-nurse dis/agreement in clinical practice. Methods: A prospective comparative design was used. Data were collected from a sample of 90 consecutively recruited patient-nurse pairs. Each pair consisted of a patient with cancer, newly admitted to a ward, and a nurse responsible for that patient’s care. Data were collected from the pairs with corresponding self-administrated questionnaires on two occasions: directly after the admission interview and on the patient’s third day on the ward. Results: At the group level, a distinct pattern was shown in which nurses ascribed the patients more emotional distress, less coping resources and a lower quality of life than the patients themselves reported. In short, the results revealed the following clinical importance of patient-nurse dis/agreement. With respect to how nurses act in relation to their perceptions of patients’ emotional distress, patient-nurse dis/agreement did not seem to be important; with few exceptions, nurses’ implemented care did not differ when it was directed at more as compared to less distressed patients. Further, nurses’ general tendency to overestimate cancer patients’ problems and suffering had no influence on patients’ satisfaction with received care and nurses’ satisfaction with provided care. However, patients cared for by nurses who underestimated their level of depression were less satisfied with those nurses’ care. In addition, the more frequently the nurse had implemented care characterized by a trusting relationship, the higher patients’ and nurses’ satisfaction with received/provided care. Conclusions: Initial patient-nurse dis/agreement concerning patients’ situation appears to be of little significance to nurses’ caring behaviour and to patients’ and nurses’ subsequent evaluation of received and provided care.

Byrge, Matthew Israel. "Black and White on Black: Whiteness and Masculinity in the Works of Three Australian Writers - Thomas Keneally, Colin Thiele, and Patrick White." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2010. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1717.

Full text
Abstract:
White depictions of Aborigines in literature have generally been culturally biased. In this study I explore four depictions of Indigenous Australians by white Australian writers. Thomas Keneally's The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1972) depicts a half-caste Aborigine's attempt to enter white society in a racially-antipathetic world that precipitates his ruin. Children's author Colin Thiele develops friendships between white and Aboriginal children in frightening and dangerous landscapes in both Storm Boy (1963) and Fire in the Stone (1973). Nobel laureate Patrick White sets A Fringe of Leaves (1976) in a world in which Ellen Roxburgh's quest for freedom comes only through her captivity by the Aborigines. I use whiteness and masculinity studies as theoretical frameworks in my analysis of these depictions. As invisibility and ordinariness are endemic to white and masculine actions, interrogating these ideological constructions aids in facilitating a better awareness of the racialized stereotypes that exist in Indigenous representations.
