ABSTRACT: This paper examines whether outstanding employee stock options (ESOs), which represent the firm’s contractual obligation to deliver shares upon ESO exercise, affect firms’ credit ratings. I hypothesize that outstanding ESOs play two information roles—(1) suggesting equity infusion, and (2) predicting share repurchases—that help credit-rating agencies evaluate the issuing company’s debt service ability. Consistent with these hypothesized roles, results indicate that the present values of expected cash proceeds and tax benefits from ESO exercise have favorable effects on credit ratings

AbstractClimate change is the greatest threat facing global natural and cultural heritage. All World Heritage (WH) properties will be impacted over the coming century, and our ability to adapt will often be limited. Yet climate change was a threat never envisioned by the drafters of the World Heritage Convention (WHC). This chapter considers how concepts central to the WHC may need to adapt to a rapidly changing world, to reflect three uncomfortable realities of the climate crisis and its impacts on heritage sites. Firstly, climate change is and will continue threatening and invalidating the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of many properties, and there may be little we can do to stop this. Secondly, climate change knows no borders and existing mechanisms may need to be rethought to reflect this. Thirdly, these challenges will, like climate change, disproportionately impact marginalised and indigenous communities in the Global South. It is suggested here that more precise and explicit guidance, which considers local climate modelling and an inclusive approach to values, within the existing proactive mechanisms of the WHC Operational Guidelines would result in a more consistent consideration of climate change impacts at WH properties, that reflects the spirit of the WHC.

AbstractIn recent years, many “living” cultural and urban landscapes on a large scale were inscribed on the World Heritage List. However, such complex World Heritage properties generate frequently challenges concerning their management due to transformations caused by to pressure to change. As a result, there is a need for new proactive systematic approaches to assess such transformations combining innovative technical solutions with a systematic approach to using attributes and values conveying their Outstanding Universal Value. Taking the World Heritage cultural landscape Upper Middle Rhine Valley as a case study, this paper investigates such a systematic instrument to monitor transformations and to assess their impact on the OUV and integrity of UNESCO World Heritage properties. It is concluded that such systematic technical instruments can be helpful to support strategies for an integrated management combining preservation and sustainable development. However, an in-depth theoretical knowledge of sites’ OUVs and attributes and values related thereby, as well as a sound integration in existing legislative frameworks and the participation of stakeholders on various levels is indispensable to guarantee their full effectiveness.

Abstract:
AbstractAgainst the backdrop of recent crises, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and various armed conflicts, this chapter highlights the unique vulnerabilities of urban heritage and how these have been exacerbated by an over-simplified construction and commodification of heritage in the official discourse. The chapter reflects on issues and contentions about the definition of urban heritage and the prevailing focus on listing sites and monumental values, highlighting the frequent contrast between community narratives and outstanding universal value. Aside from challenges to its existence, urban heritage must also find ways to mediate between environmental, social, and economic pressures that World Heritage status imposes and the over-riding principles and objectives of the SDGs and other ambitious policies. This chapter proposes that addressing all these challenges is linked to a shift toward an inclusive human- and environment-focused definition of urban heritage, which leaves room for community statements of values, not just OUV. This chapter presents the case for recognizing urban heritage’s compendium of values to consolidate its sustainability and spread and minimise the risks. In short, it is a call to move away from heritage orthodoxy and toward sustainable urban heritage.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study addresses a crucial gap in current literature by examining the use of MyData-based health apps among individuals aged 50 and above in the UK and Nordic nations. With the advancement of personalized health technologies, understanding the factors influencing adoption among the elderly is essential. The research provides insights tailored to this demographic within the broader framework of digital health adoption. The primary scientific objective was to identify technological and health-related factors influencing the willingness of senior adults (50 and above) to use MyData-based preventive healthcare applications. The conditions for adoption, technological considerations, health-related variables, willingness to share MyData, and demographic variations were explored. Grounded in the Universal Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) and Health Protection Motivation components, the research employed a quantitative approach, integrating a new concept called sharing personal data into the framework. Data collection occurred through an online survey in the UK and the Nordic region, yielding 374 responses from the Nordic sample and 1165 from the UK sample, resulting in a cleaned dataset of 1016. Findings revealed the significance of willingness to share MyData for both the UK and Nordic regions, with performance expectancy emerging as an outstanding technological factor for the Nordic population, but not for the UK. Across nations and genders, self-efficacy is portrayed as a strong driver in health-related aspects. These contribute to academic knowledge and have societal value by guiding the development of digital health solutions for the elderly, ultimately improving their quality of life and health outcomes.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the relationship between insider share pledging and firms' dividend payout decisions. The dataset comprises of firms listed on NSE in India from 2013 to 2021. The authors employ multivariate regression analysis to test this relationship, and findings reveal that a 1% increase in share pledging (% of promoter's pledged shares to their holdings) correlates with a 0.87% increase in dividend payout. Similarly, a 1% increase in share pledging (% of the promoter's pledged shares to total outstanding shares of the firm) results in a substantial rise of 2.61% in dividend payout. The authors conduct PSM as a robustness check to validate the results. These results indicate that dividend payments serve as a credible mechanism to mitigate the adverse effects of pledging. This relationship is stronger in firms with better internal and external governance. Dividend payouts tend to increase with share pledging for firms with a higher percentage of independent directors and institutional shareholding. This study provides valuable insights for investors and policymakers.

According to the CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) Syllabus, apart from technical knowledge, labour markets are demanding engineers with personal, interpersonal and system building skills. The current educational system, however, is based on teaching theoretical concepts rather than on practical activities. Makerspaces could become a bridge between universities and industry, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) carriers. Makerspaces, also known as hackerspaces, hack labs and fab labs, are open-access spaces where a community shares tools, machines and knowled

Abstract Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs) face significant corrosion challenges in downhole environments due to high temperatures, pressures, and presence of corrosive fluids. These conditions can cause material degradation and severe damage, reducing equipment lifespan and impairing its performance. A Cable Deployed ESP (CDESP) is an alternative ESP deployment method, where the ESP is deployed by a specially designed cable with hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-resistant properties. This paper shares lessons learnt from three different CDESP installations. It discusses the findings and results of disma

Trajectory prediction with uncertainty is a critical and challenging task for autonomous driving. Nowadays, we can easily access sensor data represented in multiple views. However, cross-view consistency has not been evaluated by the existing models, which might lead to divergences between the multimodal predictions from different views. It is not practical and effective when the network does not comprehend the 3D scene, which could cause the downstream module in a dilemma. Instead, we predicts multimodal trajectories while maintaining cross-view consistency. We presented a cross-view trajecto

We document how, as Tesla’s CEO for 16 years, Musk has exercised strategic control to direct the transformation of the company from an uncertain startup to a global leader. Now that Tesla is profitable corporate predators (aka hedge-fund activists) may challenge Musk’s strategic control—a possibility of which the CEO is well aware. Using borrower-level data from FINCA, one of Peru's leading microfinance institutions (MFIs), this paper evaluates the effect on borrowers' access to credit of FINCA's decision to share information on individual outstanding debt records (positive information) as well as group default records (negative information). Since all borrowers were simultaneously exposed to the same policy, the paper develops a creative identification strategy that relies on the exogenous variation of the opening and closing dates of loan cycles across lending groups. What are the barriers that separate nations? While recent work provides intriguing clues, we have remarkably little concrete evidence as to the nature, size, and shape of barriers. This paper offers direct and indirect evidence on trade barriers, moving us toward a comprehensive geography of trade costs. There are three main contributions. One, we provide detailed data on freight rates for a number of importers. Rates vary substantially over exporters, and aggregate expenditures on freight are at the low end of the observed range. This suggests import choices are made so as to minimize transpo

Type sections are one of several kinds of stratotypes. A stratotype is the standard (original or subsequently designated), accessible, and specific sequence of rock for a named geologic unit that forms the basis for the definition, recognition, and comparison of that unit elsewhere. Geologists designate stratotypes for rock exposures that are illustrative and representative of the map unit being defined. Stratotypes ideally should remain accessible for examination and study by others. In this sense, geologic stratotypes are similar in concept to biological type specimens, however they remain i
