Le, Bollan Christophe. "La construction des grandes gares de la ligne Rennes-Brest : (1842-1937)." Rennes 2, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003REN20010.
Full text@This thesis, since the law of the 11 th june 1842 until to the nationalization of french railway's network in 1938, shows the roles which played successively the " Compagnie des Chemins de fer de l'Ouest " ( 1857-1908 ) and the " Compagnie des Chemins de fer de l'Etat " ( 1909-1937 ) in the architectural, spatial and technical development of the famous railway stations from Rennes-Brest 's line. Trough the examples of Rennes, Saint-Brieuc and Brest's railway stations, the analysis introduces the notion of railway area including the study of the public spaces ( reception of passengers ) and the technical spaces ( merchandises and marshalling's railways stations, military and industrial junctions, depositories, equipment's maintenance shop, annexes, harbour stations, agents lodgings, and common stations ). The themes here tackled treat of urban layout's processe, of architectural characteristics of building and civil engineering works, as well as practices or technical innovations
Temam, Saida. "Stratégies de gestion du risque innondation, ouvrages d'art et ingénieurs, en Loire nivernaise depuis le XVIII° siècle." Paris 8, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA084087.
Full textThe study of the history of the management strategies of the Loire valley flooding is of a great importance; the vulnerability to flooding has strongly increased during the last decades because of the urban growth and agricultural extension in floodplains. The study area is the Nivernais, located in the upper part of the middle Loire valley that was relatively neglected by scientific research, by comparison with the Touraine and Anjou valleys. The historical approach concerning the Loire valley vulnerability to inundations in the Nivernais demonstrates how present flooding management depends on a historical misunderstanding: “levees” (dykes) are presently considered by all (riverside inhabitants, managers and politicians) as the main infrastructure against flooding, however the dykes were built by XVIII° century engineers, who first aimed to improve navigation and to make the Loire River a modern fluvial axis. Political and economical origins of the change of use and perception of the fluvial works are investigated. As a paradox, limits of dykes in terms of protection against inundation were early identified and well known. A combination of different methods and tools is developed: analysis of maps and engineer memoires is reinforced by the elaboration of a historical GIS, that groups together data on fluvial bed evolution and engineering works, from the end of the XVII° century to the present

Full textThrough this study, we shall go back to the water management in the urban areas of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, precisely at the time when a suspicious perception of the humid environment is developing. The historiographical approach of water has been evolving for almost thirty years and is fostered by contemporary issues. Water has fully become a research subject and the setting of Brittany is not neutral : its environmental, institutional and cultural characteristics play a key role in the elaboration of hydrological works. The situation evolved over the two centuries : on the local level, the major changes lie in the councils' management of the hydraulic equipments and the appointment of administrators to handle the urban affairs. The designing mission shifts also from craftmanship to engineering, and this change in the professional expertise of the designer entails repercussions on both the organization of the building site and the morphology of the equipment. This redefinition of the administrative and technical tasks influences the works' practicality
Vrand, Caroline. "Les collections d'art d'Anne de Bretagne : au rythme de la vie de cour." Thesis, Paris 1, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA01H063.
Full textAnne of Brittany has received much attention from historians and art historians alike, and yet a comprehensive review of her art collections never been done. An examination of the composition of these collections helped to uncover the importance of both her ducal heritage -from her father Francis II-and her royal heritage -from Charles VIII. This examination also helped to better understand the importance of her own commissions and sponsorships. Through these successive endowments, Anne of Brittany amassed an extraordinary collection of art, among the richest in the kingdom. As an essential decor for the royal apartments, textiles hold an important place in these collections, whether it be silk fabric or tapestry. Tableware and religious gold work also represented an serious part of the collections, Furthermore, Anne own personal-taste is better expressed through be r affection for jewelry, Venetian glass and paintings. This study also sought to place these precious objects in their everyday context. Between placement, transport and storage, these pieces were in constant' movement as the backdrop to the itinerant court. The examination of this aspect provides further insight into the relationship between Anne and her collections, She was well aware that art held a prominent role in the affirmation of the Prince. She sought out the most renowned artists and appeared careful about the maintenance of their work. She also expressed her commitment to the duchy of Brittany by regularly storing her artwork in the castle of Nantes. Anne endeavored to exhibit her best pieces, particularly during major events of court life, again proving her dedication to the arts

Full textFar from the romantic image of the artist which lacks all sense of reality, today there ismuch discussion about the term artist being frequently linked to that of entrepreneur in allsectors of the arts to reflect the transformation in artistic activities. As major players in thecreative economy, artists are provoking a growing interest among observers and researchers. At the same time, the policy of developing entrepreneurship as a specific discipline in higher education - particularly in non-business studies – constitutes a major challenge to stimulate Western economies. In order to make a contribution to the discussion, we studied and analyzed the development of young artists’ entrepreneurial intentions and the social representations underlying that development. We conducted thirty-one interviews with students in arts schools in Brittany. The findings show a significant link between the artistic identity of the students and their entrepreneurial intent. They also enable us to identify the specificities of that intent. Lastly, the findings show that the building of a strong artistic identity and the construction of an entrepreneurial intent jointly mature and reinforce each other
Bocard, Hélène. "Les expositions de photographie à Paris sous le Second Empire et leur réception par la critique." Paris 4, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA040010.
Full textThe first part of our study deals with exhibitions which showed photographs : " street museums " (print dealers, photographers' studios), world fairs and exhibitions of industrial products; those organized from 1855 by the Société française de photographie (French Photographic Society) reflect the importance for the new medium of being viewed in non-commercial and non-industrial contexts; after slowly establishing itself, photography was finally accepted alongside the Salon des beaux-arts (Fine Arts Exhibition) (1859). The second part of this study addresses the photographers who took part in those exhibitions and the work they showed, the relationship between their presence at the exhibitions and their career development, and that between the overall production and the pieces exhibited. The last part analyses critical discourse as it appears in 85 contemporary reviews ; it shows how difficult it was for critics, when confronted with a new type of image, to find an appropriate language - distinct from that used for painting - and to bring photography into the realm of art

Full textMaintenance and sustainability of underground structures are the major tasks for infrastructures’ owners. To carry out these tasks, managers need to qualify the actual state of these facilities. There are very few operational methods to describe separately each component of an underground structure (structure lining, contact interface and surrounding soil). Most of them are mainly based on visual inspection. Nevertheless only the intrados of the tunnel is open to visual inspection. To improve their maintenance policy, that is to say sustain their heritage and keep it in good conditions of safety and operational, it is necessary that manager’s can update their diagnosis methods (AFTES, 2005). It is therefore imperative to have tools to better assess the actual condition of structures. However, the methods available at present managers are often either insufficient to provide quantitative information quality or poorly adapted to the constraints of these works. In this context, the ANR project MéDiTOSS "Methodology Diagnostic Tunnels and Underground Structures in Service" aims to develop a new diagnostic methodology adapted to this type of work characterizing the various components of the structure (structure of the lining, enclosing soil and their interface or contact). The objective of this thesis is to provide to the managers of physical and mechanical indicators that will guide its maintenance policy based on a certain expertise
Rabiller, Carole. "Critique d’art et morale. Une réception critique française et anglaise de la peinture victorienne." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019SORUL139.
Full textBy shifting the traditional issues - those of strictly national analyses - this thesis proposes to explore, using a comparative perspective, the importance given to the moral criterion by critics, French and English, when receiving Victorian painting. The corpus of this work is based on the successive study of English paintings presented at the “Expositions universelles” in Paris (1855, 1867, 1878 and 1889) as well as at the Royal Academy, and of the critical comments published in the press specialized or not. This approach reveals the dynamics of intercultural exchanges between the two countries around the moral issue and highlights the existence of a nationalist reception of art by critics. Consequently, a critic's judgment of a painting depends on their culture, their taste, but also more broadly on the social context and the principles specific to their society. As such, the competitive climate between France and England is reflected in the articles and books published on both sides of the English Channel. Powerful critical debates highlight the processes of appropriation and rejection that contribute to the definition of the two artistic cultures in relation to each other. They bring art and morality together by questioning the existence of a Victorian “grand genre”, the exhibition as a place for critics to circumscribe a national art and define themselves, as well as John Ruskin's (1819-1901) moralist influence on society and the art it produces. The heterogeneity of the art criticism profession associated with the plasticity of the word “moral” therefore allows this work to propose a definition of Victorian painting and its actors

Full textThe construction of a global translation market is not just an economic fact, but also a symbolic act. In order to understand this, we have investigated the genesis and the institutionalisation of "translation" as a category worth of a legitimate public intervention. Firstly, based on archival evidence, the thesis maps the social space of problematisation of "the book" and of its modes of international circulation, by looking at how French publishers, diplomats, bureaucrats and experts get involved in this process. Secondly, based on 103 in depth semi-directive interviews, it then investigates the institutional construction of a local space of proximity, between Paris and London, between two publishing markets and between two conflicting ethos, whilst highlighting "street-level bureaucrats"work practices. Finally, the thesis explores the possibility of a European translation market as a symbolic construction
