Abstract:
Sneezing (sternutatio) is a poorly understood polysynaptic physiologic reflex phenomenon. Sneezing has exerted a strange fascination on humans throughout history, and induced sneezing was widely used by physicians for therapeutic purposes, on the assumption that sneezing eliminates noxious factors from the body, mainly from the head. The present contribution examines the various mixtures used for inducing sneezes (remedia sternutatoria) over the centuries. The majority of the constituents of the sneeze-inducing remedies are modulators of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels. The TRP channel superfamily consists of large heterogeneous groups of channels that play numerous physiological roles such as thermosensation, chemosensation, osmosensation and mechanosensation. Sneezing is associated with the activation of the wasabi receptor, (TRPA1), typical ligand is allyl isothiocyanate and the hot chili pepper receptor, (TRPV1), typical agonist is capsaicin, in the vagal sensory nerve terminals, activated by noxious stimulants.

Abstract:
Mediation is generally perceived as comparing well to litigation in terms of cost, privacy and speed. Such practical considerations are of as much value to the parties to burial and cremation disputes as they are to the parties in many different types of dispute. Burial and cremation disputes are however particularly difficult and sensitive in nature, often involving complex cultural issues and family conflicts. These characteristic features pose challenges in the mediation context just as they do in litigation. It is argued here that mediation is well suited to addressing these challenges provided mediation style, process and delivery mechanisms are tailored appropriately. The predominant problem-solving model has limitations in meeting cultural and emotional needs, making it essential that a transformative approach informs mediation practice and procedure in relation to burial and cremation disputes. It is also argued that without their agreement to all aspects of the process, mediation of such disputes may be unsafe for the parties. In addition, where cultural differences or questions of tikanga are at issue, mandatory mediation is of questionable legitimacy. Mediation of burial and cremation disputes, particularly in the New Zealand context, can therefore occur only within a framework that upholds principles of self-determination at every level.

Abstract:
Little is known about parents’ motivations to engage in Internet mediation nor about how parents may influence each other’s Internet mediation practices. The present study uses triadic data, with reports from the mother, the father, and the adolescent child from the same family ( N = 357). Structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied for testing the relationship between parents’ concerns over Internet risks, parents’ engagement in mediation practices, and the adolescent’s engagement in risk behavior on social network sites (SNSs). Parents’ risk perception was not related to mediation practices, but the mother’s risk perception had a positive effect on the father’s engagement in parental mediation. Parental mediation predicted less online contact with strangers by the adolescent. The results show that both parents contribute individually to their adolescent child’s safe Internet use, which stresses the importance of involving both parents in parental mediation research.

Abstract:
Our increasing dependency on the internet has had a significant social, behavioural and psychological impact on us all, and not entirely positive. Networked technologies provide an endlessly-renewing refuge of digital information from the uncertainties of life in the physical world, a potentially addictive and ultimately unfulfilling emotional sanctuary. A compulsive craving for constant connectivity has been normalized by broader trends in public life, including a celebration of hypermediated workaholism, unsustainable consumerism, and a corporatist agenda for commodifying personal data and social conformity.Habitual use of networked digital media is crucial in order to socially and professionally thrive in contemporary society, so exposure cannot be completely curtailed and must be voluntarily monitored and managed at a personal level. Informed by an analysis of related socio-theoretical phenomena and historical counter-strategies, as well as expert interviews and interaction design theory, we explore how this could potentially happen through re-sensitizing the ‘smartness’ and ‘responsiveness’ of the technology itself, to appropriately curb its own misuse. These issues are addressed by a design concept developed through two artifacts: the first, a web-based application; and the second, a semi-functional technology probe and conjectural video prototype. Design is enlisted to explore how rethinking the implementation of digital experiences could potentially re- empower an individual to achieve a temporary liberation from (or at least an increased self-awareness of) their splintered psychological predicament, in the hopes of ultimately guiding them towards a healthier, more balanced relationship with networked media technologies.

Abstract:

Increasing students' intentions to pursue mathematics-intensive careers is an urgent priority in the United States. To foster these intentions among marginalized student groups, such as immigrant students, and achieve equity in their career options, a critical question is whether we should allocate a greater proportion of school resources to mathematics over other subjects. The aims of this dissertation study were, first, to conceptually model and statistically evaluate how a school environment that prioritizes mathematics over other subjects might influence students' intentions to pursue mathematics over other academic subjects in the long term, and second, how this relationship is mediated by students’ mathematics pursuit attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavior (Ajzen, 1991), and moderated by their immigrant standing. The data for this study stemmed from the U.S. 2012 Programme For International Student Assessment Academic & Science (PISA) Student Questionnaire and School Questionnaire. A predictive mean matching technique was used to impute missing data that would resemble observed data. A 2-1-1 multilevel mediation Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was implemented to accurately measure a school-level effect and student-level effect of the relationship of the examined constructs and to test the hypothesized model for the total sample. In order to compare immigrant student group and non-immigrant student group in the path model, multiple group path analysis was conducted. The results of the multilevel SEM model for the total sample presented that, at the school level (level 2), the school’s mathematics resources had no statistically significant direct and indirect effects on aggregated students’ intentions to pursue mathematics over other subjects. However, at the student level (level 1), students’ experiential and instrumental attitudes toward the pursuit of mathematics were positively related to students’ intentions to pursue mathematics over other subjects. The results of the multiple group path analysis comparing immigrant and non-immigrant student groups also found that the school’s mathematics resources had no statistically significant direct and indirect effects on students’ intentions to pursue mathematics over other subjects. However, a statistical difference in the overall path model of these two groups was found. The implications of this study for researchers, educators, and policymakers were discussed

Evans, Carol Jo. "“EVERYDAY SYMBOLS FOR MEDIATION” CONFLICT AND COOPERATION OVER THE MANAGEMENT OF CULTURAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES WITHIN THE BIG SOUTH FORK NATIONAL RIVER AND RECREATION AREA." UKnowledge, 2010. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/16.

Abstract:
Utilizing quantitative and qualitative methods, this in-depth ethnographic study of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BSFNRRA) examines social conflict and resistance stemming from competing values, definitions, and concerns over the management of cultural and natural resources within the region. The timing of this project is fortuitous for the National Park Service (NPS) has completed the creation of a ten year General Management Plan. Thus, we are provided with an opportunity to study and analyze the policy and methodology that park officials are required to follow in creating a management plan and eliciting public participation. The first goal of this study is to ascertain how the establishment of the BSFNRRA has altered local communities: (1) means of access to the area and (2) uses of resources within the area. Several questions will be asked and probed for answers. What happens to the meanings of the land and places on the land (such as a family cemetery) when the land is transformed from private to public ownership and is managed by a government agency for the benefit of preservation or recreation? How have residents been affected by and adapted to this transformation? The second goal is to probe the complex relationships and identify sources of conflict, resistance, and cooperation between community residents, NPS employees, and special interest groups. Essential questions arise and must be addressed. How are conflict, resistance, and cooperation demonstrated? The third goal is to delineate what measures can be taken to lessen conflict or resistance and promote cooperation? Since resistance often manifests itself in not participating in public meetings pertaining to the BSFNRRA, what measures can be taken to promote public participation? In conclusion, this study will draw clear and concise recommendations towards diminishing conflict between local residents and the NPS, along with recommendations on increasing public participation in the creation of policy pertaining to the management of public land. In addition to the applied aspect of this project, this study contributes to the body of theory by building on the mentalist paradigm of symbolic interactionism and the materialist paradigms of conflict and resistance theory.

Wu, MeiMei. "Investigating the adoption of banking services delivered over remote channels : the case of Chinese Internet banking customers." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9387.

Full text
Abstract:
Customers adoption of Internet banking has become a widely-researched topic, although it is fair to state that some research gaps still exist. This research aims to fill some of the research gaps by examining the factors that determine the relevant behaviour of three different categories of Internet banking customers in China (i.e. current users, non-users, and discontinued users), and by developing two conceptual models that are derived from different, but complementary, theoretical approaches. The Decision Making Model and the Service and Relationship Evaluation Model are developed in this research. The Decision Making Model is grounded in the technology acceptance model (TAM) and it incorporates an additional construct of perceived value of using Internet banking. Additionally, the Service and Relationship Evaluation Model is derived from the service quality evaluation and relationship quality evaluation literature. Unlike in most other Internet banking adoption studies, these two conceptual models are used complementarily to deliver a comprehensive understanding of customers Internet banking adoption in China. The models are tested using a sample of 614 Chinese Internet banking customers collected via mall-intercept personal interviews based on questionnaires. Partial Least Square (PLS) path modelling and mediation analysis are applied to test the hypotheses advanced in the two models. The key findings of this research show that perceived value is a major factor for explaining customers Internet banking adoption, thus indicating to the banks that they should reduce costs associated with using Internet banking while providing more (perceived) benefits to customers; the importance of incorporating perceived value in Internet banking adoption model(s) is also demonstrated. The findings also confirm that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are important factors that determine the adoption of Internet banking by all categories of customers. Current users and non-users perceptions of their behavioural control over using Internet banking contribute to their adoption of Internet banking, and such control perceptions are shaped by self-efficacy, perceived government support and technological support. Additionally, it is demonstrated that both current users and discontinued users perceived value and perceived service quality of Internet banking have positive associations with their satisfaction with Internet banking, which lead to their Internet banking adoption. Moreover, the findings reveal that current users are more likely to continue with Internet banking if they are affectively committed to their banks; they are less likely to continue with Internet banking if they are calculatively committed to their banks due to the costs associated with leaving the banks. These therefore indicate the importance of establishing high-quality customer-bank relationships and placing less strict switching cost barriers that impose less pressure on their existing customers. This research contributes to the Internet banking adoption literature by (i) identifying the important category of Internet banking discontinued users, apart from current users and non-users; and (ii) using two complementary conceptual models, which are grounded in different theoretical streams, to investigate the relevant adoption behaviour of all three categories of Internet banking customers. It hence delivers a comprehensive understanding of personal customers adoption of Internet banking in China.

Abstract:
The monograph of the Russian American historian is devoted to a number of conceptual problems of US foreign policy in the period of early globalization (late XIX-early XX century). The significance of the socio-economic factor is reinterpreted from the standpoint of modern theory and methodology; the role of the ideology used by the political elite to justify American expansion is traced. New interpretations of the causes and consequences of the Spanish-American war of 1898 are given: for the first time, the place of the "yellow" press in inciting anti-Spanish sentiment among ordinary Americans is shown in detail as one of the first manifestations of successful manipulation of public opinion; the level of combat capability of the American army, which achieved victory over a weaker enemy, but was unprepared to conduct an armed struggle for achieving geopolitical interests with leading European powers, is critically assessed. The archival material, first introduced into scientific circulation, traces the mediation activities of President Roosevelt As the first successful experience in the peaceful settlement of regional conflicts, and also shows the search by top officials for a new world order under the auspices of the United States, with an emphasis on the use of the principles of international arbitration. It is addressed to researchers, teachers, and students interested in the history of the United States.

Full text
Abstract:
Over recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the various possible forms of poverty and housing vulnerability: from the total lack of shelter of the homeless to the risk of losing their home that now threatens numerous families in medium-low income brackets. At the same time, the traditional linear and standardised housing policies appear no longer adequate to address these phenomena. This book contains the results of a study entrusted by the Tuscan Regional Authority to a working group from the University of Florence and the Fondazione Giovanni Michelucci. The research explores the field of practices for self-production of housing in Italy and the world, through a critical selection of significant experiences, revealing the architectural and social creativity exploited in a large variety of collective actions. The book also contains a reconstruction of housing problems in Tuscany and an overview of alternative approaches to housing policy. The last section is devoted to the research-action on the occupation of the Luzzi, the abandoned sanatorium on the border between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino, a case that illustrates the most significant contradictions and dilemmas gravitating around the housing issue for the new poor: the problem of homeless immigrants; the difficulty of the authorities in managing problems of extreme housing poverty; the role of the associations and organisations of social mediation, and the inherent complexity of achieving a participatory approach to social and town planning research.

Full text
Abstract:
In December 1945 the "L'Approdo" transmissions were launched at the RAI headquarters in Florence. The radio programme, one of the most important in Italy at the time, went on the air up to 1977, being accompanied from 1952 by a magazine and from 1963 to 1972 by a television programme. The three parallel cultural "enterprises" boasted an impressive number of important collaborators, gravitating around the decisive figure of Carlo Betocchi as leader and organiser. Nevertheless, despite its significance, even the adventure of "L'Approdo" was destined to die. When the transmissions and the publication of the magazine ceased, an entire cultural élite had to come to terms not only with the objective difficulties, but with a crisis of trust and of commitment in the face of what were now irreversible changes in the country. Yet – precisely because "L'Approdo" had battled for an approach that was destined to become minority with the triumph of the new media society – the retrieval of its history and the reconstruction through voices, pages and images of one of the first examples of encounter and mediation between culture and communication appears particularly significant. The methods and the emphatic planning of the entire experience emerge clearly from the first issue of the magazine, produced here in anastatic reprint, and above all from the enclosed CD-Rom which proposes, along with the tables of contents of "L'Approdo", the files and records of the entire correspondence (over 20,000 unpublished pieces) and details of the surviving scripts of the transmissions… In short, we finally have at our disposal material that enables us to reconstruct – through the traces of a programme and a magazine and of the intellectuals who collaborated on them – thirty years of culture and utopia, of compromise and enthusiasm, clustered around the birth, growth and death of an articulated project of "cultural policy".

Abstract:
AbstractThe concept of hybridity sheds light on the complexity of conflict settings. It helps to analyse the participation of all parties and actors involved and entangled in a social network of normative and political power, while avoiding theoretical binaries that over-simplify the process of post-conflict peacebuilding. What lacks, however, is a practical application of hybridity in peacebuilding that actively engages with bottom/local or grassroots, top/national and international actors through mediation in the mid-space to create sustainable peace. Given this practical shortcoming of hybridity, this chapter examines mid-space actors as gatekeepers and their capacities to enable dialogue among opposing parties. The aim is to offer insights for the international community, as outside intervenors, in promoting the bridge-building potentialities of gatekeepers. Specifically, externally led efforts to engage with the specific skill sets of mid-space local actors are explored. It is argued in this chapter that such engagement provides a favourable environment for sustaining peace by overcoming power struggles in and around the mid-space.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter investigates different ways in which the film techniques of digitally mediated images—such as found footage, diegetic camera, and computer screen—achieve story truthfulness and affective engagement in the viewer’s narrative interpretation process. The pursuit of truthful storytelling is to demonstrate objective facts, while mediated images in film are predominantly subjective. The chapter starts by reviewing the perennial paradox of two seemingly mutually exclusive narrative functions and then tackles the paradox by proposing a multi-leveled framework, synthesizing semiotic conceptualization and cognitive research findings. It also analyzes the various forms of digital mediated images in films over the last two decades and sheds light on how the functions of truthfulness and affective engagement can be closely intertwined rather than in conflict.

Abstract:
This chapter elucidates the relevance of norm diffusion as a strategic tool through which mediators assert not only their control over the peacemaking process, but manage to use it to institute, consolidate and boost their international relevance, credibility and reputation more generally. While both legitimacy and soft power have received ample attention from various subfields in social sciences, surprisingly, very little is known about the role they play in international mediation broadly, and norm diffusion through mediation in particular. Building on existing international relations literature on legitimacy and soft power, the chapter aims to address this gap and examine which factors enable or deter norm diffusion through mediation, and their impact on mediators’ choices in peacemaking.

Abstract:
This paper presents the result of a three-year action research plan involving the innovative application of “LiveDVD”, a web-based English learning system loaded with VODs and embedded into the English learning program of a polytechnic university in Taiwan. Over the implementation period, the LiveDVD action plan essentially involves use requirement on students along with creation of learning and assessment materials for the target VODs and outcome management. Outcome assessment indicators include (1) the association between use activeness of LiveDVD and pass status of English proficiency certificates and (2) the causal relations between LiveDVD-related variables and English learning outcome. A survey questionnaire on LiveDVD and the management platform were employed to collect relevant data. The chi-squared test of group independence and an SEM-based path analysis were performed to address the outcome indicators respectively. The findings of the project include: (1) use of LiveDVD is positively and significantly associated with the pass status of English proficiency certificates and, (2) use motivation has direct effect on English proficiency and create the significant mediation effect on English proficiency certificates. This project yields significant implications especially for vocational higher education in Taiwan in the innovative application of educational technology to English education coupled with an effective outcome management model.

Abstract:
The use of digital teaching-learning methods and technologies in the didactic activity contributes to the improvement of the quality of the instructive-educational process, having an active-participatory character and a real active-formative value on the student's personality. In the socio-cultural tradition, ICT is defined as a means of mediation for knowledge, and from a dialogical perspective, it is seen as a means of opening, deepening and broadening the aspirations of dialogue. We must not forget that learning does not only involve the accumulation of knowledge, but growth, enrichment, evolution. Some rules can be stated for the successful integration of ICT in teaching. First of all, we must be sure that we have control over the material, both in terms of content and format, even if you are supported by an ICT specialist. Then it is necessary to have a plan on paper, separate from the material on digital media, the purpose and form of the presentation should not be very clear. Above all, the focus must be on the student and his learning needs. The biggest danger in any teaching-learning project that includes ICT and to be more focused on technology / creativity, not on the student-receiver and his learning needs.

Abstract:
Vascular structure — a network of convective paths — is a ubiquitous element in multicellular, living systems. The key function of vascular structure in animals and plants is mediation of convective mass transfer over macroscopic distances; this transfer allows an organism to monitor and control the chemical state of its tissues. In our laboratory, we are developing methods to embed and operate microfluidic systems within tissue-like materials in order to capture this function for both biological and non-biological applications. I will present two examples to illustrate our efforts: 1) Capillary beds for the culture of mammalian cells in three-dimensions. In this section, I will discuss the development of methods both to fabricate synthetic capillary beds and to grow them directly out of endothelial cells. I will highlight how simple ideas from continuum mechanics and material science have guided our efforts. 2) Synthetic xylem networks that allow for the transpiration of water at large negative pressures. I will point out the unusual thermodynamic and transport phenomena that are involved in the transpiration process in plants. I will then present our perspectives on the design criteria for systems — synthetic and biological — that mediate this process. Finally, I will describe our experiments with “synthetic trees” in which we have reproduced the main features of transpiration. I will conclude with perspectives on applications and generalizations of both these classes of vascularized materials.

Abstract:
The 21st century represents a century in which the world has flourished through technological progress, transforming many businesses in line with digitalization, social networks, and the tendencies brought by the internet generations. In sociological terms, many problems have remained the same despite progress. In this sense, women continue to fight for one of the fundamental human rights - gender equality and non - discrimination against male - female in the social, business and political environment. However, there are many positive examples of women leaders today, presidents of governments and large companies, successful women entrepreneurs, and they dominate in certain branches of the economy. Although care, pharmacy, education, and the like have so far been considered "typically female" professions, the business of intermediation in the sale and lease of real estate is attracting more and more attention of female gender. Whether women dominate such a significant branch of the economy, and why, the author will try to answer by looking at the results and statistics of one of the most developed real estate markets in the world - the real estate market in the United States. Whether women are naturally gifted in the field of mediation in buying or selling real estate or have managed to dominate the market with their professionalism and motivation, are questions that occupy the scientific public, but it is gratifying to see examples of so many successful women in the real estate with amazing careers and results. It can be concluded that it would be commendable if this trend spread over to other branches of the economy, as well as to other countries in the world.

Abstract:
This paper discusses results from the first successful de ployment of a predictive modelling technology that in forms pressure optimization procedures to help minimize sand production and increase hydrocarbon production ef ficiency in sand prone oil wells. The technique takes variabilities in sand production ob served through time across the reservoir section, inferred from downhole sand entry logs, alongside real-time sand transportation logs that monitor sand deposition in pipe as key inputs (both of which computed using a fiber op tic Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) based Downhole sand monitoring system). This data is then combined with other time series sensor inputs, like choke position, Down Hole Pressure (DHP) and surface flowline acoustic measurement (sand detector) to predict drawdown pressure envelopes to improve production efficiency. This paper details observations and initial field results from the first deployment of the capability in a highly deviated sand prone oil well completed with an open hole gravel pack (OHGP) completion in the BP-operated Azeri- Chirag- Gunashli (ACG) field located in the Azer baijan sector of the Caspian Sea. The paper will detail observations and procedures used to increase oil production by over 25% and eliminate sanding risks using the technology. The proposed workflow is part of a comprehensive suite of downhole sand surveillance and management tools fueled by streaming analytics capabilities run on DAS data that have played a key role in managing sand production challenges in the ACG field. The technology has been applied numerous times for base protection, drawdown optimization and targeted re mediation. In this instance, we discuss the use of the technology to (1) identify and inform the source of sand detected at surface e.g., formation or completion accu-mulation, (2) identify formation intervals at risk of sanding, and (3) design advisory operational procedures for production optimization.
