Abstract:
The Toulon-Verona Conference was founded in 1998 by prof. Claudio Baccarani of the University of Verona, Italy, and prof. Michel Weill of the University of Toulon, France. It has been organized each year in a different place in Europe in cooperation with a host university (Toulon 1998, Verona 1999, Derby 2000, Mons 2001, Lisbon 2002, Oviedo 2003, Toulon 2004, Palermo 2005, Paisley 2006, Thessaloniki 2007, Florence, 2008). Originally focusing on higher education institutions, the research themes have over the years been extended to the health sector, local government, tourism, logistics, banking services. Around a hundred delegates from about twenty different countries participate each year and nearly one thousand research papers have been published over the last ten years, making of the conference one of the major events in the field of quality in services.

Abstract:
Philip W. Anderson (1923–2020) is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential physicists of the second half of the twentieth century. Educated at Harvard, he served during World War II as a radar engineer, and began a thirty-five year career at Bell Laboratories in 1949. He was soon recognized as one of the pre-eminent theoretical physicists in the world, specializing in understanding the collective behavior of the vast number of atoms and electrons in a sample of solid matter. He won a one-third share of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physics for his discovery of a phenomenon common to all waves in disordered matter called Anderson localization and the development of the Anderson impurity model to study magnetism. At Cambridge and Princeton Universities, Anderson led the way in transforming solid-state physics into the deep, subtle, and coherent discipline known today as condensed matter physics. He developed the concepts of broken symmetry and emergence and championed the concept of complexity as an organizing principle to attack difficult problems inside and outside physics. In 1971, Anderson was the first scientist to challenge the claim of high-energy particle physicists that their work was the most deserving of federal funding. Later, he testified before Congress opposing the Superconducting Super Collider particle accelerator. Anderson was a dominant figure in his field for almost fifty years. At an age when most scientists think about retirement, he made a brilliant contribution to many-electron theory and applied it to a novel class of high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD) typically presents with both proximal and distal weakness, areflexia, and distal sensory findings. Two-thirds of patients have a progressive course over many months to years, however one-third of patients have a relapsing course with partial or complete recovery. It is important to be aware of several systemic disorders which may be associated with CIDP. Immunoglobulin M antibody–producing neuropathies have a monoclonal protein that is usually detected with serum protein electrophoresis, which may mimic CIDP. This chapter emphasizes the importance of differential diagnosis and workup. Treatment options are also described.

Lewin, Leif, and Johannes Lindvall. One Hundred Years of Swedish Economic Policy. Edited by Jon Pierre. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199665679.013.36.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the development of Swedish economic policy from the early 1920s to the present. The chapter has three objectives: to describe how Swedish economic policy-making has evolved over time, concentrating on a few especially important periods: the adoption of expansionary fiscal policies in the 1930s, the development of Sweden’s postwar economic model in the 1950s, the struggle to maintain full employment in the 1970s and 1980s, the financial crisis of the early 1990s, and Sweden’s response to worldwide recession in the 2000s. The second objective is to show if and when Swedish governments have pursued economic policies that set Sweden apart from other rich democracies; and the third is to examine a number of scholarly debates concerning how to explain some of the economic policy shifts that have occurred in Sweden since its transition to democracy in the 1910s.

Wheeldon, Marianne. The Controversy over the Ode à la France. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190631222.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 4 considers the posthumous premieres of 1928 and their performance in a high-profile concert commemorating the tenth anniversary of the composer’s death. The event sparked fevered debate in the press and occasioned a surge of vitriolic commentary. By performing unpublished works from Debussy’s student years as well as his final incomplete work, the Ode à la France, the concert program and ensuing controversy got to the heart of what was now at stake in the composer’s posthumous reputation: what should be commemorated and who had the authority to decide. The struggle over these two questions led to numerous exchanges in the press and culminated in a lawsuit that pitted the composer’s widow, Emma, against a committee formed of Debussy’s closest friends and colleagues. Whereas the previous chapters highlighted the antagonisms between the pre- and postwar generations, Chapter 4 turns its focus to the fissures within the debussyists themselves.

Cramer, Franz Anton. Warfare over Realism. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036767.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the development of East German dance after the proclamation of national independence in 1949. This development was constructed within a larger debate about realism and the role of art-making in a socialist state. The importance of these questions inspired leading authors to attempt to define the meaning of realism in dance over a period of twenty years. These ideologies evolved along with the broader political and economic situation in the German Democratic Republic. The chapter focuses on the significant 1966 founding of the Tanztheater company at East Berlin's Komische Oper and the role played by its artistic director and chief choreographer, Tom Schilling. The unstable legacy of his work reveals that the question of how to create dances that are both politically effective as well as successful works of art has yet to be resolved.
