Abstract:
Abstract. To date, few studies have focused on perceived overprotection from the perspective of people with dementia (PwD). In the present examination, the association of perceived overprotection in PwD is examined as an autonomy-restricting factor and thus negative for their mental well-being. Cross-sectional data from the prospective DYADEM study of 82 patient/partner dyads (mean age = 74.26) were used to investigate the association between overprotection, perceived stress, depression, and quality of life (QoL). The analyses show that an overprotective contact style with PwD has a significant positive association with stress and depression, and has a negative association with QoL. The results emphasize the importance of avoiding an overprotective care style and supporting patient autonomy.

The paper deals with the problem of overprotective attitudes towards children with disabilities. Such attitudes of parents can be defined as a degree of parental care which is excessive in relation to the level of the child’s development and capabilities. The author discusses selected results of studies on the subject. He also points out the consequences of overprotection on the development of a child with disabilities. Referring to the literary figure of Klara Sesemann, the author illustrates the potential already existing in a child with disabilities which is sometimes constrained by overprotective parents. Finally, the paper refers to the need to build parents’ competences that will help their child expand the limits of their own independence.

Abstract:
Using a written questionnaire survey of 200 first-year university students, we investigated associations between parental rearing attitudes and health-related lifestyle. Participants completed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI; Parker, Tupling, & Brown, 1979) and the Health Practice Index (HPI; Hagihara & Morimoto, 1991). We found that more female respondents with unhealthy lifestyles perceived their parents as having been overprotective. No such correlation was found for male respondents. These findings suggest that, particularly for females, health-related lifestyle may be related to perceived parental rearing attitudes. By contrast, for males, depression correlated with low maternal care or overprotection.

Abstract:
AbstractFamily environment has a clear role in suicidal behavior of adolescents. We assessed the relationship between parental bonding and suicidal behavior in suicidal (n = 53) and non-suicidal (n = 47) adolescent inpatients. Two dimensions of parental bonding: care and overprotection, were assessed with the Parental Bonding Instrument. Results showed that adolescents with severe suicidal behavior tended to perceive their mothers as less caring and more overprotective compared to those with mild or no suicidal behavior. A discriminant analysis distinguished significantly between adolescents with high suicidality and those with low suicidality [χ2(5) = 15.54; p = 0.01] in 71% of the cases. The perception of the quality of maternal bonding may be an important correlate of suicidal behavior in adolescence and may guide therapeutic strategies and prevention.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore how pandemic-related media use relates to both protective and overprotective behaviors and to probe the underlying mechanisms. The data were collected online during the early outbreak of COVID-19 in China, and a total of 1118 valid cases, which covered the 30 provincial administrative divisions in mainland China, were collected. Results showed that official government media use was positively associated with protective behaviors and institutional trust was an important mediator. Commercial media use was also found to be positively associated with overprotective behavior, and anxiety mediated this relationship. Findings of this study suggested that different media sources could play completely different roles. Institutional trust in government institutions and medical care systems were equally critical in translating the media effect into public compliance with the preventive measures advocated by the relevant departments. Media outlets and practitioners should also be responsible in order to avoid causing unnecessary anxiety among the public so as to reduce irrational overprotective behaviors.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine criminal offenders’ dispositional empathy and relate it to perceived parenting characteristics of primary caregivers (measured as care and overprotection) and inmates’ internal working models of the self and others (measured as attachment anxiety and avoidance, respectively). Design/methodology/approach Compared to a group of 110 college students, the group of 102 inmates indicated lower levels of cognitive and emotional empathy (measured as perspective taking (PT) and empathic concern (EC), respectively). Among inmates, perceived parental care was related to PT; parental overprotection was related to EC. Findings The inmates’ data fit a model suggesting a mediational role of attachment anxiety in the relation between perceived parental overprotection and EC. Also, inmates’ attachment avoidance moderated the relation between attachment anxiety and EC, so that the relation only occurred when attachment avoidance was not high. The findings suggested potential protective roles of early parental bonding and positive views of social others in enhancing empathy for justice-involved populations. Originality/value The findings shed light on how inmates’ perception of parenting related to both aspects of empathy and how cognitive representations of the self and others potentially underlie the association between perceived parenting and their disposition for EC. To cultivate dispositional empathy as a means of preventing delinquency, it is important to advocate not only parenting characterized as caring and warm, but also cognitive interventions on framing positive working models of social others, particularly for those who perceive their primary caregivers as overprotective and are highly avoidant to social closeness.

Abstract:
SynopsisIt has been well established that individuals with a history of depression report their parents as being less caring and more overprotective of them than do controls. ‘Affectionless control’ in childhood has thus been proposed as a risk factor for depression. Evidence is presented from a logistic regression analysis of data from a volunteer community sample that lack of care rather than over-protection is the primary risk factor. No evidence for an interaction effect of low care and over-protection was found.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present studies was to test the hypothesis that students' perceptions of parental bonding may be predictive of how individuals approach achievement situations. It was hypothesized that reports of parental overprotection would be predictive of elevated fears and subsequent stress and low achievement compared to perceived parental care. No hypotheses were specified regarding the gender of the parent. In Study 1 participants were 230 elementary school students who were assessed on motivation, stress and affect prior to a “high stakes testing”. Results indicated that paternal caring scores and, to a lesser degree, maternal caring scores were associated with lower levels of fear of failure, anxiety and depression. In Study 2, 58 college students were monitored (physiologically) during a class presentation in order to test the hypothesis that perceived parental rearing is predictive of stress through influencing fear of failure. Results from Multilevel Random Coefficient Modeling showed that perceived parental caring was associated with significantly lessened stress compared to perceived overprotection. Modeling the relationships using Structural Equation Modeling indicated that students reporting an overprotective parental style approached the task with significantly elevated fears, had elevated stress during the task, and lower task performance. Another salient finding was that students' perceptions of their fathers' parenting style was highly predictive of the stress response. The discussion reviews these findings and examines possible implications for enhancing achievement motivation in educational contexts.

Abstract:
The article aims to identify adolescent anxiety as a personal trait, one of the most dangerous consequences of an overprotective parenting style in modern conditions. The methodological basis of the study involves a set of diagnostic methods (diagnosis of parental attitudes, diagnosis of personality motivation for success, parental attitude research instrument) using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, correlation and regression analysis, and other methods of mathematical statistics. The empirical research has found that excessive care, especially in mother-dominant families, leads to pronounced overprotective. The authors of this article found a direct correlation between this parenting style and the levels of anxiety and motivation in adolescents (an inverse correlation between anxiety level and motivation for success was found). High personal anxiety was recorded in 33% of adolescents, which indicated a negative experience of suffering anxiety. The practical value of this article is due to an integrated approach to the tasks of correctional psychology, which should consider both the personal predisposition to anxiety in adolescents and their early experiences of anxiety. At the same time, educational work with parents and psychological methods to reduce adolescent anxiety are equally important. The involvement of wartime contexts in the perception of the issue raised makes this article original.

Abstract:
Intimacy is a central component of romantic relationships with the development of a capacity for intimacy regarded as being one of the milestones of adulthood. Fear of intimacy has been defined as “the inhibited capacity of an individual, because of anxiety to exchange thoughts and feelings of personal significance with another individual who is highly valued” (Descutner & Thelen, 1991, p. 219). Although a number of studies have focused on fear of intimacy, there has been limited research on th The primary aim of this study was to investigate the influence of past parenting (perceived maternal care and overprotection), and separation-individuation on young adults’ fear of intimacy regarding heterosexual partner relationships. A further aim was to examine whether there were differences in separation-individuation according to living situation and partnership status.e factors that might influence fear of intimacy. Past experience in the parent-child relationship has been found to influence both the capacity to form romantic relationships and separation-individuation. Establishing a romantic relationship and leaving the parental home have both been identified as important markers of adulthood, however current Australian statistics indicate that, compared to previous decades, in the period of emerging adulthood (18-25 years) fewer individuals are involved in a romantic relationship and a higher percentage of young people are living at home with their parents. The relationship between these social trends and past parenting, separationindividuation and fear of intimacy has not been explored.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The risk of AC corrosion has always been linked in particular to the parallelisms of underground pipelines with HVAC lines, especially in those geographical areas where the morphology of the territory creates obligatory so-called "technological corridors", and therefore forces the coexistence of different services over long distances. More recently, the greater diffusion of AC-powered railway networks has further increased the AC interfering sources, while the use of more performing coatings on underground pipelines has on the one hand increased their insulation from the surrounding soil, and on the other has increased the risk of overprotection compared to old, less performing, or more degraded coatings. This paper, starting from a real case found in a gas distribution network in a European big city, will present the normative criteria to be used to keep the AC corrosion risk under control, and will highlight how precisely the simultaneous presence of cathodic overprotection may result in an autocatalytic cycle leading to accelerated AC corrosion, in which monitoring becomes essential in order to be able to carry out on time the appropriate corrective actions.

Abstract:
Abstract The Italian ministerial decree (D.M. 4 April 2014) foresees that at rail crossings and parallelisms, pipes for liquid and gas transportation shall be encased in a well-sealed, coated steel pipe called casing pipe. Laboratory tests have been carried out to investigate the protection and interference condition of both the carrier pipe and the casing in the case where water is present in the annulus. Cathodic protection was applied to the gas pipe by an impressed current system, cell voltage was increased and the IR-free potential of both pipes was measured. Different configurations were considered for the casing: bare tube with and without a through hole; coated tube with a defect on the internal and external surface; bare tube electrically connected to the internal pipe by a shunt. In the presence of a perfect watertight seal, no interference takes place on the casing pipe, as expected. If an electrolyte is present in the annulus, overprotection conditions on the internal pipe are reached in all tested conditions, except for test performed on the connected pipes. In the presence of a bare casing, interference effects are negligible but overprotection condition on the internal tube is reached at the lowest cell voltage.

Abstract This paper illustrates the results gained during the first three years of cathodic protection application to Frejus highway viaducts in northern Italy. CP applications deal with corrosion control of chloride contaminated structures (cathodic protection application properly said) and the corrosion prevention of new non-contaminated structures, constructed with incorporated cathodic protection systems (so-called cathodic prevention). Both normal and post-tensioned structures are present: in the latter case the problems connected with the risk of hydrogen embrittlement of the tendons are discussed. The paper illustrates also the computerized system for gathering and monitoring data and the criteria adopted to evaluate and control the cathodic protection and cathodic prevention conditions as well as to avoid overprotection.

Abstract:
Abstract Many aging subsea assets with time-expired or failing cathodic protection (CP) now require retrofit CP systems to allow their continued safe operation beyond the original design life. In the case of floating assets such as Floating Production Units (FPUs), the type of system that was straightforward to install in the shipyard when the asset was commissioned is totally impractical to refurbish when the vessel is on station and producing. Moreover, the CP data needed to inform life extension decisions is often erratic and costly to obtain. We describe the design of a retrofit Impressed Current CP (ICCP) system deployed in the Norwegian North Sea that raised a number of significant engineering challenges. These included a congested seabed and water column, installation vessel space constraints, potentially short weather windows, and the risk of either underprotecting or overprotecting different subsea components. In addition, we describe an innovative deployment of an integrated instrumentation package comprising subsea CP monitoring and through-water communication. These CP monitor units are used to provide high quality CP potential data to provide automatic closed loop control of the ICCP system.

Abstract:
Abstract Reinforced concrete seawater intake structures are a critical component to enable continuous operation of power stations, desalination plants, petrochemical plants and other heavy industries located near to the coast. The primary objective of these structures is to supply a reliable quantity of clean seawater, which can be used as per plant or refinery requirements. For continuous operation, seawater intake structures require protective screens to prevent debris and marine life entering and damaging the pumps. These screens are often manufactured from 316L Stainless Steel (SS), (UNS S31603), however within the Middle East this grade of stainless steel alone is considered insufficient to provide long term corrosion resistance. To overcome this problem, Cathodic Protection (CP) systems are utilized to protect the submerged sections of these screens with the aim of extending the life of the stainless steel equipment. This paper will focus on the various design parameters required for CP of SS screens with particular attention on design and operational current density values and suitable protection criteria. The detrimental effects of overprotection will also be discussed. A suitable case study is used to highlight the available anode systems, methods of monitoring and how maintenance worries can be overcome by state of the art remote monitoring and control systems, capable of controlling large scale CP systems from a single location using a standard internet web browser.

Abstract:
Abstract Nowadays offshore structures are typically equipped with a sacrificial anode cathodic protection system (SACP). Design and application of SACP systems is well documented and most owners of marine equipment rely on this traditional approach. SACP systems for big structures result in a large amount of anodes increasing the mechanical load on the structure, installation cost (welding) and the release of soluble metals into the environment. Moreover, monitoring of the CP performance requires access to the anodes in order to verify the material consumption resulting in expensive ROV inspections. An innovative and more economical way to protect such offshore structures is by fitting these structures with an impressed current system (ICCP). This relatively new approach makes use of a restricted amount of insoluble Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO) anodes positioned at strategic locations on the structure. Monitoring and adjusting of the ICCP system can easily be performed from an accessible control panel. Most of the ICCP installations are even less expensive than SACP systems. The difficulty, however, is to find a correct design in order to guarantee an adequate protection level for the complete structure and to avoid local overprotection around the MMO anodes. In this article case studies will be discussed where a 3D simulation technology was used to evaluate the two different CP system designs for a semi-submersible oil rig. Long term effects like polarization behavior and consumption rate of sacrificial anodes is provided and simulation results are compared to current standards.

Abstract:
The theoretical work carried out following the intensive study of the research conducted so far regarding the consequences of divorce and their impact on children represents a major problem that is spread globally. A significant number of children are affected by exposure to parental conflicts related to aspects of the child's domicile and personal relationship schedule with the non-resident parent, legal and financial considerations, or the emotional refusal of at least one of the parents to accept separation. Studies analyzing the influencing factors on child development demonstrate that the time spent in the family is decisive for the evolution of personality and social integration, the adult model, and family relationships imprint the models of subsequent social development, as well as the individual's social success. Multiple studies, mainly transversal, that explored the perspectives of the subjects, discovered a series of determined factors of the problem, reporting inadequate parental care (insufficient or overprotection), parental inconsistency generated by parental separation, and negative parental attitudes. Patterns of pre- and post-divorce marital status determined varied internalizing disorder outcomes in children who experienced divorce. Parents' neglect and conflict, their growth and development difficulties from their own childhood, sexual and physical abuse, can determine the etiology for the development of borderline personality disorder. The documentation with the existing research generated reflections and the theoretical structuring of this material.
