Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose: Development of a model of management of tourist services, which would allow to effectively counteract the negative consequences of overtourism and ensure the sustainable development of the tourism industry. Design/Method/Approach: An analytical method was used - the use of statistical data, scientific publications, official reports of tourist organizations to analyze the current state of the tourist market and identify the main problems related to overtourism. A case study method for conducting a detailed analysis of specific examples of tourist areas that have been negatively affected by overtourism and evaluating the measures taken. Findings: It is proposed to consider overtourism as a complex problem caused by the uncontrolled growth of the number of travelers in popular territories, which leads to the deterioration of the quality of life of residents and tourist dissatisfaction, the destruction of cultural and natural heritage, environmental damage, infrastructure problems, deterioration. The definition of tourismophobia as an extreme manifestation of overtourism is substantiated; a conceptual model of their relationship is proposed; global approaches to the assessment and prevention of overtourism are generalized to improve the management of tourist services in conditions of excessive tourism. Strategies for regulating overtourism at various stages of the life cycle of tourist destinations have been formed - a strategy for stimulating the development of tourism, a strategy for preventive response, a strategy for limiting tourist activity; a mechanism for managing tourist services based on strategies to overcome overtourism in mature tourist destinations was formed and substantiated; a set of measures to prevent overtourism in tourist areas is proposed. Theoretical Implications: The theoretical significance of the research results lies in clarifying and supplementing the understanding of the essence of overtourism and tourismophobia, the accumulation of scientific knowledge in the field of studying the consequences of overtourism for the host territories. Practical Implications: The practical significance of the study lies in the modernization of the system of assessment and prevention of overtourism in mature tourist destinations. According to the results of the developed mechanism of regulation of tourist services, taking into account the strategies for overcoming overtourism, it is possible to respond preventively to the main risks of overtourism problems. The author's proposed structural models of the impact of tourism on the population and perception of the destination by visitors, a set of measures to prevent overtourism can be used as a tool for planning the development of tourism. Originality/Value: The conceptual and terminological apparatus of overtourism is specified, the aspects of its negative impact on destinations are determined, and the world experience of assessing the impact of overtourism on the host territory is summarized. Strategies for regulating overtourism at various stages of the life cycle of tourist destinations have been formed and, on this basis, proposals for the development and improvement of the mechanism for managing tourist services to prevent overtourism have been formulated. Research Limitations/Future Research: The problem of overtourism has turned from local to global in recent years. To solve it, further research and the formation of a set of measures are necessary, which takes into account the interests of all subjects of the tourism and entertainment industry, and will also allow to preserve historical, cultural and natural monuments that constitute the heritage of the entire world society. Abstract:
The term overtourism has generated considerable attention both in academic discourse and public debate. The actual or perceived impact of overtourism on destinations has significant ecological, social, and cultural consequences. However, a crucial question remains unanswered: What does overtourism do to a destination’s tourism industry itself? At the core of this question is whether overtourism is a self-limiting phenomenon or a cumulative one, and how precisely overtourism shapes patterns of quantitative or qualitative decline of a destination’s tourism sector. This article offers a conceptual discussion of the impact of overtourism on a destination’s local tourism sector by refining the latter stages of Butler’s tourist area lifecycle through forms of path decline known from evolutionary economic geography. By combining these two theorical approaches and refining the typology of path decline from evolutionary economic geography to the case of tourism under an overtourism scenario, this article suggests that, in the absence of exogenous changes due to policy interventions or public pressure, under an overtourism scenario, a destination’s tourism sector might contract, downgrade, dislocate, and eventually even disappear. Further research should focus on how to prevent these forms of path decline.

Abstract:
Purpose Overtourism is a term that has emerged in media over the past few years. Issues of carrying capacity that were limited to tourism sites have recently spread to places with no tourism background. The development of new technologies and network hospitality (NH) has enabled a blurring of roles. Residents and tourists are more than often using the same infrastructure and spaces creating tensions. This reinforces issues related to ownership and citizenship within a new context. However, there is only a limited number of studies linked to urban overtourism, and a categorisation of cities is necessary to apprehend the phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the current narratives of overtourism in cities and their impact on selected stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper uses a qualitative approach to investigate the case of several cities bearing signs of overtourism. It uses data from public and private sources (statistics, press, city marketing, etc.) from six cities of various size in Europe in which the media reported overtourism syndrome. The data were analysed through a thematic analysis, enabling a categorisation and a typology of urban overtourism. Findings Findings show that overtourism is a notion constructed from various aspects, including recently added supply sources such as NH and low-cost carriers. The urban morphology and branding strategy play a major role in the sentiment of overtourism. Research limitations/implications The study indicates the need for further research considering the urban destination in a holistic manner, rather than approaching it at the tourist site scale. A further quantitative research could test the model of urban overtourism taxonomy. Originality/value The developed urban overtourism typology and framework of analysis. The argument of using the urban morphology understanding and technology to address urban destination overtourism.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide a series of indicators to determine the limits to urban tourism growth, tourism gentrification and overtourism. The study addresses overtourism within the frame of urban liveability through a proxy analysis of tourism-relevant indicators for major European tourist cities. Design/methodology/approach Based on the various indicators, a composite overtourism indicator is derived. The following dimensions are considered for the composite indicator: total number of overnight stays per relevant tourist area in km2; number of museum visitors per population; average annual change in total nights between 2009 and 2017; and foreign nights per population. Findings Based on the results, Venice is the city with the highest degree of overtourism, followed by Florence, Seville and Lisbon. The remaining cities have a lower than average overtourism potential as indicated by the negative z-score. Research limitations/implications This study and the composite overtourism indicators are only a starting point that can lead to further research in the field. Recommendations for further studies include the assessment of visitor flow and overtourism at different times of the year and to expand the study to other European urban destinations. Practical implications The paper suggests that policymakers should use these indicators when managing urban tourism development and monitoring visitor growth. Furthermore, they can be a starting point from which to assess the impact of tourism on the quality of life of local residents. Social implications This study provides a starting point from which to assess the causes for social unrest tied to overtourism. If the city under study is found to have a lower than average overtourism potential, this indicates that there may be other social or psychological issues at play apart from sheer overcrowding. Originality/value To date, there has been no composite indicator that considered the different numerical aspects of overtourism altogether. This study provides a set of key indicators and a composite overtourism indicator to provide a preliminary appraisal of overtourism as a demand-side phenomenon with evidence from a range of established European urban destinations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The over-visitation of one of Europe’s largest tourism hubs is becoming a thorny problem for residents, combined with the dichotomy of tourism growth. In this regard, this study aims to examine the phenomenon of overtourism, as a productive machine that consumes its own resources by unfolding its roots and impacts in terms of economic, environmental, and social. So, Butler’s Tourism Area Life Cycle Model and the destination carrying capacity are addressed to enlighten the economics of overtourism. The second part focuses on the case of Venice and its tourism economic history, explaining how it exceeded its capacity. Along with these, the counterproductive deseasonalization policies, the tourism change over time, and their outcomes are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis explores how conflictive urban tourism phenomena (e. g. commercial gentrification) are (de-)problematized by governmental actors in Berlin. Hitherto, research on “overtourism”-governance has been dominated by good governance criticism; alternatively, governance of conflict-prone urban tourism is discussed as manifestation of an entrepreneurial or post-political urban governance. The thesis, however, seizes on the conceptual claim to understand the way in which tourism conflicts are framed, constructed or contested by governmental bodies as key aspect of governance. Employing the notion of governance as analytical lens to comprehensively describe problem-oriented governance settings, six key techniques used to (de-)problematize tourism-induced conflicts haven been identified (building on document analysis and an ethnography of destination management practice): 1. Mobilising history to naturalise conflicts; 2. Limiting the debate about conflict-prone tourism under moral aspects; 3. Defining the perception of problems statistically; 4. Adjusting accountability conceptually; 5. Addressing problems by means of participatory forums; 6. Achieving consensual solutions by notions (e. g. “sustainability”). Referring to Valverde the combination of the governance techniques is dubbed as Seeing Like a Tourist City: problems of conflictive tourism do not exist a priori, but are constructed in an active political-administrative way. Problems of conflictive tourism are framed by (in part contractionary) ways of knowing (morally, statistically, by legends); conflicts are represented in highly context-specific manners, they are denied by administrative proceedings and intimately linked to the availability of solutions. The combination of the above-mentioned governance techniques represents an “active administration” of tourism conflicts; the „busy“ but noncommittal governance remains in well-established patterns of (discursively) reconciling problems and solutions.

Abstract:
The purpose and aim of this study is to through carefully examining the phenomenon of overtourism by looking closely at other major European destinations such as Barcelona, Venice, Dubrovnik and Santorini, go in depth with how this phenomenonhas appeared and perhaps if it can be applied to our home city of Stockholm, and specifically the Old Town, “Gamla Stan”. By conducting qualitative interviews with both business owners and residents we hope to get a better understanding of how the impact of tourists applies itself and if there is a certain attitude towards this. Not only is it clear that this phenomenonhas brought changes to many destinations over the last few years. In Barcelona the attitude towards tourist has reached almost violent levels, with some cases of locals attacking tourists and targeting traveling group with slogans etc, We have to consider that in general, people that visit Gamla Stan, which is a major attraction for the millions of tourists that travel to Stockholm every year, almost certainly will spend at least some time on this island because of its central location and convenient walk-through possibilities. Besides the economic imprint this also affects the local residents, who are faced with a growing number of visitors, especiallyin the three summer months.

[eng] This research work focuses on analyzing if the term 'tourism-phobia' responds to Palma city's overcrowding due to tourism. The goal is to compare the social collectives criticism in Palma with the already published studies and the situation that exist in other European cities with the misnamed 'tourism-phobia'. The reasons behind the performances carried by Arran (root or base in catalan), two of them prosecuted by the law, are explained. The causes of tourism oversaturation are analyzed from the point of view of current researchers and it is related to the use that the term tourism-phobia has had in the Media. The causes of the extension of the use of the term in the Media promoted by the two great economic philosophies faced with the tourist business are analyzed: liberalism and modern Marxism. An in-depth study is made of the variables that affect the quality of life of residents in the city of Palma. In the field work, the empirical part has been dedicated to finding the reasons why there is a feeling of loss of the quality of life of the residents, due to overt-tourism.

As a result, cities are taking their first steps against this phenomenon: overtourism. There are several factors that residents and tourists find to be influenced by this obstacle. For example, real estate speculation, the difficulty of enjoying a certain space or even the hardship in finding local people and being able to absorb their traditions. Interviews were conducted with inhabitants of the metropolitan area of Lisbon, who are also tourists, in order to find out which aspects they think are most influenced by the impact of overtourism and what activities they would prefer to do when they are in an environment with excess of people. Several were those who said that they do not change the type of activity they do and do not even think about it when they are deciding the next trip. However, most prefer more modest places to be able to enjoy the place.

Abstract:
Abstract This book aims to scientifically address the paucity of combined research on tourism and degrowth by presenting case studies on the dynamics of degrowth from different parts of the world. By doing so, it comes to explore degrowth as a strategy towards balanced tourism development and as a small, locally owned, alternative to overdevelopment and overtourism. The book has 10 chapters and a subject index.

Abstract:
One of the specifics of overtourism is its uneven distribution in space and time. Defining an area where the manifestations are visible and the people living in the area are affected is important not only for the correct interpretation of objective numerical indicators, which are used to identify a potential problem, but especially for the application of appropriate measures to alleviate overtourism. The aim of this article is to define, based on direct knowledge of selected destinations in Karlštejn and Kladruby nad Labem, the behavior of visitors in the destination and map materials, the relevant tourist area for the study of overtourism, its impacts and manifestations. In this process, a demand-oriented approach is used. The area is defined both graphically in ArcMAP ESRI and numerically with the function Dissolve. In connection with the visual and numerical delimitation of the area, selected indicators of tourism pressure for both mentioned destinations are calculated. The values compared to corresponding values in other destinations suffering from overtourism indicate the presence of overtourism in Karlštejn.

Abstract:
Purpose – The growth of tourism in recent years has led to overtourism, which is present in many Mediterranean destinations. Coastal destinations are usually dealing with the consequences of seasonality and mass tourism during the summer season. Consequently, they have problems with their carrying capacity and various negative impacts of tourism. The well-being and quality of life of the local community depends on these impacts. According to this, the aim of this paper was to determine the attitudes of residents on the impact of tourism on their life in Zadar. The town of Zadar is a developed Mediterranean destination and the typical travel motive among tourists is the sea and the sun. It records continuous growth in tourist arrivals. Therefore, the purpose of the research was to examine how does tourism affect the residents’ life. Methodology – The research was conducted in 2022 on a sample of 821 inhabitants of the town of Zadar. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics and attitudes related to their satisfaction with the tourism development and the impact of tourism on the residents’ life. Findings – The research results showed that the residents are relatively satisfied with tourism activities in the town of Zadar. Despite the positive, primarily economic impacts of tourism, it is evident that there are also negative ones, including crowds, traffic, price increases, etc. Accordingly, residents support certain measures aimed at relieving the pressure of tourism in the town. Contribution – The results of this research indicate the increasing problems of overtourism faced by coastal destinations. These results should serve as one of the indicators for measurement and monitoring of tourism development. It is necessary to include them in the destination management of the town Zadar.
