Abstract:

The article investigates the relationship between Boccaccio's Genealogie and the exegesis of Ovid's Metamorphoses. For each character included in his genealogy, Boccaccio reports first of all the contents of the myth related to it and then the different literal and allegorical interpretations. The main sources are, besides Ovid, Paolo da Perugia and a mysterious Theodontius, who can be identified with a commentary on the Metamorphoses produced in the 11th or 12th century. The article aims to demonstrate that Boccaccio follows the method used by medieval exegetes of the Metamorphoses: rejecting the pagan contents of the myth, the commentators offered an allegorical and moralising interpretation, in fact rewriting the Metamorphoses as a 'medieval' work.

Abstract:

The paper focuses on Peleus as a marker character in narrative diegesis of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, i.e. a character who shifts the narrative action in the plot of the poem. This function is extensively articulated in Book 11 where Ovid creates a narrative interstice, that of Peleus in exile at the court of Ceyx at Trachis (met. 11. 266-409). Peleus and Ceyx’s episode is compiled by Ovid in the form of the dramaturgical episode which includes four characters acting and interacting (Peleus, Ceyx, Onetor, Alcyone). Ovidian reinvention of the 'facts of Peleus', a mythological subject of consistent poetic background, exemplifies the narrative organisation of the innovative epic of the Metamorphoses, and reveals some aspects of Ovid’s literary self-consciousness.

Abstract:

The reworking of Ovid’sMetamorphosesby Albrecht von Halberstadt, dating back to the end of the twelfth century, survives only in few Fragments. In this essay, I will analyse Fragment B, which contains tales from Book XI of theMetamorphoses, in order to assess Albrecht’s rewriting techniques, and his simplification of both matter and style. Indeed, Albrecht employs the middle style, while his Latin source was written in a rhetorical and elevated style. Albrecht’s Fragments will be compared with the Ovidian source and with theEneitof Heinrich von Veldeke, highlighting the features shared by the two rewritings of classical texts, which were both commissioned by the Landgrave Hermann of Thuringia.
