Abstract:
This study is designed to determine the trend of inaugural and public lecture presentations at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), from 1986 – 2019. A total of thirty-five hard copies of the inaugural and thirty-three public lectures were retrieved from the University Library for the research. The frequency of presentation, gender of the lecturers, discipline/programme, subject matter and trend of presentation of the lectures were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency tables, percentages, charts and graphs. Findings revealed that only a few lecturers have presented their inaugural lectures compared to the number of Professors in the University. More males had presented lectures, when compared to females. Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture and Management had low presentation. The subjects of the public lecture revolved around and demonstrated the societal challenges and issues at the time of the presentations. Recommendations were made primarily to ensure motivation and policy position on inaugural and public lectures presentation.

Abstract:
Knowledge sharing is the sharing of information with the sole aim of enlightening the target recipient (s) through meaningful exchanges that would produce needed results. Knowledge sharing has become a daily activity among students as they engage in daily face to face and mediated interactions where they collaborate and share ideas, understanding, information, skills and expertise with peers and instructors. It is against this phenomenon that this study sprouted. The study is a comparative investigation of knowledge-sharing patterns among students at Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri. The method of research adopted is descriptive and comprised registered undergraduates of both institutions’ libraries as a stratum. A questionnaire was designed and administered to 600 students, 300 from each institution and 290 and 287 retrieved in a usable state from FUTO and FPNO respectively, representing 96% return rate. The findings show an existence of knowledge sharing practice in both institutions and a similarity in the kind of knowledge usually shared. Pattern of sharing knowledge is different and peculiar to the nature of each institution. Whilst FUTO students share knowledge through group assignments, whatsapp and interactive sessions, FPNO students share through tutorial classes, reading groups and group assignments. The study revealed the hindrances to knowledge sharing in each institution and students’ suggestions of facilitating the practice for improved learning. Though hindrances to knowledge sharing revealed in the study may be considered peculiar to the institutions covered, they albeit represent relevant ideas which management of any institution can manipulate to enhance knowledge sharing in their institutions.

Abstract:
The International Congress on Health Sciences and Technology is an annual event. In 2017, the second in the series of the congress addressed several challenges in health with the theme “Appropriate Technologies for Health and Disease: An Innovative Approach to Drive Sustainable Healthcare Delivery.” The success of the deliberations opened a new vista of challenge which informed the choice of this year’s theme: “Innovative Technologies for Disease Prevention and Wellness Promotion.”
The theme became essential with the hindsight of the ravaging onslaught of preventable diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Heart Blood Pressure, Kidney and Liver diseases, ocular and dental diseases; to mention but a few, against humanity. The discourse on the scientific papers presented by renowned scholars from inside and outside Nigeria revolved around the adaptation of the ancient dictum, “Prevention is better than cure.” It critically examined, discussed, evaluated and proffered solutions to discovering innovative approaches, using new technologies to address the fundamental health problems of developing countries, particularly, Nigeria. Papers delivered at the Congress covered all aspects of public health.
With so many people dying of preventable diseases in Nigeria and around the African continent, the immerse benefits of the Congress can rightly be decided. Leaning on very poor resources, Nigeria and the whole of Africa need to tackle health issues at the very primary stage, which hinges on prevention and wellness promotion, and hence the theme.
The yearly Congress is a welcomed development which targets the local health needs of communities in Nigeria. We are anxiously looking forward to the fourth in the series which will take place from 7th to 9th of August, 2019. We welcome every willing participant!

Abstract:
An inclined box-type solar cooker employing tracking reflectors with dimensions 700mm x 440mm x 280mm, has been successfully designed and fabricated. The detachable reflectors, which were mounted on the box cooker, were suitably positioned in an east-west configuration on an inclined framework. This automatically tracks the apparent motion of the sun within 15 minutes time interval so as to align with the earth’s rotation when displayed under the sun. Thermal performance of the inclined box-type solar cooker has also been compared with that of a conventional box-type solar cooker whose dimensions and make are identical to the inclined box cooker. Testing of the tracking box type solar cooker has been carried out with load and without load conditions at Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State, located at Latitude 5oN, Longitude 7oE, Altitude 156m (Altitude 511ft) and 12km south of Owerri capital territory. Experimental results obtained from the field test show that the inclined box-type solar cooker with tracking reflectors attained temperature of 94oC, with efficiency of 93% and boiled water for 1hour 28 minutes. The conventional box-type solar cooker attained a temperature of 91oC, with efficiency of 90.9% and boiled water for 1hour 36 minutes. The tracking box cooker was found to be more efficient and effective than the conventional box cooker. Meteorological variables like Air Temperature, Irradiance, Relative Humidity and Wind speed were also obtained to investigate their effects on the performance of the box cookers.

Abstract:
An anaerobic bio-digester with electronically controlled stirring system was fabricated and tested using locally available materials. The experiment was conducted on a laboratory scale in Federal University of Technology Owerri. Cow dung obtained from an abattoir in Owerri and household biodegradable waste randomly collected from residential homes and eateries were used as the feedstock for this work. The feedstock was pre-fermented for a period of 10 days in an airtight bag before it was mixed with water in the ratio of 1:2 to form slurry that was fed into the digester. An Arduino system controlled timer with LED display screen was designed to control the on/off signal of a 2Hp electric motor powering the stirring arms. The programmable stirring timer device was set to run the electric motor for 30minutes at an interval of four hours to allow for even distribution of nutrients and microbes in the bio-digester. A control experiment was also carried out with non-automated stirring system. . It was observed that gas production in the control experiment reached its peak in fourteen days and the period was mired by fluctuating and less volume of gas production when compared to the main experiment where the gas production increased appreciably and steadily with maximum volume recorded on the tenth and eleventh day as contained in the results obtained. Model equations were generated for the two experiments and the wide variation in values of determinant factors (R2) in the two experiments is an indication that the automated stirring system with R2 = 0.97 performed better than the manually timed stirred trials with R2=0.88.

Abstract:
Purpose: Green (fresh) maize (Zea mays L.) provides food security and income to farmers especially when other crops are still in the field. However, research on green maize variety is scarcely reported in literature or information on the consumption or acceptability pattern of the developed maize hybrids. Unattractive colour, bad taste, kernel size and hard kernels are among factors that affect the level of fresh maize acceptability and subsequent consumption of genotypes in the South eastern part of Nigeria, therefore, the purpose of this work is to study the variation in sensory characteristics of hybrids generated from crosses between seven maize genotypes of two local varieties (Oka Mbaise and Oka Bende-white) and five improved varieties (DTMA-4, DMR-ESRY (POOL 18-SR), PVA SYM 8 F2 (PRO VIT A), POOL 66/ACR-91 SUWAN – 1- SR (QPM), DTMA – W, from IITA) was evaluated at the Centre for Agricultural Research, Federal University of technology Owerri and the sensory evaluation was done at different hostels in Umuchima, Ihiagwa and Centre for Agricultural Research, FUTO.Methodology: The methodology used in the field to develop these hybrids was the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Questionnaires were used to achieve the following palatability qualities measured; colour, kernel hardness, appeal, size and taste. The numerical scoring from the questionnaires was analysed using Genstat discovery 10th Edition. Results: The result of this work revealed that there were significant differences among the hybrids for kernel size and appeal. The cross between DTMA-4 and all other genotypes had the highest grain size (2.17) and was the most preferred by the respondents. The crosses between POOL 66/ACR-91 SUWAN – 1- SR (QPM) and Oka Mbaise; POOL 66/ACR-91 SUWAN – 1- SR (QPM) and Oka Bende-white; DTMA – W and Oka Mbaise; DTMA – W and Oka Bende-white; Oka Mbaise and Oka Bende-white had the hardest grain (3.00) and were least preferred by the respondents. Correlation matrix of the sensory evaluation revealed that grain size, colour and appeal were positively correlated while hardness was negatively correlated with appeal.Unique contribution to theory, policy and practice: In contribution to practice, the study recommends the cross OKA MBAISE X OKA BENDE-WHITE as it was highly preferred by the respondents.

Abstract:
Background: Multi-drug resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus Aureus (SA) is on the rise. The prevalence and antibiogram of MDR Staphylococcus Aureus among pregnant women attending Ante-Natal Clinics in Owerri, Imo State is being studied. Aim and Objective: The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) among pregnant women was studied using urine and High Vaginal Swab(HVS) from pregnant women attending antenatal clinics. Materials and Methods: The pregnant women attending at three hospitals; Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) Orlu and General Hospital Okigwe. A total of 1, 197 (619 Urine and 578 HVS) samples were used. Samples were analysed in the Microbiology Laboratories of the different hospitals, within thirty minutes of collection. Results: The results revealed that 121 (19.5%) of the Urine samples haboured S.aureus while 87 (15.1%) of the HVS were positive (mean: 17.4%). Antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed that 126 ( 60.5%) of the S.aureus isolated from both the Urine and HVS samples across the state were multidrug resistant . The predominant MAR index was 0.27 as 33.2% of isolates were resistant to 3 / 11 of antibiotics tested while the least 0.64 (7/11) was shown by 0.01% of the isolates. Generally, the highest resistance was to Ceftriazone (63.8%), followed by Gentamicin (63.0%), while Ciprofloxacin gave the highest susceptibility (95.2% ) followed by Ofloxacin (92.3%). Questionnaires revealed that 75.7% (87), 72.9%(43) and 76.5% (26) (mean: 75%) that tested positive for the organism at FMC Owerri, IMSUTH Orlu and General Hospital Okigwe respectively were asymptomatic. Result analysis revealed a significant prevalence of resistant S.aureus among these outpatients who were mostly asymptomatic and unsuspecting carriers. Conclusion: The need for routine surveillance of pregnant women for S.aureus to reduce maternal and child morbidity caused by the organism has therefore been revealed by this study. Abstract:
Satellite communication is a wireless means of transmission of intelligible signals/information. When properly utilized it will bring about a great and positive development on the economic growth of any nation. The Federal Government of Nigeria made a giant step in the communication sector by launching five satellites into space: NigeriaSat-1, NigComSat- 1, NigeriaSat-2r, NigeriaSat-X and NigComSat-1R. With adequate spatial information, informed decisions can be made by stakeholders and adequate steps taken to ensure the growth of the nation. Demand for training capacity building in space technology is increasing. Unfortunately, space technology is a relatively expensive field with ongoing research for affordable training approaches. This paper presents methods of building capacity by developing Demo Satellites that receive telemetry data with radiofrequency and internet of things communication protocol. Web Dashboard was developed for remote monitoring of ground station and for exploring mobility in data communication, Localization was achieved to also track the Demo Satellites and the ground station in real-time. It is shown that the implementation of a low-cost capacity building programme is not only possible but a goal that should be aimed at. Multiple segments in the design of the schematics produced can be reused. It presents a pioneer satellite constellation prototype that displays the capabilities of a satellite in solving some of the country’s challenges and creating awareness on space research and its trends.

Abstract:
Purpose Universities, as providers of knowledge and technology, have a key role in society based on knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to identify and describe the technological innovation centers (TICs) of the federal universities of Minas Gerais, Brazil, verifying if federal institutions of higher education in the state are meeting the attributions outlined in the Innovation Act. Design/methodology/approach In order to achieve the proposed objective, each one of the public and federal universities in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, was outlined as analysis units. The data sources used for this study are intrinsically secondary and were collected from the websites and TICs of each university. Findings As a result, it was found that all universities have TICs, and are inserted into the State Intellectual Property Network. Those aspects show that the universities have been searching for structure themselves by the new entrepreneurial mission of today’s educational institutions. Originality/value As noted in the literature, more research is needed to examine the efficiency and professionalism of TICs in the entrepreneurial activity of universities because the institutionalization of TICs is still recent and many TICs are currently in an improvement phase of their activities.

Abstract:
The paper dwells on the atmospheric pollution resulting from the vehicular exhaust discharge at the north gate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria. The vehicular traffic census took place at gate on the Ilesha-Akure high way passing in front of the gate for six days. The census was conducted using a digital tally and a stop watch for nine hours at thirty minutes interval daily. The tally was pressed to count each time a vehicle passed both to and from either direction along the road at a chosen point in front of the University north gate. A daily vehicular count was obtained from the ratio of total vehicles to the total time interval of nine hours. Thereafter the average vehicular exhaust discharge, pollution source strength and pollution concentration were determined. At the same time, a data logger was used to measure the meteorological elements of the temperature, the wind speed and the relative humidity of the weather daily. The relationship between the pollution source strength and concentration with the meteorological parameters obtained with data logger, speed and distance covered by vehicles were also determined. The average daily vehicle populations within the time interval being considered were respectively 8280, 8306, 7315, 7210, 8766 and 8491 for the six days in succession. The meteorological data analysis showed that the air relative humidity and wind speed increased with decrease in temperature especially when it rained. The source strength and concentration of pollution decreased with increase in the speed of vehicles and the distance moved indicating that pollutants dispersed faster into the air in the process.

Abstract:
An analysis aimed at discovering the appropriate structures for innovation and combining them in a system which maximizes the innovative capacity of a country requires the adoption of a variety of perspectives. An approach focusing on universities of technology and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in contemporary Australia contributes another, inevitably partial view but provides a striking illustration of the complexity and variety of the interrelationships involved. The impact of recent federal government policies on industry and the role of universities is described in the context of a recent election campaign. Universities of technology are identified as particularly well suited to interaction with business and industry. This is exemplified with reference to Swinburne University of Technology Theoretical frameworks that accommodate the complex interactions are discussed. Finally, the absolute necessity of positive individual and group relationships for successful outcomes is highlighted.

Abstract:
Housing finance in Nigeria is facing a lot of problems among which are inadequate mortgage finance, inaccessibility to other form of formal loans from other financial institutions due to stringent conditions attached to its access; urbanization brought about by ever increasing human population; and the economic recession being experienced in Nigeria. Housing development financing and shelter provision among the low and medium income groups become more critical because of lack of access to credit; and these groups constitute the vast majority of the urban households in Nigeria. There are no robust and pragmatic housing finance systems on ground. The reality on ground led to evolution of informal housing finance system of which thrift and credit cooperative is one. Against this background the paper examine the role played by the Federal University of Technology, Akure cooperative multi-purpose society in the provision of housing finance to its members, Secondary data were collected for this study through the use of structured questionnaire from 29.5% of its members. Secondary data were equally obtained from archival data of the society and analysed. The study revealed that majority of their members relied on collection of loans from the cooperative society for their housing development finance. The preferences for this form of finance were given as: ease of processing loan application; low interest rate charge on loan; and ease of amortization. The paper posits that government should intervene in housing finance through methods such as site and service scheme, provision of low interest loans with longer moratorium periods, and special political consideration and leverage be given to the housing need of low and medium income earners to ameliorate poverty among this group.

Abstract:
The omnipresence of technology will continue to challenge industrial and societal development into the next century. In the conviction that a technical university must take responsibility not only for technology research but also for its management, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology has, since the 1980s, been extending its activities to take this challenge into account. As a first step in this process, the discipline of Technology Management, directed towards graduate students, has been established within the Department of Industrial and Production Management. Its research focuses on the development of concepts and methods for integrating technology issues into modern concepts of general management. Working closely with industry, its research programme aims to close the existing gap between ‘technology reality’ and current concepts of company management, which still lack an adequate technology orientation. A second step focuses on management executive development in the ‘Leadership competences programme’. The third step consists of coordinating all Technology Management activities of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology under the umbrella of the newly-created Centre for Technology and Management.
