Abstract:
The manuscript is a review of the monograph The Grounds of Political Legitimacy by Fabienne Peter, the French political philosopher. Following the suit of the modern Anglo-American analytical political philosophy, the author of the monograph offers a metanormative approach to the analysis of legitimacy, focused on identifying the types of obligation on which it can be built. Legitimacy is interpreted in the book as a normative property of a political decision, which makes it binding for both the authorities and citizens. Based on the analysis and synthesis of possible foundations of legitimacy postulated in the existing normative theories, Peter comes to the conclusion that a political decision is made legitimate by the presence of an accessible cognitive authority. At the same time, it can be legitimate in the absence of such authority, if it is backed by the will of the people. According to the reviewer, Peter’s reasoning is purely speculative, and the result is trivial. It remains unclear why such a theory is needed at all, and whether it has any heuristic potential. The facts presented in the study do not speak for themselves. All the empirical material in the article comes down to agitation for Brexit, vaccination during Covid-19, and the Trump administration’s decision on migration. Having considered a number of alternative sociological and politological approaches to the analysis of legitimacy, the reviewer shows that all of them are superior to Peter’s theory in heuristic terms. His general conclusion is that the value of this kind of analytical political philosophy as a methodology for political analysis is questionable, and therefore Peter’s book is hardly of interest to political science.

Davis, Caroline. "Postcolonial literary publishing : Oxford university press in Africa and the Three crowns series." Thesis, Open University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.528253.

Full text
Abstract:
This study assesses the role of the Western publisher in the creation of African literature through an examination of Oxford University Press's Three Crowns Series, a previously overlooked series that existed from 1962 to 1976. Using archival evidence to examine the economics and the institutions of African literary publishing, and the patterns of assimilation and resistance in author-publisher relations, this study addresses some of the broader concerns of postcolonialism through a study involving the methodology of book history. Part I surveys OUP's history in Africa, and questions whether this supports the formulation of the Western publisher in Africa as an agent of a `civilising mission' or an agent of `cultural imperialism'. It charts how OUP established and maintained its dominant cultural and economic position in Africa in the 20th century, and describes the complex system adopted for the cross-subsidisation of economic and cultural capital. It also explores OUP's work in apartheid South Africa, and analyses the tension between scholarly publishing for the liberal academic establishment and publishing schoolbooks for Bantu Education. Part II examines the history and publishing strategy for Three Crowns, and considers the hierarchies of literary production and consumption that were instituted. It addresses the role of the publisher in selecting, editing, producing, promoting and distributing new postcolonial writing. Through reference to author case-studies, it assesses how the aesthetic and commercial value of African literature was negotiated, and explores the systems of inclusion and exclusion in operation. Case-studies of the publication of Wole Soyinka and Athol Fugard address the impact of the publisher in the construction of the authors' literary identities. In the case of OUP's Three Crowns series, this study concludes that the publisher exercised a decisive influence on the constitution of African literature institutionally as well as on the material form of the books, and that the processes of publication profoundly affected the reception and meaning of the texts.

Abstract:
One question for the burgeoning field of ‘philosophy of the humanities’ is whether there is anything that binds the humanistic disciplines together—whether the humanities ‘have a (communal) nature’. In recent years this question has received disparaging answers, for example in the work of Herman Paul. In this presentation I argue, against this disparaging answer. I argue that the humanities do have a (communal) nature, and that they are marked out by the objects they study. These objects have, in the main, three properties that the objects studied in the natural sciences lack, the properties (1) of being intentionality saturated, (2) of having meaning, and (3) of embodying value. I also indicate how the humanities differ from the social sciences. This presentation is based on my forthcoming book, that will be published by Oxford University Press, A Philosophy of the Humanities, written with Stephen Grimm (New York), and Rik Peels (Amsterdam).

Abstract:
The scholarly publishing ecosystem is being forced to adapt following changes in funding, scholarly review, and distribution. Taken alone, each changemaker could markedly influence the entire chain of research consumption. Combining these change forces together has the potential for a complete upheaval in the biome. During the 2019 Charleston Library conference, a panel of stakeholders representing researchers, funders, librarians, publishers, digital security experts, and content aggregators addressed such questions as what essential components constitute scholarly literature and who should shepherd them. The 70-minute open dialogue with audience participation invited a range of opinions and viewpoints on the care, feeding, and safekeeping of peer-reviewed scholarly research. The panelists were: James King, Branch Chief & Information Architect at the NIH; Sharon Mattern Büttiker, Director of Content Management at Reprints Desk; Crane Hassold, Senior Director of Threat Research at Agari; and Susie Winter, Director of Communications and Engagement, Springer Nature. The panel was moderated by Beth Bernhardt, Consortia Account Manager at Oxford University Press. Beth posed questions to the panel and each panelist replied from their vantage point. The lively discussion touched on ideas and solutions not yet discussed in an open forum. Such collaborative approaches are now more essential than ever for shaping the progress of the scientific research community. In attendance were librarians, editorial staff, business development managers, data handlers, library collection managers, content aggregators, security experts and CEOs.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Efficient engagement with ubiquitous digital content and interfaces presupposes a profound level of reading comprehension, a potential impediment for users within the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Existing literature demonstrates a correlation between diminished reading comprehension and deafness [1, 3], accentuating the formidable barriers faced by this demographic in accessing and understanding digital content and navigating an increasingly digital world. Despite decades of efforts to enhance digital accessibility for all users, limited research has focused on the specific challenges confronting deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, particularly those not adept with technology [2].This study aims to address this gap by investigating the daily interaction challenges faced by deaf and hard-of-hearing users with digital content and interfaces. Conducting a focus group with four deaf participants, we chose this method to facilitate rich, in-depth discussions in American Sign Language (ASL), a mode of communication familiar to the participants. We selected participants with educational levels from high school to those who had attained an Associate's degree seeking to get a range of possible challenges and investigating if their level of education might impact the challenges they face.Qualitative analysis of the focus group's dialogue unveiled insights into the technological struggles experienced by participants, coupled with their expressed needs for technological support. Three salient themes emerged: 1. Difficulties comprehending textual information across various tasks (email, online search, reading news, text messages, etc.), as unanimously reported by all participants; 2. Challenges associated with writing text and text entry, universally confirmed by all participants; and 3. Challenges in content and interface comprehension, influencing the installation, navigation, and utilization of various technologies, universally acknowledged by all participants. In this paper, we discuss the implications of these findings for researchers, technology developers, and digital content providers alike. We further explore avenues for future research along with potential technological enhancements aimed at mitigating the challenges confronting the deaf and hard-of-hearing population. The insights derived from this study are positioned to guide digital content developers, policymakers, and educators in effecting essential changes to amplify the accessibility of digital content and interfaces for deaf and hard-of-hearing users, both within the United States and on a global scale. Abstract:
Rethinking Urban Design Problems through Morphological Regions Ezgi Küçük¹, Ayşe Sema Kubat² ¹Urban Planning Coordinator, Marmara Municipalities Union ²Prof., Dr., Istanbul Technical Univercity, Faculty of Architecture, Department of City and Regional Planning E-mail: ezgikucuk89@gmail.com, kubat@itu.edu.tr Keywords: the Historical Peninsula, morphological regions, urban blocks, urban design, Beyazıt Square Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space The concept of urban square is a debated issue in the context of urban design practices in Islamic cities. Recognizing the relation between urban morphology and urban design studies in city planning and urban design practices is highly vital. Beyazıt Square, which is the center of the city of Istanbul, could not be integrated to the other parts of the city either configurationally or socially although many design projects have been previously planned and discussed. In this study, the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul is observed as an essential unit of the traditional path reflecting each civilization, namely Roman, Byzantium, Ottoman and Republic of Turkey that have been settled in the region. Transformations in urban blocks in Beyazıt region are elaborated through a series of morphological analyses based on the Conzenian approach of urban morphology. Morphological regions of the Historical Peninsula are identified and Beyazıt region is addressed in detail in terms of the transformations in urban block components, that are; street, plot and buildings. The effects of surrounding units which are the mosque, university buildings, booksellers and Grandbazaar on Beyazıt Square are discussed according to the morphological analyses that are applied to the region. Previous design practices and the existing plan of the area are observed through the analyses including town plan, building block, and land use and ownership patterns. It is revealed that existing design problems in Beyazıt Square come from the absence of urban morphological analyses in all planning and design practices. Through morphological regions as well as the conservation plans, urban design projects can be reconsidered. References Baş, Y. In 24th ISUF 2017 - City and Territory in the Globalization Age. Universitat Politècnica València, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/isuf2017.2017.5070.

Abstract:
The importance of the parcel (also referred to as ‘plot’ or ‘lot’) as one of the fundamental elements of urban form is well recognized within the field of urban morphology. It has been described as a basic element in the pattern of land divisions that works as an organizational grid for urban form. One of the distinctive features of the parcel is its dual character: it means both a legal unit defining property rights and a physical entity. In urban fabrics, these dimensions act together to drive the evolution of built space. In this paper, we will investigate the entanglements of the morphological and the legislative definitions of the term, with the aim to resolve these, we better can address and compare the vital layer of parcels in different urban contexts, by both identifying common properties of the notion parcels, and dealing with variations in its legal framework in different countries. What we aim to capture with such a comprehensive definition is the relation between urban form and generic functions, which mainly concerns the functions of occupation and movement, where the system of parcels can be identified as spaces that embed an affordance for occupancy in cities of most kinds. The intended outcome of the paper is to unveil the power of the dual nature of the parcel, bridging between spatial and non-spatial dimensions of cities, that is, more precisely, a potential to establish a stronger interface between urban design and planning practice. Warren, Frederika, M. Mariah Voutilainen, and Crystal Green. Spotlight: Wellbeing in Schools. HundrED, 2024. https://doi.org/10.58261/hdzc1151.

Full text
Abstract:
HundrED’s Spotlight: Wellbeing in Schools report is informed by a body of global research about student wellbeing, but focuses on a comprehensive study International Baccalaureate commissioned from The Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford University. That report, Wellbeing in Education in Childhood and Adolescence, served as the basis for HundrED’s investigation and call for education innovations that addressed the subjective wellbeing of students via holistic and evidence-based approaches. HundrED’s main partner in this project, International Baccalaureate (IB), is committed to putting into practice evidence-based education programmes that support the healthy holistic development of students. As such, the Spotlight on Wellbeing in Schools was conducted with the goal of identifying education innovations that address challenges to and foster the wellbeing of young people while they are at school. Equally important was the objective of drawing attention to the existing challenges to student wellbeing and barriers to implementing wellbeing practices in schools, as well as giving education innovators, experts, and young people the opportunity to share their insights about effective solutions.

Kessler, Matthew, Annsofie Wahlström, Hanna Weiber-Post, and Ylva Carlqvist Warnborg. Exploring the future of meat : navigating complex topics for better decision making. SLU Future food, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.55n5kd18dl.

Full text
Abstract:
This report draws on insights gleaned from putting together the project The future of meat – storytelling and dialogues for improved decision making from 2021-2023, integrating lessons from expert interviews, podcast production, and facilitated workshops. The project was initiated by the SLU Future Food platform at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), and developed and produced by TABLE, which is a food systems collaboration between the University of Oxford, SLU, and Wageningen University and Research. The aim of the project was to reflect on our own viewpoints and to foster mutual understanding and enhance the clarity of conversations around the role of meat and livestock in our societies and for our planet, rather than to intensify differences or argue over right and wrong. We also wanted to explore how stakeholders reach different conclusions and the implications of inaction. The diverse experts we engaged in the project (see Appendix) each aimed to contribute to a ‘good’, sustainable, and equitable future for food. However, due to differing values, professional and academic trainings, and geographic contexts, visions for the future of meat and livestock vary, and this variation is often intensified by the way information circulates in “echo chambers” across media ecosystems. As these experts articulated their visions, motivations, and pathways toward a sustainable food future, we learned that these varied viewpoints often complement rather than conflict with each other. Addressing multifaceted challenges like nutrition, biodiversity conservation, climate mitigation, animal ethics, and social justice indeed requires a spectrum of solutions. For example, rebalancing animal-sourced foods consumptions – increasing it in low- and middle-income countries and decreasing it in high-income countries – could improve health and environmental outcomes. Thus, the project underscores the necessity of embracing diverse perspectives and engaging in meaningful dialogues, forming the basis of a well-rounded strategy for the future of meat and livestock. Recognizing that meat holds different meanings for different people is crucial in moving towards a more sustainable and healthy food system. Adopting an inclusive approach is key to reducing polarization and enhancing the quality of decision-making in this sector. This report is thus divided into two main sections, each directed towards different target groups who contribute to a sustainable food future in different ways. The first section is intended for those with direct power to influence our food systems, including retailers, policymakers and food and agribusiness leaders. In that section, we offer key takeaways and highlight shared understandings and desires to inform decisions towards a more sustainable food future. The second section caters to educators and facilitators striving to improve the quality of dialogues on complex topics. Facilitating dialogues on complex topics is time and resource-intensive but pivotal for steering society toward a more sustainable, resilient, and just future. As mentioned above, the key findings of the project stem from the contributions of a diverse array of experts including scientists, food producers, CEOs, policymakers, and civil society representatives from across the globe, ensuring that the evidence collected in the project is comprehensive and not restricted to perspectives from any single, like-minded group. However, some large-scale, efficient meat producers, whose insights we sought, opted not to participate. This report does not rely on a systematic or comprehensive review of the existing scientific literature on the topics covered. Instead, it synthesizes contributions from the wide range of thoughtful experts, each known for their long-standing experience in this field, who generously shared their knowledge for this project. Finally, if you choose to apply learnings from our project in your work, we are eager to continue the conversation with you.
