Abstract:
In order to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, carbon-neutral methods of electricity generation are required. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have the potential to operate at high efficiencies, while liquid hydrocarbon fuels require little or no new infrastructure and can be manufactured sustainably. Using hydrocarbons in SOFCs introduces the problem of carbon deposition, which can be reduced or eliminated by judicious choice of the SOFC materials, the operating conditions or the fuel itself. The aim of this project was to investigate the relationships

The treatment of advanced nuclear fuels is relevant to the stabilisation of legacy spent fuels or nuclear materials and fuels from future nuclear reactors. Historically, spent fuel reprocessing has been driven to recover uranium and plutonium for reuse. Future fuel cycles may also recover the minor actinides neptunium, americium and perhaps curium. These actinides would be fabricated into new reactor fuel to produce energy and for transmutation of the minor actinides. This has the potential to reduce the long lived radioactivity of the spent fuel and reprocessing high level waste, whilst also

Sulfuric acid modified zirconia (H2SO4-ZrO2) is known as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for esterification. Abstract:
Cerias, appropriately doped with trivalent rare earth ions in particular, can have high oxide ion conductivity and are attractive as both SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) electrolytes and anodes. Here, four groups of candidate electrolyte materials were synthesised using a low temperature method in order to determine the effect of multiple doping on their microstructure and ionic conductivity. In an initial study, seven compositions of Ce0.8SmxGd[sub]yNd[sub]zO1.9 (where x, y and z = 0.2, 0.1, 0.0667 or 0 and x + y + z = 0.2) were synthesised and the properties of multiply-doped materials were com

A new reactor and a novel in-situ sampling technique were developed for the study of the synthesis of CeO2 powders produced from dissolved cerium nitrate salts. The reactor minimized particle recirculation and provided a highly symmetric and undisturbed plasma flow suitable for the analysis of the phenomena affecting the formation of CeO2 powders. The sampling probe provided in-situ sampling of in-flight CeO2 particles and allowed continuous sampling without cross contamination. The sampled particles were collected using a wet collection system composed of a mist atomizer acting as a scrubber

Doutoramento em Nanociências e Nanotecnologia<br>The main objective of this dissertation is the development and processing of novel ionic conducting ceramic materials for use as electrolytes in proton or oxide-ion conducting solid oxide fuel cells. The research aims to develop new processing routes and/or materials offering superior electrochemical behavior, based on nanometric ceramic oxide powders prepared by mechanochemical processes. Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) require electrolyte materials with high proton conductivity at intermediate temperatures, 500-700ºC, such as reported for

The research into materials for use as cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) is ongoing, with many different avenues being investigated. Copper based delafossites were studied for cathode side applications in SOFCs, as a novel and comparatively cheap material. The aim was to identify suitable materials with appropriate electrical conductivity, thermal, chemical and mechanical stability in air. Furthermore, understanding the behaviour of the delafossites during the thermal oxidation to spinel and copper oxide would be beneficial to further development of the materials. The structu
