Preoxidation/presulfidation conditions were determined to simulate scales formed on in-bed heat exchanger of PFBC boiler. Erodent velocity and density were varied to estimate the surface fracture energy of oxide/sulfide scales. Oxide scales formed on 347H and 310HCbN steels at 700°C were more protective than the oxide scale formed on T2 steel at 500°C. "Sulfide" scales were more fragile than the oxide scales.

Tests were conducted in a dynamic oxidation burner rig at 2000 and 2100°F (1090 and 1150°C), as well as in air at 2000°F (1090°C). The oxide scales and internal attack were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis (SEM/EDX) and optical metallography.
