Full textRecently, Zn1-xCoxO has been actively explored as a possible room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor, a key material for Spintronics. Nevertheless, its intrinsic magnetic properties remain still an open question. In this thesis manuscript, we report on the magnetic and resonance properties of ZnCo:O layers grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. From EPR and SQUID measurements performed at the L2MP laboratory, our study allows us to safely conclude on the existence of a huge magnetic anisotropy of an ‘easy plane’ type, and on the existence of nearest-neighbor Co2+ ions coupled antiferromagnetically. Moreover, we established, for the first time, that a combined effect of exchange and dipolar broadening is at the origin of the EPR linewidth in ZnO:Co

Full textThe first part is devoted to the magnetic study of the compounds Ca3Co2-xScxO6 and Sr3HoCrO6, especially low T magnetization steps. In the case of the polycrystalline samples of Ca3Co2-xScxO6, the magnetic measurements have shown an important modification of magnetization due to Sc3+ introduction which leads to a decrease of the ferromagnetic intrachain and antiferromagnetic interchain couplings. Nevertheless, low T magnetization steps are still observed, even for x equal to 0. 1. The synthesis of the single crystal Ca3Co1. 85Sc0. 15O6 has allowed to confirm these conclusions. For Sr3HoCrO6, similar phenomena have been observed. The magnetization step process is linked to a huge spin value in a prismatic site, together with a strong uniaxial anisotropy. Furthermore, these steps can be observed even for disrupted ferromagnetic chains. The second part deals with the description of a new complex intergrowth family deriving from the hexagonal perovskite. The synthesis of single crystals by flux method was undertaken in the Ba-(Co,Ga)-O system. A new layered series built from two elementary blocks : one original block [Ba(Ga,Co)8O11] related to one slice [Co4O8] sandwiched between two slices [BaCo2O3]and one block deriving from hexagonal perovskite. One structural relationship corresponding to the large family [Ba(Ga,Co)8O11][BaCoO3]n, where n represents the number [BaCoO3] slice, was established. This structural work was carried out by transmission electronic microscope and X-ray diffraction on single crystal

Full textThis thesis deals with the thermoelectric properties of transition metallic oxides. Misfit layered oxides, and ruthenium oxides with a perovskite-like structure, have been characterized by transport and magnetisation measurements. The high and constant Seebeck coefficient of these metallic compounds has been analysed by using the Heikes formula, generalized for system in which the spin and orbital degeneracies are considered. In the misfit oxides, we have compared cobalt-based and rhodium-based compounds. We show that the properties of the two families are very close. Since the low-spin state is always stable in the rhodium cation, this result confirms the peculiar stabilisation of the low-spin state of the cobalt cation in the CdI2-like layers. This configuration gives a high contribution of the spin and orbital degeneracies to the Seebeck coefficient of misfits. By substituting the cations of the NaCl-like layer by aliovalent and isovalent cations we can induce variations of the thermoelectric power. These variations are linked to the concentration of Co4+ cations and can be qualitatively described by the Heikes formula. The effects of stacking defects have also been studied. Finally, magnetic properties under high pulsed fields have been measured and do not show any magnetic ordering up to 40T. In the ruthenates, the high temperature thermoelectric power is also dominated by the contribution of the orbital and spin entropy. By cationic substitutions and by control of the oxygen content with have modified the oxidation state of the ruthenium cation. Contrary to the misfits, we observe a weak dependence of the thermoelectric power on the oxidation state. The low temperature thermoelectric power of SrRuO3 is different from that of CaRuO3. It shows an excess that can be related to the itinerant ferromagnetism in relation with electronic properties different from that of CaRuO3

Full textThis work deals with the opto-electronic and magnetic properties of zinc oxides and fluorides. In a first part, NIR absorption / reflection properties of aluminium and gallium doped zinc oxides powders have been studied. Dopant rates have been accurately determined for different experimental conditions and correlated with optical properties which were measured by diffuse reflection spectrometry. The same investigation has been performed on zinc fluoride but this compound could not have been doped by aluminium because of high chemical stability of aluminium fluoride. However, a structural study has been carried out on zinc hydroxyfluoride, which can be doped by aluminium. The last part of this dissertation deals with the investigation of carriers effect, which can be followed by diffuse reflection, on magnetic properties of cobalt doped zinc oxide. Free carriers have beeb no effect, only a paramagnetic behaviour has been observed
