ABSTRACT Smoke contains a mixture of harmful gases, chemicals, and superheated particles. Inhalation of smoke causes generalized hypoxia and airway inflammation due to impaired oxygen transport and utilization, as well as thermal and chemical injury in the airways. Generally, treatment is supportive with oxygen therapy and airway management, including chest physiotherapy, bronchodilators, and nebulization. Immediate oxygen therapy is mandatory for all suspected smoke inhalation patients and should not be delayed pending diagnostic test results or due to “normal” oxygen saturation readings that

Despite various warnings against smoking on oxygen therapy, some patients continue to smoke on oxygen and sustain burn-related injuries. These patients are frequently intubated due to concern for inhalation injury. We aim to characterize the injury patterns, morbidities, and mortalities associated with burns sustained while on oxygen therapy at home. Abstract Introduction Current estimates of home oxygen related burns, inhalation injury, and death may be significantly lower than actual incidence. This is problematic in scoping the issue as the American Burn Association continues its work in preventing home oxygen related fire injuries. A lack of diagnosis/injury codes precludes accurate estimates from national databases. The Burn Care Quality Platform (BCQP) database has a free text field for injury description which is optional to complete for burn centers.

For centuries, miners have been exposed to varied types and degrees of coal mine dust. Lung diseases in coal miners are caused by the inhalation, retention, and tissue reaction to the mixed constituents of this dust, which include carbon, silica, and silicates.
