Abstract:
Low levels of ozone air pollution have been shown to cause reductions in plant growth. It has been proposed that these reductions could translate into effects on a plant's competitive ability, and hence, on the inter-relationships of plants in a community. Experiments were carried out to determine if there was an effect of low levels of ozone on intra- and inter-specific competition of barnyardgrass (BYG), redroot pigweed (RPW) and green foxtail (GFT). Three ozone treatments (a filtered air control, and 75 ppb/7 hr and 150 ppb/3.5 hr daily) were applied to monocultures and binary mixtures in

Abstract:
The effect of shale gas activities on ground-level ozone pollution in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is studied in detail here. Ozone is a highly reactive species with harmful effects on human and environment. Shale gas development, or fracking, involves activities such as hydraulic fracturing, drilling, fluid mixing, and trucks idling that are sources of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), two of the most important precursors of ozone. In this study two independent approaches have been applied in evaluating the influences on ozone concentrations. In the first approach, the

Air quality monitoring is one of several important tasks carried out in the area of environmental science and engineering. Accordingly, the development of air quality predictive models can be very useful as such models can provide early warnings of pollution levels increasing to unsatisfactory levels. The literature review conducted within the research context of this thesis revealed that only a limited number of widely used machine learning algorithms have been employed for the modelling of the concentrations of atmospheric gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides etc. Despite this observation th

In the mid-1800s, monitoring networks were established to investigate atmospheric composition impacts, and the conditions giving rise to them. Currently thousands of sites collect high quality atmospheric composition measurements globally. Air pollutants, such as ozone (O3) and diesel exhaust particles, elicit oxidative stress in the lung. Antioxidants within the respiratory tract lining fluid (RTLF) protect the underlying tissue from oxidative injury. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the airway responses to diesel exhaust and ozone exposure in healthy humans, with the emphasis on inflammatory and antioxidant responses.
