Abstract:
In the field of cryptography, there has been a massive amount of enhancement in manipulating the plaintext which is unreadable, less prone to crackers and hackers, again manipulating this unreadable form to get back plaintext in some way. The Blowfish algorithm is a block cipher, has complex in structure in generating P-box and S-box entries using encryption algorithm. By simplifying the structure of encryption algorithm as well as F function with dynamic substitution, this can improve the performance by generating P-box and S-box entries of blowfish algorithm. In this paper, the proposed method simplifies the structure to produce P-box and S-box entries in order to reduce computational cost and demonstrates the performance of blowfish. The approach considers different security aspects namely EQ analysis, KS analysis, AV analysis, Entropy, Floating Frequency analysis and correlation of horizontally adjacent pixels in an encrypted image.

Abstract:
A review of the first scholarly edition of The Malachite Box [ Malakhitovaya shkatulka], a famous collection of tales (skazy) by the Russian writer Pavel Bazhov. Bazhov created his distinctive artistic world, which provided the basis for the subsequent emergence of the unique mythology of the Urals. Bazhov’s skazy are an example of stylised folklore, yet the stylisation is itself rooted in folklore tradition. This scholarly edition of The Malachite Box includes a comprehensive historical, literary and philological commentary. The editors examine the differences between all nine editions of The Malachite Box published in Bazhov’s lifetime and the first publications of the tales and their holographs and discover a number of minor textual discrepancies across all publications in question. The book has the tales arranged chronologically, which offers a chance to follow Bazhov’s creative evolution and get a better understanding of his connection with his time.

Abstract:
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a highly malignant tumor with poor prognosis, and the biomarkers for the early diagnosis, targeting therapy, and prognosis are still not clinically available. This study investigated the expression of forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a proteins in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tumor tissues and pancreatic tissues with and without benign lesions using immunohistochemical staining. Results showed that the positive rates of forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a protein expression were significantly lower in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tumors compared to peritumoral tissues, benign pancreatic tissues, and normal pancreatic tissues (p < 0.01). Pancreatic tissues with negative forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a protein expression exhibited dysplasia or intraepithelial neoplasia. The positive rates of forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a expression were significantly lower in cases with tumor mass >5 cm, lymph node metastasis, invasion to surrounding tissues and organs, and tumor–node–metastasis III + IV stage disease compared to cases with tumor mass ⩽5 cm (p < 0.05), no lymph node metastasis (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively), no invasion (p = 0.003 and p = 0.004, respectively), and tumor–node–metastasis I or II stage disease (p < 0.05). Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed that pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients with negative forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a expression survived significantly shorter than patients with positive forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a expression (p = 0.000). Cox multivariate analysis revealed that negative forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a expression was an independent poor prognosis factor in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients. The area under the curve of a receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.642 for forkhead box P1 (95% confidence interval: 0.553–0.730) and 0.655 for forkhead box O3a (95% confidence interval: 0.6568–0.742). Loss of forkhead box P1 and forkhead box O3a protein expression is associated with carcinogenesis, progression, and poor prognosis in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas.

Abstract:
This these is interested on distinguishing between direct effects of nuclear receptors and those mediated by signal transduction pathways on transcription of hormone-responsive genes and cell proliferation. For this, it stablies expressed in the PR-negative T47Dy breast cancer cell line, tagged forms of the PRB mutated at regions involved either in DNA binding, in its ability to interact with ER and activate the c-Src/Erk cascade, or the recruitment of coactivators. Gene expression in response to progestins in cell lines expressing wild type or mutant PRB has been studied by a 750 genes-containing breast cancer customized cDNA microarray. Our results define the subsets of hormoneresponsive genes regulated by the different modes of action of PRB, as well as genes where the nuclear and nongenomic pathways of PRB cooperate. Finally, it has focused the attention on the involvement of Cyclin D1 gene (CCND1) activation by hormone on cell proliferation, the mode of action of PR on its activation and the analysis of promoter regions where PR binds.

Peter, Stephanie Andrea. "Thinking outside the box : processing instruction and individual differences in working memory capacity." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2016. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/18092/.

Full text
Abstract:
Processing Instruction is a pedagogic intervention that manipulates the L2 input learners are exposed to in the classroom. Proponents of this intervention claim that it poses a minimal strain on learners’ processing resources. While there has been extensive research on the benefits of Processing Instruction in general and the role of individual differences in particular, no conclusive evidence has been found regarding the role of individual differences in Working Memory Capacity. To explore the question whether Processing Instruction is equally beneficial for learners at different points of the Working Memory Capacity spectrum, a case study on the effects of computer-delivered Processing Instruction has been conducted. German switch prepositions were the target feature and students’ instructional gains were evaluated through sentence- and discourse-level tasks in a pre- and post-test design. Additionally, students’ on-task performance was recorded during instruction. The Working Memory Capacity scores were supplemented with questionnaire data on potential mediating variables such as motivation, anxiety, personality, and aptitude. The analysis of individual learner profiles addressed yet another gap in the literature: Robinson’s (2001) work, Snow’s (1989) aptitude-treatment interaction concept, and Dörnyei & Skehan’s (2003) perspective on individual differences all demand a look at the bigger picture. Yet much of the Second Language Acquisition research to date has operationalised Working Memory according to Baddeley & Hitch’s (1974) model, using quasi-experimental research designs – which usually fail to capture the complex and dynamic nature of Working Memory. This study addressed this gap with attention to the operationalisation of Working Memory, the analysis of task demands as well as perceived difficulty, and a focus on the interplay of several learner variables. Results seem to support the importance of Working Memory for Second Language Acquisition, at least in the short run. However, they also show a clear impact of participant-treatment interactions which might not have become evident in a group-comparison study.

Bruns, Morgan Chase. "Propagation of Imprecise Probabilities through Black Box Models." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/10553.

Full text
Abstract:
From the decision-based design perspective, decision making is the critical element of the design process. All practical decision making occurs under some degree of uncertainty. Subjective expected utility theory is a well-established method for decision making under uncertainty; however, it assumes that the DM can express his or her beliefs as precise probability distributions. For many reasons, both practical and theoretical, it can be beneficial to relax this assumption of precision. One possible means for avoiding this assumption is the use of imprecise probabilities. Imprecise probabilities are more expressive of uncertainty than precise probabilities, but they are also more computationally cumbersome. Probability Bounds Analysis (PBA) is a compromise between the expressivity of imprecise probabilities and the computational ease of modeling beliefs with precise probabilities. In order for PBA to be implemented in engineering design, it is necessary to develop appropriate computational methods for propagating probability boxes (p-boxes) through black box engineering models. This thesis examines the range of applicability of current methods for p-box propagation and proposes three alternative methods. These methods are applied towards the solution of three successively complex numerical examples.

Abstract:
AbstractGrowth charts play a crucial role in the evaluation and surveillance of paediatric populations, serving as indispensable tools for paediatricians and public health researchers. The development of these growth charts for fetal parameters has been extensively used in recent decades. However, investigation of placental parameters and their relationship with obstetric outcome has been relatively neglected, resulting in a significant gap in understanding their biological significance. This study presents an alternative approach for constructing reference growth curves specific to the placental parameter, Diameter 2. Our methodology uses the generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS), offering distinct advantages over traditional quantile regression methods. One of the key advantages of GAMLSS is its flexibility to accommodate any statistical distribution, allowing for the modelling of various parameters that characterize the distribution of the response variable. Through the application of our proposed methodology, we demonstrated that by using P-splines as a smoothing function and Box-Cox t (BCT) as a distribution, we can achieve a representative growth curve for the Diameter 2 of the placenta throughout gestational age (GA). The resulting models demonstrated high representativeness, with $$R^2$$ R 2 values of 0.7608 and 0.7673 and AIC scores of 7953 and 7946 for the best two models, respectively. Moreover, our approach has the ultimate goal to facilitate early diagnosis of fetal complications, thereby providing valuable assistance to healthcare professionals.

Abstract:
<p>The number of bridges in Japan over 50 years old is rising and will increase over the next 30 years. Simultaneously, the workforce for bridge maintenance is shrinking owing to a declining population, making strategic planning for maintenance urgent. Small bridges (spans under 5 m) are the most prevalent type of bridge in Japan. This study investigates the influence of cover concrete on the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) box culverts used as short-span bridges through both experimental and analytical methods. Two specimens were subjected to static loading. The results showed that the impact of the cover concrete on the load-carrying capacity was minimal. Furthermore, cracking behavior was successfully reproduced using three-dimensional FEM. These results suggest that RC box culverts generally have sufficient load-carrying capacity, provided that the reinforcement anchorage is intact, even if the reinforcement is corroded and exposed.</p>

Abstract:
<p>In recent years, the use of steel elements in building constructions in seismic regions has increased. Although steel structures have generally performed well during earthquakes, their seismic vulnerability significantly depends on the performance of their components. In this research, the results of two full-scale steel beam-to-column moment connections tested under cyclic loading are discussed. The prototypes were made up of box columns and I-shaped beams with an exterior beam-to-column joint. The physical full-scale cyclic testing was corroborated through nonlinear finite element (FEA). Abstract:
<p>The load carrying capacity of the box girder bridge with advanced corrosion due to salt damage was estimated from the visual inspection results of cross section during demolition work. Fiber analysis was carried out to simulate the residual structural performance. The influence of corrosion was considered by reducing mechanical properties such as yield stress in constitutive model. Then, numerical results were validated with loading test results done before demolition work. As a result, numerical result coincided with loading test results. This result implies that we are able to estimate residual structural performance of significantly corroded PC bridge if detailed corrosion distribution is obtained in some way.</p>

<p>In order to clarify the influence of differences in environmental and material parameters on the numerical results regarding the sunshine temperature field of concrete structures, this study selects a concrete box girder as an example to reveal the sensitive parameters and proposes a sunshine temperature field simulation method. Based on the proposed method, considering the influence of sunshine shadows, the sunshine temperature field of a concrete box girder is analysed, and the vertical temperature gradient and average temperature of the section are adopted as evaluation indicators to carry out multi-parameter sensitivity analysis on the sunshine temperature field simulation. The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the effect of variations in model parameter values on the results of the simulation, and in order to provide reasonable suggestions and references for parameter value selection in future related studies.</p>

Abstract:
<p>The webs of continuous box girders for bridges often consist of slender class 4 steel plates that are subjected to bending and internal shear forces. The local buckling is decisive for the design of the girder web, which contains one or more stiffeners. The web thickness (and thus the steel consumption) can be considerably reduced by a suitable stiffening solution, which is determined by the type, number and position of the stiffeners. Eurocode EN 1993-1-5 [1] provides buckling verification methods for the interaction between shear and bending compression normal stresses of stiffened plates. In this paper, this verification has been used to compare the effectiveness of different stiffening solutions for a range of web heights and stress states typically encountered in medium to large span (80 to 200 m) bridge box girders. Recommendations are given for optimal solutions depending on the effectiveness of the stiffener and the web thickness.</p>

Abstract:
Detailed description of the 3rd instar larva and pupa of Phyllognathus dionysius is described along with notes on biology and distribution. Some beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae are economically important as crop pests. Grubs of P. dionysius are coprophagus and polyphagous and known to feed on roots of jowar (Sorguhm bicolor), bajra (Pennisetum glaucum), maize (Zea mays), turmeric (Curcuma longa), sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and paddy (Oryza sativa) while adults are nocturnal in habit and feed on foliage of Ficus sp. For this study, grubs of P. dionysius were collected from the Bor forest of Maharashtra, central India. Collected grubs were reared in rearing pots in the laboratory under optimum temperature and humidity. Our knowledge of developmental stages of scarabs lags behind our knowledge of the adults especially in the fields of morphology and taxonomy. In this study, we provide brief diagnostic characters for identification of the immature stages of P. dionysius along with the biology. Life cycle of P. dionysius was completed in 145–163 days with prepupal period of 24–36 hours and pupal period of 9–11 days.

Kantar. Testing the impact of overt and covert ordering interventions on sustainable consumption choices: a randomised controlled trial. Food Standards Agency, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.gtc137.

Full text
Abstract:
The production, transportation, storage, and waste of food products have a significant impact on the environment. The UK government’s National Food Strategy (Dimbleby, 2021), an independent review of England’s entire food system, recommends that multiple interventions are required for healthy and sustainable diets to create a long-term shift in our food culture. Online supermarkets constitute an increasingly large share of grocery shopping, 12.6% of grocery sales were made online in March 2022 compared with just 8.0% three years ago (McKevitt, 2022). Therefore, it is important to understand how interventions in online shopping environments affect consumer choices in relation to the sustainability of products. We investigated whether a specific choice architecture intervention – displaying products in an ascending order of their carbon footprint – in an online supermarket environment can shift consumer choices towards more sustainable options compared to when products are randomly ordered. We also examined whether the effect of the ordering intervention differs when the ordering is overt, where information about the ordering is explicit, compared to when it is covert and participants are not told about the ordering. We conducted a three-arm parallel-group randomised trial using a sample of 1842 online panel participants from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, who had previously shopped online, representative of age, gender and ethnicity. Participants completed a shopping task for a meal for two, choosing one product from each of the six prespecified product categories in a simulated online supermarket environment. Six products were shown in a vertical list on each product category page. Products were randomly ordered for the control arm, whereas the products were ordered by carbon footprint in the covert and overt ordering arms. In addition, in the overt ordering arm, the following statement was displayed in a box at the top of each product page: “The products on this page have been ordered from the most environmentally sustainable to the least environmentally sustainable. This is to make it easier for you to choose a more sustainable product if you wish.”. Participants were randomly allocated to one of the three arms with equal probability. The primary outcome was whether one of the three most sustainable products was chosen in each product category. Participants were blinded to the objective of the trial and experimental conditions, other than their own, until the debrief at the end, and our analyst was blinded to the assignment of experimental arms during initial data analyses. The key findings are as follows: • Covert ordering did not affect consumer choices, because there was no effect of a product's position in the list on choice, contrary to evidence in the literature. • Choices seemed to be mainly driven by prior preferences, suggesting preferences for grocery products might be too ingrained to be changed by subtle rearrangements of choice architecture like the ordering interventions. • There was no significant difference between the effects of covert and overt ordering interventions. • Only a small proportion of people correctly identified that the products were ordered by sustainability when the information was explicitly given, highlighting the difficulty of conveying information in the online shopping environment. There was no effect of the covert ordering intervention on the probability of choosing more sustainable products versus less sustainable products, compared with the control arm (OR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.88-1.07, p-value = 0.533). Furthermore, our hypothesis that the effects of the covert ordering intervention and overt ordering intervention do not differ could not be rejected (p-value = 0.594). Contrary to our assumptions, analysis of the control condition showed that the positioning of products had no effect on choices, which may explain why re-ordering products also had no effect. In the overt condition, only 19.5% of people correctly answered that the products were ordered according to sustainability in a follow-up question, suggesting that they didn’t notice the statement. The results suggest that preferences for grocery products might be too ingrained to be changed by subtle rearrangements of choice architecture like the ordering interventions. Choices seemed to be mainly driven by prior preferences over the options, rather than by their position on a list, and the majority of participants did not notice a statement about the sustainability ordering in the overt-ordering arm, despite it being pinned to the top of every page. Nevertheless, the results could be specific to the details of the trial design in this study; therefore, whilst we did not find a significant effect we cannot rule out the potential for ordering interventions to cause an effect. In particular, it would be worth determining how to get participants to pay more attention to the statement about the sustainability ordering and then investigating how people respond to it. As this is the first study looking at the effects of product ordering interventions based on the environmental impact in an online shopping environment, more research is needed to strengthen the evidence base and our understanding of whether, and in what context, such interventions could work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We believe the climate crisis will be resolved in cities. Today, while cities occupy only 2% of the Earth's surface, 57% of the world's population lives in cities, and by 2050, it will jump to 68% (UN, 2018). Currently, cities consume over 75% of natural resources, accumulate 50% of the global waste and emit up to 80% of greenhouse gases (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). Cities generate 70% of the global gross domestic product and are significant drivers of economic growth (UN-Habitat III, 2016). At the same time, cities sit on the frontline of natural disasters such as floods, storms and droughts (De Sherbinin et al., 2007; Major et al., 2011; Rockström et al., 2021). One of the sustainability pathways to reduce the environmental consequences of the current extract-make-dispose model (or the "linear economy") is a circular economy (CE) model. A CE is defined as "an economic system that is based on business models which replace the 'end-of-life' concept with reducing, alternatively reusing, recycling and recovering materials in production/distribution and consumption processes" (Kirchherr et al., 2017, p. 224). By redesigning production processes and thereby extending the lifespan of goods and materials, researchers suggest that CE approaches reduce waste and increase employment and resource security while sustaining business competitiveness (Korhonen et al., 2018; Niskanen et al., 2020; Stahel, 2012; Winans et al., 2017). Organizations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Circle Economy help steer businesses toward CE strategies. The CE is also a political priority in countries and municipalities globally. For instance, the CE Action Plan, launched by the European Commission in 2015 and reconfirmed in 2020, is a central pillar of the European Green Deal (European Commission, 2015, 2020). Additionally, more governments are implementing national CE strategies in China (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2018), Colombia (Government of the Republic of Colombia, 2019), Finland (Sitra, 2016), Sweden (Government Offices of Sweden, 2020) and the US (Metabolic, 2018, 2019), to name a few. Meanwhile, more cities worldwide are adopting CE models to achieve more resource-efficient urban management systems, thereby advancing their environmental ambitions (Petit-Boix & Leipold, 2018; Turcu & Gillie, 2020; Vanhuyse, Haddaway, et al., 2021). Cities with CE ambitions include, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Toronto, Peterborough (England) and Umeå (Sweden) (OECD, 2020a). In Europe, over 60 cities signed the European Circular Cities Declaration (2020) to harmonize the transition towards a CE in the region. In this policy brief, we provide insights into common challenges local governments face in implementing their CE plans and suggest recommendations for overcoming these. It aims to answer the question: How can the CE agenda be governed in cities? It is based on the results of the Urban Circularity Assessment Framework (UCAF) project, building on findings from 25 interviews, focus group discussions and workshops held with different stakeholder groups in Umeå, as well as research on Stockholm's urban circularity potential, including findings from 11 expert interviews (Rezaie, 2021). Our findings were complemented by the Circular Economy Lab project (Rezaie et al., 2022) and experiences from working with municipal governments in Sweden, Belgium, France and the UK, on CE and environmental and social sustainability.

Circulair water in de wijk : verkennend onderzoek naar de potenties en belemmering van decentrale systemen voor behandeling en hergebruik van afvalwater en regenwater in woonwijken. Abstract:
