Abstract:

Abstract:
Neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease affect millions of people around the world. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of neurodegenerative disorders, cancer and ischemia. The brain is particularly vulnerable to oxidative damage because of its high utilisation of oxygen, high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, relatively high levels of redox transition metal ions and low levels of antioxidants. Oxidative stress occurs due to an imbalance in the pro–oxidant and antioxidant levels. Reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) is a collective term used for free radicals and related molecules, promoting oxidative stress within cells and ultimately leading to neurodegeneration. Antioxidants counteract the excess in ROS/RNS, and is therefore of interest in the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders. Monoamine oxidases, especially monoamine oxidase B (MAO–B), also play an important role in neurodegenerative disorders. MAO–B is the main enzyme responsible for the oxidative deamination of dopamine in the substantia nigra of the brain. By inhibiting MAO–B, dopamine is increased in the brain providing symptomatic relief in Parkinson’s disease. The focus of the current study was to synthesise multifunctional compounds that could be used in the treatment and/or prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study flavonoids were selected because of their wide spectrum of biological activities, including antioxidant activity and its monoamine oxidase inhibition. Flavones and chalcones are both classified under flavonoids and both structures were included. The amantadine moiety was included because of its known ability to inhibit calcium flux through the N–methyl–D–aspartate (NMDA) receptor channel. Six amantadine–flavonoid derivatives were synthesised using standard laboratory procedures and structures were determined with standard methods such as NMR, IR and mass spectrometry. The synthesised compounds were tested in a selection of biological assays, to establish the relative antioxidant properties and MAO inhibitory activity. The biological assays employed to test antioxidant properties were the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and nitro–blue tetrazolium (NBT) assays. The TBA assay relies on the assessment of lipid peroxidation, induced via hydroxyl anions (OH), generating a pink colour with the complex formation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and TBA, which is measured spectrophotometrically at 532 nm. The principal of the NBT assay is the reduction of NBT to nitro–blue diformazan (NBD), producing a purple colour in the presence of superoxide anions (O2 –). The synthesised compounds were also evaluated for their MAO inhibitory activity toward recombinant human MAO–A and -B and inhibition values were expressed as IC50 values. The experimental data obtained in the NBT and TBA assay indicated a weak but a significant ability to scavenge O2 – and OH. In the NBT assay N–(adamantan–1–yl)–2–{3–hydroxy–4–[(2E)– 3–(3–methoxyphenyl)pro–2–enoyl]phenoxy}acetamide (6) had the best results with a 50.47 ± 1.31 uM/mg protein reduction in NBD formation, indicating that the hydroxyl group contributed to activity. The synthesised compounds were compared to the toxin (KCN) with a reduction in NDB formation of 69.88 ± 1.59 uM/mg protein. Results obtained from the TBA assay indicated that the flavone moiety had better OH scavenging ability than that of the chalcone moiety with N–(adamantan–1–yl)–2–[(5–hydroxy–4–oxo–2–phenyl–4H–chromen–7– yl)oxy]acetamide (3) showing the best activity at 0.967 ± 0.063 nmol MDA/mg tissue. The synthesised compounds were compared to the toxin (H2O2) 1.316 ± 0.028 nmol MDA/mg tissue. None of the test compounds could be compared to the results obtained with Trolox®. The IC50 values obtained for inhibition of recombinant human MAO indicated that the chalcone moiety (N–(adamantan–1–yl)–4–[(1E)–3–oxo–3–phenylpro–1–en–1–yl]benzamide (5)) showed the best inhibition of MAO–B with an IC50 of 0.717 ± 0.009 M and of MAO–A with an IC50 of 24.987 ± 5.988 M. It was further confirmed that N–(adamantan–1–yl)–4–[(1E)–3–oxo–3– phenylpro–1–en–1–yl]benzamide (5) binds reversible to MAO–B and that the mode of inhibition is competitive. Docking studies revealed that N–(adamantan–1–yl)–4–[(1E)–3–oxo–3–phenylpro– 1–en–1–yl]benzamide (5) traverses both cavities of MAO–B with the chalcone moiety orientated towards the FAD co–factor while the amantadine moiety protrudes into the entrance cavity.

Ester, Helen. "The Media and John Howard P.M.: The Canberra Press Gallery 1996-2007." Thesis, Griffith University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367561.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of the Howard government’s media management strategies on the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery (FPPG) and its capacity to fulfil the quasi-institutional fourth estate role of independent over-sight of the parliament and the executive government. Although the relationship between politician and journalist in any parliamentary democracy is neither easy nor harmonious, tenets of open governance demand that, at the very least, this relationship is functional. The evidence in this thesis shows that this functionality was tested to its limits under the Howard government. Chapter 1 begins with the development of questions about the Howard government’s media strategies, their impact on the Canberra fourth estate and the role of more intense government media management, new technologies and the co-location of executive government and press gallery in Parliament House. Answers are sought with multi-method research including historical research, documentary analysis, case studies and elite interview techniques*. Twenty-five journalists from the FPPG’s thirty-three mainstream bureaus participated in interviews and their willingness to answer open-ended questions ‘on the record’ added valuable empirical data. Chapter 1 concludes with a comprehensive review of relevant literature and a brief survey of the further chapters. Chapter 2 is an historical analysis that explores key continuities and changes in executive-media relations across a number of Australian federal governments located in Canberra since parliament opened there in 1927 in order to identify the drivers or levers on hand when the Howard government took office in 1996. Particular attention is paid to strategies used under the Curtin, Menzies, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke and Keating governments. Chapters 3-5 examine issues raised by government-FPPG relations during the Howard years. ‘The Interface’ (Chapter 3) deals with the effect of increasing numbers of ministerial media staff and closer control of face-to-face fora such as interviews, press conferences and background briefings. ‘Spinning along the Information Highway’ (Chapter 4) explores the reduction in access to political news by gallery journalists because new digital media technologies increase government control of the flow of political information, particularly by the deployment of sophisticated modern surveillance techniques. ‘News values in the New Parliament House’ (Chapter 5) examines changes in conventions arising from the new building’s architecture that facilitated the implementation of policies designed to maximise executive control of political news. Chapter 6 provides case studies of key moments in the interaction between the government and the gallery that demonstrate the executive’s powerful capacity to manipulate a relationship based only on convention and goodwill. The first study concerns the 2003 visit of US President Bush and the unprecedented way the Australian executive overrode longstanding conventions in relation to the FPPG and the parliament. The second concerns former Treasurer Peter Costello and the ‘Dinnergate’ episode that kept public information off the record for years. This thesis adds a fresh Australian perspective to international political communication scholarship by filling a gap in this literature where the self-reflexive views and experiences of political journalists working at the interface between the public and government have been overlooked. This study reveals the extent to which the Howard government used the executive’s latent power over media relations to maximise control over flows of information, and how its misuse can work to the detriment of parliament as well as political journalism. This thesis concludes that the Howard years bound and constrained Australian political communication because an increasingly dominant government executive successfully exploited the Canberra fourth estate’s poorly defined role and status. Whilst this study also confirms the need for reform in government-media relations, it is equally clear that it would be politically naïve to expect any government (or opposition) to develop the political will to tamper with conventions demonstrably weighted in the executive’s favour. However, the unpalatable media management regime of the Howard years also triggered an historic coalition of commercial and public media which conducted an independent audit of free speech in Australia (Moss 2007), and called for more explicit, legislative recognition of ‘Australia’s Right to Know’. This study argues that this presents a significant opportunity as any change for the better would not only need the pro-active goodwill of parliamentarians outside the citadels of party-executives, but also the media’s reassessment of the manner in which they resource Canberra political journalism. This thesis concludes that apart from issues relating to an imbalance of coverage in favour of the executive and away from the parliament, there are other weighty matters relating to the status of the FPPG worthy of the media’s further consideration—such as the status of media bureaus within parliament house (now that of ‘licensees’), and the fact not only is there no constitutional basis for the ‘right to know’ in Australia but there are few if any, applicable conventions in ‘either British constitutional precepts or Australian news media practice’ (Lloyd 2001, p.1).

Abstract:
The purpose of this work focus on the aesthetics exploration of the illustrative character of the poetry book The awaken Beauty, from the poetess Adília Lopes. It begins with an interpretative reflection about the author and its work, by analyzing some of its symbolic patterns, of hers poetic expression, considering also the new patterns, which the new millennium and its consumption society leads us to. In that kind of sense the pictorials possibilities are represented and explored, in an illustrative way, that adjusts to the allegoric world, for which the author sends us in The Awaken Beauty. Representations that are born again from the fairy tales and the mythical or fable stories, projected now for Contemporary Society.

Kahl, Robert M. "The eschatological Jesus : early Christology as interpreted by Reginald H. Fuller, Martin Hengel and P.M. Casey." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13912.

Full text
Abstract:
What is the correct way to interpret the relationship between the message of Jesus and the kerygma, a hermeneutic of discontinuity and evolution or a hermeneutic of continuity and development? The Eschatological Jesus will argue for continuity and development. In their portraits of a non-eschatological and non-messianic Jesus J.D. Crossan and Marcus Borg raise questions about the relationship between Jesus and the kerygma but do not answer them. Reginald H. Fuller and Martin Hengel demonstrate that high Christology can be traced directly to the eschatological ministry of Jesus, especially his authority. Fuller describes Jesus' authority in terms of an inaugurated eschatology and a distinctive sonship which he extends to others. Martin Hengel describes Jesus' eschatological authority as one who acted in God's place when he called his disciples the way God called his prophets and imposed on them a divine discipline and in Lk. 13:34 which has parallels in Sir. 1:15 and Deut. 32:11. This is a messianic authority since it was the Messiah who stood in God's place at the end of time. This Jesus who is in control of the end gave rise to a belief in his pre-existence and the claims of the Fourth Gospel. P.M. Casey, on the other hand, rejects such authority as being apparent in Jesus' ministry. Unlike Fuller and Hengel who see the Fourth Gospel as the logical outgrowth of Jesus' use of 'Abbā, Casey sees the Fourth Gospel as a betrayal of Jesus and the synoptic tradition. However, Casey overlooks the synoptic gospels' portrait of Jesus' acting in God's place and Matthew's use of προσκγνεῖν and προσέρχεσθαι. The Eschatological Jesus concludes with the belief that Jesus' ministry was messianic and eschatological and that the authority he exhibits provides the basis for not only his being Christ, but divine Lord and Son of God.

Full text
Abstract:
Television viewing is one of the most easily modifiable causes of obesity among children. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body composition and TV viewing among adolescents attending high schools in the Tlokwe municipality area of the North West province of South Africa. A cross-sectional study design which is part of the Physical Activity and Health Longitudinal Study (PAHLS) was followed on 154 learners (58 boys and 96 girls) who were aged 14 years in the Tlokwe municipality area. All the learners underwent anthropometric measurements of height, weight, and two skinfolds (triceps and subscapular skinfolds). Percentage body fat (%BF) was calculated from the two skinfolds according to Slaughter‟s et al. (1988) equation. Children were classified into three groups (viz. normal, overweight and obese) according to BMI cut-off point suggested by Cole et al. (2000). Pearson correlation coefficients were used to determine the relationship between television viewing and body composition. The results show respectively high prevalence of overweight and obesity in girls (10.4%; 6.3%) as compared to the prevalence of 5% overweight in boys. With regard to TV viewing, the results show that 54% of the total group watch TV more than two hours a day, while only 11% watched TV less than one hour a day. The results show that the group that watches TV for more than 3 hours had high BMI (21.27kg/m²) and body mass (51.54kg). The group that watches TV for 1-2 hours had low BMI (18.36kg/m²) and body mass (44.79kg). There was a statisitcal significant relationship between BMI and body mass (p=0.001). A significant positive relationship between body mass and TV viewing (r=0.56; p=0.05) in overweight group was found, whilst in the obese group strong significant positive relationship was observed between percentage body fat and TV viewieng (r=0.94; p=0.01). It can be concluded that girls were more overweight and obese respectively as compared to the boys. Furthermore, both boys and girls had high percentages of TV viewing for more than two hours a day. In addition, the results indicated that adolescents who watched TV more than 3 hours are heavier and fatter. Therefore, it is recommended that parents and educational heads should encourage periods of daily physical activity. In addition, it is also important that parents play a more positive role in limiting the amount of hours their children spent watching television.

Abstract:
The Batho-Pele programme is a prescribed national government initiative which must be implemented by all government departments. The objective of this prescribed programme is across the board improved service delivery. It is the objective of this research to describe and analyse the progress made by the North West Department of Social Services, Arts, Culture and Sport in the implementation of the Batho-Pele programme since 1998. The basis assumption is that the Department has thus far been unsuccessful in terms of effectively establishing this programme within its functional activities. This severely hampered the Department's ability to render effective services to the public and identified beneficiaries. The inefficiencies in the departmental implementation process can be narrowed down to the following aspects: A lack of integrated planning The absence of effective communication links The failure to improve the quality of live of beneficiaries A lack of standard departmental implementation procedures Inefficient evaluation and monitoring mechanisms Research will be structured by measuring the departmental implementation procedure against the prescribed national government implementation steps to realise the objectives of the Batho-Pele programme. In this regard the departmental Service Delivery Improvement Plan, as introduced in 1998, will be analysed. Such an approach will firstly enable the researcher to establish what the shortcomings within the implementation procedure are. However this approach will secondly also highlight the positive aspects of the programme. In other words a balanced perspective of the implementation procedure will be provided. Through identifying the shortcomings and linking it to the positive outcomes of the programme it would be possible to come to specific conclusions regarding the shortcomings of the programme. On the basis of these conclusions it would be possible to make specific recommendations on how to refine and improve the service delivery process to the benefit of the public.

This work analysis model transformation problems in Model Driven Architecture (MDA). MDA is an architecture created by Object Management Group (OMG). MDA separates business and application logic from underlying platform technology. Platform-independent models of an application or system can be realized through the MDA on any platform. The most important MDA problem is a transformation between plarform-independent models (PIM) and platform specific models (PSM). Currently, there is no standard language for these transformations. Purpose of this work is to analize possible transformations. Two technologies will be researched: XSLT and QVT XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) is a language for transforming XML documents into other XML documents. QVT (Queries/Views/Transformations) is a language for transforming models in MDA architecture. Aggregation systems will be used as models for transformations. Platform-independent model of aggregation system will be created and transformed to Java platform models using XSLT and QVT transformations.

We were interested to learn about much software for this but we studied about Lectra Fashion PLM, PISA PDM, and ERP Garp system (CRM, SRM, MRM) as we could manage opportunity to know about them only. For Lectra, we focused on general idea about this software, its different divisions, its working procedure, its advantage to use, its possibility to use for every company. On the other hand, we concentrated on almost similar way of Lectra for PDM, PLM, ERP (CRM, SRM, and MRM).We got different divisions of Lectra, namely- Kaledo, Modaris, Diamino, Optiplan are using for various purposes, like - design, pattern making, marker making, spreading and cutting. On the opposite side of the coin, if companies implement PDM, PLM and ERP system, they can assist to manage the whole business chain very easily for instance- product development, order, purchase, manufacturing, stock/distribution, economy, logistics etcetera. We also knew that it is expensive to buy those software’s and require special skill to operate so it is not prolific to all company.

Abstract:

Saab is in need of an improved method for construction of virtual buildings that the planner can utilize. By creating a process structure in the existing PLM system, that can communicate and consume data from the product structure that already exists, a lot of work could be saved. Presently, the planner uses a visualization program that is connected only to the product structure. The current method with this visualization software is that the planner builds a process structure for each and every new project gate. This structure cannot easily be updated and therefore a new structure must be created before the new project gate. Thus, the virtual builds become resource inefficient.

By creating a process structure that easily can be updated, the structure could be reused in new gates and projects. This is consistent with the basic ideas behind using a PLM system. There are several obstacles to master before this will be possible.

The conclusions of this study are that in the process structure, the articles should be placed under the stations and operations where they are mounted in the actual factory. There is no universal solution as to how the structure should be, but it should reflect the plant processes. In order for the planner to easily take advantage of this structure, it should also be possible to look up articles using a name filter.

Planners are currently responsible for particular product areas, such as safety related articles. All parts of this product field are installed in separate sections in the plant. In order to efficiently find all the articles in the process structure, the operations should be named after the articles that are assembled under the specific operation.

A temporary working method has been proposed and the instructions can be found in Appendix B.

Abstract:
Abstract Data is becoming more critical success factor as business processes rely increasingly on information systems. Product data is required to produce, sell, deliver, and invoice a product in information systems. Traditionally, product data and product data management (PDM) studies have focused on product development and related activities, with less attention being paid to PDM in other lifecycle phases. The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to clarify challenges and prerequisites for company-wide PDM. The study covers the entire product lifecycle and provides potential solutions for developing company-wide PDM and enhancing PDM understanding as a company-wide action. The study was realised by collecting and analysing data from those ICT companies that are seeking for better ways to manage a wide product-range, technologically complex products and comprehensive solutions by enhancing their data management practices. The empirical practitioner’s experiences and perceptions are seen to have increased the knowledge in company-wide PDM. This study adopted a case study approach and utilises interviews as the main data collection method. This study indicates that company managers have already realised that successful business operations require a higher-level understanding of products and related product data. In practice, however, several challenges hinder the ability to achieve the goal of higher-level business-driven PDM. These challenges include product harmonisation, PDM process development requirements and information systems development requirements. The results of this research indicate that product harmonisation is required to better support efficient product data management. Understanding the true nature of product data, that is combination of product master data and other general product data, and the content of product data from different stakeholder perspectives are prerequisites for functional company-wide PDM. Higher-level product decisions have a significant impact on product data management. Extensive product ranges require general guidelines in order to be manageable, especially as even single products are complex. The results of this study indicate that companies should follow a top-down approach when developing their PDM practices. The results also indicate that companies require a generic product structure in order to support unified product management. The main implication of this dissertation is the support it provides for managers in terms of developing true company-wide product data management practices
Tiivistelmä Tiedosta on tullut tärkeä liiketoiminnan menestystekijä liiketoimintaprosessien hyödyntäessä yhä vahvemmin tietojärjestelmiä.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to report preliminary evidence to support a new condition-specific measure of transition readiness that is theoretically grounded in the Stages of Changes framework. The Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire-Spina Bifida (TRAQ-SB) supplement is a newly developed tool used to measure independence and skill acquisition related to spina bifida. Similar to the Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ), the TRAQ-SB uses a 5-point Likert response set. METHODS: Working with a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in the care of children with spina bifida, the authors developed twelve items pertaining to main aspects of SB self-management. The items were reviewed and revised through several iterations by the team and patients. The items were then fielded at a spina bifida Specialty Clinic, where 93 consecutive patients 12–25 years of age were approached to participate and 90 were administered the 20-item TRAQ and a 12-item TRAQ-SB questionnaire. A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted on the twelve items with oblique rotation (promax). Criterion validity was also assessed by examining the correlation of the TRAQ-SB supplement with the TRAQ and with age. RESULTS: Results of the factor analysis revealed that eleven of the twelve items loaded onto one factor with factor loadings ranging from 0.46 to 0.84. The scale yielded excellent internal reliability with a Cronbach alpha of 0.90. Correlations of the TRAQ-SB supplement scale score with the TRAQ overall scale score demonstrated good criterion validity (r= 0.74, p< 0.01). In addition, it was highly correlated with the TRAQ subscales, varying from 0.68 to 0.74 (all p< 0.01). Lastly, the TRAQ-SB was significantly correlated with age (r= 0.25, p< 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Results of our analyses indicated that the TRAQ-SB demonstrated good internal reliability and criterion validity as evidenced by strong correlation with age and the validated TRAQ measure. The TRAQ-SB tool can be useful to incorporate transition readiness assessment and self-management training into routine care for adolescents with spina bifida.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: In order to transition to adulthood and independence, youth with spina bifida must assume significant self-management responsibilities including monitoring for shunt malfunction, maintaining intact skin in areas that are insensate, and maintaining proper bowel and bladder function. Validated measures of specific spina bifida self-management skills are lacking and this hampers the ability of clinical personnel to support successful transition for youth with spina bifida. METHODS: We developed a self-report measure specific to SB self-management skills consistent with the framework of the Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ). To test the predictive validity of the tool we surveyed 90 youth and young adults ages 12-25 with spina bifida attending a multidisciplinary clinic participating in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry (NSBPR). RESULTS: Adjusted for age, gender, race, insurance status and lesion level, higher scores on the TRAQ-SB (increased self-management) were negatively associated with urinary incontinence in the past month. Only lesion level, and not TRAQ-SB scores, was a significant predictor of stool incontinence and skin breakdown. CONCLUSIONS: Higher TRAQ-SB scores are negatively associated with bladder incontinence in youth with spina bifida. While stool continence and skin breakdown were not associated with TRAQ-SB scores, this relation is complex and may be obfuscated by either reporting bias or outcome measurement bias. To further refine the questionnaire and understand this relationship we need to field it prospectively in the SB network with larger samples. The TRAQ-SB questionnaire, however, does have value in the clinical setting to help promote the acquisition of specific self-management skills among youth with spina bifida.

The Rocco code for the first time gave protection to the "good of justice" by dedicating to it a special title entitled "crimes against the Administration of justice". In particular, within this group of crimes, the cases that incriminate false statements not only to the judicial authority, but also to subjects who, although not part of it, operate in close collaboration with the organs of the jurisdiction or, more generally, of the judicial power, assume a certain importance. The purpose of this work is to analyze the lights and the shadows of this discipline by looking at the legislative interventions of the last thirty years, driven by our Constitutional Charter which has given greater value to the "good justice" as well as the pronouncements of the supreme courts.

During high-power microwave (HPM) testing, where the item under test is subjected to power levels up to several thousand W/cm , the RF energy present will make typical 2 telemetry RF links useless. Therefore, other means must be used to retrieve the data during the tests. One method to accomplish data retrieval is to replace the RF data link with a fiber-optic link. This is done by replacing the transmitter with a fiber-optic transmitter on the sending end and the RF receiver with a fiber-optic receiver on the receiving end. Although this sounds simple, it is not always so. Solutions for PCM and FM-FM systems are relatively straightforward, whereas PAM systems present a unique set of problems. This paper addresses possible solutions for PCM and FM-FM and three possible solutions for PAM, one being by using a PAM-to-PCM converter.

Abstract:
Health condition monitoring, commonly referred as Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) for fleets or vehicles, studies the current and future health state of a system. Health monitoring techniques based on data driven approaches have proven successful in several areas and are easily scalable; however they do not rely on the understating of the physics of failure; whereas Physics-based Model (PbM) approaches require expert knowledge of the failure modes and are based on the understanding of the component behaviour and degradation mechanisms. The development of IVHM is particularly challenging for legacy aircraft due to the restrictive regulations of the aerospace industry. This thesis proposes a novel PbM technique to detect metal-metal contact in hydrodynamic bearings. The planetary transmission of an aircraft’s Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) is used as a case study. Research on the detection of metal-metal contact in hydrodynamic bearings has focused on data driven approaches using vibration or acoustic emissions rather than on PbMs. The proposed technique estimates metal-metal contact by modelling the physical phenomena involved in the failure mechanism and only the speed, load and temperature are required as inputs, all of them available in the IDG and not requiring any additional sensors. The study of metal-metal in hydrodynamic bearings in the field of tribology has focused on mixed lubrication models of the whole bearing, or computational models accounting for local effect under the hydrodynamic lubrication region. In addition to the IVHM technique, this thesis contributes to the field of tribology by proposing a computational mixed lubrication model capable of studying metal-metal contact locally along the lubricated surface of the bearing. Experimental results of a plain journal bearing have been used to validate the PbM and a replica of the transmission of the IDG has been tested to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed technique at detecting metal-metal contact.

Abstract:
This research work focuses on the design and realization of RF switches based on the integration of new materials such as vanadium dioxide (VO2), Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and GeTe chalcogenides alloys. The operating principle of these devices is based on the resistivity change presented by these materials. VO2 exhibits a Metal-Insulator transition (MIT) around 68°C for which the material changes from an insulating state (high resistivity) to a metallic one (low resistivity). The MIT transition can be triggered in different ways (thermally, electrically and optically) with low switching time. GST and GeTe alloys have the particularity to be reversibly switched between a high resistive-amorphous state to low resistive-crystalline state, under a specific heat treatment. Thanks to the non-volatile resistivity change presented by these materials, GST/GeTe-based switches are able to operate in bistable mode. The fabricated devices exhibit good electrical performances (insertion loss and isolation) over a broadband. The aim of our work is to propose an alternative solution to conventional technologies (semiconductors and RF-MEMS), to design RF switches that can be used afterward in the design of reconfigurable devices (filters, antennas)

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 28-31, 1996 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
Today’s telemetry environment is becoming increasingly digital. Highly reliable and relatively inexpensive digital recorders readily available, and most telemetry facilities are migrating away from the older analog recorders which are difficult to calibrate and expensive to maintain. Unfortunately, most site managers find they still have one or more “legacy” signals (such as FM-FM, PAM, and pre-detect PCM) that still require analog recording. To exclusively use digital recorders the TM site must integrate some device to convert the analog signals to digital format before recording. Until recently, the TM site managers had very few options short of building custom equipment to convert and capture the legacy signals. One solution available from Racal (for their Storeplex digital recorder) is to purchase their Analog Record/Play Signal Module. Unfortunately, their module uses a 16-bit Sigma-Delta converter and has a maximum bandwidth of 45.5 KHz, which is woefully inadequate for many analog signals. Other manufacturers offer similar solutions with similar bandwidth restrictions. Another solution is to purchase a multiplexor “front-end” which is capable of mixing multiple signal types (both digital and analog) on to the recorder’s serial-digital data stream. This option can provide higher analog bandwidths, but represents a significant investment (greater than $100K and often more than the recorder itself). This paper discusses the conceptualization, design, and performance of a unit to fill the gap between the low-bandwidth analog channel module and the high-end signal multiplexors. We will discuss how high-speed field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) can be configured to provide a low-cost interface between the digital recorder and the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to capture and playback the analog signals. Our design focuses on achieving the maximum possible bandwidth for each analog signal while ensuring that IRIG-A or IRIG-B timecode are recorded simultaneously (so the analog signals can be later synchronized with their digital counterparts). We have found that such a solution permits multiple analog signals from 400 KHz up to 3 MHz to be easily and inexpensively recorded on the current generation of digital recorders. Our conclusions show that such a device can permit most telemetry sites to transition completely to more reliable, cheaper, and easier-to-maintain digital recorders.

Efficient product data management throughout the product lifecycle has become increasingly crucial, of which product structure management is regarded as the most important constituent.  The study took ABB Mine Hoist system as a case to investigate how to construct a generic product structure model fit for engineer-to-order system offerings with the consideration of their sales-delivery product lifecycle. The aim of the model is to facilitate the product-related information sharing and reuse across a company, and the integration of different business operations throughout the entire product lifecycle as well. Based on the current situation analysis of product data management on ABB Mine Hoist, three major issues were identified which need to be addressed in the formulation of a generic structure model: namely the integration of requirements of multiple disciplines; the consistency of product information throughout the product lifecycle; and the constant update of product repository. Through illustrating the formulation of ABB Mine Hoist generic structure model, the method of how to construct a generic product structure model for engineer-to-order system product was presented. The model was achieved by applying the framework of the step-based product model and was regarded as a result of integrating domain-specific requirements. The adaptive generic product structure model was then employed to display the role of this generic model in the different phases of a sales-delivery lifecycle. The model could serve as a “master concept” to transfer common product information in the product lifecycle. It’s expected to benefit the business of engineer-to-order system product through improving the integration of different disciplines, enhancing information exchange and reuse. It could also provide an abstract and conceptual basis for potential product repository to reinforce data consistency and completeness.

Abstract:
This thesis work describes the implementation perspective of an integrated high efficiency DC-DC converter implemented in 65 nm CMOS. The implemented system employs the Buck converter topology to down-convert the input battery voltages. This converter offers its use as a power management unit in portable battery operated devices. This thesis work includes the description of a basic Buck converter along with the various key equations involved which describe the Buck operation as well as are used to deduce the requirements for the various internal building blocks of the system. A detailed description of the operation as well as the design of each of the building blocks is included. The implemented system can convert the input battery voltage in the range of 2.3 V to 3.6 V into an output supply voltage of 1.6 V. The system uses dual-mode feedback control to maintain the output voltage at 1.6 V. For the low load currents the PFM feedback control is used and for the higher load currents the PWM feedback control is used. This converter can supply load currents from 0 to 300 mA with efficiency above 85%. The static line regulation of the system is < 0.1% and the load regulation of the system is < 0.3%. A digital soft-start circuit is implemented in this system. The system also includes the capability to trim the output voltage in ~14 mV steps depending on the 4-bit input digital code.

One of the initial control room capabilities to be demonstrated by iNET program is the ability to provide data displays in the control room that do not contain data dropouts. This concept is called PCM Backfill where PCM data is both transmitted via traditional SST and recorded onboard via an iNET compatible recorder. When data dropouts occur, data requests are made over the telemetry network to the recorder for the missing portions of the PCM data stream. The retrieved data is sent over the telemetry network to the backfill application and ultimately delivered to a pristine data display. The integration of traditional SST and the PCM Backfill capability provides both real-time safety of flight data side-by-side with pristine data suitable for advanced analysis.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada
In this paper, a new concept in PCM telemetry encoding equipment is described. Existing "programmable" PCM encoders allow only simple changes in the functionality of the hardware, such as input gain, offset, and word formatting. More importantly, these encoders do not provide capability for "in-flight" processing of signals and in general have not taken advantage of existing hardware and software digital signal processing technology. In-flight processing of signals can provide a significant reduction in the required transmission bandwidth, allowing additional data that may not have otherwise been transmitted to be sent on the telemetry channel. A modular digital signal processor (DSP) based PCM encoder architecture is described that has a set of on-board processing algorithms configurable via a simple-to-use graphical user interface. Algorithms included are compression (lossy and lossless), Fourier transforms of various resolutions (typically followed by peak detection to provide a data rate reduction), extreme values (max, min, rms), time filtering, regression, trajectory prediction, and serial data stream processing. Custom algorithms can be developed and included as part of the suite of processing algorithms. The preprocessing algorithms exist as firmware on the DSPs and can accommodate as many different signals as the processing bandwidth of the DSP can handle. Typically one DSP can handle many input signals and different algorithms. The encoder is programmable via a standard RS-232 serial interface allowing the signal input configuration, telemetry frame layout, and on-board processing algorithms to be changed quickly.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This master thesis aims to examine how the transfer of product related information is carried out in the manufacturing industry. The study was supposed to give suggestions for improving the CAD courses provided at Linköping University. This thesis is the concluding step for the authors’ master’s degree in mechanical engineering. In the beginning of the project a study of relevant literature was made. The literature was aimed to gain more knowledge of the subject at hand and finding relevant methods for collecting and analyzing data. To examine how the industry deals with product related data a multiple case study was conducted, investigating seven different companies that are working with both product development and production. As data collection method, semi-structured interviews of employees on the different companies were conducted. An adaptation of the “affinity diagram technique” was used when analyzing the collected data. The method divided the answers to questions provided by the different companies into different categories, in the form of statements. These where compared between the companies by the use of tables, showing the results in a clear manner. To give better insight in each company´s methods, a descriptive summary was written for each of the studied companies. To be able to give propositions of improvement for the courses at the University, some of the courses given where analyzed by reviewing the course description and goals, and through informal interviews of the course administrator. This led to better insight in what is included in the courses and what they are supposed to teach the students. The knowledge of what is included in the courses at this time and the results of the study of the companies, were the foundation when determining what could be changed in the courses. The case study showed that it varies greatly how much the companies are adapting new approaches for generating and spreading product related data. This made it difficult to find tangible evidence supporting changes to the courses, however, a few conclusions could be drawn from the results. It was found that 2D-drawings are still used to a great extent for carrying product related information. Only one of the studied companies have transitioned to using the 3D-model as an information carrier. Although it was mentioned on some of the other companies that such an approach seemed interesting. The study also showed that less handling of physical papers seems to be something most companies are interested in, and are also trying to achieve. It was also noted that all the companies studied had implemented some form of digital platform for handling product related documents.A few things that were deemed worth implementing in the mandatory courses were the introduction to PDM/PLM, introduction of 3D-annotations for dimensions and tolerances and increased use of the 3D-model for manufacturing operations.

Abstract:
This thesis work is based on the previous researches in design automation at Sandvik Coromant. The concept of product family description (PFD) has been introduced to the company to improve documentation of knowledge in engineering design process. Current documentation at the company for engineering design covers mostly the design definition part of the knowledge. PFD is constituted by design definition and completed by design rationale. This kind of documentation improves reusing, revising and expanding the knowledge at the company. On the other side, PFD is an input for design programming and a good engineering design description for a product provides more efficiency in design programming. The project is started by a survey for several principles and applications for knowledge modelling. Product variant master (PVM) and Semantic MediaWiki are selected by the results of the survey. To show the concept of PVM, modelling of a test product is done in product model manager (PMM) software. The main part of the project is setting up product family description (PFD) by capturing design rationale for the test product, implementing in Semantic MediaWiki. Since the design rationale is not documented, it was recorded during several meetings with the designer of the test product. The description is completed by including the argumentations about the rules, figures, dimensions and etc. Also in the project has been tried to improve and revise the description to make it more simple and efficient. Another objective of the project is to show Semantic MediaWiki as a candidate application for modelling knowledge at the company. In this step the applicability and functionality of both PFD and Semantic MediaWiki is seen. In the next stage the project findings and company documentation are evaluated. In this step has been tried to show the pros and cons of the project. The emphasis of the evaluation is on PFD and the alternative application. In the end a conclusion of the whole methods and findings of the project comes with discussion with people who were involved in this work.

Abstract:
The thesis has evaluated the suitability of Digital Deadbeat Control of the Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation-Voltage Source Converter (SPWM-VSC) for electric power utility applications.
The Digital Deadbeat Controlled SPWM-VSC operates as a current controller where short circuit faults are not destructive. In addition, it eliminates the L-R mode at the ac terminals of the SPWM-VSC. The thesis considers methods to immunize the control from system and parameter uncertainties. A novel closed-loop Digital Deadbeat Control has been proposed. A Phase Lock Loop (PLL) suitable for this application is developed.
Together with the PLL, the Digital Deadbeat Controlled SPWM-VSC has been shown to be capable of (1) independent control of current Id and Iq, (2) near sinusoidal current waveforms, (3) broad operation frequency range.
Digital simulation is used in the thesis to prove the performance of the Digital Deadbeat Controlled SPWM-VSC.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
How difficult is it to develop a pulse code modulation (PCM) stream data format? Specifically, given a size, in bits, and a set of parameter sample rates, how hard is it to find a mapping of the sample rates that fits into the frame size -- if one even exists? Using telemetry trees this paper will show that the number of possible mappings for a given set of parameters and sample rates grows exponentially in terms of the number of parameters. The problem can thus be stated in terms of finding a specific instance, or showing that no such instance exists, among an exponentially large number of potential mappings. Although not proof, this provides strong evidence that the PCM format design problem is NP-complete (meaning it is a member of nondeterministic polynomial space but not a member of deterministic polynomial space). That is, that the problem can not be solved in polynomial time and would take a computer years or centuries to solve relatively small instances of the problem. However, if the problem requirements are relaxed slightly, telemetry trees can be used to reduce the PCM formatting problem to linear time in terms of the number of parameters. This paper describes a technique that can provide an optimal and fully packed PCM format.
