Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze product diversification, business structure and insurer performance with a comprehensive look at the property-liability (P/L) insurance operations. Design/methodology/approach Using a panel data, this study employs an ordinary least squares regression model, fixed effects model and random effects model to examine the impact of product diversification and business structure on the performance of P/L insurers. The study assesses insurer performance using both risk-adjusted return on assets and risk-adjusted return on equity. Findings The study finds that product diversification is significantly negatively related to the performance of P/L insurers. The results are consistent with the diversification discount theory. The empirical results reveal that business lines have significant impacts on firm performance, particularly on the lines of fire and marine insurances. Furthermore, the interaction between product diversification and firm size implies that product diversification significantly increases the performance of large-sized insurance firms. Originality/value The study provides some valuable insights into the effects of diversification and business structure on the performance of P/L insurers in a developing country. The study’s findings suggest that management of P/L insurers should clarify their objectives and carefully assess the company’s resources when dealing with product diversification and business structure. The results have practical implications for the financial services industry in Taiwan.

Abstract:
Measurement of the productivity of firms is an important research issue in productivity literature. Over the years, various methods have been developed to measure firm productivity across the globe. But there is no unanimity on the use of methods, and research on the identification of factors which determine productivity has been neglected. In view of these gaps, this study aims to measure total factor productivity (TFP) and tries to identify firm-specific factors which determine productivity of Indian manufacturing companies. The study is based on data of 616 firms from 1998–99 to 2012–13. To measure TFP, the Levinsohn–Petrin (L-P) method has been employed, and the fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) method has been used to identify factors that affect TFP. The results reveal that embodied and disembodied technology plays a crucial role in the determination of productivity overall in manufacturing and other sub-industries. Similarly, the size of firms and intensity of raw material imports are also important for the determination of productivity across the sub-industries. JEL Classification: C14, C33, D24, L60

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Leukocyte recruitment in the liver includes a two-step procedure in which selectin-dependent leukocyte rolling is a prerequisite for subsequent CD18-dependent leukocyte firm adhesion in postsinusoidal venules. However, the roles of the individual selectins in leukocyte rolling and adhesion, hepatocellular injury, and apoptosis remain elusive. Therefore, we examined the pathophysiological role of P-, E-, and L-selectin in male C57BL/6 mice challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and d-galactosamine (Gal) by use of intravital microscopy of the liver microcirculation. In control animals, administration of LPS-Gal provoked reproducible hepatic damage, including marked increases of leukocyte recruitment, liver enzymes, and hepatocyte apoptosis and reduced sinusoidal perfusion. Interestingly, pretreatment with an anti-P-selectin antibody (RB40.34) markedly reduced leukocyte rolling and firm adhesion by 65 and 71%, respectively. Moreover, interference with P-selectin function significantly improved sinusoidal perfusion and reduced the increase in liver enzymes by 49 to 84% in endotoxemic mice. Moreover, the activity of caspase-3 and the number of apoptotic hepatocytes were significantly reduced by 55 and 54%, respectively, in RB40.34-treated animals. In contrast, administration of an anti-E-selectin antibody (10E9.6) and an anti-L-selectin antibody (Mel-14) did not protect against endotoxin-induced leukocyte responses or hepatic injury. In conclusion, our novel findings document a principal role of P-selectin in mediating leukocyte rolling, a precondition to the subsequent firm adhesion of leukocytes in liver injury. Furthermore, our novel data demonstrate that inhibition of P-selectin function reduces hepatocellular injury and apoptosis, suggesting a causal relationship between leukocyte recruitment on one hand and hepatocellular injury and apoptosis on the other hand. Based on these findings, it is suggested that P-selectin may be an important therapeutic target in endotoxin-induced liver injury.

Abstract:
AbstractIn previous studies, the influence of plantar sensation has been examined using various textured surfaces with different stiffness materials to assess static balance. This study investigated the effects of a Firm Textured Surface (FTS) along with age and sex-related influences on postural control under different visual conditions. Forty subjects (20 elderly, 10 males, mean age 68.30, 10 females, mean age 68.00, and 20 young people, 10 males, mean age 25.45, 10 females, mean age 27.30) participated in this study maintained a quiet standing on FTS, foam and firm surfaces with eyes open and closed. The center of pressure displacement (CoPDISP), CoP velocity (CoPVEL), and sway velocity of the CoP in anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) direction (VA/P and VM/L) were measured. FTS was associated with lower postural sway measures in both the groups with eyes open and closed. However, the foam surface showed the worst results in all postural parameters under all experimental conditions. Separate four-way ANOVAs were applied to each dependent variable. The main effects of surface (p < 0.0001), vision (p < 0.0001) and age (p < 0.0001 for CoPDISP, CoPVEL and VA/P; p = 0.0003 for VM/L) were significant in each of the four fitted models. Sex was never significant, either as a main effect or an interaction with other experimental factors. Eyes open were able to reduce the negative effects of the foam surfaces but without vision the proprioceptive sensory system cues of the body state become more important for maintaining balance. A good stimulation with rigid texture should be considered as relief to reduce the physiological-related decline of afferent information with age.

Abstract:
To study selectin-independent leukocyte recruitment and the role of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), we generated mice lacking all three selectins and ICAM-1 (E/P/L/I−/−) by bone marrow transplantation. These mice were viable and appeared healthy under vivarium conditions, although they showed a 97% reduction in leukocyte rolling, a 63% reduction in leukocyte firm adhesion, and a 99% reduction of neutrophil recruitment in a thioglycollate-induced model of peritonitis at 4 and 24 h. Mononuclear cell recruitment was almost unaffected. All residual leukocyte rolling and most leukocyte adhesion in these mice depended on α4-integrins, but a small number of leukocytes (6% of wild-type control) still became adherent in the absence of all known rolling mechanisms (E-, P-, L-selectin and α4-integrins). A striking similarity of leukocyte adhesion efficiency in E/P/L−/− and E/P/I−/− mice suggests a pathway in which leukocyte rolling through L-selectin requires ICAM-1 for adhesion and recruitment. Comparison of our data with mice lacking individual or other combinations of adhesion molecules reveal that elimination of more adhesion molecules further reduces leukocyte recruitment but the effect is less than additive.

Abstract:
Terada, Lance S., John E. Repine, Dale Piermattei, and Brooks M. Hybertson. Endogenous nitric oxide decreases xanthine oxidase-mediated neutrophil adherence: role of P-selectin. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(3): 913–917, 1997.—The oxygen radical-producing enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO) can promote neutrophil adherence to endothelium. Recognizing that a balance often exists in inflammatory processes, we sought to determine whether XO initiates antiadherent pathways. We found that bovine pulmonary arterial endothelial cells (EC) exposed to XO released increased amounts of nitrite into the media, reflecting an increased production of nitric oxide (NO). When EC were subjected to shear stress, treatment with XO and/or the NO synthase inhibitor Nω-nitro-l-arginine (l-NNA) increased neutrophil rolling behavior and firm neutrophil adherence to EC in an additive fashion. Both rolling and adherent interactions were abolished by monoclonal antibodies directed against P-selectin. In addition, treatment of EC with XO and/orl-NNA increased both surface expression of P-selectin and release of von Willebrand factor into media. Finally, treatment of EC with the NO donor sodium nitroprusside decreased XO-mediated neutrophil rolling and adherence. We conclude that XO stimulates EC to produce NO and that NO decreases the P-selectin-dependent neutrophil adhesion initiated by XO. Such increases in endogenous NO may constitute an important negative-feedback response to the acute proadhesive effects of XO.

Abstract:
Leukocyte rolling and adhesion are generally observed in venules but rarely observed in arterioles. With the use of intravital microscopy, we found that a 4-h treatment with interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) dose dependently induced leukocyte rolling and adhesion in arterioles of the mouse cremaster muscle. The rolling response lasted more than 24 h and was completely inhibited by treatment with the sulfated polysaccharide fucoidin. Moreover, we found that costimulation with IL-1beta and TNF-alpha for 4 h synergistically increased arteriolar leukocyte rolling, i.e., threshold doses of IL-1beta and TNF-alpha together caused a more than 10-fold increase of rolling in arterioles compared with the sum of the individual responses. This rolling interaction was abolished by treatment with a monoclonal antibody directed against P-selectin (RB40.34), but it apparently was unaffected by a monoclonal antibody against L-selectin (MEL-14). Taken together, our functional data show that IL-1beta and TNF-alpha separately induce and synergistically increase P-selectin-dependent leukocyte rolling and firm adhesion in mouse cremaster arterioles.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: The cause and continuation of vaso-occlusion in sickle cell disease (SCD) are fueled by the sickle-Red Blood Cells interactions with multiple other cell populations, promoting inflammation, obstructing the vasculature, and injuring the endothelium, leading to broad manifestations that affect most vital organs. Recent studies have identified multiple cellular components and molecular factors that contribute to the pathophysiology of SCD as reviewed by Zhang et al 2016 in Blood. It is likely that a multi-targeted approach for addressing SCD vaso-occlusion will be required to achieve the best clinical outcome. Sevuparin (DF02), a novel drug in Phase 2 for acute treatment of vaso-occlusive crisis in SCD (NCT02515838), is a polysaccharide blocking abnormal adhesion and thereby normalizing obstructed blood flow. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown potent anti-adhesive effects with a multimodal mechanism of action. In this study, we evaluate the effects of sevuparin on the adhesion of sickle whole blood from individual patients to endothelial cells (HUVECs) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) (Flow Firm Adhesion) and sickle-leukocyte rolling adhesion on L-selectin (Flow Dynamic Adhesion) using a standardized microfluidic flow-based adhesion assay. Methods: Blood was obtained from homozygous SCD patients (n = 12, age range 15-25yrs) in sodium citrate after obtaining informed consent. A comprehensive assessment of the effect of sevuparin on whole blood adhesive properties during simulated blood flow was assessed using standardized Flow Firm Adhesion and Flow Dynamic Adhesion assays (Functional Fluidics, Detroit MI). Flow Firm Adhesion: Whole blood firm adhesion was measured during physiologic flow in microfluidic channels (Fluxion-Bioflux 1000, San Francisco, CA) coated with either VCAM-1 or cultured HUVECs. HUVECs were activated by TNF-alpha (25ng/mL x 24 hrs.) and Histamine (100mM x 10min) prior to the assay. Whole blood was treated with increasing doses of sevuparin (0, 3, 7, 21, 200µg/mL) for 30 min. Dose response of whole blood adhesion index (cells/mm2) to sevuparin was measured. Flow Dynamic Adhesion: Rolling adhesion of isolated sickle-leukocytes on an L-selectin coated microfluidic channel was measured during physiologic flow. Isolated sickle-leukocytes were treated with increasing doses of sevuparin (0, 3, 7, 21, 200µg/mL) for 30 min. Dose response of rolling cell density (cells/mm2), rolling cell percentage (%), and average rolling velocity (µm/s) to sevuparin was assessed. Cell identification and tracking of rolling were digitally analyzed. Results:Statistically significant inhibition of sickle whole blood adhesion to HUVECs was observed at 3.0 µg/mL of sevuparin (p<0.001). In the same manner, statistically significant inhibition of sickle whole blood adhesion to VCAM-1 was observed at 200 µg/mL of sevuparin (p=0.033, absolute adhesion, p=0.001, % baseline adhesion). Each patient sample demonstrated a reduction in adhesion. Sevuparin also demonstrated a statistically significant dose-dependent reduction of sickle leukocyte rolling cell density (cells/mm2), rolling cell percentage (%), and an increase in average rolling velocity (µm/s) on L-selectin. Patient-to-patient variability in sevuparin response was observed. Conclusions: Sevuparin blocks both sickle whole blood and isolated sickle-leukocyte adhesive interactions under physiologic flow at clinically relevant concentrations. The blocking of adhesion to VCAM-1 indicates that sevuparin acts in the same manner as other heparinoids in vitro, and block the interaction with VLA-4. L-selectin is another possible target for sevuparin therapy now confirmed at the cellular level. Clinically, Okpala et al 2002 has shown that L-selectin expression by monocytes is increased in vaso-occlusive crises, compared to steady state and that both mononuclear cell and neutrophil L-selectin expression is also higher in patients with certain complications of SCD. Here we show that sevuparin acts in a multicellular manner, blocking both SS-RBC firm adhesion and L-selectin-mediated rolling adhesion of sickle-leukocytes, as well as functionally interacting with yet another key adhesion receptor VCAM-1. This further adds to sevuparin's multimodal action and its potential clinical benefits in treating the complex mechanisms manifested in vaso-occlusion and complications in SCD. Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the study of classes of operators. Two different families of classes of operators are mainly studied.- The first classes we study are classes of operators on Hilbert spaces that generalize the classes $C_{ho}$ of Nagy and Foias. For $(ho_n)_n$ a sequence of non-zero complex numbers, we define the class $C_{(ho_n)}(H)$ as the set of operators $T in mathcal{L}(H)$ that are said to possess a $(ho_n)$-dilation: there exists a Hilbert space K and a unitary operator $U in mathcal{L}(K)$ with $H subset K$ and $T^n=ho_n P_H U^n|_H$ for every $n geq 1$ ($P_H in mathcal{L}(K)$ being the orthogonal projection from K onto its closed subspace H). These classes can be associated with an holomorphic map $f_{(ho_n)}$ as well as a quasi-norm $w_{(ho_n)}$. These three objects are tied together and we use them to characterize, describe, and give several spectral properties of operators belonging to this class. We give multiple relationships between multiple classes of this form, generalize many results that were known for classes $C_{(ho)}$, and give several examples and cases that exhibit new behaviours. We also bring a new geometric meaning behind a relationship between quasi-norms $w_{ho}$ and extend the computations of $w_{ho}(T)$ for operators T that are zeroes of a degree two polynomial.- The second main part of our study concerns classes of L^p-projections.An L^p-projection on a Banach space X, for $1leq p leq +infty$, is an idempotent operator P satisfying $ |f|_X = |(|P(f)|_X, |(I-P)(f)|_X) |_{ell_{p}}$ for all f in X. This is anL^p version of the equality $|f|^2=|Q(f)|^2 + |(I-Q)(f)|^2$, valid for orthogonal projections on Hilbert spaces. We are interested into relationships between L^p-projections on a Banach space X and L^p-projections on a subspace F, on a quotient X/F, or on a subspace of a quotient G/F. These questions are given an answer on Banach spaces with additional properties, depending on the value of p.We also introduce a notion of maximal L^p-projections for X, that is L^p-projections defined on a subspace G of X that cannot be extended to L^p-projections on larger subspaces, and study their properties, especially on finite dimensional Banach spaces. A characterization of L^{infty}-projections on every space L^{infty}(Omega) is obtained as well using new methods, generalizing previously known results

Abstract:
In the present thesis I study the contribution to firm value of inventories management from a risk management perspective. I find a significant contribution of inventories to the value of risk management especially through the operating flexibility channel. In contrast, I do not find evidence supporting the view of inventories a reserve of liquidity. Inventories substitute, albeit not perfectly, derivatives or cash holdings. The substitution between hedging with derivatives and inventory is moderated by the correlation between cash flow and the underlying asset in the derivative contract. Hedge ratios increase with the effectiveness of derivatives. The decision to hedge with cash holdings or inventories is strongly influenced by the degree of complementarity between production factors and by cash flow volatility. In addition, I provide a risk management based explanation of the secular substitution between inventories and cash holdings documented, among others, in Bates et al. (2009), Journal of Finance. In a sample of U.S. firms between 1980 and 2006, I empirically confirm the negative relation between inventories and cash and provide evidence on the poor performance of investment cash flow sensitivities as a measure of financial constraints also in the case of inventories investment. This result can be explained by firms' scarce reliance on inventories as a reserve of liquidity. Finally, as an extension of my study, I contrast with empirical data the theoretical predictions of a model on the integrated management of inventories, trade credit and cash holdings.

A proposal that will benefit not only the place itself but also the village community and visitors. A project that revives the spirit of the place but preserves its intimate atmosphere. The design itself includes a bistro, an art gallery, accommodation with sauna and a wine gallery. Between all of this is a Provence-style garden.

Abstract:
The theme of the development of the existing sports grounds was dealt with Based on a number of analyzes, visits to the site and communication with the community management, the theme of the development of the existing sports grounds was dealt with. The whole territory is up to a football field in a very maintained conditions. There are two smaller accommodation facilities, which are seasonally used mainly by schools in nature and other students, but their condition is quite unsatisfactory. The soccer field, which is the only one maintained, belongs to the existing base of soccer players - the dressing room with the clubhouse. Their condition is also somewhat aggravated. In the current spatial plan, the whole proposed area is at the interface of two areas, the first is the area of sport and individual recreation and the second is the area to be examined. Urban design is based on the location of the existing soccer field and the preservation or improvement of existing links to the surrounding area. Most of the paved areas will be overtaken. Part of the design of the development of sports activities in the village was also to find a possible solution for parking for tourists, for which there is no free space in the village. The chosen location is advantageous in that, when a parking lot will be created, it will be created near the main entrance to the village on road II. Cl. No. 420 from Hustopeče through the village. Architectonically, but also conceptually, the construction is based on the economic possibilities of the municipality, the possibilities of variability of the solution and especially of the possibilities of staging construction. The result are two buildings. One main, replacing the background of spccer players, creates the conditions for year-round training in the new gym, for going to fitness, while part of the building is a platform for the soccer field. The second building is an accommodation that replaces the existing unsatisfactory buildings. Architecturally, they are masses that are greatly affected by the modules. The building structure and the facilities of the sports hall are structurally designed from standardized modular systems, steel containers that are interconnected to create an unusual spectacle. The area of the gym is defined by a reinforced concrete skeleton. Both buildings are covered with gold anodized sheet metal, which is profiled similarly to the peripheral walls of the containers. At the same time, the object was to create year-round sports grounds that are accessible to the general public and youth.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to define the vision (in concrete proposals) for the functioning of community, socio-social, leisure and other activities in the village. The vision as such emerged on the basis of analyzes already in the last semester, on its basis, we come to the solution of a partial project, which should show the municipality how to go and why. Representatives and residents of Strachotín have for a long time been considering certain steps, construction works of varying extent, which would strengthen the population, their possibilities in using the potential of the place (wine, tourism) and the village returned the lost face. There is only a small distance between the village and the end of the village in the direction of Pálava, but there is an important urban area - the surroundings of the church - which is historically very important and it hides its potential. In my work, I have commissioned him to uncover it and try to inspect what she can offer. Not only for tourists, but also for locals.

Abstract:
The project deals with the design of the wine gallery and community center in smaller wine-growing village Strachotín, which is situated in the beautiful landscape under the hills, called "Pálavské vrchy", and also is on the edge of the magnificent waterwork - "Novomlýnské nádrže". The construction of the wine gallery and the community center is designed in the historical structure of the village, near the gothic church. The project follows up the analytical part, which dealt with the vision for the future development of the village Strachotín. The vision, which after thorough examination of the village included seventeen interventions of small or larger urban character, which would be beneficial for the development of the village and surroundings.

Abstract:
Many factors explain the importance of the research: role of forest industry in Latvian national economy, predicted climate changes in future that foresee better conditions for forest fires, and the fact that until this moment in Latvia there is very little research about radial growth dynamic after forest fire. Object of the research is surface fire affected middle-age managed Scots pine stands in forest site type Hylocomiosa. The empirical material was collected in 500 m2 large circular sample plots in both fire affected and fire unaffected parts of forest stands. At sample plots, dendrometric parameters of trees were measured. After low to medium intensity surface fire forest stand radial growth dynamics is positive, but effect of forest fire impact is negligible – in six year period six cubic meters per hectare or in average one cubic meter per hectare per year. Forest fire significantly does not affect mortality of trees in middle-age Scots pine forest stand in forest site type Hylocomiosa, p = 0.19 > α= 0.05. Minimal financial loss as result of deadwood volume after forest fire is 2179.00 EUR ha-1.

Abstract:
The novice researcher, such as the graduate student, can be overwhelmed by the intricacies of the research methods employed in conducting a scholarly inquiry. As both a consumer and producer of research, it is essential to have a firm grasp on just what is entailed in producing legitimate, valid results and conclusions. The very large and growing number of diverse research approaches in current practice exacerbates this problem. The goal of this review is to provide the novice researcher with a starting point in becoming a more informed consumer and producer of research. Toward addressing this goal, a new system for deriving a proposed study type is developed. The PLD model includes the three common drivers for selection of study type: research-worthy problem (P), valid quality peer-reviewed literature (L), and data (D). The discussion includes a review of some common research types and concludes with definitions, discussions, and examples of various fundamentals of research methods such as: a) forming research questions and hypotheses; b) acknowledging assumptions, limitations, and delimitations; and c) establishing reliability and validity.

Abstract:
Abstract The Flow-Induced Motions (FIM) is an essential topic on multi-column platforms due to the effect on the mooring line fatigue life. Vortex-Induced Motions (VIM) or galloping behavior can be observed for an array of four columns with square sections. The presence of pontoons showed to be important for changing the flow around the array and promoting different amplitude behaviors of the motions in the transverse direction mainly. This article aims to understand the effect of the presence of four pontoons on the FIM of a semi-submersible platform (SS) with four square section columns. Model tests of a floating system supported elastically utilizing four springs were performed in a towing tank. Five different pontoon ratios were tested, namely P/L = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00; where P is the pontoon height (the dimension in the vertical direction), and L is the length of the square column face. The draft condition was kept constant as H/L = 1.5; where H is the draft of the platform. The spacing ratio of the columns was S/L = 4; where S is the distance between column centers. Two incidence angles of the current were carried out, namely 0 and 45 degrees. The amplitudes in the transverse direction (direction perpendicular to the incidence current) decreased by increasing the pontoon ratio for 0 and 45-deg incidences. The pontoons positioned aligned to the flow significantly reduced the amplitudes in the transverse direction since the pontoon presence in this position modified the incident wake in the downstream columns. The pontoon presence needs to be well investigated to choose the best condition to avoid raising the FIM or mitigating the FIM.

Abstract:
The steady-state wide band liquid crystal technique is used to study the film cooling performance downstream of a variety of geometries in a flat plate. This technique provides a detailed measurement of both cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient. This paper presents the effects of compound and fan–shaped holes, the effect of streamwise angle variation has been presented at previous meetings. The following configurations are investigated: a single hole, a row of holes with a pitch-to-diameter ratio, p/D, of 3, two inline rows with p/D of 3 and two staggered rows with p/D of 6; all with a stream–wise angle of 30°. The spacing between two rows was chosen as 12.4D. Two lateral injection are investigated: 30° and 60° compound angle. The fan shaped hole used comprised of a lateral expansion of 14° from the original simple cylindrical shape with streamwise inclination of 30°; forward expansion was not incorporated. The length-to-diameter ratio, L/D, was maintained at a value of 4 for all the compound cases, the L/D for the fan shaped-hole was 6, larger due to its physical limitation. The tests were performed with a jet-to-freestream density ratio of 1.5; achieved by using a foreign gas (CO2) injection. The range of momentum flux ratios (M) covered was 0.33 to 1.67. The row of 30° compound angle holes gave a lower value of effectiveness when compared to the non-compound case at M<0.67, but greater values and coverage at M>1.0, consistent with previous experiments. The row of 60° compound angle gave greater effectiveness, coverage and uniformity than the row of 30° compound at a given blowing ratio; the jet-to-jet interaction was greater for the 60° row due to the added lateral momentum. The row of 60° compound gave an increase of order 100% relative to the non-compounded row for M>1. Two inline rows of fan-shape holes delivered less effectiveness than the corresponding single row at the same spanwise distance for a given jet fluid mass, or blowing ratio with twice the jet fluid mass. For equal blowing ratios and equal flow rates the fan-shaped hole gave a much higher effectiveness.

Abstract:
To further understand the effect of compound angle holes and hole shaping on film cooling, detailed heat transfer measurements were obtained using a hue based thermochromic liquid crystal method. This technique is fully described based on its development for film cooling applications. The data were analyzed to determine both the full surface adiabatic effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient. The compound angles that are presented consist of holes aligned at 0° (streamwise) and 45° to the main cross flow direction. Hole shaping variations from the traditional cylindrically shaped hole include forward diffused and laterally diffused hole configurations. The length to diameter ratio (L/D) was 4.0, the pitch to diameter ratio (P/D) was 3.0, and the inclination angle (α) was 35°. A density ratio (DR) of 1.55 was obtained for all tests using carbon dioxide as the injection fluid into an air stream. For each set of conditions the blowing ratio (M) was varied to be 0.88, 1.25, and 1.88. Adiabatic effectiveness was obtained using a steady state test, while an active heating surface (constant, uniform heat flux) was used to determine the heat transfer coefficient using a transient method.
