Background: Non-nutritive sucking habit (NNSH) is the main environmental causative factor that disturbs normal orofacial development. In spite of the harmful effect of pacifier as a NNSH, mothers aware from the other types of NNSH like thumb sucking far more than pacifier use. Open bite is one of the most challenging malocclusions in orthodontics due to the high prevalence of relapse after treatment, so preventing the causative factor of its occurrence is essential at early age of child life. The sample was composed of 110 children aged 3 to 6 years with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate and 110 children without alterations. The prevalence of oral habits and the correlation between habits and presence of fistulae (for children with clefts) were analyzed by questionnaires applied to the children caretakers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in an attempt to increase breastfeeding rates amongst infants. This initiative is focussed on eliminating hospital practices that could influence breastfeeding success. One such practice is the provision of pacifiers to breastfeeding infants which is highlighted in step 9 of BFHI’s 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. Pacifiers are known to potentially cause nipple confusion and a decrease in milk supply. In this report I argue that the use of pacifiers for preterm infants in the Neonatal Intensiv
