Abstract:
This research centres on product package design related to older people's emotional needs. In particular, knowledge concerning the design of packages for transgenerational use linked to background social data has been elicited. The most distinctive accomplishment has been an exploration of the visual appeal of packaging design in relation to age, gender, education and emotional preference of older consumers. Findings are primarily related to the interaction older people in the UK with selected aspects of package design. Three areas of research have been brought together in this thesis: packaging design and multiple choice, emotional/psychological preference for packaging design characteristics and colour appeal associated ..w ith food character in packaging design. Investigations into the 'third age' and classifications beyond utilised a large sample from the 'Thousand Elders' and a range of packaging designs for selected food items. The significant findings indicate that familiarity and emotional response to packaging designs are key determinants in older consumers' intentions to purchase. Design relating to overall perception or technical cognition are shown to correlate with age related emotional feelings of arousal. Specific findings on such correlations are described in detail. A further 'emotional appeal' was found with colour; for example, green, yellow or bright tones were the most popular colour hue and value associated with varied qualities for food packaging design for specific age groups. Differences between ages, gender and education levels (hypothesised variables linked to design choices) are also analysed and correlated; for example, gender and age rather than educational level combinations appeared to significantly influence choice. Males aged between 55 and 64 relied on their experience of functional aspects for packaging design when considering a purchase. Females in the older age group of 65-74 were more emotional and considered visual appeal in a more personal way. However, few distinguishable psychological effects were noted for the over 75 year olds in their relationship with design. Personal characteristics of older people and their choice are presented in a combination of qualitative interpretation and numeric analysis. Key findings relate to the specific nature of older consumers behaviour in their engagement with packaging design.

Abstract:
The packaging market in the world just grows and grows. Today, it is almost impossible to think away the packaging in our product distribution, but it is important not only to see packaging as a burden on the environment. This is because packages can help reduce the amount of transport damaged goods and increases product durability. But of course we can develop the packages available on the market today for the better and it is in this process that a designer can play a key role.  In this thesis, I have tried to develop two primary packages on behalf of Innventia AB. These packages shall meet the requirements for product protection while saving money and the environment through increased volume efficiency and smaller amount of material. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the process of packaging development from an evolutionary and revolutionary perspective. These two perspectives are examined for the pros and cons to come up with a good and unique solution in my task and to see how much a package can be improved by the choice of design and how much a designer can save money and the environment by packaging development.  To reach this goal, I have examined the range of today's packaging market and tried to find the areas that need to be developed and even the ability to create something revolutionary, which is missing in the market today, but which the consumer or business is in need of. A study about packaging design, packaging audit, evolutionary and revolutionary packaging was done to clarify what it means and what needs and requirements to be fulfilled. These studies have provided the basis for my design process then I have worked on sketches and models.  The results of the thesis were two different packaging projects; an evolutionary packaging and a revolutionary packaging. I chose to focus on these two design proposals and to develop them in order to examine how a designer can work and affect sustainability.

Abstract:
Packaging and package design is commonly thought of as a tool to attract the consumer to material goods. Packages, however, have other attributes. In Japan, packaging design is very charming because of the delicate selection of materials, images, and interaction. Different kinds of material provide different emotions and appeal to our sense of touch, which can be interpreted in many ways. Packaging lets us directly interact with an object and this experience becomes memorable and intimate. The combination of image and interaction creates another dimension of story telling. My creative project, Conceptual Packaging, is an experiment in using materials and forms to package immaterial concepts and messages such as memories.

Abstract:
The use of robotic systems in consumer goods industry has increased over recent years. However, food industry has not taken to the robotics technology with the same desire as in other industries due to technical and commercial reasons. Difficulties in matching human speed and flexibility, variable nature of food products, high production volume rates, lack of appropriate end-effectors, high initial investment rate of the so-called systems and low margins in food products are still blocking the range of use of robotics in food industry. In this thesis study, as a contribution to the use of robotic systems in food industry, a secondary packaging robotic system is designed. The system is composed of two basic subsystems: a dual-axis controlled robotic arm and a special-purpose gripper. Mechanical and control systems design of basic subsystems are performed within the scope of the study. During the designing process, instead of using classical design methods, modern computer-aided design and engineering tools are utilized.

Abstract:
Packaging is a topic under debate and scrutiny in today’s society, due to its obvious environmental detriment – but also the business opportunities – tied to minimizing or even eliminating packaging. Therefore, two major Swedish companies have collaborated with KTH in order to investigate this field by using a pair of reading glasses as an example. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the applicability of sustainable packaging design practices and theories in a business case study, and also the value generated in the case study. The results were a review of five sustainable packaging design practices and theories in relation to the case study, and the design of a new packaging called ‘Toblerone’. The conclusion was that all five practices and theories were applicable to the business case study in theory, but in practice, two of them were not economically viable. The link between economic performance and environmental performance had a massive impact on setting the ambition level of this type of sustainability research. However, the economic value generated at the end of the case study was a whopping 720% increase in shipping efficiency, while environmental and social values needed further investigations.

Abstract:
This dissertation drives throughout packaging, private labels and copycatting literature and analyses a potential copycatting case study. For this purpose, an empirical quantitative study was carried out comparing four of the main competitors in the Energy Drink sector. The results confirmed that the case study Private Label was in fact attested as a copycat of the National Brand. Further, it demonstrated that packaging similarity has its impact in the consumers perception, as it creates between products an association that gives to the consumer the perception that both products have similar quality and offer the same benefits. This demonstrates the threat that private label copycatting may represent to national brands and the major influence of packaging on consumer behaviour and its significance to organizations.

Won, Seahwa. "Colour information in design : understanding colour meaning in packaging design." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12472/.

Full text
Abstract:
Colour is a powerful visual cue that affects consumer brand choice. Although there is an obvious and recognised value in the use of colour information in design, the literature demonstrates that colour information is an underexplored area that has not yet been addressed in detail by design research either practically or theoretically. Moreover, colour crosses various disciplines; due to its multi-disciplinary nature, it is not clear whether colour information is being effectively utilised in design. The aim of this study was to identify which types of colour information are useful in packaging, and to suggest a prototype tool (at concept level) to deliver this useful colour information to design professionals. An analysis of the relevant literature revealed 13 types of colour information which were then selected as basis for the study. Subsequently, the research design consisted of two phases. The first phase was exploratory in order to gain rich insight into the characteristics of useful colour information through interviews, an online survey, a colour meaning experiment, a colour meaning framework, and a colour meaning case study. The second phase was practice-based. Based on the informed exploration from the early studies, a web-based colour tool prototype, referred to as the CMCW (colour-meaning-centred website), was created, refined, and tested. The primary contribution of this study stems from an understanding of colour information to support design professionals; the identification of the five types (harmony, perception, meaning, psychology and printing) and the characteristics of useful colour information; and the formation of a colour-meaning framework and colour-meaning web tool. The secondary contribution of this study is the methodological approach undertaken that was used to understand the relationship between colour meaning and context by conducting a design-focused colour experiment. Research evidence highlights the importance and value of colour meaning information in design. The insight from this work will help researchers, design professionals, and colour-tool developers to make informed decisions on what they should focus on, how they should do so, and why. This will facilitate better provisions and uptake of useful colour information for design professionals in the design process and strategy fields. The framework also could support understanding of colour design practice in an analytic way, and be employed as a research tool in various design- or marketing-related research to investigate and analyse colour.

Stoyanov, Stoyan Kostadinov. "Optimisation modelling for microelectronics packaging and product design." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2004. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/6312/.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to develop a design framework for virtual prototyping of electronic packaging. This framework couples computational mechanics and fluid dynamics, based on finite volume method with integrated finite element routines, with numerical optimisation and statistical methods. This integrated approach is intended as a modelling tool for calculating optimal design solutions for electronic packaging and component assembly with a focus on die reliability and the thermal management. The motivation is to introduce numerical optimisation theory as an approach for a fast, systematic and automated design approach for wide range microelectronics applications. The proposed methodology will also benefit from multi-physics numerical analysis to predict complex behaviour of electronic packages, systems and processes subject to different operational or environmental conditions. This thesis demonstrates multi-physics modelling (i.e. integrated solutions for fluid flow, heat transfer and stress) coupled with gradient/non-gradient based numerical optimisation techniques and associated statistical methods. An explanation and comparison of the two approaches to numerical optimisation — (1) Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Design of Experiments (DoE) and (2) direct gradient based and non-gradient methods - are given. Both the advantages and limitations of these virtual design strategies, with respect to their integration with multi-physics modelling, are discussed and demonstrated. This integrated multiphysics/optimisation design approach is demonstrated on a variety of problems from the area of microelectronics design and packaging. The thesis demonstrates this for three industrial examples. These are: The software packages used to develop the design tool and to undertake the outlined studies are PHYSICA and VisualDOC. PHYSICA is a multiphysics finite volume based simulation tool with integrated modules for finite element solid mechanics analysis. The software framework is detailed in Chapter 2, Section 2.4 and further in Chapter 4. The VisualDOC tool offers a collection of numerical optimisation routines and modules for statistical analysis (Design of Experiments) and approximate Response Surface modelling. VisualDOC framework is discussed in Chapter 4, Section 4.8.

Zhu, Yan. "Rational design of plastic packaging for alcoholic beverages." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019SACLA020.

Full text
Abstract:
The view of plastic food packaging turned from useful to a major source of contaminants in food and an environmental threat. Substituting glass by recycled or biosourced plastic containers reduces environmental impacts for bottled beverages. The thesis developed a 3D computational and optimization framework to accelerate the prototyping of eco-efficient packaging for alcoholic beverages. Shelf-life, food safety, mechanical constraints, and packaging wastes are considered into a single multicriteria optimization problem. New bottles are virtually generated within an iterative three steps process involving: i) a multiresolution [E]valuation of coupled mass transfer; ii) a [D]ecision step validating technical (shape, capacity, weight) and regulatory (shelf-life, migrations) constraints; iii) a global [Solving] step seeking acceptable Pareto solutions. The capacity to predict shelf-life of liquors in real conditions was tested successfully on ca. 500 hundred bottle min iatures in PET (polyethylene terephthalate) over several months. The entire approach has been designed to manage any coupled mass transfer (permeation, sorption, migration). Mutual sorption is considered via polynary Flory-Huggins formulation. A blob formulation of the free-volume theory of Vrentas and Duda was developed to predict the diffusion properties in glassy polymers of water and organic solutes in arbitrary polymers (polyesters, polyamides, polyvinyls, polyolefins). The validation set included 433 experimental diffusivities from literature and measured in this work. The contribution of polymer relaxation in glassy PET was analyzed in binary and ternary differential sorption using a cosorption microbalance from 25 to 50°C. Part of the framework will be released as an open-source project to encourage the integration of more factors affecting the shelf-life of beverages and food products (oxidation kinetics, aroma scalping)

Collins, Gustina B. "Design, Fabrication and Testing of Conformal, Localized Wafer-level Packaging for RF MEMS Devices." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29673.

Full text
Abstract:
A low-cost, low-temperature packaging concept is proposed for localized sealing and control of the ambient of a device cavity appropriate for Radio-Frequency (RF) Micro- Electro-Mechanical (MEMS) devices, such as resonators and switches. These devices require application specific packaging to facilitate their integration, provide protection from the environment, and control interactions with other circuitry. In order to inte- grate these devices into standard integrated circuit (IC) process flows and minimize damage due to post-fabrication steps, packaging is performed at the wafer level. In this work Indium and Silver are used to seal a monolithic localized hermetic pack- age. The cavity protecting the device is formed using standard lithography-based processing techniques. Metal walls are built up from the substrate and encapsulated by a glass or silicon lid to create a monolithic micro-hermetic package surrounding a predefined RF microsystem. The bond for the seal is then formed by rapid alloying of Indium and Silver using a temperature greater than that of the melting point of Indium. This ensures that the seal formed can subsequently function at tempera- tures higher than the melting temperature of pure Indium. This method offers a low-temperature bonding technique with thermal robustness suitable for wafer-level process integration. The ultimate goal is to create a seal in a vacuum environment. In this dissertation, design trade-offs made in wafer-level packaging are explained using thermo-mechanical stress and electrical performance simulations. Prototype passive microwave circuits are packaged using the developed packaging process and the performance of the fabricated circuits before and after packaging is analyzed. The effect of the package on coplanar waveguide structures are characterized by measur- ing scattering parameters and models are developed as a design tool for wafer-level package integration. The small scale of the localized package is expected to provide greater reliability over conventional full chip packages.

Abstract:
Growing pressure on the packaging design to enhance the environmental and logistics performance of a packaging system stresses the packaging designers to search new design strategies that not only fulfill logistics requirements in the supply chain, but also reduce the CO 2emissions during the packaging life cycle. This thesis focuses on the packaging design process and suggests some improvements by considering its logistics performance and CO 2emissions. A Green packaging development model was proposed for corrugated box design to explore the inter-dependencies that exist among compressive strength, waste and CO2emissions. The verification of the proposed model unveils the significance of a holistic view of the packaging system in the packaging design process and reveals the importance of packaging design decisions on the logistics performance and CO 2 emissions. The thesis finally concluded that the packaging logistics performance should be considered in a packaging design process to explore the Green packaging design solution.

Abstract:
The e-commerce is an area that has grown considerably in recent years and continues to grow at a rapid pace. It is thereby becoming more and more important for com-panies to distinguish themselves amongst others, not least when it comes to getting customers to return for a second purchase. A good way to do this is to create a posi-tive experience for consumers. As the interaction with the customers has shifted from physical meetings to a computer screen through the spread of online retail, it is im-portant to nourish the few encounters that remain. An important point of interaction is the receiving of purchased goods. The packaging in which the goods are shipped, is thus an important source of communication to the customer, and a perfect means of displaying the company values. This thesis project aims at examining how an optimal packaging for this area can be created, and this was done in collaboration with Arcwise, a SCA business unit, who works with a special type of corrugated cardboard that allows for the production of rounded shaped packages. During the contextual work of this project, where a basic analysis of the market was made, a number of needs could be established. To be able to create a positive user experience and thus a competitive edge in the market, these needs must be fulfilled by packages made for shipping online-bought items. Following these needs, the project’s design phase was carried out with the aim of creating a packaging solution by using the corrugated board developed by Arcwise. This work was done by using creative methods such as brainstorming, workshop and prototyping. To evaluate the ideas, a weighting against criteria was done, and tests were made when the packaging concepts were shipped from Sundsvall to Luleå, to test their durability. Six concepts were narrowed down to a final package, which clearly exhibits the prop-erties of the material. It was designed with the aim for easy folding and packing, and to create a positive unboxing experience for the end customer.

Fritz, Nathan Tyler. "Materials, design and processing of air encapsulated MEMS packaging." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/43751.

Abstract:
Air-gap structures are of particular interest for packaging of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). In this work, an overcoat material is used to cover a sacrificial polymer, which protects the MEMS device during packaging. Once the overcoat is in place, the sacrificial polymer is thermally decomposed freeing the MEMS structure while the overcoat dielectric provides mechanical protection from the environment. An epoxy POSS dielectric was used as a high-selectivity etch mask for the PPC and a rigid overcoat for the structure leading to the process improvements. The packaging structures can be designed for a range of MEMS device sizes and operating environments. However, the air-cavity structures need additional rigidity to withstand chip-level packaging conditions. Metalized air cavity packages were molded under traditional lead frame molding pressures and tested for mechanical integrity. The experimental molding tests and mechanical models were used to establish processing conditions and physical designs for the cavities as a function of cavity size. A semi-hermetic package was created using an in-situ sacrificial decomposition/epoxy cure molding step for creating large cavity chip packages. Through the optimization of the air cavity, new materials and processes were tested for general microfabrication. The epoxy POSS dielectric provides a resilient, strong inorganic/organic hybrid dielectric for use in microfabrication and packaging applications. Polycarbonates can be used for low cost temporary adhesives in wafer-wafer bonding. An improved electroless deposition process for silver and copper was developed. The Sn/Pd activation was replaced by a cost efficient Sn/Ag catalyst. The process was shown to be able to deposit adherent copper on smooth POSS and silicon dioxide surfaces. Electroless copper was demonstrated on untreated silicon oxide wafers for TSV sidewall deposition.

Sustainability is a multi-objective goal to achieve environmentally sound, socially just and economically viable. But existing packaging design research and practice usually does not cover all these aspects of sustainability. As the increasing demand of packaging is leading to more packaging induced problems, packaging-related impact on sustainability is gaining increasing concern and recognitions from consumers, organisations, and governments. Unlike conventional products, packaging's impact on sustainability does not reflect solely on itself at the product level; instead, comes from the logistics operations it involved, and from its interactions with packed goods and logistics operations at different phases of the supply chain. By exploring packaging and logistics interactions, this research proposed a framework for sustainable packaging system assessment, which integrates the packed goods, packaging and logistics into packaging logistics concept from holistic view. Then, a generic evaluation method was developed based on FMEA and QFD, to quantify the consideration of interactions between packaging, goods and logistic operations. It adds risk consideration into packaging's impact on sustainability. The proposed tool was then integrated into a simulation model for sustainable container supply chain evaluation, considering the container's similarity to packaging. Different case studies were conducted to validate and triangulate the proposed evaluation tools, illustrating how the proposed method help with decision-making support for sustainable packaging and container supply chain design. By help identifying sustainable packaging solution, and balancing cost/benefit for different supply chain parties, utilisation of sustainable packaging is also promoted by this study.

Abstract:
This study examines how novel packaging could be designed so that opening is easy for older people. Research into package openability is well established, possibly because of increases in the number of older people, whose ability to open packaging declines with ageing. However, research focusing on the design of indications that provide effective opening information for older people has not been extensive. Indications in this study were defined as packaging elements such as shapes, textures, symbols and diagrams. This study employed mixed methods research, based on a participatory design approach. Focus groups and in-depth interviews were used to provide rich insights into older peoples' design requirements for opening indications. Through focus groups, both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to accurately elicit design requirements derived from participants' varied views on openability of novel packaging samples. These combined data informed the creation of design recommendations for packaging concerning sensory, cognitive and hand functions. In-depth interviews recorded older peoples' interactions with packaging. These provided data consequently used to define the relationship between two and three dimensional indications. Design recommendations concerning the use of combined two and three dimensional indications were also developed. All research results were synthesised to create an indication centred Design Framework Tool. This new, practical tool presents design problems and solutions associated with the different stages of package opening alongside the cognitive processes that occur at each stage. Designers can use this tool to diagnostically create novel packaging that is easy for older people to open

Full text
Abstract:
Packaging is a "salesman" which is used as a marketing tool to assist product sales and deliver product information and attract consumers in conventional marketplaces. It also gives producers a voice in the retail environment. Since the introduction of E-commerce in the 1990's, these functions of packaging have not yet been reproduced in the virtual environment for products sold online. This research explores the meaning by which "online packaging" can be designed and implemented. Many researchers have identified that consumers find it difficult to buy online, due to poor product presentation and insufficient product information. They can easily obtain these functional advantages from physical packaging. Thus, the aim of this research is to explore a design guideline of online packaging for designers to better apply packaging thinking for products sold online. This research starts with practical work which contains five tentative studies and a final "laboratory online shop" providing a continuing process of development and evaluation of the research questions and engaging design principles. Rapid ethnographic methods were employed for the data collection. The data analysis and the practical design of online packaging were informed by the theory of Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). The result of the "laboratory online shop" is mainly consistent with the ELM's prediction and the research has resulted in design guidelines for online packaging, providing a framework for designers of online packaging. The guidelines integrate packaging thinking, the rapid ethnographic approaches and applications of the ELM theory, offering an opportunity for designers to apply the functions of packaging to products sold online. The approach helps designers to collect relevant background information before they design and evaluate developing designs. The guidelines influence designers to have a dual consideration of messages for consumers informed by the ELM's concept of "involvement" during the development of online packaging. Finally, a successful design of online packaging will not only depend on the designers, but retailers and manufacturers will also need to establish the infrastructure of an online shop, so that designers can apply online packaging to eCommerce.

Packaging plays an essential role in protecting a product from damage, attracting consumers to purchase a product, and facilitating storage and consumption. Yet its appreciation and value is quickly eroded once the product is purchased and/or consumed and the package becomes waste. With the passing of China's National Sword policy in 2018, post-consumer materials recycling markets are threatened and resources are not being recovered due to high contamination rates. The development of new packaging material has surged in recent years but has not corresponded with development of the necessary recycling infrastructure. Consumers want to recycle but are confused about how to most effectively do so. Packaging continues to consume our finite resources and pollute our terrestrial and marine environments. This research takes a systems approach to understanding today's emerging waste challenges and identifies key obstacles that society should collectively solve. High impact opportunity areas include alignment amongst all key stakeholders, establishing standardized signage and labels, increasing consumer education, and tackling difficult-to-recycle materials through scaling up technology, enacting policy, providing materials alternatives with corresponding infrastructure, or redesigning packaging.

Problem definition and purpose: It is well known that the visual design of packages is an important marketing and positioning tool used to communicate brand identity. The visual design is particularly important on the packages of low-involement products and previous research have found that consumers often choose packages based on their apperance. It is interesting for the ever growing market of organic products to see how packages is used in positioning organic products and discover how consumers view the communication on organic packages. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the packages of organic products is used to visually communicate ecology, and investigate how consumers view the communication on the packages of organic products. Method and material: The methods used in this study were qualitative content analysis, which was used to analyze the packages and focus groups, which were used to analyze consumers perception of organic packages. Result: All of the analyzed packages used different visual elements to highlight their organic attributes on the package. The packages that best matched the consumers’ inplanted associations of organic products was the packages that was conveyed to best communicate an organic product. The consumers’ idea of a good visual design for an organic product included handwritten typography, natural-colored material and elements in green and brown colors.

Abstract:
Electrically conductive polymer composites, i.e. polymers filled with conductive fillers, may display a broad range of electrical properties. A rational design of fillers, filler surface chemistry and filler loading can tune the electrical properties of the composites to meet the requirements of specific applications. In this dissertation, two studies were discussed. In the first study, highly conductive composites with electrical conductivity close to that of pure metals were developed as environmentally-friendly alternatives to tin/lead solder in electronic packaging. Conventional conductive composites with silver fillers have an electrical conductivity 1~2 orders of magnitude lower than that of pure, even at filler loadings as high as 80-90 wt.%. It is found that the low conductivity of the polymer composites mainly results from the thin layer of insulating lubricant on commercial silver flakes. In this work, by modifying the functional groups in polymer backbones, the lubricant layer on silver could be chemically reduced in-situ to generate silver nanoparticles. Furthermore, these nanoparticles could sinter to form metallurgical bonds during the curing of the polymer matrix. This resulted in a significant electrical conductivity enhancement up to 10 times, without sacrificing the processability of the composite or adding extraneous steps. This method was also applied to develop highly flexible/stretchable conductors as building block for flexible/stretchable electronics. In the second study, a moderately conductive carbon/polymer composite was developed for use in sensors to monitor the thermal aging of insulation components in nuclear power plants. During thermal aging, the polymer matrix of this composite shrank while the carbon fillers remained intact, leading to a slight increase in filler loading and a substantial decrease in the resistivity of the sensors. The resistivity change was used to correlate with the aging time and to predict the need for maintenance of the insulation component according to Arrhenius’ equation. This aging sensor realized real-time, non-destructive monitoring capability for the aging of the target insulation component for the first time.

A design for the use of evacuated Perlite insulation in the shipment of perishable goods was analyzed, implemented, and evaluated, with the goal of replacing or reducing the amount of phase-change materials needed to ship such goods by standard package carriers. The package design makes use of inexpensive materials and relatively simple operations to completely surround perishable items in a layer of evacuated Perlite insulation, bounded by inner and outer bags of high-barrier film. A vacuum chamber and sealing apparatus were constructed in order to fabricate these evacuated Perlite packages, and a microcontroller-based temperature-logging sensor was developed and built for in-situ temperature measurement over several days' time span. Due to problems with the reliability of the fabrication apparatus and the package structure, no experimental data could be obtained to evaluate the performance of the package design with evacuated insulation. Control data validated the function of the temperature sensor, which may have applications to other projects. The package design still appears to be viable, but a more reliable sealing and evacuating apparatus must be constructed and a more robust way to package goods within the insulation layer must be devised.

Minimalism originates from Modernism in the early 20th Century. Its key features are to make elements, colours and materials stripped to their absolute essentials. It only keeps the simplest form to make sure the quality is the finest. Therefore, minimalist designs appear to be implicit. With their essential and elemental aspects, minimalist designs normally manage to have greater impact than complicated, multi-faceted ones. Minimalism is often associated with the modern architect Mies Vander Rohe’s quotation, ‘less is more’, which is considered as the core ideas of Minimalism. Commercial packaging conveys the message from the producers to the consumers. As the development of the technology and living conditions, the packaging design has also been evolving from sophisticated to simple. The purpose of boosting sales gave impetus to the need for more lavish or even excessive packaging. The focus on multiple packaging and inappropriate consumption habits have become a burden to the environment. Nowadays, people are seeking peace and simplicity in the hectic and complex daily life. Minimalist design has therefore penetrated many fields of architecture, space, produce and graphics. It has also had influences on people’s thinking, values and concepts. Minimalism conveys its message through simplicity and essence and it is indeed what meets people’s desire for simple and unsophisticated things. This paper aims to study Minimalist styles, and to discuss modern Minimalist designs’ purpose and their appearances. It hopes to clarify the following issues: (1) How Minimalist-style packaging is presented in different fields, (2) The environmental awareness showed in packaging designs which applied Minimalism, (3) How Minimalist design and modern technology RFID are integrated to form a new era. The essence of design is to connect MI, BI and VI through the arrangement of components such as texts, colours and space. Therefore, with this in mind, people are seeking to be closer to simple, natural forms. This concept meets the purpose of Minimalism and gives people space to breathe. It also relieves the burdens imposed on people when seeing over packaging designs.

Taiwan is a country with abundant and diversified cultures. Not only for its achievements in developing cultural industries in these years, its successful package establishing for businesses has also effectively pushed Taiwan to global stage. Life has been made easier with science; computer has taken over daily trivial things, however, it also brings storage issues. Amongst computer formats, the most widely-used storage device is “CD disc”, which can be used for boosting CD disc storage and for recycling purposes. Therefore, CD disc can be used in daily lives, including music CD, data storage, and computer software. As per Environmental Protection Administration Executive Yuan “Year 2002 blank disc and read-only disc sales volume in the country is approximately 8.8 hundred millions; hence, in Year 2002 990 tons (approximately 60 millions disc) discarded discs were produced for the entire year in Year 2002.” However, while we enjoy convenient and environmental protected lives with technology, we also produce junks, which bring one big burden to the earth. Therefore, this presents clearly the importance of CD disc package. This research is focused on CD disc package market as its main topic, which also combines environmental protected concept study and designs serial CD disc packer market’s extensive uses and references. This thesis’ main scope can be divided into three parts: 1. Documentary Discussion: Understanding CD disc’s history, investigate and analyze disc’s evolution that makes it the major storage media, and available CD disc package categories in the market, and present innovative CD disc package from this. 2. Data Analysis: Present new CD disc package based on current CD disc package design is essential requirement and needs to notice current package defects for improvements. 3. Experimental Innovation: Experiment innovative structure and apply that onto CD disc package; design serial innovative CD disc structure package. Package design has been the first and most direct connection between customers and product providers. This thesis proposes that the ultimate design creation explores merging of design and product perspectives, and demonstrate the significance of package design in modern business package market.

Implantable biomicrosystems for neural function restoration have gained more attention for studying the characteristics of various types of neural interfaces. In our previous study, we have developed a microprocessor-based microstimulation system by using the Surface Mount Devices (SMDs) components on Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and stimulating electrodes, prepared for implantation on animal functional electrical stimulation (FES) studies. The main theme of this study is to investigate the feasibility of packaging design of an implantable microstimulator. In current study, Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) fabrication process for microassembly and interconnection on flexible polyimide substrates was employed to integrate microstimulator circuitry and nerve cuff electrodes as an implantable biomicrosystem for peripheral nerve applications to achieve a module package. The flexible mechanical structure design of microstimulator is more suitable for module design and implantation purposes. Dam-and-fill process was applied to seal the module, which was later encapsulated with medical grade silicone rubber for biocompatible package. The implantable microstimulator measured 4 cm in diameter and 8 mm in height with cuff electrode interconnected to it. Finally, in vitro experiment in the normal saline has confirmed that it is feasible to employ dam-and-fill encapsulation and medical-grade silicone rubber to package the biomicrosystem for a period of 30 days. The microstimulator is undergoing in vivo tests through the implantation to stimulate rabbit’s sciatic nerve.

Abstract:
QA bearing technologies Ltd. (hereafter QA) is a custom manufacturer of bearings in a variety of types and sizes. This research concerns one of the processes in QA’s bearing manufacturing in which the individual bearings, once assembled, are packaged to prevent corrosion and attack from any environmental influence. QA currently employs a manual process, which is time-consuming and significantly limits QA’s productivity. This greatly raises a need to improve this process through the design of an automated process for bearing packaging. Various kinds of packaging machine are available in the market for this application. However, most of them are designed for general packaging purpose and simply combining them may result in the functional overlap as applied to the packaging process. This research aims to design an automatic bearing packaging system (ABPS) based on an advanced design theory, i.e., Axiomatic Design Theory (ADT). In the first part of this research, a set of general functional requirements (FRs) and constraints (CONs) were defined specifically based on the needs from the customers. All FRs were maintained independent to each other such that the following design wouldn’t result in functional overlap. Then, design parameters (DPs) in general level were created to satisfy the defined FRs, each being a functionally independent subsystem consists of both custom-design components and products existing in the market. The second part of the research was to decompose the FRs and DPs based on independent axiom of ADT into further levels until the conceptual design was accomplished. In this process, acceptable alternatives in different hierarchies were proposed for comparison in the decision making process. Also, the relationship between FRs and DPs in the same level was always maintained one-to-one, which allows readily for modification in future, if needed. In the third part of this research, the information axiom of ADT was utilized to find the best solution from alternatives. For this, each alternative was evaluated in terms of the information content that reflects the possibility of satisfying the objective FR. The one with least information content was determined as the best alternative. As a result of this research, two solutions with different degree of automation were recommended for the bearing packaging system. The first solution is featured with higher degree of automation and capable of packaging bearings with limited human interface and as result, the total cost for its implementation is relatively high. The second solution integrates semi-automated machines and simplified sealing strategy and as such, the cost for its implementation is significantly reduced. After the conceptual design is complete, ADT is further applied in the detailed design level for oiling system with custom-designed components and mechanism. For the design of certain DPs, the design process applying ADT is used to compare with conventional methods, proved to be more efficient and simplified. Eventually, the final solution proposed for the detailed design of oiling system is consistent with independent axiom of ADT.

Abstract Buying, this thing is at any corner in our modern business world. The process and relationship of goods from producers to customers is very different from the past. How to use the design of package to accelerate the buying, that is the point for producers to think. Therefore, there are many skills and ideas for design of package. By the spread thinking of “green issue”, environmentally friendly design is also important for designer to consider. A.The goal of our research is investigating how the ideas of using green package design reality, then making case studies, digging out the concept of”green” in process of package design. Finally, using the concept to make the deigns is purpose. B. The range of the review study contain packaging design, green packaging design, and the design for paper products which common use in the design world, then discussing and summing found: (A) The elements of the package design is to identify, color, symbol, display, memory and functions, and showing through color, shape, graphics and text. (B) The primary spirit of the green packaging design is to create a "closed loop", like "make-to-make" of the practice, and make the implementation by 3R (reduction, reuse, recycling), etc.. By the support of citation, we can understand the relationship of paper packing production with green cycle. Then, using the better design of paper packing can induce closer recycle to make much “green”. The third part of our research focuses on case study. We analysis the case:"2012 Taipei packaging green magic”, Taipei product packaging Assistance Program. The following is our result. For the idea of green packing to the real market, we think that the approach rate is still need to improve.Appearance of goods is very important, it transmit the green idea, attract the consumers, access to win in the business world. The green packing not only focuses on reduce the impact after consume, but also need to reduce the produce in the source, or try to use more green material. According to discuss of information from citation and case study, we design the packing and analysis the result. Here sums up our found. Besides the choice of material, the designers should try their best to give consumer a green think in the invisible message, and increase the focus to protecting environment issues; it will make better impression to the company. It is benefit to both, company and consumer. After reduce the source material and the environment impact, it will cause many limit on the design, such as simplification of the structure, material savings and principles for the use of a single material. The designers need to spark their idea to overcome the difficult and make the simply design, which is in keeping with “green”. On the level of green packing design, cases in case study or our designs after analysis, they cannot reach the 100% approach rate in real business world. The main reason is due to the different requires of properties qualities, sales demands of the product itself and the packaging design. Although the achieving proportional to the degree of product packaging green. But it will still be affected because the product or brand itself demands of.

Abstract:
All projects employ work packaging to divide the project scope into manageable portions of work for planning and execution. Enhanced work packaging, however, provides an organized and structured approach to planning through the project lifecycle in order to provide the construction work face with everything they need to successfully execute their work. This approach leads to increased field productivity and project predictability in terms of cost and schedule. Construction Industry Institute (CII) Research Team (RT) 272 developed a lifecycle execution model that encompasses recommendations for implementing enhanced work packaging throughout the project lifecycle. The model provides work packaging steps and considerations for each project phase from project definition through construction to system turnover. The model was founded upon industry practices as recorded in literature, team experiences, and through case studies and expert interviews. These recommendations were validated in conjunction with the case studies and through expert review. When properly implemented, enhanced work packaging improves field productivity, cost and schedule predictability, safety performance, and reduced rework, amongst other benefits.
