The devotion to the Immaculate Conception in Vila Viçosareassembles to the Middle Age. With the establishment of House of Braganza in the locality, was extremely estimated by the ducal family. Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe elevation of the Portuguese Royal Chapel to the rank of Patriarchal Church in 1716 was part of a larger process of ‘Romanization’ – that is, of assimilation and adaptation of Roman models within Portuguese music and culture. This involved the training of numerous chaplain-singers and young Portuguese composers in Rome, as well as the importation of chant books, ministers, singers and even the maestro di cappella of the Cappella Giulia, Domenico Scarlatti. According to the anonymous ‘Breve rezume de tudo o que se canta en cantochaõ, e canto de orgaõ pellos cantores na santa igreja patriarchal’ (Brief summary of all that is sung in plainchant and polyphony by the singers at the holy Patriarchal Church) – a document written at some point between 1722 and 1724 – the repertory of the Patriarchal Church was a varied mixture of works by thirty-two identified composers, mostly Italian and Portuguese, from a period ranging from the sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. Some of the repertory for Holy Week is also extant in three large choirbooks prepared by a copyist from the Patriarchal Church in 1735 and 1736 for use in the Ducal Chapel in Vila Viçosa. These include ‘modern’ additions to late sixteenth-century and seventeenth-century pieces and also some curious reworkings, made with the purpose of adjusting older works to newly ‘Romanized’ performance conditions and aesthetic ideals. The sources examined in this article thus show that Portuguese ‘Romanization’, far from being a simple transplantation of ideas and practices from the centre to the periphery, was a dynamic process of acculturation and adaptation rooted in emerging forms of historical consciousness.

É objectivo deste trabalho estudar a transformação do Paço de Vila Viçosa em Museu da Casa de Bragança. Administrativamente o Museu-Biblioteca é criado em 1933, cumprindo o testamento do último rei de Portugal, D. Manuel de Bragança. Por razões várias só em 1945 se iniciam as obras de adaptação do edifício e de reorganização das colecções. Analisa-se a transformação operada e os pressupostos teóricos que lhe estão subjacentes, na área da Museologia, e da recuperação monumental. Encontrámos dados que refutam algumas convicções expressas em trabalhos recentes, a intervenção no Paço de Vila Viçosa realizou-se entre 1945 e 60, por outro lado, o seu espólio integra um reduzido número do património artístico propriedade dos membros da família reinante até 1910. /*** Abstract - The subject of this study is the transformation of the Palace of Vila Viçosa, former royal residente, into a museum. The administrative change took place in 1933 after the death of its last owner, Dom Manuel of Braganza, the last king of Portugal, in order to fulfil his will. However, due to several reasons, that space was only transformed and opera to the general public after 1945. We study the way the intervention took place and the theorithical conceptions involved, both in museological and architectural terms. It enabled us to tackle some preconceptions established around this museum. We have found evidence confirming that the entire work of restoration of the building and museographic display of the collections was done after 1945, contradicting recent scientific works. Also, the investigation showed that little of what was due to be restored to the family reigning up to 1910, in terms of works of art, was ever returned. The collection of the museum holds only a short part of the works that once belonged to the Braganza family.

Abstract:
A presente dissertação de mestrado é realizada no âmbito da História da Arte e visa promover, divulgar, preservar e perpetuar um património que, sendo único, se torna testemunho insubstituível da História. A Capela do Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa, edificado há mais de cinco séculos, assistiu ao longo da sua existência a diversas alterações e remodelações. No século XIX, a mando do Príncipe Regente D. João VI, 15º Duque de Bragança, durante o reinado de D. Maria I, a Capela vê o seu interior ser alvo de uma remodelação profunda. Visa esta dissertação dar a conhecer de forma detalhada a renovação oitocentista da Capela, realizada no curto período registado entre 1806 e 1807, procurando contextualizá-la no espaço e no tempo. Assumindo uma metodologia baseada na leitura e análise crítica da bibliografia disponível e em fontes históricas confrontadas com a sua comprovação no terreno, o objectivo é definir os processos de obras que se realizaram à responsabilidade do arquitecto José da Costa e Silva. Para tal, o presente trabalho divide-se em três vertentes: os programas de obras, os seus protagonistas e os materiais que tornaram possíveis a concretização da obra. Esta divisão permitirá ter uma visão alargada e integrada de como a renovação da Capela se realizou nas suas variadas perspectivas, acompanhando todo o seu desenvolvimento até à sua conclusão. As invasões francesas colidiram com o abandono da obra de Costa e Silva, que só veria a sua conclusão já em 1823, quando o Almoxarife João dos Santos assume o cargo de responsável pela campanha de conservação e restauro do Paço Ducal, incluindo a Capela. A renovação da Capela no século XIX ganha, assim, um novo testemunho, contribuindo para o conhecimento da História da Arte e do Património e para o acrescento de nova informação para a História do Paço Ducal.

Abstract:
The collection of the musical archive of the Paço Ducal of Vila Viçosa contains 20 volumes of Renaissance polyphony from both Portuguese and foreign composers, mostly Spanish. The present study focuses on two sets of Responsories of the Matins of Holy Thursday that are in the volumes VV. A6 / J12 and VV. A9 / J15 of the composers Tomás Luis de Victoria, Manuel Soares and Fernando de Almeida. A critical edition of all the Responsories and Lamentations by Manuel Soares and Fernando de Almeida was carried out, aiming not only to enable the analysis of his pieces, but mainly to contribute to the dissemination of the Vila Viçosa estate and to allow the current interpretation of this repertoire in public. Starting from the comparison of both musical sets, the analysis of all the works was carried out in order to contribute to the understanding and identification of the personal aesthetic characteristics of each composer.
O espólio do arquivo musical do Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa contém 20 volumes de polifonia renascentista tanto de compositores portugueses como estrageiros, sendo estes maioritariamente espanhóis. O presente estudo foca-se em dois conjuntos de Responsórios das Matinas de Quinta-feira Santa que se encontram nos volumes VV. A6/J12 e VV. A9/J15 dos compositores Tomás Luis de Victoria, Manuel Soares e Fernando de Almeida. Foi realizada a edição crítica de todos os Responsórios e Lamentações da autoria de Manuel Soares e de Fernando de Almeida, com o objetivo não só de possibilitar a análise das suas peças, mas principalmente o de contribuir para a divulgação do espólio de Vila Viçosa e permitir a interpretação atual deste repertório em público. Partindo da comparação de ambos os conjuntos musicais, foi realizada a análise de todas as obras com vista a contribuir para a compreensão e identificação de características estílicas pessoais de cada compositor.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the nature and uses of music in early Luso-Brazilian theater from the eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. The first part considers the processes and choices that determined the formation of a theatrical music repertory during the late colonial period. The second part describes the extant musical sources of theatrical music once performed in Portuguese America and now at libraries and archives in Portugal (Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa, Biblioteca do Palácio da Ajuda) and Brazil (Acervo Curt Lange, Biblioteca da UFRJ, Museu da Música de Mariana), as well as those that have disappeared but can be identified through nonmusical sources. The chapter closes with a discussion ofthe first examples of sung-through Italian operas composed in Brazil.
