Experiments with porous ceramic membranes and leaves of Nymphaea alba L. are described which demonstrate that the counter diffusion of gaseous components of different molar mass governed by Graham’s law of diffusion (not to be confused with Graham’s law of effusion) has to be taken into account to understand the exchange processes of gases between leaves of aquatic and amphibic plants and the outer atmosphere. The experiments are carried out under conditions under which the ratio of the maximum pore size r of the ceramic material to the mean free path length λ. of the molecules in air has a va

Abstract:
The Jackson Purchase region of western Kentucky consists of Coastal Plain sediments near the northern margin of the Mississippi Embayment. Within this region is the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), a uranium enrichment facility operated by the US Department of Energy. At PGDP, a Superfund site, soil and groundwater studies have provided subsurface lithologic data from hundreds of monitoring wells and borings. Despite preliminary efforts by various contractors, these data have not been utilized to develop detailed stratigraphic correlations of sedimentary units across the study area. In

Abstract:
This paper describes the In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) remediation being implemented for the X-701B groundwater plume at the Department of Energy (DOE) Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS). Modified Fenton’s reagent is the principal oxidant for the remedy, and Direct Push Technology (DPT) is being used for delivery of the oxidant. Trichloroethene (TCE) is the primary contaminant of concern and is present within the unit as a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). A phased approach is being implemented to optimize the type, location, and mass of the oxidant injections. During Phase I
