Abstract:
Several of the great religious faiths have an ambiguous attitude towards wisdom. While sometimes it is said to be ‘more precious than rubies’, in other passages the desire for wisdom seems almost like a betrayal of God. More exactly, it is often cast as a pagan, perhaps peculiarly Greek, aspiration that somehow blinds people to what is really important—either acting with steadfast love and justice (Jeremiah) or proclaiming Christ crucified (St Paul). This chapter develops a general conception of wisdom that tries to make sense of these various attitudes. It also applies the view to a variety o

Abstract:
For centuries, historians have claimed that Rogationtide is a Christianized adaptation of a pagan festival, the Ambarvalia. This chapter scrutinizes Roman sources for the Ambarvalia in order to demonstrate that no such syncretism ever occurred. The genealogy of this spurious Ambarvalia story illuminates how the standard Christianization paradigm rests on theology. This claim about Rogation syncretism is a remnant of medieval typology and Reformation polemic, which arose and spread because it helped clerics delineate what kinds of practices were or were not appropriately “Christian.” Early medi

This book discusses the political theology developed by German Jewish philosophy in the 20th century on the basis of its original reconstruction of the teachings of Jewish prophetology. In the shadow of the modern experiences with anti-Semitism, the rise of Zionism, and the return of charismatic authority in mass societies, the discourse of Jewish political theology advances the radical hypothesis that the messianic idea of God’s Kingdom correlates with a post-sovereignty, anarchist political condition of radical non-domination. However, this messianic form of democracy, far from being antinom

The Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Colossians offers a valuable and intimate glimpse into the life of a fledgling Christian community as it struggled to define Christian doctrine and theology. Paul was prompted to write to the Colossian assembly when he heard that “false teachers” had joined the congregation and were advocating dangerous, non-Christian practices. In an effort to appear superior, these heretical teachers were luring Christians to exercise asceticism, moral rigorism, and esoteric rituals―hallmarks of other “mystery” and pagan cults. At the centre of the clerical vocation was the conundrum of balancing the clergy’s commitment to chastity with the many aspects of their professional training and responsibilities that either tacitly or overtly concerned sex. On a pedagogical level, there were pagan authors, like the sexually savvy Ovid, who were at the cornerstone of the acquisition of letters. But biblical tradition, theology, and ascetical literature also treated sexuality and sexual temptation very explicitly. Such concerns loom even larger on a practical level. Early Christian political philosophy is not a unified, theoretical, and coherent system, but is embedded in a range of Christian works of apology, theology, and exegesis. Literate (and therefore elite) Christians from the apologists to Augustine were subject to a range of political and social pressures, and their political thinking was often contingent and incidental. What is the ultimate goal of political life for Christians? What is the good life for Christians? Between Constantine's reign and that of Theodosius at the close of the fourth century, emperors veered from the pious to the “heret

The Roman emperor Julian is a figure of ongoing interest and the subject of this book. This unique examination of Julian as the last pagan emperor and anti-Christian polemicist revolves around his drive and status as a ruler. The book outlines the dramatic impact of Julian's short-lived regime on the course of history, with a particular emphasis on his relationship with Christianity. Julian has experienced a wide-ranging reception throughout history, shaped by both adulation and vitriol, along with controversies and rumors that question his sanity and passive ruling.
