Williams, Caroline. "It's Not a Beauty Pageant!: An Examination of Leadership Development through Alaska Native Pageants." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/293488.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the adaptation of traditionally objectified women's spaces, into an arena for leadership development, research which incorporates the development of culturally relevant mechanisms of leadership training within Indigenous societies. Cultural pageants offer a place for young women to become spokespersons on social justice issues, without the sexual objectification of entering beauty pageants. Such pageants also provide a glimpse of how cultural groups wish their national identity to be portrayed to the general public. Fifty years in the making, today's Native Nations cultural pageants have been decolonized to present images of young leaders, confident in their heritage, introducing themselves in their Native language, and committed to cultural continuity and sustainable Nations. This research examines a state-wide Alaska Native pageant, Miss World Eskimo Indian Olympics, from three perspectives: 1) The young women who develop culturally based leadership skills; 2) The community, who gains language and cultural, revitalization and maintenance role models; 3) And the general public, who gains a much needed positive representation of a contemporary Indigenous women. This study draws from interdisciplinary theories and research methodologies (including observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, surveys, and archival research) and follows the young women through to the contest at the national level, Miss Indian World, run annually in Albuquerque, through Gathering of Nations. The underlying hypothesis is that women use cultural pageants as a stepping stone to advance their cultural leadership. In doing so, they promote factors of community well-being affecting Indigenous communities, such as suicide prevention, substance abuse, and language and cultural revitalization.

Heltsley, Martha. "Beauty Pageant Mothers: Demographics, Motivations, and Family Structure." TopSCHOLAR®, 1998. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/311.

Full text
Abstract:
An exploratory analysis of national beauty pageants for children was conducted through the administration of a questionnaire and through observation. The population surveyed was mothers with daughters sixteen years old or under. Questionnaires were distributed at six national pageants in five states with a total of 134 respondents. The questionnaire probed a variety of areas concerning the child's involvement, expenses incurred, beauty enhancements worn, and general demographic information concerning the contestant's family. Attitudinal statements concerning the role of women in society and the importance of beauty in society were investigated. A comparison was made between the attitudes of the pageant mother and a sample of mothers taken from the 1993 General Social Survey. The results suggested that pageant mothers were more supportive about the changing roles of women. In addition, mothers were given an attractiveness scale on which they rated themselves and their daughters. Data analysis on a variety of variables was carried out at univariate and bivariate levels.

Austin, Jill Hemming. "Performing the past| Two pageant traditions in Nauvoo, Illinois." Thesis, Indiana University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3715827.

Full text
Abstract:

Jill Hemming Austin PERFORMING THE PAST: TWO PAGEANT TRADITIONS IN NAUVOO, ILLINOIS The founders of American historical pageantry were keenly interested in the social effect of pageant performance on audience and participants. Their vision for social transformation through performance endures into the present day with those who continue to promulgate the form. Examining two enduring pageant traditions in Nauvoo, Illinois affords a better understanding of how the formal features of outdoor historical pageant production and the social relations that underlie them are still potentially powerful for those who participate in their production and performance. This dissertation encourages serious study of pageants as a unique performance form particularly attuned to the tasks of building continuities and tradition, the reinforcement of group sentiment, and the propitiation of group myth. Nauvoo, Illinois is a historically contested site boasting two historical pageants dedicated to the portrayal of the Nauvoo story: The Grape Festival Pageant and The Nauvoo Pageant. Christened ?Nauvoo? by Mormon [LDS] refugees in the mid-19th century, the thriving city?s overwhelming social discord drove the Mormons west, and the town was resettled and reclaimed by new seekers and settlers. The legendary quality of Nauvoo continued to grow in the Mormon imagination, eventually leading to a reclamation process including heritage development. Competing claims on local history has led to a heightened historical consciousness among townsfolk and ongoing public presentation from multiple perspectives. The two pageants are cultural displays that influence this ongoing social process. Both derive from distinct traditions--the local drama squarely planted in American historical pageantry and the Mormon-sponsored pageant deriving from LDS social and religious culture. Historical pageants have some unique formal features that make them particularly interesting to folklorists. They depend heavily on sacred localities, tradition, legend, and large-group participation for their success. The story told gains power from familiarity and reinforcement of cherished group values. However, changing tastes and sensibilities have challenged the survival of pageants as a relevant cultural form into the present. Drawing on interviews, field observation, and historical research, the contemporary context of the town and its two performances is fleshed out in the voices of four individuals who have participated in the pageants.

Bowers, Ebony. "Social Stereotyping and Self-Esteem of Miss America Pageant Contestants." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2791.

Full text
Abstract:
Miss America Pageant contestants (MAPCs) have been negatively stereotyped socially for their perceived lack of intelligence and nonconformance to feminist gender stereotypes of women. Stereotypes could affect an individual's social psyche and establish stigma, which could prevent a group from achieving their full potential. Stereotypes could also result in women having mental health disorders, low self-esteem, a decrease in self-efficacy, body image dissatisfaction, and eating disorders. The problem this study addressed was that women who participate in the Miss America Organization (MAO) preliminary pageants risk social stigma for taking part in a seemingly nonfeminist activity. Intercultural communication research (ICR) was the theoretical framework utilized to understand the role of cultural stereotypes, prejudice in communication, and self-perception among MAPCs. The main research question examined how local preliminary MAPC's decide to participate in pageantry in relation to their beliefs about stereotypes of MAPCs. For this multiple case study, a sample of MAPCs (n =5) from a Southeastern state was recruited to participate in interviews and provided narrative data that was coded and analyzed for themes of stereotypes, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. The key findings from this study revealed that the participants believed that societal stereotypes of MAPCs still exist, but the stereotypes did not influence participants' self-esteem, self-efficacy, and their decisions to compete and represent their social platform. The results also revealed a need for societal education about MAO pageant system's mission. Positive social change can come from understanding the MAPC subculture to dispel societal stereotypes and through presenting MAPCs' goals as social change agents.

Gragg, Joan Elisabeth. "Seeing the funny side: focusing on Cook Islands humour in the experience of the religious pageant Nuku." AUT University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/908.

Abstract:
This multi-media art project investigates the notion of Cook Islands humour, and subsequently place, through the context of the religious pageant Nuku. This pageant has been practiced annually in the Cook Islands for over one hundred and sixty years. While it is not a pageant based on humour, I suggest, through experience and research, that many of the characteristics of Cook Islands humour are revealed in Nuku. The aim of this project is not to recreate the narrative set out in the Nuku pageant but to use this event to explore ways to visually express the humour of the Cook Islands. After researching and experimenting in two dimensional mediums, my emphasis changed to experimenting with three dimensional mediums, incorporating materials that have connotative meanings in Cook Islands society.

Pickering, Mark. "The insubstantial pageant : is there a civil religious tradition in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Religious Studies, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8128.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the concept of 'civil religion' and whether it is applicable to some aspects of New Zealand society. The origin, development and criticism of the concept is discussed, drawing on such scholars as Robert Bellah and John F. Wilson in the United States, and on recent New Zealand commentators. Using material such as Anzac Day and Waitangi Day commemorations, Governor-Generals' speeches, observance of Dominion Day and Empire Day, prayers in Parliament, the role of Norman Kirk, and other related phenomena, the thesis considers whether this 'evidence' substantiates the existence of a civil religion. The difficulties that confront any attempted analysis of a civil religion are discussed, with some reflection on the usefulness and applicability of the concept in current New Zealand society. The conclusion is reached, that under the terms of the study area, the suggestion that a civil religion currently exists in New Zealand is not soundly based on the evidence available.

Full text
Abstract:
The "Rabin Ahau," Daughter of the King in Q'eqchi, is elected annually in a pageant in Coban, Guatemala to represent indigenous women before the Guatemalan nation. Although the contest takes the form of a beauty pageant, the criterion on which the candidates are judged is their authenticity as Maya women; their authenticity, in turn, guarentees Guatemala's distinctiveness in the international community of nations. This thesis explores what signifying authenticity requires of would-be Rabin Ahaus, when being Maya at all in Guatemala has historically been life-threatening. It links the aestheticization of Indianness to the ethnocidal racism which literally erases Maya bodies from the national territory, and examines how Guatemalan nationalist discourse uses mimesis and commodification of "the Indian" to create and control an Indian essence; it indicates, also, how the participants in the contest work mimetic excess to triangulate official authenticity and assert different meanings of the Maya.

Perry, Pamela Ann. "Behind the Curtain of the Beauty Pageant: An Investigation of U.S. News Undergraduate Business Program Rankings." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194322.

Abstract:
The undergraduate business program rankings in USNWR are based solely on peer assessments from deans and associate deans of AACSB accredited U.S. business schools. Often these reputation-based rankings are discounted and likened to a beauty pageant because the process lacks transparent input data.In this study, ten deans and ten associate deans representing top 50 USNWR undergraduate business programs were interviewed. Seven of the institutions are public and three are private and all but two universities are AAU member institutions. The research answers the following questions: how do deans and associate deans define quality in their school's undergraduate program and in other schools' programs? How are administrators influenced when evaluating the reputation of peer schools? Are competitors treated differently when evaluating academic reputation? What methods are administrators utilizing to influence brand perception with their stakeholder and educational peers?Business school deans and associate deans emphasized different aspects of an undergraduate program in their description of quality. The deans most valued quality from faculty and research. The associate deans valued the undergraduate experience including sense of community, engagement, involvement, leadership, student services, as creating distinction in a program.Business school administrators are barraged by influences that affect their perceptions about program reputations. Overall the influences on perception included quality of faculty, research, student standardized test scores, resources, characteristics of an institution, professional involvement and social networks including networks with faculty, students, other professionals and employers that provide feedback about schools. Professional involvement and social networks (PhD students, other deans, siblings, friends, students, employers, etc.) provided administrators with important insight into academic reputation. The quality of people that the administrators knew from other schools made a difference in peer schools' reputation. Finally, most schools employ integrated marketing communication (IMC) including taglines, direct marketing, event marketing, feature promotions, customer service and brand messages to influence stakeholders and peers. This study confirmed that everyone in a business school is a brand manager because brand is influenced through numbers of interactions over time with a variety of stakeholders. True to the IMC framework, business schools have moved to a relationship driven educational model.

Abstract:

Harvey, Elizabeth Loyd. "Same place next summer: permanent chautauquas and the performance of middle-class identity." Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/979.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the impact of the permanent chautauqua movement in American culture, especially in the period from 1874 to 1935. It argues that chautauquas served as sites for the production of middle-class culture and the renegotiation of relationships among class, gender, race, and religion. Permanent chautauquas were popular vacation resorts throughout the United States, beginning with the founding of the Chautauqua Sunday School Assembly in upstate New York and increasing in number to about two hundred in 1900. They were associations of cottages offering community programs that were educational, religious, and entertaining. This dissertation examines the programs that the chautauquas planned, arguing that they espoused a burgeoning form of culture, one that supported a perceived morality and middle-class values like dedication to family, temperance, education, patriotism, piety, and fighting against temptation to sin. Particular emphasis is placed on how performance at permanent chautauquas led to new expectations of gender, class, race, and religion. Women had opportunities for leadership, were able to blur lines between public and private spheres, and could act out different expectations of their gender while on the grounds. While most chautauquans were middle class, attending a chautauqua meant that one's class was not important and all could enjoy a middle-class vacation. While the line between whites and non-whites remained stable, non-whites were granted performance opportunities at chautauquas that they might not have had; other non-whites participated as members of the work force that allowed white chautauquans the leisure they expected. Because chautauquas were Protestant communities, religion underlaid all activities on the grounds, redefining expectations of how religion and entertainment could be combined. Taken together, these renegotiations of identity at chautauquas impacted a broader American culture. This dissertation examines the performances at chautauqua, in particular the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle and their Recognition Day graduation ceremony; historical pageantry; professional performers who visited as part of the circuit chautauquas; and early film exhibition. It places them in a broader American performance context and argues that permanent chautauquas played a role in their development and popularity. It draws upon archival records from the chautauquas to outline the kinds of programming presented. Additionally, the research is supported by anecdotal evidence from a series of oral history interviews conducted with individuals who recall their childhoods at permanent chautauquas.

Abstract:
In recent years, old-hand development scholars, in the category of Dan Brockington, have expressed their concern over academia’s neglect of the significance of celebrities in the field. As has been the case of an outturn hereof, namely beauty pageants. In the last six decades, Venezuela has positioned itself not only as one of the world's largest exporters of oil but also as one of the leading engenderers of titleholders in international pageantry. The latter, which has resulted in Venezuelans regarding the pageant as a fundamental cultural undercurrent in their collective identity, seems to be a ceaseless manifestation in spite of the country’s worrisome current socio-economic status. Rather than adopting a condescending paradigm towards the Miss Venezuela pageant, it is precisely this vertex of ambiguity that opens the avenue for an interesting development question. After all, if celebrity beauty queens from Venezuela are deemed as part of the nation’s identity, could the pageant, in the same breath, be deemed as a contributor to communication for development? While espousing historical context as an analysing method and in pursuit of David Hulme’s Celebrity-Development nexus and Elizabeth McCall’s four strands of communication for development, this paper presents a qualitative study in which hands-on experts are given a platform. The findings show the evolution of a beauty pageant from a, nearly, nationalist device into a system that is grounded in the Millennium Development Goals and that aims to forge socially responsible beauty representatives that are competent enough to herald purposeful messages.

Abstract:
Throughout the 1950s and '60s Ansel Adams and Nancy Newhall collaborated on eight books devoted to photography. Two of these publications stand apart as books which were distinctly commercial in character. The Pageant of History in Northern California (1954), created for the American Trust Company of San Francisco, and Fiat Lux (1967), commissioned by the University of California, are linked by a number of interesting similarities. The ultimate function was identical--to create a work that would reflect the institution's commitment to the State of California. This essay will examine the character of Adams's photographs, Newhall's text, and their collaboration itself. It will explore the decisions and compromises Adams and Newhall were compelled to make between the requirements of the commercial commission and the preservation of their personal agenda of promoting photography as a tool of visual communication.

Abstract:
Joanna Murray-Smith and Daniel Keene are both successful mid-career Melbourne playwrights. Taking them as a starting point and re-tracing an Australian theatrical lineage, this project explores new Melbourne narratives in which two branches of the Australian theatrical idiom converge in a single creative work, my play Friday Night, In Town. An analysis of the writing of Friday Night, In Town, authored by myself and presented for examination herein, demonstrates its narratives are structured with deliberate reference to Murray-Smith and Keene revealing a new form of contemporary urban playwriting. The play's originality, it will be shown, and its contribution to new knowledge, lie in its engagement with these playwrights and their Australian predecessors. These elements combine with a redeployment of the medieval pageant-play, which is thus reinvigorated as a mode of contemporary playwriting practice. The play text presented herein (Friday Night, In Town) represents 75 per cent of the weighting for this M.A. (by Research) with the exegetical component weighted at 25 per cent.

Pompei, Luca. "Temporal PageRank." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/10469/.

Full text
Abstract:
The our reality is characterized by a constant progress and, to follow that, people need to stay up to date on the events. In a world with a lot of existing news, search for the ideal ones may be difficult, because the obstacles that make it arduous will be expanded more and more over time, due to the enrichment of data. In response, a great help is given by Information Retrieval, an interdisciplinary branch of computer science that deals with the management and the retrieval of the information. An IR system is developed to search for contents, contained in a reference dataset, considered relevant with respect to the need expressed by an interrogative query. To satisfy these ambitions, we must consider that most of the developed IR systems rely solely on textual similarity to identify relevant information, defining them as such when they include one or more keywords expressed by the query. The idea studied here is that this is not always sufficient, especially when it's necessary to manage large databases, as is the web. The existing solutions may generate low quality responses not allowing, to the users, a valid navigation through them. The intuition, to overcome these limitations, has been to define a new concept of relevance, to differently rank the results. So, the light was given to Temporal PageRank, a new proposal for the Web Information Retrieval that relies on a combination of several factors to increase the quality of research on the web. Temporal PageRank incorporates the advantages of a ranking algorithm, to prefer the information reported by web pages considered important by the context itself in which they reside, and the potential of techniques belonging to the world of the Temporal Information Retrieval, exploiting the temporal aspects of data, describing their chronological contexts. In this thesis, the new proposal is discussed, comparing its results with those achieved by the best known solutions, analyzing its strengths and its weaknesses.

Abstract:
The late Victorian and Edwardian period saw ritual become increasingly important in political life. Towns and cities were involved in conscious efforts to construct and project attractive images of themselves. These images were intended to encourage a sense of civic patriotism. Ceremonies, honorific titles, public events and civic architecture were essays in the invention of tradition. However, historians have applied the concept of the invention of tradition unevenly. Previous research has dwelt on the construction of images. Perceptions of official images and responses to them have been overlooked. This thesis employs a model which recognises images as processes with foundaitons in human relationships. It evaluates images in terms of intentionality, power, context and participation. The participative dimension is of particular importance, because images aimed to instil a sense of civic patriotism which would encourage citizens to make emotional and financial investments in their communities. Liverpool attained the status of a city in 1880. The civic ideology of the city was dominated by images of commerce and by notions of Imperial duty and public service which celebrated commercial virtues. Many aspects of urban life were shaped by civic image. This study does not confine itself to public events and pageantry, instead it explores such spheres as municipal art policy, Liverpool's public health record, the attempts to extend the city boundaries, civic hagiography, the foundation of the University, women and the ideal of citizenship and the influence of football on civic identity to demonstrate the importance of images in the city's social, political and institutional history. The purpose of the thesis is three-fold: to suggest that civic image opens new perspectives on Liverpudlian history, to discover why there were more conscious attempts to construct civic image and to restore participation to the study of civic image by unravelling the connections between image and patriotism.

With massive explosion of data in recent times and people depending more and more on search engines to get all kinds of information they want, it has becoming increasingly difficult for the search engines to produce most relevant data to the users. PageRank is one algorithm that has revolutionized the way search engines work. It was developed by Google`s Larry Page and Sergey Brin. It was developed by Google to rank websites and display them in order of ranking in its search engine results. PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a weight to each document in a corpus and measures the relative importance within the corpus. The purpose of my project is to extract all the English Wikipedia data using MediaWiki API and JWPL(Java Wikipedia Library), build PageRank Algorithm and analyze its performance on the this data set. Since the data set is too big to run in a single node Hadoop cluster, the analysis is done in a high computation cluster called Beocat, provided by Kansas State University, Computing and Information Sciences Department.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the role of gender and sexuality in the US, and how people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender create and contest ideas of community and belonging through ritual and performance. I examine how race, class, and gender affect the dynamics of power and prestige within public LGBT spaces. Based on 18 months of fieldwork throughout the US, my dissertation research with drag queens, drag kings, promoters, audience members, and other stakeholders in national “gay” pageant competition systems examines the resources at stake for those involved, along with the cultural politics that inform unfolding events. The social spaces I work in are largely built by and dominated by gay men and transwomen; however, lesbians and transmen are increasingly participating. For many, this arena provides a space where individuals with non-normative gendered and sexualized identities can find not only safety and affirmation, but prestige and power. Yet, there remain deep divisions limiting the power of those assigned female at birth. I argue that this persistent inequality stems from the endurance of larger patterns of male privilege which shape US social life more generally. In the world of gay pageantry male dominance is achieved economically, structurally, and ideologically, even as many participants challenge normative gender frames.

Gapps, Stephen. "Performing the past : a cultural history of historical reenactments." Online version, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/625.

Full text
Abstract:
University of Technology, Sydney.
The reenactment of the past itself has a history. This thesis analyses self-styled 'historical reenactors' in the West and traces the history of the broader phenomenon of historical reenactment in the Australian context from the late nineteenth century to the present. The historical section focuses on several events significant in Australian cultural memory that have been reenacted over time. Historical parades, pageants and reenactments dramatically narrate culturally specific historical sensibilities and demonstrate inter and cross cultural exchanges of historical consciousness. I contend such performances have had a significant position in the formation of popular history since the late nineteenth century and that there is a continuity of conventions in performing the past. I have addressed the position of reenactments as part of a constant interest in the status and power of history in, and for, popular culture. I have shown how a form of history that operated for the public was transformed into a form of history operated by the public in a struggle for authority over the form and content of history. Historical reenactments have been useful avenues for elites to create didactic spectacular history that have also offered the opportunity for marginalised groups to make social and political gains through their participation in the making of public history. Considering the significance of reenactments in the formation of a distinctly Australian public history, they have received little attention from historians. As ephemera, reenactments sit awkwardly in the explanatory frameworks regularly used by historians. Using methodologies from a range of academic disciplines such as performance studies, anthropology and cultural studies, this thesis documents and interrogates the specific form of historical reenactment. In the sections of this thesis that analyse contemporary historical reenactments, I use my own experience as an historical reenactor of more than ten years in an ethnographic approach that reflects on the pleasures, promises and problems 'dressing up as if from the past' offers. In this history I draw continuities between past reenactments and present practices that assist in understanding historical reenactment as a specific cultural form. This thesis contends that reenactments over time have been characterised by three main elements: a collapsing of past and present, an avenue for a 'connectedness' with the past through a sensual experience, and an essential relationship with I authenticity.'

Abstract:

Ranking objects is one of the important and typical issues in our daily life. Many applications need to rank objects according to certain criteria, as simple as ranking students in a class according to average grades, or more complicated as ranking universities. Ranking objects means to arrange them in accordance with some criteria depending on the specific application. In the era of the Internet, a typical problem emerging in the last decades is the ranking of results returned by search engines. In conventional search engines (like Google, Yahoo or Bing ), the importance of a web page is the basis for ranking. This value is determined based on the analysis of graph links between web pages. With a set of documents V={v1, ..., vn}, when there is a user’s query q arriving, the search engine looks for documents in V matching the query q, then sorts the documents according to their relevance to the query in descending order. This process can be done thanks to a ranking function which allows us to compute the similarity s(q,vi) between the query q and a document vi ∈ V . Obviously, the ranking function can be seen as the core and significantly determines the quality of the search engine

Abstract:

This paper is a literature study on search engine optimization (SEO) considering the leader of the search engine market: Google. There´s an introductory background description of Google and its methods of  crawling the Internet and indexing the web pages, along with a brief review of the famous PageRank algorithm. The purpose of this paper is to describe the major important methods for improved rankings on Google´s result lists. These methods could be categorized as on-page methods tied to the website to be optimized or off-page methods that are external to the website such as link development. Furthermore the most common unethical methods are described, known as “black hat”, which is the secondary purpose of the text. The discussion that follows concerns the practical implications of SEO and personal reflections of the matter. Finally  there´s a quick view of the expanding market of handheld devices connected to the Internet and mobile search as an initial area of research.

Abstract:
In online multi-agent systems, reputation systems are needed to distinguish between trustworthy agents and potentially malicious or unreliable agents. A good reputation system should be accurate, resistant to strategic manipulations, and computationally tractable. I experimentally analyze the accuracy and manipulation-resistance of a reputation mechanism called personalized hitting time, and present efficient algorithms for its calculation. I present an alternate definition to hitting time that is amenable to Monte Carlo estimation, and show that it is linearly equivalent to the standard definition for hitting time. I present exact and approximation algorithms for computing personalized hitting time, and I show that the approximation algorithms can obtain a highly accurate estimate of hitting time on large graphs more quickly than an exact algorithm can find an exact solution. An experimental comparison of the accuracy of six reputation systems — global and personalized PageRank, global and personalized hitting time, maximum flow, and shortest path — under strategic manipulation shows that personalized hitting time is the most accurate reputation mechanism in the presence of a moderate number of strategic agents.

Abstract:
In a time when information and opinions are to a large extent shared via social media, it is important to find a way to determine how credible the content is. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether PageRank based algorithms can be used to deter- mine how credible a Twitter user is based on how much the user’s posts are retweeted by other users. Two different algorithms based on PageRank have rated the credibility of Twitter users in a network. This ranking has been compared with a manual credibil- ity check on the users to determine how close to reality the credibility distribution from the algorithms is. The results show that the algorithms can be said to preform better than random, but they still assign inaccurate credibility scores to many users. The simplicity of the algorithms is an advantage compared to other methods used in previous research. The conclusion is that the algorithms in their current states are not suitable for determin- ing the credibility of Twitter users.

Abstract:

Karvonen, S. (Senni). "On the same page:an analysis of the mommy blogging phenomenon." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2014. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201411141999.

Full text
Abstract:
The study highlighted some of the central characteristics in current mommy blogging phenomenon. I examined a blog post of Divine secrets of a domestic diva which manifested an action a group of mommy bloggers took to take part in one of the latest debates in the blogosphere. Given the controversial topic, I was interested in examining the blog entry in detail, analyzing its linguistic features and seeing what kind of discourses it created or tried to replace. I was also aiming to evaluate how the post was perceived by the readers and examine the potential community development between the bloggers and readers. The questions I addressed within this framework were the following: What discourses the blog post creates and how are they articulated? How do those discourses affect the potential for a community to emerge between a group of bloggers and readers? I employed points of inquiry developed by critical discourse analysis (Fairclough 2003, 2010). Through the analysis of language and discourse in the blog post, I aimed to characterize the social and cultural structures behind it. I identified different perspectives and representations, i.e. discourses to four themes that I named as views of maternal roles, views of (female) social behavior, views of health, and views of postpartum body image and appearance. The discourses I identified in the material represented somewhat opposing views which was more or less expected given the debated topic of the blog post. The discourses to the theme of maternal roles were used to construct social conceptions of mothers’ and women’s roles by the participants. The two main discourses under the theme of views of maternal roles I named as idealistic motherhood and realistic or non-ideal motherhood. The discourses to the theme views of (female) social behavior were reflecting types of social behavior and traits attributed to women and mothers. The two discourses I identified within this theme were female solidarity and female disunity. These two discourses were dominant throughout the post and its comments. The discourses to the theme views of health represented two rather opposing takes on health: strict and permissive. These discourses of health were present especially in the comments section. The theme of views of postpartum body image and appearance is also a central one in this text, and it included two opposite approaches which I named acceptance and critique. The discourses I categorized were not well-defined and some overlapping also occurred between them. For instance, Kang’s image and the comments which supported her view of striving for perfection articulated the discourse of idealistic motherhood and also critique of appearance discourse. Kang seemed to represent new momism with its demands of excelling in and out of domestic sphere. The bloggers represented themselves as somewhat non-conventional mothers who do not seem to care about the postpartum body image ideals of getting back in shape after pregnancy. This argument was softened by humor which probably made it more palatable with the audience. There was also a significant mixing of discourses of female solidarity and female disunity in the bloggers’ views and their action. They supported one another and reinforced their sense of community by putting emphasis on Kang’s difference from them. Still, the bloggers managed to articulate understanding towards Kang. Although the comments this blog entry received were by large of mimicking nature or otherwise supportive, the commenters were, for the most part, left out from their action and community reinforcement efforts. Some of my findings were well in tune with previous research, especially that of Yonker’s (2012). The genre in question often aims to be radical in its portrayal of motherhood but the use of rhetorical devices such as humor and confession may imply that the bloggers are only portraying something they are not and they are acknowledging that they are doing something “wrong” according to conventional expectations. I claim that by admitting that they need an excuse for their non-ideal appearance, they actually reinforce the postpartum body ideal that Kang in this particular case and the media in general convey
Tutkimukseni käsitteli nykyisen amerikkalaisen äitibloggausilmiön keskeisiä piirteitä. Tarkastelin blogin Divine secrets of a domestic diva yhtä blogikirjoitusta, jossa ryhmä äitibloggaajia otti kantaa erääseen kiistanalaiseen ilmiöön blogimaailmassa. Blogikirjoitukseen osallistuneet bloggaajat vahvistivat omaa yhteisöään korostamalla eroa kritiikin kohteena olevaan Kangiin. Vaikka blogikirjoitus sai paljon kannustavaa palautetta lukijoilta, sitä kommentoivat kirjoittajat jäivät kuitenkin bloggaajien muodostaman yhteisön ja heidän yhteisen kannanottonsa ulkopuolelle

Abstract:

Rivas, Bahti Dolores. "Aztlan in Arizona: Civic narrative and ritual pageantry in Mexican America." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/279792.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines Mexican American popular culture, including seasonal festivals, professional stage plays, journal essays, and ritual narratives in early Arizona. Through these various cultural forms, Mexican American residents negotiated and countered prevalent notions of U.S. national identity aligned with nineteenth-century ideas about Western modernity and Mexican antiquity articulated at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, in Chicago, that presented Mexican America as an 'Orient,' an internal Orient named Aztlan. Civic rhetoric in the early twentieth-century Spanish-language press created an intimate cultural landscape that casts light and shadow upon prior histories of Mexican America in Arizona. In addition to social criticism in local journals, scripted plays in print and on stage extending beyond Iberia and Mexico into the Southwest affirmed local forms of Mexican American popular culture. Staged narratives of class relations within border space defined by international economic and labor interests are also noteworthy registers of allegorical formulations of cultural identity. In addition to frontier drama and border journals, personal correspondence and candid images of rural and urban parishes also demonstrate processes by which religious farms became unfolding and inclusive demonstrations of public devotion and civic rhetoric. Popular Catholicism nurtured by an early generation of Spanish Discalced Carmelite priests in Arizona created devotional societies, public processions in religious precincts, Spanish plays in parish halls, and festival parades in commercial districts that embodied local demonstrations of Mexican American culture of Aztlan in Arizona.

Abstract : In this work we deal, in a simplified way, with the mathematical concepts involved in one of the algorithms used in Google s page ranking system called: PageRank. We discuss informally the idea of assigning an importance score for websites and then do a mathematical formalization, with the help of Linear Algebra. Finally, we present a class script to insert, intuitively, the idea of the PageRank algorithm in high school, encouraging students to learn themes such as matrices, determinants and systems of linear equations using the internet as the subject, which is becoming more present in the day-to-day lives of students and thus serving as a source of inspiration for the learning of Mathematics.
