Abstract Chronic low back pain affects 50-80% of the population, while its consequences may impair the functioning of patients suffering from it, in many spheres of life . Hope is a factor which may influence coping with pain as well as cognitive reflection of pain experience. The aim of the study has been to check: 1) whether dependencies exist between hope-trait and hope-state and the perception of pain; 2) whether experiencing pain at the time of filling questionnaires matters for the assessment of the level of hope; 3) whether there is interaction between hope, the pain experienced at the

Abstract Background Generalized expectancies have been theorized to play key roles in pain-related outcomes, but the empirical findings have been mixed. Purpose The primary aim of this meta-analysis was to quantify the relationships between two of the most researched positive generalized expectancies (i.e., hope and optimism) and pain-related outcomes (i.e., pain severity, physical functioning, and psychological dysfunction) for those experiencing clinical pain. Methods A total of 96 studies and 31,780 participants with a broad array of pain diagnoses were included in analyses, using random-ef

Introduction: Chronic joint (CJ) pain is the foremost osteoarthritis (OA) symptom that affects older African Americans’ (AAs) functional ability. Every effort should be made to reduce the development of high-impact chronic pain. One way to effectively do this is for older AAs to consistently engage in self-management utilizing the recommended OA treatments. Recommended behaviors include land-based exercise, water-based exercise, strength (muscle and endurance) training and stretching, self-management education, analgesic medications, thermal (warm/cool) modalities, and use of assistive and/or

Since landmark anthropological research on TMD in the 1990s, considerable changes have occurred in the way TMD is thought about and responded to. Knowledge about TMD among dentists and physicians has increased since publication of the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC-TMD), and a well-funded TMJ association now advocates for research and support of the condition. Several studies have shown that existential pain is not as noticed as other dimensions of pain and thus increased knowledge is needed about this form of pain. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter aims to illuminate ways in which hope was significant in the philosophy of classical Greece. Although ancient Greek philosophies contain few dedicated and systematic expositions on the nature of hope, they nevertheless include important remarks relating hope to the good life, to reason and deliberation, and to psychological phenomena such as memory, imagination, fear, motivation, and pleasure. After an introductory discussion of Hesiod and Heraclitus, the chapter focuses on Plato and Aristotle. Consideration is given both to Plato’s direct comments on hope and to the narrative contexts of his dialogues, with analysis of Plato’s positive and negative representations of hope, hope’s relationship to reason, and Plato’s more psychological approach in the Philebus, where hope finds a place among memory, recollection, pleasure, and pain. The chapter then reviews Aristotle’s discussions of confidence, hope, and courage, observing that although Aristotle does not mention hope as a virtue, he does note its importance to human agency and deliberation and as a foundation for the further development of virtue. The chapter concludes that discussions surrounding hope in ancient Greek philosophy are rich and challenging and can serve as a lively stimulus to further exploration of the concept of hope.

Abstract:
Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is a central neuropathic pain condition resulting from lesions of a prior cerebrovascular accident (CVA) mainly affecting the spinothalamocortical tract. About 5%–10% of patients with CVAs develop CPSP. The pain is thought to be secondary to a complex interaction of central disinhibition, central sensitization, and an imbalance of stimuli, although the exact mechanism remains unknown. The pain is located within and associated with sensory dysfunction in a region affected by a prior CVA lesion. The pain is often described as burning, stabbing, and sharp. Allodynia, hyperalgesia, and evoked dysesthesia appear to be major clinical findings for this condition. There are no specific diagnostic criteria for CPSP, and treatment is often difficult. Medications such as tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants are often used. Motor cortex stimulation and deep brain stimulation are active areas of research and offer hope that additional treatment modalities may be identified.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Thomas Hardy's post-Darwinian accounts of pain that hover ambiguously between and beyond subjects, that are attributed to no malign agent, and that hold no hope of prevention or remediation. Such accounts tend to be troubling in their vividness as well as in the profundity of the sorrow they describe and convey. They can certainly be called “pessimistic” in the sense that they offer no clear path for either action or catharsis; however, this chapter argues that for that very reason they invite us to consider the disposition that might be at issue in the reading practices they encourage: affectively engaged practices that ask us to experience ourselves less as potentially responsible observers of pain than as fellow sufferers.

Even before the coronavirus crisis struck, people in the Middle East and North Africa were protesting against the injustice and inequality wrought by a decade of austerity. The pandemic and the lockdown measures taken by governments have paralysed economies and threaten to tip millions of people into poverty, with women, refugees, migrant workers and those working in the informal economy among the worst affected. A huge increase in inequality is very likely. More austerity following this crisis will mean more uprisings, more inequality, and more conflict. This paper argues that if another deca
