Abstract:
This chapter examines Frederick D. Jones's murals that form a central part of the media ministry of the First Church of Deliverance (FCOD). FCOD's charismatic founder Clarence Henry Cobbs was the forerunner of Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, and other notable megachurch televangelists of the last two decades. In 1934 he became one of the first African American church leaders to broadcast his sermons on the radio and in 1953 the very first to do so on television. In 1939 he commissioned the black architect Walter T. Bailey to renovate FCOD, a converted hat factory, and hired Jones to paint a set o

In 1948, Willem de Kooning taught at the Black Mountain College summer session in Asheville, North Carolina. Elaine thrived in this experimental ambience. She worked on Buckminster Fuller’s first geodesic dome, studied with Josef Albers, and played the ingénue in The Ruse of Medusa, choreographed by Merce Cunningham, with music by Erik Satie played by John Cage. While Bill labored over his breakthrough painting Asheville, Elaine produced rhythmic abstractions on wrapping paper. That fall, he painted Woman, the first of his grotesque female figures. Abstract:
The opening decades of the twentieth century saw painters renounce mimetic representation for the formal rigors and spiritual transcendence of visual art divorced from reproduction of the visible world. That they chose to do so in no small measure resulted from a profound shift in aesthetic values: music became the paradigm for visual art. While the concept of visual music gained international currency, this seductive aesthetic model had particular resonance in the United States. Between 1910 and 1930, leaders of the American avant-garde, such as Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe,

This chapter examines contemporary black public art in Chicago, including Bernard Williams's black biblical figures in the apse of Saint Edmund's Episcopal Church. As a principal artist in the Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG), Williams has been the lead restorer for most of murals by William Walker. The Saint Edmund's committee directed the content of Williams's mural at the church in relation to the newly installed stained glass program of important black heroes. Father Richard Tolliver considered murals and stained glass an integral part of his revitalization of Saint Edmund's. Williams also

Abstract:
This prologue describes the collaboration between New York City jazz musicians and audiences—during performances and elsewhere—that is essential for creating meaningful music and building cohesive communities. It argues that jazz audiences—whether they are amateur fans, music professionals, or, more often, some combination of both—are not passive “receivers” of music, but are in fact active performers. Although our attention is typically drawn to the onstage activities, the book suggests that jazz-making is better understood when we take into consideration active participants and the various v

This book explores the wide-ranging but underexamined genre of musical portraiture. It focuses in particular on contemporary and experimental music created between 1945 and the present day, an era in which conceptions of identity have changed alongside increasing innovation in musical composition as well as in the uses of abstraction, mixed media, and other novel techniques in the field of visual portraiture. In the absence of physical likeness, an element typical of portraiture that cannot be depicted in sound, composers have experimented with methods of constructing other attributes of ident

This chapter attempts to provide an overview of Atalanta (Acts of God) (1982–87), which comprises three operas. Each opera focuses on one “apple,” or character, in Ashley's reinterpretation of the ancient Greek myth. In Ashley's idiosyncratic cosmology, the three golden apples thrown in front of Atalanta are transformed into three characters: the great jazz pianist Bud Powell; Ashley's uncle Willard Reynolds, described by Ashley as a shaman or storyteller; and the surrealist painter (and Mimi Johnson's late uncle) Max Ernst. Max, Willard, and Bud represent three aspects of opera: image, narrat
