Full text
Abstract:
AbstractAmitav Ghosh’s fictional oeuvre makes a major contribution to contemporary sea fiction, particularly that written from a non-Eurocentric perspective. His Ibis trilogy, for instance, paints a vivid picture of historical oceanic mobility in the form of ship journeys and littoral interconnections, centered on and in the Indian Ocean world. This chapter explores one aspect of that mobility, a language “spoken only on the water,” a roving dialect that Ghosh both painstakingly and playfully recreates in the first novel of the trilogy, Sea of Poppies. Laskari is a dialect that was spoken among lascar sailors born of, and borne on, the Indian Ocean. This essay examines the ways in which two dominant areas of Ghosh’s experimentation and interest—language and the sea—intersect in Sea of Poppies, through a focus on laskari as a lingua franca of work. It argues that the intersection can be approached in three ways: through the lens of Ghosh’s production of Indian Ocean space, as a language of South-South mobility; through the lens of sailor speech as a vernacular associated particularly with the craft of sail, participating in a tradition of sea fiction that harks back to Conrad and Melville; and, briefly, through the lens of postcolonial ecology, as a language that has been lost and only partially recovered.

Abstract:
Abstract Corn Creek, twelve miles south of Fillmore, ran thirteen feet wide and two feet deep during heavy runoff, though in late August when the Arkansas company arrived, much of the force was spent. Still, there was water enough to supply people and animals, both from the creek and nearby springs and sloughs. In good seasons, there was also enough moisture in the soil to nourish “immense quantities of grass”—a feature that made Corn Creek a fine resting place for cattle companies on the southern road. The Pahvant Indians, a band that mixed the cultures of the Utes and Paiutes, had occupied the Corn Creek region for centuries. The Pahvants had wide contacts with other Indians, especially those in the Paiute heartland farther south. The Pahvants had a history of simple agriculture—growing “corn, beans, pumpkins, squashes, and potatoes”—but they also relied heavily on native plants and animals for their support.

Abstract On January 1, 1889, a total eclipse of the sun darkened the sky over western North America and spread terror on earth. Alarmed Tiövusidiöikadö Paiute Indians of Mason Valley in Nevada began shooting off their guns. They hoped to scare away the force that blocked the light. They turned for guidance to their weather doctor, a twenty-eight-year-old man named Wovoka. Though ill, he tried to help. Using divination techniques perfected over generations and passed down from his father, he went into a trance or state of unconsciousness. According to many Paiutes, when a healer entered the trance state, it was as if he had died; his released soul could travel to other realms. He could find out what was wrong with a sick person and bring back a healing song. He could divine the patterns of the weather and movements of game.

Abstract In languages with evidentiality as part of grammar, marking one’s information source is a ‘must’. The concepts expressed by evidentials cover the ways in which information was obtained. They only marginally relate to truth, speaker’s responsibility, and reliability of information. To speakers of languages with obligatory evidentials, European languages appear lacking in precision, with statements being too vague, or too short. Speakers of European languages have an opposite impression, when confronted with attempts by Paiute, Yavapai, or Tariana Indians to express evidentials with lexical means: Indians’ ways of speaking sounds unpleasant, incredulous, and generally weird (see §9.2.3). What it is that makes evidentials so important for human communication, interaction, and cognition is the topic of §11.1. Speakers of languages with evidentials are highly aware of this grammatical category.

Abstract:
Abstract Over the last couple of decades, the Indian economy has experienced substantial growth rates, and India aims to be an economic superpower of the future. However, the translation of this growth into improved employment and incomes for Indians has been highly uneven across various social categories of gender, caste, and religion. While there has been considerable work on inequalities on gender and caste lines, in keeping with broader interest in the economics of religion, the study of differences in outcomes across religious groups seems to be comparatively less developed. Specifically, this chapter aims to redress that gap by understanding how religious identities affect the labour market outcomes of individuals in India today, a topic which garnered attention in the Sachar Committee Report in 2007. The data indicate that overall, India’s Hindus have better employment prospects than India’s Muslims. Although Muslim men are more likely to be employed than Hindu men, the order is the reverse for women. The resulting picture that the chapter paints is of concern to those interested in the economic well-being of Indian communities as well as those who are interested in the economics of social inclusion.

Abstract:
The arrival of Tibetan refugees along with the Dalai Lama in 1959 saw India reframe its understanding of the refugee away from that of the citizen figure of Partition to one more closely resembling the international, UN, one, even relabelling ‘returning’ diasporic Indians from Burma as repatriates where they had previously been called refugees. The Tibetans were granted partial rights by India, as part of that state’s sovereign right to grant asylum, effectively turning the decision into a matter of Indian sovereignty rather than trying to paint this as an international censure of China’s violation of human rights in the bipolar atmosphere of the Cold War. In keeping with a non-aligned stance, India’s leaders debated the place of human rights as self-determination for the Tibetan people, with a resulting impact on how humanitarian aid offered by the international community, for a group that met the UN definition even though India rejected such recognition, was handled. The relationship both with China and with Burma, in the handling of the ‘refugees’ and the ‘repatriates’ reflected the Cold War and regional tensions inherent in the Afro-Asian bloc as anti-colonial solidarities were transformed by postcolonial state-building.

Abstract:
Heat stress can affect negatively human performance, behavior and even health, therefore, mean radiant temperature (MRT) and wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) measurement and monitoring should be obtained for any environment in which people are constantly exposed. The aim of this work is to compare the globe thermometer temperature (tg), used for calculating both MTR and WBGT, using a smaller globe compared to a standardized diameter. For such purpose, a prototype has been designed. The device consists of an Arduino MEGA board, three temperature sensors, two black globes (Copper globe, matt bl
