Abstract:
The Tower of Belém, an early 16th century defense tower located at the mouth of the Tagus river, is the iconic symbol of Lisbon. It belongs to the Belém complex, classified since 1983 as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, and it is the second most visited monument in Portugal. On November 1st, 1755, there was a heavy earthquake in Lisbon followed by a tsunami, causing between 60,000 and 100,000 deaths. There is a possibility of a repetition of such a catastrophe, which could bring about the collapse of the structure. This was the reasoning behind the decision to evaluate the Tower of Belém by means of surveys using Terrestrial Laser Scanning and photogrammetry. Until now, there was no high-resolution 3D model of the interior and exterior of the tower. A complete 3D documentation of the state of the Tower was achieved with a cloud of more than 6,200 million 3D points in the ETRS89 PT-TM06 coordinate system. Additionally, measurements were made using a hyperspectral camera and a spectroradiometer to characterize the stone material used in the Tower. The result is a digital 3D representation of the Tower of Belém, and the identification of the quarries that may have been used to extract its stone. The work carried out combines geometrical and material analysis. The methods used may constitute a guide when documenting and intervening in similar heritage elements. Finally, the information contained therein will allow an eventual reconstruction of the Tower in the case of another catastrophe.

Abstract:
This short, experimental piece, represents one possible way to describe the site-specific installation ATLAS: MATRIX in the Tropical Garden of Belém in Lisbon, Portugal. The text is the narrative of a mindful collaboration, one where the act of collaborating - intentional but not overly planned - resulted in an open-ended installation/dispositive that called for ulterior collaboration, enabling the spectators to play with the elements while generating, at the same time, a reflection around the collaborative endeavour itself. An introductory story in the form of a diary is followed by DIY guidelines, indicating a replicable formula for co-laborating - [from Latin cum (together) + laborare (to practice)] - in transdisciplinary settings.

New Evidence on Early Neolithic Funerary Practices on the Iberian Peninsula's Western Façade." European Journal of Archaeology, January 25, 2022, 1–19. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/eaa.2021.64.

Abstract:
Early Neolithic funerary practices and the meaning of complete ceramic vessels found isolated are poorly researched topics in western Iberia. However, recent archaeological salvage excavations at Armazéns Sommer and Palácio Ludovice in Lisbon have revealed individual burial pits of male individuals laid in a foetal position and directly associated with necked vessels. These discoveries suggest that finds of isolated vessels, known since the beginning of the twentieth century in Portugal and usually found fortuitously apparently without archaeological context, may also have originally belonged to similar burials, unnoticed by their finders. This hypothesis opens new perspectives for the interpretation of such finds, which are inventoried in the present article.

Abstract:
AbstractThe importance of soundscape in urban public parks has galvanised researchers concerned with improving the sound environment in cities. Existing literature reveals, however, a relative paucity of studies on soundscape in particular sociocultural and environmental contexts, and on the influence of these contexts in the perception of the urban sound space.Within this framework, this paper investigates the soundscape of parks in the cities of Belém, Brazil, and Lisbon, Portugal. The influence of geography and climate as determinant of activities and behaviors, the emission of natural and man-made sounds that characterise the soundscape of urban parks, the way park users evaluate the quality of sound environments were analysed, as were other elements that contribute for such an appreciation. The methodology encompassed sound measurements inside and outside the parks, analysis of the audibility of identifiable sound sources, study of local uses and activities through soundwalks and interviews, and assessment of responses to enquiries. The results shows that the soundscape of park depends on different features such as geography, climate, urban architecture, park infrastructure, sound sources, and most importantly the visitors’ expectations for the planned activities, together with their other sensorial responses, which proved to be different in distinct sociocultural and environmental contexts.

Abstract:
Era-Arqueologia excavated in 2004 and 2009 two significant buildings in Bairro Alto quarter in Lisbon, due to urban rehabilitation projects. With approximate 17th century chronologies, they display very distinctive socioeconomic profiles: one, St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Honourable Pontifical College (commonly known as the “Little English Convent”), and was devoted to catholic teaching to the British community living in Lisbon during Early Modern Age; the other, a noble mansion belonging to Mesquitela Earls. Despite archaeological limitations of contextual data, they display some contrast between the religious context and the noble one, allowing some archaeological inference on social significance of pipe presence in Early Modern Age contexts from Lisbon.

Abstract:
The Palace of Condes de Penafiel, in Lisbon, was archaeological interventioned between 1992-1993, in which were recovered three contexts of historical archaeology, datable between the XVI century and the XVIII century, when is documented the collapse of the previous to the actual palace, during the 1755 earthquake. The authors analyse the European faience recovered from the two oldest contexts (XVI-XVII century), associated to the deactivation of a medieval drain and the primitive edification of the building (1st quarter of XVI century), which is destroyed in 1755, where were collected ceramics reused within the walls.

Abstract:
Less than twenty years after Vasco da Gama joined the commercial perimeter of the Indian Ocean (1497–8), European artists had developed a view of the newly discovered lands, ranging from highly exotic and sometimes quite fanciful renderings based on medieval sources (the ‘Tapestries of the Indies’) to careful ethnographic illustrations based on written and visual sources (Hans Burgkmair's large woodcut frieze, People of Africa and India, of 1508). These few years, in which the monstrance of Belém of 1506 (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon) was produced with the gold of Kilwa, also saw an interesting development in Portuguese gold coinage. All these ventures record a brief moment of European fascination with the east coast of Africa and its multicultural inhabitants, which is the object of this study.
