Abstract:
The inscription in Old French on a marble plaque from Tripoli of which Bohemond VI was the commissioner, remains enigmatic until the present day. The damaged state of the inscription, especially where the date of the text is given and the use of the term 'communauté de Tripoli', are the main obstacles for a definite interpretation of this inscription. The marble slab, discovered in 1928 in Tripoli, in or near the port, is now in the National Museum of Beirut. A mould of the inscription arrived in Paris as a gift from the National Museum in Beirut in 1936 and is part of the collection of the Ci

Abstract This annotated English translation of an article written by Eugène Briffault one year after the 1830 July Revolution presents a unique testimony of a city in a state of post-revolutionary transition. Drawn with the pen of a realist novelist and observed with the eye of a practised reporter, ‘The Paris Night’ takes the reader on a journey through the streets of a city seemingly under martial law, from the haunts of journalists, into the vice-dens of the Palais-Royal, past the hectic activity of Les Halles and into streets still bearing the scars of the recent Revolution. Reflecting upon the current situation of world cinema, one can hardly get away from the gloomy news and dark predictions hailing from all directions: decline of national productions and cinema culture in general, Hollywood domination, style homogenisation - in other words, the end of cinema, the Millennium... Occasionally, however, good news comes our way, too. This time from France - where the legendary Cinémathèque, founded in 1936 by Henri Langlois and currently housed in the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, will soon be moving to new premises in the 12th arrondissement (the former American Cen
