Abstract:
The Archives des Musées Nationaux in the Palais du Louvre comprise the archives of the Louvre itself, and of the Direction des Musées de France including the Réunion des Musées Nationaux. The archives of the Louvre include both ‘les registres de copistes’, a record of artists who sought entry to the Louvre, to visit and to make copies, during 1821-1850, and ‘les registres des salons’, covering the years 1824-1853 when the salons were still held in the Louvre. Together these comprise an invaluable source of information on artists in the first half of the 19th century, including as they do details of particular works, and artists’ addresses. A detailed analysis of this documentation was scheduled to begin at the start of 1990.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This short study considers the artist Hubert Robert’s Imaginary View of the Grande Galerie in the Louvre in Ruins and Design for the Grande Galerie in the Louvre, a pair of pendants that were exhibited at the 1796 Salon du Louvre and are now part of the national museum’s permanent collection. Robert’s thought-provoking display explored the formation of the national collection at the Louvre as part of the broad spectrum of revolutionary iconoclasm. This article examines Robert’s contribution to emerging debates about patrimoine and his professional role working as keeper for the Louvre in relation to the production and exhibition of the views representing the museum. It proposes that while various interpretations were plausible, Robert presented his views of the Louvre’s transformation from a royal palace into a republican museum as a process characterized by creation and destruction.

Deutsch, Kristina. Paris, EPHE, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010EPHE4040.

Full text
Abstract:
Until now, the main interest of historians towards the work of the etcher of architecture Jean Marot (about 1619-1679), who represented many buildings of the Grand Siècle (the “great century”, as one calls the 17th century in France), was based on their value as sources for the history of the building in question. Our thesis parts from another point of view and asks about the method, the evolution, the form, the objectives and the reception of these images as part of the tradition of the representation of real architecture which becomes important during the Renaissance in Italy and reaches a climax with the Cabinet du Roi of Louis XIV. One of Jean Marot’s major works is the anthologie called the “Grand Marot” (small folio, probably 1686), which renews with the tradition of collections of prints showing the most important buildings of the kingdom, founded by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, author of the Plus excellents bâtiments de France (Paris, 1576/1579). As the latter, Marot consecrated a group of prints (etched with some engraved details) to the Louvre and the Tuileries in Paris, two initially separated palaces related according to the « grand dessein des rois », initiated by Henri IV as a major symbol of power of the king. The Louvre-etchings are appropriate for the examination of a concrete example and at the same time offer the possibility to learn more about of the evolution of the “Grand Marot”. Interpreting the drawings of architects, Marot often disposes only of a fragmentary documentation, which he combines and completes, always attempting to present his own inventions concerning architecture and decoration. Related to various objectives of self-promotion, dedication and representation of power, the work of Jean Marot gives evidence of a crucial moment, when the state undertook a growing control and organization of artistic production

Abstract:
The royal library, known as the "librairie du Louvre", was the royal book collection, assembled in small rooms on three levels of a Louvre tower. About 900 manuscripts were in the library, which made it the biggest non-clerical library in the West. At the centre of my research, I study the following question: How and when was the collection of books and knowledge in the Louvre Library used by the French kings for cultural or political operations? 1demonstrate in a historical perspective how, in addition to a bibliophile aspect, the library made a political contribution to the development of the "religion royale" and the legitimation of royalty. This dissertation challenges several theoretical and methodological approaches to capture the different dimensions of the Louvre Library. I try to contextualise the subject in different fields of research in order to infer some general information on the use of books. 1focus on the virtually existing medieval library in order to contextualise and historicise the function it had at the French court. Following a historical anthropological approach, I concentrate on the use of the book collection and the use of texts. In this project 1show that the Louvre Library, the use of the texts by the kings and the circulation of the books served to accumulate arguments in favour of the king's politics, strengthen the legitimisation of the dynasty and disseminate this content. The functional character of the Louvre Library fits into a larger politics of circulations, commands and acquisitions. These cultural and courtly processes strengthened the monarchic ideology and contributed to the construction of the image of a wise king

For long, the missions and objectives of museums in Taiwan are the preservation and research of culture, while insufficient emphasis has been placed on business operations. And customer satisfaction concerning service quality was largely being ignored. However as the raising of economic growth, it is now mandatory for museums to have a clearly written mission statement. Therefore since 1990 museums in Taiwan, co-organizing with public media groups, started to host numerous special exhibitions of diverse nature, stipulating considerable business opportunities. However, increased amount of patrons resulted in decreased service quality, and over-commercialization also breeds negative impacts on neutral and academic images. Thus how to stay trendy while keeping the mission of showcasing culture and establish unique individuality has been important issues. This study uses the exhibition “Western Myths and Legends ─ Louvre Treasures" co-organized by Want Want China Times Group and National Palace Museum as research subject, while employing the service quality conceptual models as bases for analyzing the factor dimension that affects the quality of the exhibition. The relationship of the characteristics and the behaviors of the patrons are also analyzed. The feedback result showed that, among Human Factors, only Level of Education is related with Empathy and Assurance service quality factors. Among Behavior Factors, increase in Stay Time and providing Guide Service effectively raises positive recognition of service quality. It has been proven that the exhibition service quality shows positive correlation with the service quality conceptual model proposed by Parasuraman, Zeithmal, & Berry: Reliability, Responsiveness, Tangibles, Assurance, and Empathy. Cross analysis showed that among the feedback, Staff Friendliness ranked in the top level of satisfaction, while Open Space for Resting and Guideline Narration ranked the lowest. Finally basing these results, this study also files advises for the host, the museum, and the government, respectively. Keywords: Museum、Exhibition、Quality of Service

The main goal of this dissertation is to reflect about places of memory, a concept developed by Pierre Nora, and about the rehabilitation practices that frequently take place in these kind of places often marked by a very strong sense of symbolism, culturalism and history. As a study object I choose the Valflores Palace (16th century), a place that is still very present in the community of Santa Iria da Azóia, but that presents itself in state of ruin. It’s about this construction that we propose a rehabilitation intervention that aims to revitalize the ancient Palace, their outskirts, as well as the surrounding park that formerly characterized the renaissance villa in which the Palace was implanted.

This lecture presents the text of the speech about art museums in England delivered by the author at the 2007 Isaiah Berlin Lecture held at the British Academy. It comments on the role of museums as palaces or powerstations. The lecture suggests that the shape and size of museum buildings are bound to reflect not only their purpose but also the cultural assumptions of the period in which they were created, or recreated. It describes the Louvre and the Fitzwilliam Museums.
