Full textThis is an attempt to show that the use of pallets in packed road cargo operation increases the number of trips of a single vehicle and it also identifies new variables that could be sent like information to research and to decide work with pallets, depending on transportation distance. The studies are conducted based on field data, through the comparisons of operations with and without pallets. The conclusions are: there are relationships between using the pallet and the vehicle availability and marginal costs. They depend on transportation distance: the shorter the trip the better the operation conditions.

Full textVibrations generated by dynamic loads transmitted from rotor to fuselage degrade components’life and passenger comfort. A promising method not yet exploited in helicopters is introducingflexural-torsional couplings on the blade to correct unsteady aerodynamic forces. To assess this method, an isolated rotor aeroelastic model is elaborated. The elastic model combinesthe floating frame approach with the prescribed mode method. The modal basis stems fromhigh precision finite element models. The rotor’s aerodynamic behaviour is described using amulti-harmonic induced velocity model and the blade element method. The aeroelastic modelis validated first through comparison with software aeromechanics calculation (HOST) and experimentalresults from flight tests and second through a study of the influence of aerodynamicparameters on rotor dynamic loads. Finally, bending-torsion couplings are made on the blade by introducing anisotropy of the compositeblades or non-structural mass offset relative to the sections centre of torsion. An analyticalstudy of these couplings is performed, followed by a full aeroelastic modelling to evaluate theircontribution to dynamic loads transmitted by the rotor. Significant reductions are observed, demonstratingthe potential of this technique and paving the way for experimental studies

Full textThis study deals with flamenco hand clapping as both a musical language and a cultural expression. Focused on the analysis of its technology and repertoire, it also approaches its anthropological and cultural aspects, considering the role of palmas in spontaneous flamenco contexts such as corros and corrillos, revealing their psychological and social potential as a cohesive device and a stimulus of the flamenco fiesta. Likewise, the musical use of hand clapping in musical traditions of the Persian Gulf (Kuwait), the Atlas (Morocco) and the Sea Islands of Georgia (USA) is analysed, trying to offer a wider perspective of this activity as a cultural manifestation and to contribute to characterize more precisely the idiosyncratic elements of flamenco hand clapping. As far as the musicological analysis itself is concerned, the palmeo base, i.e. the monorhythmic hand clapping, is dealt with separately from the choral or polyrhythmic facet, in which flamenco reaches the highest levels of efficiency and expressiveness. Regarding the former, the musical functions of palmeo are studied, as well as the traditional and modern repertoire of bases (basic patterns), revealing the preferential use of both the silence and the offbeat as rhythmic articulators. It also analyses the different ways of tapping the foot during hand clapping and the cuentas or numerical series traditionally used to verbalize the metric cycles or compases that govern metered flamenco, throwing into sharp relief the performer’s musical perspective. In the choral facet, the most common ways of structuring the coro de palmas or hand clapping choir are analysed, according to the hierarchy and the more-or-less rigid or flexible relationship established between the voices within the choir, in a very particular hocketing technique. Likewise, the technical resources of the contra, i.e., of the palmero or hand clapper that complements the base, are analysed, either the offbeating or more complex figures such as the doble contra or the redoble. Finally, the renewal of the traditional repertoire is also approached, particularly on the part of bailaores, who have turned the taconeo (heeling) into another percussive device within the clapping choir. From the particular perspective offered by an unpitched and exclusively rhythmic instrument, organological aspects such as timbre and texture are also analysed, highlighting the instrumental quality of the palma in its two modalities, sorda (deaf) and abierta (open), or the contrast between the hetero-rhythmic texture of the traditional hand clapping, more open and spontaneous, and the homorhythmic texture of the modern one, more systematic or monotonous. Likewise, the matiz or musical nuance, either rhythmic, dynamic, agogic or related to timbre and texture, is analysed, a device with which the particular sensitivity of the palmero comes into play. At this point, a balance is also made regarding the impact of the digitalization of recording systems, particularly the use of the metronome or claqueta. This musicological analysis is based on the extensive flamenco phonographic legacy, so that numerous ancient and modern sound examples are included as evidence. Likewise, the analysis is based on the results obtained from two studio recording sessions that have allowed the contemporary praxis to be reflected and contrasted with the traditional technique and repertoire. As a whole, this empirical or documentary base has also served as a way of validating the classification of the repertoire into four rhythmic genres or hand-clapping genres: Soleá/Alegría, Bulería, Tango/Rumba and Sevillana/Fandango de Huelva, with which the totality of rhythmic-harmonic genres of guitar playing and of melodic genres or styles of cante can be accompanied. Finally, this dissertation also incorporates numerous testimonials from professional palmeros, obtained through interviews, which provide a direct point of view of flamenco performers, taking them out of their traditional anonymity.

Full textThe history of the Luxembourg Palace, the first Royal Palace ever built in Paris following a unitary design, had not been the object of a complete monograph since 1904-1910-11. Unpublished or not completely exploited archival sources bring a better understanding of its project and of its economical planning between 1611 and 1615, as well as further knowledge on the building construction - left incomplete in 1631 after the Queen's definitive exile - under its different directors, Salomon de Brosse, Jacques Lemercier and , for the garden, Tommaso Francini. For the first time the interior distribution of the Queen's apartment is also clarified, thus revealing the similarities, despite the differences of the architectural setting, with the Queen's apartment in the Louvre. Suburban Parisian residence built by a Florentine princess, the architecture of the Luxembourg is completely original one, the result of the creative mixture of French and Italian traditions. Dedicated to the couple once formed by Maria de' Medici and Henri IV -as shown by the iconography of the sculpted and painted decorations - the Palace cannot be simplistically interpreted : other that "house" referred to in 1611, the Queen has built a memorial Palace, so that nobody, within the contemporary political context, can forget the source of her authority and power

Full textFrom the late thirteenth and especially fourteenth century, grew on the walls of the Nasrid palaces of the Alhambra of Granada, a scriptural art of great variety, combining plastic virtuosity, visual qualities, poetic and political messages. Bands, epigraphic friezes and medallions underline the ornamental program of the palaces. The votive inscriptions are mingled with calligrams whose letters, backed by a fine carved network, generate architected silhouettes of plant-like interlacing Added to this poems, carved into the walls, closely linked to the power it underlines. Thus speech becomes construction and the words themselves also become imaginary buildings: therefore constituting the basis for a dynasty culturally brilliant while politically in decline.Works of three viziers poets of the end of the Nazari dynasty, Ibn al-Jayyab, Ibn al-Khatib and Ibn Zamese “sultanistic” poems qasa'id Sultaniya exalt in form of eulogies the greatness of the dynasty. They claim the religious mission of Nasrid sovereigns and celebrate through exalted images the majesty of the place representing a unique example in the Arab-Islamic ornamental art.Inseparable from the architecture they adorn, thirty poems were specially written and inscribed on the walls of the Alhambra with certain texts tracing the origin to now extinct palaces of the XIth century. They bring together, in summary form, information on the issues raised by the epigraphic corpus. However, this work does not claim to be exhaustive. It rather wants to explore and expose, in the form of an analytical assessment, the decorative program of the palace, following the thread of a historical and artistic, even psychological, contextual approach, contribute to the analysis of the links between literary and poetic facts, decorative symbolism and their pre-Islamic origins

Full textArchaelogsits use to consider traditionaly thet the minoan palaces were destroyed by sismic or volcanic action. Our researches'raw material is a study of the cretish sismicity, which shows to be principaly local, moderate and recurrent. Cretish earthquakes are frequent but low. Minoan sites are excluded from their specific locations. On the other hand, there is two different types of destruction traces described by the archaeologists, wich are successive and chronologicaly separated. First traces, from the MMII-III, are buildings'internal modifications, such as closed doors, or walls creations sharing rooms in two spaces. Seconds are combustion traces from the MRLB. Burning traces composition and their stratigraphical position in the buidings'spaces shows that, in all cases, they are human intentional actions results, materialised by fires or by substances deposits. The minoan constructions architectural study shows some specific technics use, giving a sismo-resistant behaviour to the buildings, according to modern antisismic standards. Finally, the Cretish occupations' evolution from the neolithic to the geometric periods squares with every minoan sites one. The minoan palaces' erection during mm times, their internal modifications at MMII-III and their end of use at MRIB, are inscribed in the minoan society historical evolution process, which lead to a population concentration around the knossos area and to the political power centralization in this palace, after the three others palaces abandonment

Full textRotors have been historically developed for harvesting and propulsion. For wind turbines and helicopters, decades of research have been done to optimize their design. For recent applications, such as drones, no such a research effort has been made. The high flexibility of the rotor and the different operational conditions still constitute challenging issues for their design. In this work, a coupled fluid-structure model is proposed, taking into account the flexibility of the blades in non-conventional operational conditions. The model is sufficiently simple and robust to permit extensive parameter studies. It includes a model for the wake, a model for the flexible rotor structure and the coupling. Two different wake models are considered: a classical Joukowski model, where two vortices are emitted per blade, one at the tip and one at the axis, and a generalized Joukowski model where the axial vortex is replaced by a hub vortex emitted away from the center. A stability analysis of the solutions derived with the classical Joukowski model is performed. The convective/absolute nature of the instability is analysed for various operational conditions.Stationary wake solutions are used to calculate the flow in the rotor plane. Kutta-Joukowski law and Blade Element Theory are applied to obtain the aerodynamic loads exerted on the blades. The full coupling of the rotor with its wake is first implemented for a rigid configuration. Coupled solutions are obtained for different rotors and compared to experimental and numerical data published in the literature. Finally, blade flexibility is considered using a rod model for the blade

Full textThis research is dedicated to the Palais de Paris from the 1670s to the 1790s. Located on the Ile de la Cité, the Palais is a former royal residence which houses a set of buildings and yards with a variety of functions. It comes across as both the canonical quarter of the Sainte Chapelle and as a hand-made and half-luxury commercial point. It also hosts a collection of courts, some of prime importance, starting with the Parlement and the Chambre des Comptes. Understanding how these different functions coexist, oppose or cooperate is at the centre of our research. We will analyse those various relationships in the legal enclosure corresponding to the territorial jurisdiction of the bailliage du Palais and see how this territory is taken up by its inhabitants and by all Parisians. Our approach, essentially spatial, is based on a corpus of plans, sections and elevations that allowed to carry out graphic and cartographic renditions and to assess architectural transformations throughout the eighteenth century. It also relies upon the funds of the bailliage du Palais and of the Attorney General of Parlement. We are considering the internal structure of accommodation, shops and courts (courtrooms, boardrooms, prosecutor's office, tribunal registry, refreshment bars) as well as the points of contact between the various jurisdictions (Grande Salle, Conciergerie). It is also about placing the Palais in its urban context through the analysis of its social composition and the practices specific to this territory. The public use of the Palais implies specific forms of supervision and leads to the development of a particular culture

Full textThe thesis activities are made on two different test rigs. On the first test rig, the dynamic characteristics of a hybrid aerostatic bearing are experimentally investigated in a rigid rotor configuration. The rotor is driven up to 60 krpm by an impulse turbine and is horizontally mounted on two identical aerostatic bearings fed with are pressures up to 11 bar. Dynamic loads consist either of impacts provided by a hammer or of added unbalance masses. The test rig can measure the bearing feeding pressures and flow, the rotation speed, the impact force, the displacements of the two bearings and the bearing housing accelerations. This experimental information together with the equations of motion of the rotor enables the identification of the dynamic coefficients of the bearings. A validation of these coefficients is providing by the unbalanced response of the rotor. The second part, on the second test rig, presents the results of the experimental analysis of static and dynamic characteristics of a generation 1 foil bearing. The test rig is of floating bearing type, and can reach the speed of 40 krpm. Two different casings are used for start up and for measurement of dynamic coefficients. In its first configuration, the test rig is designed to measure the start up torque. In its second configuration, a different casing is used to measure the impedances of the foil bearing. Stiffness and damping coefficients are identified from the complex impedances and enable the calculation of natural frequencies. The experimental results show that the dynamic characteristics of the tested bearing have a weak dependence on the rotation speed but vary with the excitation frequency

Full textThe study relates to the behaviours of the Genoese nobility with regard to the objects of their city palace. It bases its thoughts on the example of the furnishings of the Palazzo Spinola a Pellicceria in the 18th century, ex-domus magna of old line families : the Grimaldi, Pallavicini, Doria, Spinola. Without posing hierarchical distinctions a priori, the paintings, the sculptures, the furniture, the textiles ornaments, the crochery, the jewels are studied in a triple prospect : as patrimonial objects, as luxury objects when they take part in the sumptuary expenditure, and as objects of the decoration. The examination of the wills, the account books and the inventories, associated with the observation of works of art currently preserved in the Genoese and foreign collections, initially makes it possible to determine the logics wich govern inheritances, then the ways and the function of acquisitions and commissions and, finally, the structure and the artistic forms of the domestic interior. Expression of the decorum, namely social conventions and customs, the interiors of the Genoese aristocracy combine in the 18th century the necessary highlighting of the family inheritance with the requirements for comfort specific of the period. The essential patrimonial and social goal conferred on the Genoese settecentesca decoration, at the origin of its permanence and its conservation over several generations, corrects the idea of an evolutionary development of the artistic forms where those ancient would make place for the modern, thus inviting to go beyond a stylistic approach of art

In this study, i analysed the bronze age structures identified as public buildings, temples, palaces, citadels, residential houses, and government buildings in terms of their construction, architectural components evaluated by spatial function. The result is an architectural catalogue that forms the basis for a comparative study of buildings known from the early bronze age. Further analysis has expanded through the middle and late bronze periods. A total of 44 buildings has been analysed at 22 sites in different regions of palestine

Full textThis study is a contribution to the modelling of impact on helicopter blades. Experimental tests of impact were made with a compressed gas gun on sections of blades at different levels of energy. These tests were used to establish the damage in terms of impact velocity. Additional tests showed that the stratification and the reinforcement of the skin change the behaviour of the blade during the impact. A modelling approach is developed with the finite element code RADIOSS. It consists in controlling the degradation of the front edge that appears by a break of the resin and by the appearance of bundles of fibers. This approach is realised by modelling the resin with 3D damaged elements and the bundles of fibers by 1D elements. Delamination was modelled with a thin layer of damaged elements. To enrich the proposed modelling and to take into account all types of delamination observed experimentally, a local global approach for modelling the delamination is developed. This approach, built with the use of a specific 3D element PEC, is based on the VCCT method. It is validated through the simulation of different beam tests DCB, ELS, ENF and ADCB

Full textHelicopter aerodynamics is strongly influenced by the vortices generated from the rotor-blade tips. The design of efficient tip shapes is a challenging task because of the complexity of the aerodynamic phenomena involved and the lack of local blade-tip flow measurements. This work provides a contribution to the design of helicopter tips in hover. An efficient, relatively simple and quick numerical method is set up to study rotating blade tips in fixed-wing configurations. The accuracy of the method is shown at each step of the construction by comprehensive comparisons with reliable experimental data from the literature. First, an efficient steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes method is constructed using ONERA's elsA code. Comprehensive studies of convergence, grid dependence and sensitivity to the numerical method are performed in two and three dimensions. The very good agreement of the solution with measurements and the accuracy of the numerical method allow a physical analysis with unprecedented detail of the vortex generation and roll-up near square and rounded wing tips. The new methodology of framework adaptation is then presented. An uncoupled hybrid strategy is set up using AIRBUS HELICOPTERS' Comprehensive Analysis code HOST and the Computational Fluid Dynamics solver elsA. Global and local performance calculations are validated for all investigated test cases. Comparison with previously published adaptation methods indicates considerable improvement in the prediction of the blade aerodynamics

Full textCircular air bearings are used in high precision rotating machineries of small size working at high rotation speeds and small clearances. Many numerical studies were performed for calculating the dynamic coefficients of air bearings but experimental validations are always necessary. A test rig for air bearings working up to 60,000 rpm and different static loads was developed. The tests were performed on circular bearings but the test rig can accommodate other types of air bearings. The dynamic excitations are applied by two shakers or by an impact hammer and an appropriate method were developed for identifying the dynamic coefficients. Two circular air bearings of 30 mm and 40 mm diameter with L/D=1 and 22 µm radial clearance were tested. The experimental data obtained for different rotation speeds and static loads are compared with theoretical results

Full textHelicopter blades are complex composite stuctures that provide the lift necessary to sustain flight. Impacts on the blade in flight can lead to significant damage that can be critical for the aircraft. Due to the angle of incidence of the blades, the lower surface area is particulary vulnerable to impact loadings. This study aims to develop a reliable and predictive impact modelling dedicated to a better understanding of the damage mechanisms involved and eventually able to provide guidance for new blade concepts
