Abstract:
The purpose of the study is review and analysis of the body of work of those lectures of Lviv University who in the Soviet era taught Paleography and related disciplines. Scientific novelty: for the first time in domestic historiography, the process of teaching Paleographic courses in the Soviet era at Lviv University is analyzed, and their filling and content, information on some unpublished educational publications on special (auxiliary) historical disciplines are provided. Conclusions: the practice of teaching Paleographic courses at Lviv University has had a long tradition, and from the last third of the 19th century was of a stable nature. They were added to the educational programs because of the need for professional training of researchers of the history of the Middle Ages and early modern times and the employees of archival and museum institutions. Until 1939, most Paleographic courses were taught by Polish scholars, and the object of their close attention was Latin Paleography. Separate courses in Cyrillic Paleography, which could be attended by students of Lviv University, were given at that time by Ukrainians M. Hrushevskyi and I. Svientsitskyi. After the beginning of the Sovietization of this higher educational institution, the teaching of special (auxiliary) historical disciplines and, in particular, Paleography, was stopped for a while, and was resumed only in the second half of the 1940s. A number of Ukrainian researchers played a decisive role in that (Ye. Yatskevych, I. Starchuk, Ya. Kis), who finished secondary schools and graduated from higher educational institutions before 1939 or, under the supervision of Polish and Ukrainian professors in the first years of its Sovietization. Until the middle of the 1980s, Paleography, both Latin and Cyrillic, was taught according to the scheme traditional for previous times, in which the main attention was paid to the formation of practical skills in reading ancient writing, and the theoretical part was shortened to brief information on its history and brachygraphy. Over time, Ya. Kis enhanced the content of the course with information about other special (auxiliary) historical disciplines, first of all, Diplomatics. Due to the absence of Ukrainian Paleography textbooks, Lviv University lecturers tried to prepare a number of their own publications. However, only one of them appeared in print, and the rest remained in drafts.

Abstract:
Paleography is the study of ancient and medieval handwriting. It is essential for understanding, authenticating, and dating historical texts. Across many archives and libraries, many handwritten manuscripts are yet to be classified. Human experts can process a limited number of manuscripts; therefore, there is a need for an automatic tool for script type classification. In this study, we utilize a deep-learning methodology to classify medieval Hebrew manuscripts into 14 classes based on their script style and mode. Hebrew paleography recognizes six regional styles and three graphical modes of scripts. We experiment with several input image representations and network architectures to determine the appropriate ones and explore several approaches for script classification. We obtained the highest accuracy using hierarchical classification approach. At the first level, the regional style of the script is classified. Then, the patch is passed to the corresponding model at the second level to determine the graphical mode. In addition, we explore the use of soft labels to define a value we call squareness value that indicates the squareness/cursiveness of the script. We show how the graphical mode labels can be redefined using the squareness value. This redefinition increases the classification accuracy significantly. Finally, we show that the automatic classification is on-par with a human expert paleographer.

Abstract:
This paper constitutes an application of paleographic analysis of ancient Mayan hieroglyphic writing in line with the comprehensive approach elaborated by Lacadena (1995a, 1995b). More specifically, it reviews the evidence for the origin and development of T168/2M1a, the logogram ʔAJAW ‘lord, ruler’, and proposes a relationship between it and T130/2S2, the syllabogram wa. Additionally, the paper contributes with a more complete diachronic perspective than has been attempted before by incorporating evidence from the earliest texts. Moreover, a graphic relationship between T168/2M1a and T130/2S2 is proposed, explained on the basis of designs of T168/2M1a starting in the Late Preclassic and Early Classic, as well as the graphic operations of rotation and ‘re-rotation’, a process introduced in this paper for the first time. The paper also suggests that the relationship between these signs is not merely graphic, but also acrophonic, and it elaborates a typology and chronological seriation of T168/2M1a, with the aim of assisting scholars in assigning relative chronologies to unprovenienced texts lacking calendrical data.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This review calls into question the entire premise of this work. The paleographic as well as the historical evidence presented by Powers does not hold under scrutiny. The author fails to consider the basic rules of paleography such as haplography as the most evident explanation for the mistake he sees in the Codex Arabe 328a. The total absence of historical context of early Islam is far more troubling aspect of this work. Islam is presented as a literary midrash on Rabbinic texts and not as an independent historically unfolding tradition. The tone of the book is also regrettable; condescending and at times dismissive of serious scholarship, the tone mars the value of this work.

Abstract:
This article proposes a novel mathematical model of logical relationship among glyphs belonging to the same grapheme. Its research belongs to the computational paleography that is a field in the applied computer science. The proposed grapheme model is presented in four logical layers from bottom to up namely as Topology, Visual Identity, Phonetic, and Semantic Layer. In the Topology Layer, a unique glyph is defined by a set of topological properties. When trying to describe the logical relation of various glyphs, their topological properties must be examined in a higher layer framework so called Visual Identity Layer. In that layer, the glyphs of a single grapheme share some topological attributes in common. These common topological attributes form a main identity of a grapheme, which is called Common Identity template that is obtained by means of Supervised Learning method. The Phonetic Layer gives the sound values associated to the grapheme, and the Semantic Layer describes the usage of the grapheme in texts. Some potential implementations of the grapheme model are also presented.

Abstract:
This article presents a single fragmentary folio that was recently uncovered in excavations at the Monastery of St Antony (Egypt). This folio was discovered in a secondary deposit below the foundations of a church which was in all likelihood constructed in the 1230s. A radiocarbon dating of the folio has returned a date of 1160–1265. Together, these two data make this fragmentary folio the earliest securely datable specimen of an Ethiopic manuscript. This find, thus, provides a new foundation for the analysis of the paleography of the earliest Ethiopic manuscripts, including the gospel manuscripts from Ǝnda Abba Gärima, which contain paleographic features that seem to predate this fragmentary folio. In addition, this find has implications for the regnant periodization of Ethiopic literature and more specifically the history of Ethiopic monastic literature, especially the Zena Abäw. Finally, this folio is among the earliest surviving Aethiopica for the entirety of Egypt and thus provides new information on the relationship between Ethiopic and Coptic Christianity.

Abstract Over the last nine years, a forty-seven-person digital humanities project has explored the feasibility of computer assisted paleography for Syriac. That is, could one use big data, visual analytics, and recent advances in the digital analysis of handwriting to better understand Syriac manuscripts and Syriac manuscript culture? Last June we launched the public-facing part of our project titled the “Digital Analysis of Syriac Handwriting” or DASH (dash.Stanford.edu). DASH consists of digital page images from 90% of the world’s surviving Syriac manuscripts securely dated to before the twelfth century, as well as 90,000 individually trimmed letters from these manuscripts. In addition to introducing this tool to scholars of Syriac, this article presents a series of novel visualization tools that can also serve as a starting point for digital paleography projects in other linguistic traditions.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study: Conduct a paleographic and cultural analysis of Hryhorii Skovoroda’s manuscripts. To find and describe the most characteristic letters and calligraphic methods inherent in the philosopher, and to emphasize the features of the eighteenth-century handwriting in general. To form a paleographic database of letters that can be used to create fonts and designs for modern projects that emphasize the aesthetics of the Ukrainian Baroque. Research methods. Systematization of scientific sources, artistic analysis, synthesis and generalization of the obtained results, method of comparative analysis, creation of a paleographic database and systematization of empirical material based on it. Scientific novelty. For the first time in Ukrainian science, the manuscripts and handwriting of Hryhorii Skovoroda were examined from the point of view of paleographic and calligraphic analysis in the context of multicultural influences of the European and Greek writing traditions. Characteristic features of Hryhorii Skovoroda’s handwriting have been identified, which can be used to determine the attribution of certain texts to the philosopher. Based on this research, practising calligraphers and type designers can create inscriptions and fonts in the style of the Ukrainian philosopher. Conclusions. The individuality of the philosopher’s handwriting reflected not only the philosophical view of the author, his character and aesthetic preferences, but also the multicultural spirit of the late Ukrainian Baroque era. The study of Skovoroda’s calligraphy made it possible to fill the gap in the little-studied field of paleography related to eighteenth-century writing and aesthetics and to give impetus to the representation of these results in contemporary design and typeface projects. However, it is not enough to explore the visual connections between Skovoroda’s handwriting and artistic preferences, it is important to continue the started line of style and use this aesthetic of letters in the modern context of searching of the Ukrainian identity.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the possibilities of using information systems and databases in auxiliary historical disciplines teaching. Particular attention is paid to paleography and genealogy internet resources which were created by Russian archives and libraries. The most important method of research applied in this study is the historical and comparative method, which identifies the most successful digital resources in auxiliary history disciplines in terms of scholarly execution and pedagogical use. Digitization of monuments of Russian writing of the XI-XVIII centuries generated a number of resources prepared by the National Library of Russia. The project “Russian autographs. Russian writing monuments in the collections of the Russian National Library Manuscripts Department” is of great importance for students on paleography as a source of additional information. Electronic copies of some monuments with their scientific description, transcription and translation can be used in practical classes, independent study and students' knowledge and skills testing. Russian archives create databases which permit the search for files related to genealogical issues and provide access to electronic images of historical sources. Such resources allow to form the skills of information search in databases and research family history. However, there are currently no internet resources with fully developed methodological tools.

Abstract:
The Franks Casket, a small whalebone box from about 700 AD, contains 59 Old English words inscribed in runes. Systematic differences between its panels have never called into question the standard procedure of explaining one panel basing on the others. The present paper aims at a re-examination of the validity of this approach. The panels show a large enough differentiation of spelling and paleographical features to exclude the possibility of a single author for the whole Casket.

Abstract:
Every era of paleographical studies has its own ideological problems. Prejudices of this nature already appear in Xu Shen's Shuowen jiezi during the Han period. The present paper is intended to examine, principally through various hypotheses proposed for the graphical analysis of the character di 帝 'Lord on High', some of the negative effects of ideological interference on Chinese paleography during the past hundred years as China celebrates this year's centennial of the discovery of the oracle bone inscriptions.

Abstract:
I would like to thank Professors Fan, Li, and Wang for what has been for me a most stimulating exchange of ideas on a problem of seminal importance in the history of early China. From these three scholars, we have seen three interpretations, radically different both from each other and also from the interpretation I presented above, of a small set of oracle-bone inscriptions. I believe that these four interpretations represent virtually every possible alternative and, by having them presented together in a forum such as this, the scholarly world should now be better able to evaluate their relative merits.I believe it is clear from each of the above discussions that the differences in interpretation here owe more to anthropology than to paleography (although a correct paleographic interpretation of these inscriptions, and especially of H11:84, is an essential starting point). Would it have been possible for the leader of one kinship group to offer cult to the ancestors of a separate kinship group? I am grateful to Professor Fan Yuzhou for his citation of Sumerian evidence showing that such indeed has been possible in other historical situations. Nevertheless, as Professor Wang Yuxin has properly pointed out in critique of my own reference to Xiongnu sacrifices in honor of Han emperors, this type of evidence, being either temporally or culturally distinct from the society that produced these inscriptions, cannot be used to describe Shang or Zhou practice.
