Academic literature on the topic 'Paléolithique – France – Le Grand-Pressigny (Indre-et-Loire)'

In the wake of the discovery of numerous large blade workshops at Le Grand-Pressigny site (Indre-et-Loire, France), which initially aroused great interest, the mid-Loire Valley region became central to studies of flint diffusion. Despite the quality of the initial work, the widely shared view now is that the capacity for this concept to continue to provide useful archaeological modelling has diminished. Establishing real and actual correlations between archaeological objects and geological samples remains difficult, making it almost impossible to determine the source of certain materials represented in an archaeological series. In response to this problem, the French collective research project "Réseau de lithothèque en région Centre-Val de Loire" assembled about 30 amateur and professional researchers from various European institutions to work on three strategic missions: Mission 1: establish a list of current lithotheques (“rock-libraries” or comparative collections), verify their contents and complete them if necessary; Mission 2: link the major types of depositional environments with the properties acquired by flint through its life; Mission 3: spread knowledge and information both within the project and to all interested persons. The project is closely associated with similar French programs already in place in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Aquitaine regions. The ultimate objective is to build a national and international community around a common project, bringing participants together regularly to share knowledge and technical expertise.

La région du Grand-Pressigny (Indre-et-Loire, France), notamment connue pour son silex brun d'excellente qualité, est en fait riche d'une grande diversité de ressources lithiques. Certains de ces matériaux, particulièrement typés et dont les gîtes sont bien localisés dans le paysage, ont été exploités et diffusés durant tout le Paléolithique par les populations de chasseurs-collecteurs nomades qui ont fréquenté ce secteur du sud-ouest du Bassin parisien.
L'étude du déplacement de ces matériaux, sous des formes très diverses (blocs, éclats, lames, outils...), a permis d'appréhender la variabilité des territoires d'exploitation paléolithiques, les modalités d'occupation de ces territoires et, plus largement, de démontrer des contacts entre des régions éloignées de plus de 250 kilomètres.

Au chalcolithique moyen européen (néolithique final français), dans la région pressignienne (Indre-et-Loire), des tailleurs ont débité, à partir de nucleus "livres de beurre", de grandes lames de silex (22 à environ 40 cm), ensuite diffusées dans des régions éloignées. L'objet de cette thèse a été d'étudier les relations entre habitats et ateliers de taille. La principale question abordée a concerné le lieu d'habitat des artisans-tailleurs de "livres de beurre". L'étude a porté sur 3 sites récemment fouillés : 2 habitats et 1 amas de taille (environ 50 m2). Sur ce dernier, l'activité dominante a été l'épannelage et le débitage de "livres de beurre". Des tailleurs plus maladroits ont repris ces nucleus, probablement en l'absence des spécialistes. Dans les habitats, les niveaux de savoir-faire des tailleurs étaient nettement inférieurs à celui des artisans. Ces derniers en étaient donc probablement absents. Une étude récente du DEPOT de lames de la creusette (barrou) a montré qu'il ne s'agissait pas d'une réserve à utiliser peu à peu mais d'un stock qu'un artisan devait reprendre ultérieurement (pelegrin 1997). Les ateliers de "livres de beurre" du Vercors témoignent du déplacement d'artisans-tailleurs s'étant adaptés au matériau local. Au vu des éléments archéologiques disponibles, il semble probable que les artisans-tailleurs n'habitaient pas en permanence dans la région pressignienne mais venaient y débiter périodiquement des lames qu'ils distribuaient ensuite à d'autres groupes humains en suivant probablement des courants d'échanges. Après avoir également considéré les objets en silex pressignien diffusés dans différentes régions, 4 systèmes d'échange ont été envisagés. Les artisans pourraient avoir vu leur statut s'élever proportionnellement à leur éloignement des gites pressigniens. Il sera indispensable de vérifier si les artisans étaient ou non allochtones en poursuivant les fouilles
During the european middle chalcolithic (french late neolithic), in the pressignian region (indre-et-loire), knappers produced, from cores "livres de beurre", long flint blades (22 to about 40 cm) afterwards diffused to remote countries. The aim of this thesis is the study of relations between settlements and knapping works. The main question has concerned the place of the settlement of the "livres de beurre's" knappers-craftsmen. The study is based on 3 sites recently excaved : 2 settlements and 1 knapping heap (about 50 m2). On this, the prevailing activity has been preliminary flaking and "debitage" of the "livres de beurre". More unskilful knappers had knapped these cores another time, probably in the absence of craftsmen. In the settlements, levels of know-how of knappers were clearly inferior to that of craftsmen. These were then probably absent of settlements. A recently study of the deposit of flint blades of la creusette (barrou) has showed that it wasn't a reserve for employing gradually but it was a stock that a craftsman had to take after. The knapping works of vercors attests the displacement of knappers-craftsmen who adapted themself to the local raw material. Regarding the available archeological data, it probably seems that craftsmen didn't live permanently in the pressignian country but they came for time to time for knapping blades that they distributed later to other human groups, probably following exchange waves. After regarding the pressignian objects spread in other countries, 4 exchange systems have been proposed. The craftsmen's statut would increase according to the distance which separated them to the pressignian deposit. It will be indispensable to verify if craftsmen lived or not in the pressignian region during the future excavations in the pressignian country
